NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS) ZONE D (SOUTH WEST)

07 - 08 - 2020

The arrest, brutalization and continuous detention of peaceful protesters is condemnable; We demand immediate release of Olawale Bakare, Abiodun Sanusi and others held at the Osun SSS facility.

We find it disturbing that despite the fact that several international protocols guarantees human rights to protest, successive governments in Nigeria have not done enough in the aspect of respect for these rights.

In Nigeria, dissent is criminalised. The ruling class aim to assume the position of the all-mighty; they do not want to be questioned. Meanwhile, in an unjust society, silence is a crime, rebellion to tyrants and tyrannical tendencies is obedience to God. It cannot be gainsaid that the rot in this country has gone beyond silence, it is expected of us all as patriotic persons to be rebellious considering the rate at which our leaders direct our affairs as a people.

As a students' body, we make bold to assert that the manner in which the affairs of the country is being managed by those we reposed with the trust of making things right for us as a people is most heart-wrenching. The establishment has mobilised everything within their capacity to ensure that the people are gagged and they are neither repentant nor pretentious about it.

Once again, the government has proven their hatred for dissent with the manner in which massive violence was meted on harmless protesters in Abuja, Lagos, Ogun and Osun two days ago. The association haven studied the demands of the protesters make bold to assert that they are legitimate, many of which we have also in our capacity as an association raised in series of interventions since we came on board last year. Nigerians, especially in the North are being killed like games by rising insurgency. Rate of poverty, hopelessness and unemployment is alarming. Education and health have been completely abandoned. Corruption has taken over the entire administration, with rising foreign debt profile capable of compromising the Nation's sovereignty. Respect for democratic ideals of freedom, human dignity, rights and rule of law has been thrown to the winds. The country has been subjected to the whims of jackboot absolutism. These are legitimate issues raised by the RevolutionNow protesters. But, the posture of the Nigerian government towards issues has shown that they would rather empower/embrace sycophancy than agree with those with dissent because they are not ready to be held accountable which is why there is always a clampdown on protests. But, there must never be a time when we would fail to protest in calling for improved living standard which is evidently lacking.

As concerned students' body being aware of the direct and dastard impacts of increment in pump price on Nigerian students as it is also for the Nigerian populace at large, we are pushed to condemn the decision of the Federal Government and equally join the public in the campaign for rejection of the new pump price. Apparently, the Nigerian government has succeeded in failing the citizens including the mass of Nigerian students, this is especially more obvious since the inception of the Covid-19 pandemic where many Nigerians have been rendered economically powerless due to the lockdown imposed by the same government, but failed in providing relief packages for the people. It is on record that NANS as a body has been clamouring for necessary slash in fees by at least fifty percent for Nigerian students as a means to ease the hardship on students and parents during-and-post-the-pandemic-period.

It cannot be denied that the Nigerian government has since turned deaf ears to both the Nigerian students and the general public on the quests for relief packages. This failure of Nigerian government in guaranteeing the welfare of the people despite huge donations received from local and international bodies meant to ease the conditions of marginalized Nigerians, not to mention the hundreds of million dollars recovered Abacha loots from the United States government is most callous and irresponsible.

It is on this note that NANS cannot but describe the character of the Nigerian ruling elite as inhumane and greedy. We therefore call for immediate reversal of the hiked pump price and aggressive implementation of relief package provisions for the Nigerian people, including our stand on 50% slash in tuition fees and upgrade of facilities at various tertiary institutions, free and qualitative public health care and provision of portable jobs for the people.

It is to these end, that we demand that the government unconditionally frees the detained protesters.

We warn that the leadership of the Zone would be forced to mobilize students down to the barricades should the government fail to release the protesters at the latest Monday.

UPDATE ON THE DETENTION OF OSOGBO 7: DUNNEX AND TWO OTHERS NOW RELEASED FOLLOWING PUBLIC AND INTERNATIONAL OUTCRY
6/08/20

You will recall that the Movement for a Socialist Alternative (MSA) issued a call yesterday for solidarity action towards the release of Dunnex Samuel, a member of the MSA and student leader at OAU, who was arrested along with Mandate, Gift and four others, and detained by the Osogbo's section of the Department of State Services (DSS). They were arrested for converging for a #RevolutionNow protest in Osogbo, in about the same manner other protesters were arrested, dehumanised and looted by military men across the country. The seven and other protesters were opposing the rate of killings, insecurity, illegal arrests and detention, and poverty, which have taken to astronomic proportions under the Buhari's regime.

The seven protesters spent the night in the DSS custody, in cells notoriously acclaimed to be hell-holes, for exercising their democratic and lawful right.

Dunnex and two other detainees have now been released. This was following legal intervention from human rights lawyers and the upwelling of public anger against their continuous detention. Remarkably, #FreeDunnex trended on twitter and other social media platforms throughout yesterday; this shows the furious reaction the DSS action generated among average Nigerians. Socialist politicians like Mick Barry, of the Irish Parliament, and other socialists from Germany and the US also demonstrated a true spirit of international solidarity with the oppressed people of the world by making bold statements for the immediate release of the protesters. In particular, an Osogbo-based socialist-lawyer, Alfred Adegoke, played a commendable role in representing the detainees and securing the release of the three, which is worth mentioning.

However, the agitation for the release of the detainees is not over until the four activists remaining in unlawful detention are released from the Osogbo DSS hell-holes. We call on Nigerians and the international friends of human emancipation to now raise more loudly the agitation for their immediate release rather than relenting on account of this small victory.

The illusion of strength displayed by the Nigerian government yesterday, we hold, was possible because the vanguard of the oppressed people, the organised working class, has not yet merged its strength with the anger and passion of Nigerian youths and other oppressed people. We call on the labour movement to take its rightful position at the head of the emerging class struggle in Nigeria. The time is now appropriate for the merging of forces to bring to a halt the oppression and grand exploitation that Nigerians face in their workplaces, and the killings and banditry and corruption they suffer.

We place a call on the labour movement to call a day general strike against the oppression that Buhari’s regime is inflicting on the working people and poor. Now that the cross-sections of capitalist-ruling class in Nigeria have proven itself incapable of addressing fundamental economic and social issues, because of the man-eat-man nature of every capitalist society, it is important the working and poor people build a united and enduring struggle to displace capitalism, then construct a society that can seize social wealth to reposition our education, health, and industrial sectors.

Once again, we call on Nigerian workers, students, and oppressed people to join their voices with others demanding the release of the remaining four activists incarcerated in DSS cells. We also challenge the Nigerian left, socialists, and the labour movement to discuss the next stage of the struggle to reconstruct the country along lines that can abolish the artificial poverty about the country.

Signed,

Dagga Tolar
Spokesperson, MSA

Crime / Nigerians 20 Times More Likely To Be Killed By Police Officers Than Terrorists by TakingItBack: 12:19pm On Jul 19, 2020
Morning Distinguish members, This dreadful elements are simply working towards their own disbandment. We will not live in a country where Police is feared under a Democracy. It is either they are reformed or ostracized from society. It won’t take us a month to achieve this. But let’s see if they get the message.

*Nigerians 20 Times More Likely To Be Killed By Police Officers Than Terrorists, Groups Say;*

About 24 civil society organisations and coalitions across Nigeria have hailed the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Adamu Mohammed, for disbanding of satellite offices and bases of the Intelligence Response Squad and Special Tactical Squad of the Nigeria Police.

Adamu had last week ordered the disbanding of the formations as part of moves by the Force Headquarters to reposition the security organisation for greater accountability.

The groups in a joint statement said the excesses of the disbanded formations were so menacing that senior police officers, including DPOs, Area Commanders and Commissioners of Police could not control them.

They said Nigerians were 20 times more likely to be killed by police officers than by a terrorist.

The statement reads, “We commend and welcome the decision of IGP Adamu Mohammed to disband the satellite offices and bases of the IRT and STS; and we believe his decision was in response to the numerous complaints and public outcry concerning the notoriety of the operatives of these units who regularly engage in human rights violations, brutality, violence, corruption and abuse. The operatives took advantage of the attachment of ‘Inspector general of Police’ to their names to commit crimes and abuses in the name of the IGP; they conducted themselves in the most appallingly unprofessional ways, placed themselves above the law and were unaccountable in their operations.

“Their excesses were so menacing that even senior police officers, including DPOs, Area Commanders and Commissioners of Police could not control them. They became so unbearably lawless that senior officers in states complained.

“We are not unmindful of the operational exploits of the IRT in particular, under commander DCP Abba Kyari, in arresting some high-profile kidnap suspects and successfully setting free some kidnap victims. However, many of the operatives recklessly engaged in excesses and atrocities - ranging from abductions, detention, torture and extortion of huge sums of money from targeted victims and illegally confiscated and converted money and properties recovered or belonging to many of the persons they arrested for their personal use.

“Some of our organisations intervened in some cases and our findings were that many of the victims were innocent of the crimes for which they were abducted, maltreated and extorted of huge sums of money. In fact, the operatives exploited and turned their call to combat crime into an opportunity to commit crime by harassing, intimidating, maltreating and extorting huge funds from victims most of whom were framed with false accusations.

“We call on the IGP to further ensure that numerous allegations and complaints against particular operatives contained in several pending petitions by several organisations and individuals and in reports by notable organizations such as Amnesty International, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, among others are investigated and officers responsible for abuse, corruption and misconduct brought to account.”

The group said despite losing 82 Nigerians and several others to extra-judicial killings, abductions, indiscriminate harassment and arrests amidst other unprofessional conducts of police officers, not a single officer attached to SARS, SACS, SAKS, STS, ZIS, IRT and other units had been brought to book.

“We call on the IGP to, in addition to the disbandment of the satellite offices of the IRT and STS, order investigations into the various cases and allegation of unlawful detention, extortion, torture and other egregious abuses committed by any of the personnel of the units across the states

“We call for a review of all cases handled by the IRT and STS and an audit of all the funds and properties confiscated by them either as exhibits or illegally confiscated properties and determine to what extent some or all of these were converted to personal use by the operatives. They must be retrieved and returned to their owners,” the statement added. *Credit: Sahara Reporter*

Crime / Rape by TakingItBack: 9:38pm On Jul 18, 2020
Rape has so many negative consequences on the survivor. So does false rape accusations to the accused.

As much as we stand against rape and we stand with the survivors of rape,
Our recent experiences with false accusation

*Case one:* The girl decided to play a prank on her lover who she noticed has started giving her less attention because of another lady. Her intentions were to scare him a little but she took it a notch higher by recording the false allegations and sending it to a friend of his. He did not take the matter lightly, he sought legal help immediately and the girl retracted her statement.

*Case Two:* The woman had accused her estranged lover of defiling her 9 years old daughter for three years. Unfortunately, the media was quick to carry it and it went viral. Well meaning Nigerians and the appropriate government agencies came to her aid, the alleged perpetrator was arrested all through the investigation. The government provided a shelter for her and all. The child was taken for a medical check and the medical report showed the girl hymen was INTACT.
Further investigations from the police showed that the woman falsely accused her lover because he wanted to end their love affair.

No to rape!
No to false rape allegations!

The man who was falsely accused had spent a month in detention while investigation was on going.

I will like us to ask ourselves some questions.

Are Nigerians born selfish and are they thieves from birth? or is it the environment that turn them?

How did this environment came to be, where can it be traced from? Who are those that planted it?

This environment, who does it favour? The citizens or the leaders?

If this environment where to be changed who is it going to favour and who are those they are going to feel sad?

Among the citizens and leaders who are likely to change this environment easily without much problem?

Now if these questions are correctly answered we will know where part of our problems are from,

When The Europeans left us,( Africa as a whole) they intentionally left us in the hands of men who were selfish and greedy,( foolish men) so that they can easily make deals that will still be favouring them and their economy in the expense of the people of Africa, that's why the men who wanted to do good in Africa were killed off, even when seemed for help they didn't render, these evil men who where left to run the country started looking public funds for theirselves and family in order for the people not to unity and fight them, they created an environment of hatred and tribalism so that the people can't be one, even in the army, they made sure before you gain favour for anything you must give something in return, they created nepotism so that before you can think about another person you must think about yourself and family first, they shifted people's eyes from desiring the good of the society but for theirs only, they knew in order to further this hatred and selfishness then religion must be targeted, cos it is only religion that could enlighten people to fight, the pastors, fathers and imams were given Hugh amount of money for prayers and support, this politicians will support one project or the other in the church or mosque and our religious leaders will tell them, may God or may Allah bless you, even to the point of telling the poor masses to pray for them for God or Allah to keep blessings them and help their endeavours ( looting) these same masses who these politicians has stolen from.

Our fathers couldn't see through all this cos they were occupied with fighting for their tribes(tribal wars) while all these came as a result of the selfishness and lust for power from the Eastern/south south leaders, the northern leaders and the south west leaders, but they made the masses fight for their own selfish reasons, our fathers never for once join hands together to fight the enemies of the masses those that tried to fight were killed or got jailed, if you were a hard nut to crack they settle you. These men has since remained in power and things has gone from bad to worst and it will keep to get worse if nothing is done. This environment that was created by the leaders in order to help them stay in power for the rest of their lives and loot Nigeria to death has now turned to a culture, it is now a way of life for a Nigerian to get a little extra money from where he is working by stealing infact in Nigeria is not seen as stealing we see it as smartness, and when someone tries to be different they see him as a fool.
Till this day I have it hard to blame Nigerian( the masses) especially people from this generation, they act the way they do because that's how they have been taught to live, this is the only way they know how to live their live ( selfish, greedy, make money by all means cos that all that matters, be scared of the government (leaders) no much interest in politics or political activities e.t.c)

It is not that they do not want good governance, or a better society the issue is that they do not believe that Nigeria can get better, because they can seen so many killed for trying to question the status quo and that's the major difference between them and us, we believe that Nigeria is redeemable and there are also people like us who are out there but can't do anything cos they haven't seen people like them, so we all should make it as an obligation to seek out this

If we don’t Join a Party with a revolutionary Movement. What are we doing? We can’t keep visiting a country which is working. And abandon our Country which is being ruled by expired elites...

The Nigeria issue really is bad. And its good that we already know that its ONLY possible to make change if and only if we do it in a group formation. Remember, there is ALWAYS POWER IN NUMBERS.

The question is HOW do we as Nigerians get this change we NEED?
We have a lot of problems which birth more problems making Nigerians find it hard to live in Nigeria.
•Political thuggery,

•Police /SARS brutality (I have been on gun point with the police for at least twice for absolutely no reason).,

•Election rigging,

•Unemployment (imagine jobless Nigerian buying Jobs especially govt jobs as high as 250,000 per slot, that's if you'll even get the job.

•Gross decay of our educational system,

•Mind blowing corruption ( like seriously, in Nigeria -snakes can swallow Billions of Naira, rats can invade a presidential villa and Billions be spent to repel the rats. and its fine for our government to dole out this crazy news knowing that dumb Nigerian will just make jokes about it and calm down, comedy is all we like right?

Worse so, youths don't have jobs in Nigeria and worst is that other countries either deny us entry or restrict Nigerians from employment in their countries. This makes us stuck in odd positions of unemployment, impoverished living, stress etc while our Rulers are killing us in and out.

The list of our wahala is endless and mostly linked to our government (both the voters and the voted for and more especially the clowns that refuse to ever vote).

So the question is still. What or How can the change be achieved?

All of us youths need to come together as one whether Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Muslim, Christian, or traditionalist we have to fight this collective

We should try as much as we can to get students and young professionals involved in this movement. It is our movement, our future, our lives, and our country at stake. We can't be as docile as our parents had been to leave it all to the demons while sitting like lame ducks who'd complain and resort to prayers of "God dey" to wish it out. We are taking action to wrest our country from the stranglehold of the vampires such that our kids born and unborn would be proud of us when they hear or read the history of our patriotism and quiet revolt.

Needless to say , the so called 20 years of democratic dispensation has not only dispensed with the lives and welfare of the Nigerian people, the so called transition is notting but a transition from military dictatorship to civilian authoritarianism. The past 20years have however revealed that the PDP & APC have no fundamental difference other than such difference that exists between an armed robber and 419. both anti-poor parties are like the biblical satan who have only come to steal from the masses , kill them with bullets of poverty , insecurity , inadequate healthcare and finally to wreck destruction on their Future.
