Lazio striker Ciro Immobile has beaten the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi to the coveted Golden Shoe for 2019-20. The Italy international has enjoyed a remarkable season in front of goal, with his best-ever return posted in league competition at 30 years of age. Veteran frontmen have set the standard in what has been an eventful campaign for all concerned. While Immobile tops the charts with 35 Serie A efforts to his name, his closest challengers are all seasoned performers who have made a career out of terrorising opposition defences. Lewandowski, with 34 Bundesliga goals at Bayern Munich, is now 31 years of age, while five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo – who sits third on the Golden Shoe list after netting 31 times for Juventus – has passed his 35th birthday. Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, who registered 25 La Liga goals, is 33, and the leading marksmen on a Premier League stage – Jamie Vardy of Leicester (23 goals) and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (22) have both passed their 30th birthday. They will all be expected to maintain their stunning standards when competitive football returns after a short break for the 2020-21 campaign. It is, however, Immobile who can revel in the fact that he currently sits at the top of the European goal charts. He also has one more opportunity to raise his tally even further, with Serie A the last of the major divisions in Europe to finish the campaign. Lazio will bring the curtain down on their season with a trip to Napoli on Saturday, with their top scorer needing just one more goal to match the Italian top-flight record haul of 36 set by Gonzalo Higuain when he was in Naples in 2015-16. Immobile is already guaranteed to finish as the most potent frontman in Serie A, as Juventus have taken the decision to rest Ronaldo for their final outing against Roma – with Maurizio Sarri keeping one eye on a Champions League clash with Lyon on August 8. The Portuguese superstar is still waiting to get his hands on a first Capocannoniere, but that wait will be extended by at least another 12 months – as will Ronaldo’s pursuit of a fifth Golden Shoe. The only other member of the top 10 that can add to their tally from this point is Romelu Lukaku of Inter – who is set to face Atalanta on Saturday – but the Belgian has only 23 goals to his name at present and would need to break all kinds of records in order to top Immobile. https://www.goal.com/en-ng/news/immobile-beats-ronaldo-lewandowski-golden-shoe-lazio-striker/ks7l7d6ez8q51xmd3zxiymxl9

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be considered to have topped Pele on a list of all-time greats, says Tostao, with a mix of two modern day superstars required in order to get near the Brazilian icon. Pele’s standing at the top of any greatest list was unchallenged for several years, with Diego Maradona the only player to get close to him. Messi and Ronaldo have, however, raised the bar of individual excellence to heights rarely seen before over the course of their remarkable careers. The Argentina and Portugal internationals have sent records tumbling, while helping themselves to enviable hauls of individual and collective honours. Many believe these exploits have lifted them above Pele, but Tostao still considers a man he won the 1970 World Cup alongside to be the finest player to have ever laced up a pair of football boots. He told FIFA.com: “I think Pele was better than all of them. For me, there's no comparison. Pele was far more complete. He had every quality that a forward could have. He didn't have one defect. “Messi's spectacular, but he doesn't head the ball like Pele did, he doesn't shoot as well with both feet, he doesn't pull off the moves that Pele did. “Cristiano Ronaldo is an exceptional player, but he doesn't have the ability that Pele had and he doesn't pull off the incredible passes that Pele did. “If you take the qualities of Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, put them together, then you'd have a player to compare to Pele!” Tostao also gave his take on whether Maradona sits alongside Pele, saying of the Argentine World Cup winner: “Maradona was spectacular, but he wasn't on Pele's level physically, he didn't score the numbers of goals Pele did.” Pele has always placed himself at the top of any chart, with the South American rightly proud of all that he achieved. He has, however, admitted in the recent past that he considers Portuguese power to sit above Argentine flair when running a rule over the current crop of superstars. Pele told Pilhado when asked to offer his input in a long-running debate: “Today the best player in the world is Cristiano Ronaldo. I think he's the best, because he's more consistent, but you can't forget about Messi, of course, but he's not a striker.” https://www.goal.com/en-ng/news/messi-ronaldo-hybrid-match-pele-brazil-icon-tostao/11ps3c98z1yz11ny4z1rwxtge

Cristiano Ronaldo lost a second consecutive final for the first time in his career when Juventus lost to Napoli in the Coppa Italia decider on Wednesday. After a goalless draw in normal time, Napoli secured the trophy in a penalty shootout, beating the Bianconeri 4-2 after Paulo Dybala and Danilo missed their efforts. While Ronaldo played the entire game – he had three shots and hit the target with one – he did not get the chance to take a spot-kick as Gennaro Gattuso's men were declared winners before the Portugal star's turn came around. After losing the Supercoppa Italiana to Lazio at the end of last year, it is the second straight final defeat for Maurizio Sarri's side. While Ronaldo has contested many domestic and continental finals with every team he has represented so far in his illustrious career, the 35-year-old had never before lost two in a row. This year's Coppa Italia is the first in 11 years to be decided by a penalty shootout, while it is the sixth time Napoli have lifted the trophy in their history - only four teams have won it more often. It is also the third time Napoli have triumphed over the Turin giants on a neutral field, adding to their 2011-12 Coppa Italia and 2014-15 Supercoppa victories. With the Coppa Italia wrapped up, Serie A will return on Saturday, with Torino taking on Parma in the first game back from the coronavirus-enforced suspension. Juve’s first game back will be against Bologna on June 22, with Napoli taking on Hellas Verona the following day. Sarri’s team are one point ahead of Lazio at the top of the table after 26 matches, while Napoli sit sixth in the table. They are already sure of a place in the Europa League group stage after Wednesday’s win, but are just nine points behind the Champions League places with 12 games left to play. Meanwhile, Lazio striker Ciro Immobile is leading the race to be the league’s top scorer with 27 goals, while Ronaldo lingers behind him in second place having scored 21 times in his 22 appearances. https://www.goal.com/en-ng/news/ronaldo-loses-consecutive-finals-for-the-first-time-in-his/1i32yjy9nc22b1qcrzdbyom0j3
