16. The death of Candace Newmaker In 2000, adopted 10-year-old Candace was taken to intensive therapy to help cope with being apart from her biological parents. During a "rebirthing" session, she was wrapped in flannels to represent a womb, and told to free herself. She screamed and vomited and couldn't escape, while the therapist said, "You want to die? Okay, then die." The session was transcribed, up to the moment where she suffocated.

15. The Papin Sisters They were French maids who went out of their way to work together whenever possible. In 1933, they beat the mother and daughter they'd been working with for seven years to death. T[b]he mother's eyes were gouged out and hidden in her scarf. [/b]When found hours later, the sisters were naked in their bed together.

14. John List List murdered his wife, three kids, and mom in 1971, told everyone the family was going out of town for a family emergency, and disappeared. Weeks later, people got suspicious and the bodies were discovered in the house, along with a note from List, saying he'd "saved their souls." He was finally caught 15-20 years later, living under a different name.

13. Robert Berdella, aka the "Butcher of Kansas City" Beredella killed six men in the late '80s in Kansas City by torturing them and then stuffing their bodies into dog food bags. It gets weirder, though: He kept detailed, written records of everything he did to them, and claimed the 1965 film The Collector, about a lonely man who kidnaps a young art student so she'll be in love with him, inspired his killings.

12. Axeman of New Orleans Starting in May 1918, a slew of murders occurred in Louisiana and Texas, many of them carried out with axes belonging to the victims. Police received a note on March 19, 1919, saying if people played jazz music loudly, their lives would be spared. That night, no one died. 11. Lisa Montgomery She constantly lied about being pregnant and having miscarriages. In 2004, she befriended actually-pregnant Bobbie Jo Stinnett, showed up at her house, strangled her with a rope, cut up her belly, and took out her baby. Bobbie Jo was only passed out, so she woke up and wrestled to get Lisa away from her, but Lisa then killed her.

10. Donald Harvey, aka The Angel of Death He worked as an orderly at Marymount Hospital in Kentucky in the '70s and '80s, and claimed he killed 87 people. He'd take patients off life support or put cyanide or arsenic in their IV drips, saying later he believed he was putting them out of their misery. He was caught when cyanide was found in one of the bodies during an autopsy.

9. Mona Fandey Fandey tried to be a Malaysian pop star, but her career didn't really take off... so she got into black magic and became a witch doctor. She was only convicted of killing a politician named Mazlan Idris in 1993, but it's possible Fandey killed at least seven. She was given the death penalty in 2001.

8. The Alphabet Killer No one knows who killed these three girls in upstate New York in the 1970s whose first and last names each started with the same letter. Their bodies were also found in towns starting with the same letters as their names: Carmen Colon in Churchville, Michelle Maenza in Macedon, and Wanda Walkowicz in Webster. Hundreds of people have been questioned, but no one has been convicted.

6. Nannie Doss, aka The Giggling Nanny Four of her five husbands died from poison she put in their food. Her first husband didn't die at her hands, but he said he left her because she scared him. Once caught, she seemed excited to spend life in prison, and often smiled and "giggled" when describing her crimes.

5. Erzsébet Báthory Also known as "The Blood Countess" in the 1600s, she developed a taste for making young girls run naked in the snow, cutting off finger tips, literally bathing in virgins' blood to stay young, and performing sexual acts with some of the corpses. Um... okay, lady.

4. Herbert Baumeister, aka The I-70 Strangler From the '80s until 1996, he'd go to gay bars to pick up men and lure them to his indoor pool to kill them. The pool area was set up very strangely, with a bunch of mannequins that looked like they were enjoying a pool party. There, he'd strangle them and dump their bodies along I-70 in Indiana.

3.The Shoe Fetish Slayer Jerry Brudos abducted, bludgeoned, and murdered four women. He claimed that women's shoes were his substitute for porn, and used the severed foot of one of his victims to model heels in his home. Severed breasts being used as paperweights were also found by police.

2. Katherine Knight The first Australian woman to be given life imprisonment without parole, Knight stabbed her husband to death, skinned him, cooked him, and placed his body parts on plates with name place cards next to them to feed to her kids.

1. Dennis Nilsen In the late '70s to early '80s, Nilsen would pick up young men at London bars, bring them back to his home, kill them, then bathe and dress their dead bodies.
