Politics / Re: Osun Poll Today, What Is Happening In Your Area? by targus: 7:29am On Aug 09, 2014
I hope the good people of Osun will be given the chance to vote for the candidate of their choice, after all they will have to bear the consequence for the next four years, but in my opinion, none of the parties will play by the rule which equate to the good people of Osun state being the loser. So Sad.

Agriculture / Re: Generating Gas Through Biodigester. by targus: 4:58pm On Jul 19, 2014
Hi Slurry, Thanks for your comments. I'm willing to cut back if I have to but the plan is to use this to power recirculatory system for my fish ponds in future and also have enough to power my farm house. Maybe with 1 or 2 Ac's for a very hot days. The animal dung shouldn't be a problem because our pig farm should be in in production then.

Agriculture / Re: Tomatoes Farmers Let Us Meet Here by targus: 4:22pm On Jul 03, 2014
@Clementcro, I tried to plant tomato twice on my farm but the output was not encouraging even though pepper did very well, as soon as its transplanted, it will just wither and die. i don't know what im doing wrong maybe the variety of the seeds i'm planting or other things i didn't think about.

Agriculture / Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by targus: 3:59pm On Jul 03, 2014
excelsiorfarm: with what u wrote, i dont think feeding will be much of a challenge, try to buy white pigs(not with spots), it has better value in terms of need, for d pregnant sows, the resultant piglets produce is dependent on d following, genetic makeup, breed, how they are fed on d farms u bought from ( when a sow is on heat & had been fed well(not overfed), the tendency to release more eggs for fertilisation is very high. When they produce, select few of d males with more weight at birth for your breeding stock, d rest u castrate for body weight, it is d female that is essential most for multiplication, there is great market in eastern Nigeria & neighboring countries, provided u can meet demand, GOD BLESS

@ExcelsiorFarm, Using the male from my farm as my breeding stock is not really ideal because that will actually cause inbreeding , my plan is to Always castrate male piglet from my farm, Fattening them up and sale them, Male we bought from reputable breeder like University of Ibadan.

Guys, Thanks for the contributions and comment, This is what the forum is for anyway, The way i went about building my Piggery pen will actually work out cheaper than most people and i believe in doing the INFRASTRUCTURE well and then the rest you can adapt as you go.

The few things bought out of the stuff used for building that Pen are Cement, Roofing Zinc and nail, the Wood is fell from my farm and sawn into plank.

The Sand and gravels are also from my farm and most of the people working except the master bricklayer are my farm boys .(currently have few working on my farm)

The construction of the farm is Model on Boyd Farm (Please google it,who has done a great Job in advising what and what to look out for, they have been a rock)

Each farrowing pen comes with its own drinking nipple and and the plumbing and drainage are well planned so that the drainage goes straight into our proposed BIODIGESTER Tank to be use for biogas.

Regarding feeding, my farm is located within 100miles of 3 major breweries. I have over 50 acres of my own Palm Plantation whereby the PKC will be use for feeding them. I have over 200 Acres of Plantain Plantation where by the stem is something they like eating as well and i have my own truck for bringing in the food thereby reducing the cost of Transportation.

Also, 5 Tonnes /Hr capacity MILL is been installed on the farm as well.

Regarding experience, Experience they say is the best teacher, thats why we are getting an experienced pig farmer to join us for the first 6 months to take us through the phase but on our own farm , at least taking us through 2 full cycle and impacting the knowledge into us.

Since we are getting pregnant farrow at different stages of pregnancy and some that are not pregnant, i think by the time we reach our Goal of having 100 Breeding Stock, things would have settled down.

In line of this, please chip in what i should be doing that i have not thought of and what i shouldn't be doing that i'm doing, all suggestion will be welcome. Thanks for your help and i hope this explain a few things.

Regards

Hi, I'm very happy for what you are doing, Its a profitable business but i feel i should let you know that planting 3200 suckers per hectare is not going to be economically viable for you, The first year will be ok but subsequent yield is going to be too small for you that it will significantly affect the weight of the affected plantain yield because they will be competing for soil nutrient and thus your market price will be affected. I'm sure you know plantain is sold by grades,

Business / Re: Palm Tree VS Plantain, Banana, Casava, Yam by targus: 11:43am On Nov 19, 2013
Hello Poster, ii'll advise you to do your calculation very well before jumping into oil palm plantation, based on the size of land you have which is just over 1 acre of land , you will only be able to plant 60-65 oil palm stands, (9metre Triangle) you can verify this by going on Nifor website. i will say fruits from 60 stands is not enough for you to setup a mill for so you'll end up selling the fruit to middle man that will take into the mill which i can assure you its not what you really want based on your forecast income of 1.5million a year. oil Palm plantation is very lucrative , agreed. but you 'll need much bigger land for the kind of profit forecast you have in mind. i can even tell you authoritatively based on my experience that you'll need about 12.5 acres of land (5hectares) which will be 6 plots of land x 6 =1 acre multiply 5 = 30 plots of land.. Regarding plantain, you'll be able to have 500 stand on an acre and remember they will not come into maturity at the same time so you will be lucky to harvest 2 dozens in a month. you best bet is fresh fruit vegetable like tomato and peppers. Good luck to you...
