Thank you for the above and would all like to confirm make & model of your computer. ie Windows Vista 530
Here's your diagnostics in narrowing down the cause. right click an empty area on your desktop
arrange icons, show desktop icons is tick. if no joy try dragging an icon to the desktop. any changes ?

Any software installed recently ? if no joy click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools, system restore

click a date before problem began and click next. if the date you wanted does not appear click on choose
system restore point older than 5days and follow on-screen instructions. Good luck
