Business / Poor Cargo Structure, Unfavourable Trade Terms Sabotaging Freight Earnings by Tayogeorge(m): 10:20am On Aug 22, 2019
Stakeholders in the maritime sector have said Nigeria’s earnings from cargo trade are threatened by poor structure of the cargo and unfavourable terms of trade, noting that one of the greatest hindrances to a thriving maritime sector was Nigeria’s lack of control over its cargo.
A former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Mr John Egesi said the problem of the Nigerian maritime sector was with the control and structure of cargo.
According to him, Nigeria generated a lot of cargo but had not reaped its benefits but the problem was an economic challenge that had to do with the country’s production base.
He said, “Nigeria must also correct the lapse in its maritime sector through the production of valuable cargo. “There is nothing wrong in trading in cargo but you may trade in cheap cargo that does not make money. What makes money is the value.”
“What makes Singapore great is the value of the cargo in Singapore. What makes China great is the value of the cargo in China. What makes Japan great is the value of the cargo that leaves their port to other ports. What cargo do we have? Until that structure is corrected, we will continue to have these meetings and conferences without much result.”
“This is an economic problem that is based on what we produce. If you produce nothing, you carry nothing. When you produce good cargo, ships will be begging to carry it.

Business / Difference Between Inbound Logistics And Outbound Logistics by Tayogeorge(m): 12:50pm On Aug 20, 2019
At the mention of the word “Logistics”, a lot of people get confused and require further explanation. For key players in international and local trade and parties involved in the supply chain process, such as suppliers and distributors, it is expedient to understand basic terms of the industry.

Whether you are in the manufacturing business or retail business, shipping and handling will be a huge part of your overall operation in this technological world where more people shop online for what they need. If you are in a situation now where you know you are going to need logistics service, you probably have one big question: what's the difference between inbound and outbound logistics? Here are a few things you should know about a few of the differences between the two.

What is logistics?

Logistics can be said to be the management of the movement of materials, information and other resources between two points, i.e. from the point of inception to the point of consumption, to conform to the requirements of the customers and the organization. Logistics management determines the procurement, storage and transportation of goods and material to their ultimate destination. Logistics is the efficient management of the storage and movement of products and information within a supply chain. In other words, it is a process used by a business in order to coordinate its supply chain operations. It includes a wide variety of tasks and activities such as managing how raw materials or inputs are acquired and transported to the business, how inventory and inputs are stored at the business’ facilities, and how inventory is transported within the business and beyond. Logistics activities can be divided into two main categories: inbound and outbound logistics. The first category is mostly related to the transport, storage, and delivery of goods coming into a business while the latter focuses on the same for goods going out of business.

Inbound Logistics

As a business owner who has a lot of inventory coming into the business on a regular basis, it is important to be more interested in learning about inbound logistics. This area of logistics focuses mainly on streamlining the process of transporting goods to the business as they are needed.

The inbound logistics process refers to the inflow of raw materials from suppliers to manufacturing plant. This is the first phase of the value chain. It involves different activities, such as the storage and delivery of raw materials and parts that are going to be used in production. It also includes sourcing the materials, tracking inventory and optimizing the movement of products from suppliers to the store, warehouse or manufacturing unit.

Outbound logistics

Outbound logistics involves the flow of finished products from a company to its end customers. These activities are mainly concerned with the distribution channels and customer service. Outbound logistics, as the name indicates, is the collection, storage, and distribution of the final goods and related information flows, from the manufacturing plant to the end user. It covers all those activities (i.e. selecting, packaging, transporting, etc.) which are involved in the outflow of merchandise from seller to the buyer.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is saddled with the responsibility of managing the border and that entails enforcing, or assist in the enforcement of, a wide range of import and export prohibitions and restrictions on behalf of a number of government agencies like the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON).

Recently, goods worth 18.3 billion naira have been seized by customs and that is why Valuehandlers is giving the list of goods that are prohibited and should not be imported into the country. These prohibitions and restrictions by the NCS have been introduced over time for reasons of security, public health, environmental protection, and for maintenance of order and morality.

If there is an absolute prohibition on a good, it means you are not allowed to import the goods into Nigeria under any circumstances. But if it is a mere restriction, importation may be allowed provided you have obtained written permission, from the relevant agency, to do so. For example, pharmaceutical products not listed in Nigeria may be imported provided a written permit is obtained from NAFDAC.

Nigeria’s list of prohibited or restricted imports is as follows:

1. Live or Dead Birds including Frozen Poultry

2. Pork, Beef

3. Birds Eggs

4. Refined Vegetable Oils and Fats [but excluding refined Linseed, Castor and Olive oils. Crude vegetable oil is however NOT banned from importation].

Business / Do I Need PAAR For Groupage Shipping by Tayogeorge(m): 12:32pm On Jul 16, 2019
“Do I need PAAR for groupage shipping?” this is a commonly asked question in the world of international trade and international shipping.

PAAR is an acronym for Pre-Arrival Assessment Report. It is a document (or Clean Report of Inspection document) which confirms conformity of the import to importer's country set criteria and or import guidelines. It provides timely, multi-dimensional risk analysis at every stage of customs processes.

PAAR is also a document that determines the rate of duty to be paid on a particular item / Group of items imported. It also shows clearly the exchange rate at the time of transaction.

Groupage on the other hand, refers to the combination of cargo from more than one shipper and or to more than one consignee for shipment together. It is usually in a single shipping container. Business / What You Need To Know When Shipping Personal Effect To Nigeria by Tayogeorge(m): 11:28am On Jul 09, 2019
[img][/img]

There are some key points or things that one needs to know when shipping personal effect to Nigeria.

Personal effects
refers to privately owned items like clothing and jewelry among others that is usually worn and movable. Personal effect shipping is the sending of personal belongings across country or internationally.

Personal effects are goods such as Shoes, Bags, Clothing, cosmetics, packages and household items.

It should be noted that there are technicalities involved in the handling of this type of shipment. This is because people / importers of these items misinterpret the word

“personal effects”. The technicality there is that most people like to refer to

personal effect as it is defined in English dictionaries, whereas Personal effects in relation to shipping and custom clearing is interpreted differently (though similar to that of dictionaries).
