According to reports in the Nigerian press, UK giant Vodafone is said to be interested in acquiring a majority stake in UAE-registered Mubadala Development Company (MDC), which in January this year paid USD400 million for a unified access service licence in Nigeria. The national concession permits MDC to offer a range of services including local, long-distance and international voice telephony services, and mobile and internet access services, and includes GSM spectrum in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands. If Vodafone does go ahead and acquire a 51% stake, it would be flying in the face of a recent shareholders agreement with the UK group’s South African partner Vodacom which allowed the latter to manage expansion in the northern half of Africa. Nigeria is the continent’s second largest market, with, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, over 32 million mobile subscribers at the end of 2006, but a penetration rate of only 22%, leaving plenty of room for growth. MDC is hoping to launch commercial GSM operations during the first quarter of 2008.

AFTER nine days of displaying wit, strength, tact and intelligence, Dominic Mudabai, a University of Lagos undergraduate yesterday emerged the winner of the 4th Edition of the Guilder Ultimate Search.

At the end of the exciting show on national television yesterday night, Dominic beat Chidozie Egbuna, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University-trained electrical engineer to pick the keys that would unlock the Golden Age, (the theme of this year's search).

He joins the Gulder Ultimate Hall of fame, which also has Ezeugo Egwuagwu, Lucan Chamblis and Hector Jobarteh, who won the first, second and third edition of the search, in that order.

At the beginning of this year's search on Monday, August 20, they were nine searchers: Nenman Gonchen, Kimberly Egbuna, Dominic Mudabai, Otokpa Williams, Buchi Mbagwu, Laura Ikechukwu, Folashade Ogunsemoyin, Lauretta Chioke and Chidozie Egbuna. Some were evicted along the line. Dominic is the winner of N5 million cash prize, a Ford Explorer Jeep and another N500, 000-wardrobe allowance at a ceremony holding today in Lagos.

The first to bow out was Lauretta, followed by Laura, whose exit was announced last weekend. Otokpa became the first man to be evicted from the search this year when he lost out last Tuesday, while Buchi and Folashade were unlucky to be evicted on Wednesday night, thus leaving Kimberly, Nenman, Dominic and Chidozie to continue the search.

The search held at the popular Shere Hills in Jos, Plateau State. The nine were selected from over 25,000 that entered for this year's Search.

Gulder Ultimate Search, sponsored by Gulder lager, was launched in 2004, with the first edition held at Snake Island, Lagos, which was won by Ezeugo.

The second edition won by Lucan was held at the Obudu Ranch Resort in Cross River State in 2005, while last year's edition was held in NIFOR in Edo State and was won by Hector.

All the other eight heroes in this year's edition will also receive cash rewards graduated according to the stages of their eviction from the Search.
