Please did you apply for the scholarship via embassy route or university route?

What program are you going for and if you applied using university route, what university did you apply to?

Thanks

I received it and have also replied the mail. My study plan was just a simple Gantts table and it was part of my proposal. Prepare a Gantts table showing your study plan and email it to me, maybe i could be of further help that way.

Thanks

Yes...learning in chinese increases your chances BUT Chinese language ain't beans oooo. Its best you go for English option. Am studying in English but still learning Chinese language for communication sake. You can apply to more than one school. As for CUCAS...i didn't use them, there are so many help links even students already on ground can help you secure admission. But it comes with a cost!
I kept trying on my own till it worked, but if you are not patient you may try using links.

Thanks for your reply. Please what school and what course are you doing?
Can you please share with me a sample of your study plan/research proposal? my mail is falolatobi96@gmail.com
Thanks

Let me answer a few questions here.
Firstly Admission processing starts January. CSC is majorly for Masters and PhD's only although a few lucky Undergraduate students are often given too. So the scholarship application and admission application goes hand-in-hand around January. You apply to the University and then You would be given a link during the application stage to apply for any scholarship including csc.

Hi, please can you give a detailed explanation about the process of applying for the scholarship. Read from the scholarship website that on the application form, we have to put a dispatching authority number, so if the dispatching authority is the university can we still apply for other universities using the same application form?

I saw online an agency called CUCAS that assist in the application, did you use this agency for your application?

Are you studying in chinese or you chose an english medium programme?

Do you know if choosing a chinese medium program will increase your chances of the scholarship?

Skipping the unknown questions to grab the easier known questions is your best bet, else you lose BOTH the unknown questions and unanswered known questions. Too much know know tongue

@Jumybecks. Thanks for the tips.

lol.. thats funny, thanks for the advise, will take practice tests and try to figure out a better strategy, which other free tests are there?
Have written barron, powerprep, manhattan, just registered for kaplan, which other ones are available?

Use your 'church mind' to time yourself while taking the test. grin

Divide the total time given by the number of questions and get the 'seconds allowed/question'.

While solving, skip questions you have difficulties solving and later return to them (if time remains) OR carefully strike out unlikely options and pick an option you know feel is correct right.

All questions carry equal marks & there's no negative marking

Leave the difficult ones and score cheap points on the easier ones FIRST.

@happyday. Good job keeping the thread alive! smiley

quantitative comparison questions chop all my time, am so scared to choose any answer for those ones that don't have a final value, will you advise I skip all the qc questions, solve the multiple choice, data interpretation and the rest then when done go back to qc?

General inquiries are addressed to the grad
program directors.
Show interest in the professor research if that is
what you have interest in.
Go to quora and you will find different
ways to approach prospective professors.
You need to read their papers and critique
them to have meaningful conversations with them.

I better start reading. is it just me, but Barron gre simulator has errors in some questions which then lead to picking wrong answer. I wenth thought the questions I failed and realised the solution was different from the actual question. is it just me that has noticed?

The moderator would need to sanction the invite.
I contacted quite a number of professors.
I received a few number of replies.

Ok. were the mails to ask if they could accept you as a research assistant or just to make general inquiry about the program?

If you make between 315 and 325, it would be better if you
tried schools like Oregon state, UTK, UCF too...
Your CGPA is very good. 320 is not too high for a prospective PhD student.
It is competitive, so you have to demonstrate competitiveness too.
I added you to the Facebook group. Keep us posted.

Ok. Thanks a lot. I haven't received notification about being added to the group yet though and did you contact professors during your application process?

Nice job!
Are you part of the GRE Facebook group?
Lots of veterans there. I met some Indians there who helped me
improve my score. They post from disparate sources which helped me
learn from different material in one place.
Secondly, you want to try this site: kaomanfen.com. It does not get better
than that for practice tests, maybe not as great as magoosh. I found out about
this pretty late.

If you make around 320 and have around 3.5/4 GPA, you can apply to K-state as a
safe school. Education here is awesome, the engineering college is a place to be.
Elect is just next to my department in the same complex. The funding is good and the
research is renowned too. Enjoy the experience, share the experience with us and good luck!

NB: Read more about K-State Elect here: http://www.ece.k-state.edu//

Kstate is top of my list of universities, reading your story made me motivated and start my GRE studies. am currently not on the facebook page but my email is oluwatobi_falola@yahoo.com, I will really love if you can add me to the group. my cwa is 74.93% but WES evaluation 3.76 gpa. 320 high oo. my issue with the math is with them integer properties, all them 700<n<800 where n is an odd integer qty a- prime factors of n qty b - prime factors of 2n. guy this kinda questions burst my head. it is not typical math kinda questions.

After 2 weeks of prepping for the quantitative section, I took poweprep test 1 and scored 161, Barron gre simulator and scored 161 in test 1 and 158 in test 2 all in the quantitative section, i realised Barron questions are more complicated than gre Powerprep not cause the questions are difficult to solve but because the way the questions are asked a lot of times aren't clear, through this tests have seen my errors and how some particular types of questions are to be answered.

I still have 1 month and 2 weeks of prep left, I really want much better quantitative scores and I still haven't started verbal prep. So far have used Barron, ets official guide, magoosh videos solving all questions at the end of each chapter in each book.

How else can I improve this scores? what's the advised next move?

I plan to apply for PhD Electrical Engineering direct from bsc and my aim is 166 Q, 150 v and 4 AWA

I installed an app currently from app store. I opened the app and under the writing section, all the AWA topics(I stand to be corrected) with sample responses were there. Please can someone download and see how quality the AWA sample responses are. the app is called gre test prep

not long ago I finished studying "Solid Geometry" section of Barron gre book, taking the practice questions at the end of the chapter I did terribly, scored 7/15. now I went through the solutions and I understood it and saw my faults but then in the real exam, one gets only one shot per sitting. is there any step by step procedure that can be used to simply the problems given and how relevant is the topic itself during the exam, in other words do questions come out regularly under this topic?

NO, Don't study for the GRE and TOEFL, at the same time. It's time-wasting, inefficient and needless, to me. Yes, you need both to boost your chances, and by all means, prepare your mind to take both. But TOEFL tests your everyday English skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. For what it's worth, if you've been able to thrive in a decent Nigerian university (where, of course, English language is the medium of instruction), then you're ready to study in any English environment. In fact, some schools waive the TOEFL requirement for us.

But, like you said, if you want to get a TA, they need to be certain that you'd able to cope with teaching students in American settings.

- Focus, plan and take the GRE first. Score very well on all sections.

- Then, spend the next two weeks on TOEFL prep. You'd only need to take TOEFL practice tests, to be familiar and also see what's being tested on the listening and speaking sections.

Thanks a lot.

I'm sure in your sketch, you drew the minute hand exactly at 10 and the hour hand exactly at 1 (thereby inferring that the two hands are exactly 15 minutes apart) and thus solved 15/60 = x/360 which gives x = 90 (where x is the angle in question).

However, on an actual clock, at 1:50, the minute hand would be exactly at 10 but the hour hand would be closer to 2 than 1 (meaning that they are about 19+ minutes apart. Using 19, should be solved as 19/60 = x/360 which gives x = 114.

My best guess.

Thanks a lot that was the mistake I made. I later found a YouTube video that explains it. search "calculating angles formed by the hands of a clock". like you said at 1:50 the minute hand of the clock is at exactly 10 but the hour hand is closer to 2. To find the degree between 1 and the hour hand, we take 50mins and divide by 60 then multiply the result (5/6) by 30. This will equal 25. then 25 is now added to the remaining 90 degrees making the answer 115.
if the time was to be 2:50, the minute hand is exactly at 10 but the hour hand is closer to 3, so we take 50/60 and multiply the result(5/6) by 30. This will equal 25. 25 is now added to 120 and the ans will be 145.
YouTube really is a good study companion.

I tried solving a question in barron, the quantitative section the part about geometry. The question states that "what is the measure of the angles in degrees formed by the minute and hour hands of a clock at 1:50? " with utmost confidence i solved it and got 90 degrees but was surprised to find out the answer is 115 degrees.
Read the explanation but i still dont understand it. Please does anyone have a clearer explanation to the way this question is solved?

In my opinion, the Reading Comprehension and AWA share similar styles with the Reading and Writing section of the TOEFL. However, the Listening and most especially the Speaking sections of the TOEFL need special prayers preparation.

Thanks.

@happyday Thanks a lot for your prompt reply.
It was advised that we write GRE and TOEFL to increase our chances considering that schools require TOEFL for TA positions, prepping for GRE and TOEFL at the same time I believe would be really difficult. Would studying for GRE verbal and AWA section give enough knowledge to write TOEFL and pass? If not what strategy can be implemented to study for both GRE and TOEFL at the same time?

hello people, been following this thread for a while now and the quality of information here has been top notch. I am planning on writing GRE this November God willing. I want to apply into a phd program in electrical engineering direct from BEng and it has been advised that we contact professors that research in our area of interest. I don't have past research experience in my area of interest infact my final year project was on something almost totally different. how do I make myself look attractive to those professors to even reply the mail I will eventually send. please help out with advises.
