The Economic Sustainability Committee (All You Should Know)

The Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC) is headed by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

- The ESC was constituted by President Muhammadu Buhari on March 30th to develop a clear economic sustainability plan for the nation during and after the Covid-19 experience until 2023.

- The committee is tasked with identifying fiscal and monetary measures to enhance oil and non-oil revenues in order to fund the plan.

- To develop a stimulus package and come up with measures to create more jobs while keeping existing ones.

- To stimulate local production.

- To protect the most vulnerable and the working poor.

- The most important goal is to turn the current challenges into great opportunity for Nigerians and Nigeria in line with Mr President's vision.

Quick Results so far:

- The FG is supporting the financial viability of states and reducing their financial burdens by temporarily suspending repayment of ISPO's as well as other deduction tied to bailout loans with effect from april 2020 to 2021.

- More so, the FG has taken measures including a N500 billion stimulant package that supports healthcare, relief for taxpayers, and an incentive for employers to maintain staff and avoid mass employee cuts.

- The Social Register for households benefitting from the cash transfer program under the social safety net has also increased from 1million to 3.6million.

- The World Bank has proposed two aids. One will be a support package for fiscal relief to ensure economic stability and stimulus for the poor, while the other will be financial support to be dedicated to states government and used for expenditure and interventions.

- The Power Sector Reform Working Group headed by the Vice President is currently working on the review of the status of ownership structures concerning DISCOs based on a presentation of the Governor of Kaduna State. This is in a bid to improve Power Supply for the Nigerian people.

- The FG has announced that new Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) will hencdforth access the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for registration of their products at an 80% discount, over the next 6 months.

Conclusively, most nations all over the world are having their own fair share of economic downturns as a result of the lingering Covid pandemic. Countries like Canada, France, Italy, Germany and even Japan are already experiencing economic recession but the Nigeria Government with these policies is trying all she can to navigate through the storm with minimal negative impact. NIGERIA WILL PREVAIL.
