Eighty female students of Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Mabera in Sokoto metropolis escaped death on Sunday night when fire completely razed down their hostel.

The inferno destroyed the four-room A’isha hostel and valuables but no student was hurt.

It took the combined efforts of officials of State Fire Service and other security personnel to put off the fire suspected to have originated from electrical sparks.

The school authorities declined to speak on the incident, saying that they have no authority to entertain media enquiry. NAN

Of the 56,000 applicants, only 3783 candidates were accepted for admission into the University of Ibadan for the 2017/2018 academic session.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), Academics,Prof. Adeyinka Aderinto, said this at a press briefing with journailsts in Ibadan.

He said 56,172 applicants chose the university through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry.

According to Aderinto,University of Ibadan admissions for 2017/2018 will end in January 2018, while screening of those already guven admission letters will start soon.He noted that a total of 26, 769 candidates scored 200 and above sat for the Post-UTME of the university, added that out of the number, only 9,268 scored 50 per cent and above. The DVC said 3,783, who were finally recommended to JAMB for admission having met the necessary admission requirements.

The Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) may soon become a degree-awarding institution. the Rector, Mr Olayinka Sogunro, said on Saturday.

Speaking on Saturday, the Rector of LASPOTECH, Olayinka Sogunro said that, by the upgrade, the institution would operate National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND) and degree programmes.

He added “We are working on the upgrade of this polytechnic to a university status, but our polytechnic will be different from the conventional university because we are not going to abandon our National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes. We are going to run them concurrently so that students would have acquired the necessary skills and theoretical path upon graduation,’’.

Sogunro also noted that the Lagos State Government has promised to improve the institution’s learning environment in line with the proposed upgrade and complete building the school’s sports ground, which will begin in January 2018.

“Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode said that he would provide a befitting 5,000-capacity auditorium estimated at N3.2 billion, an administration block that was to cost N1.9 billion in 2003, and students’ hostels,’’ he said.

Sogunro called on students and staff of the institution to improve the quality of their research output, noting that the survival of any economy would depend on the quality of its human capital.

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) income from examination forms sold in 2017 was N12billion, of which N7.8 billion was returned to the Federal Government.

JAMB Registrar Prof Ishaq Oloyede made this known while speaking with newsmen in Ilorin. Oloyede also stated that over 2 million candidates are expected to register for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).

He noted that the Board reduced the fee payable for the examination, contrary to reports that the reports that JAMB had increased the examination fee in 2018.

Oloyede said the Board was also working to attract a large number of foreign candidates as their examination fees had been reduced remarkably.

He said JAMB had effected changes to end malpractices process and procedures for registration and conduct of examinations for candidates to, such as the introduction of the CAPS (Central Admission Processing System).
