urrah! Android 8.0 beta oreo build for the Nokia 5 devices released.After Nokia 8, HMD Global has now announced that it is now rolling out Android 8.0 beta oreo build for the Nokia 5 devices.

The news comes from a Twitter post by Juho Sarvikas, who is the Chief Product Officer at HMD Global. He has tweeted, “#AndroidOreo for #Nokia5 has landed on Nokia phones beta labs! Android has never tasted sweeter. What’s more, Android 8.0 Oreo beta for #Nokia6 is coming soon!”

This comes after Sarvikas had earlier replied to a Twitter post saying that beta builds for Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 would be coming “soon”. Further, with this development, we can also expect to see the update come for Nokia 6 devices also.

HMD Global has already released the stable version for Nokia 8. It took at least a month time for the company to bring the stable update after it announced the beta update. So we are expecting similar time frame for the Nokia 5. The final build could be rolled out by next month.

China is using fake LinkedIn profiles to gather information on German officials and politicians, the German intelligence agency (BfV) has said.

The agency alleges that Chinese intelligence used the networking site to target at least 10,000 Germans, possibly to recruit them as informants.

It released a number of fake profiles allegedly used for this purpose.

BfV head Hans-Georg Maassen said the accounts show China’s efforts to subvert top-level German politics.

“This is a broad-based attempt to infiltrate in particular parliaments, ministries and government agencies,” he said.

China has denied similar allegations of cyber espionage in the past and has not yet responded to the German allegation.

The BfV published eight of what they say are the most active profiles used to contact German LinkedIn users. They are designed to look enticing to other users, and promote young Chinese professionals -who do not exist.

Some of the accounts include “Allen Liu”, said to be a human resources manager at an economic consultancy, and “Lily Wu”, who reportedly works at a think tank in eastern China.

The BfV says both accounts are fake.

The agency is increasingly worried that Chinese intelligence is using the method to recruit high-ranking politicians as informants.

They asked users who believed they had been targeted by suspect accounts to contact them.

Last year, the BfV said they had detected “increasingly aggressive cyber-espionage” including “intensifying” attempts to influence September’s parliamentary elections.

They said the hacker group known as “Fancy Bear” or APT28 was especially active – and it is believed to be controlled by the Russian state.

Facebook have introduced the Messenger Kids App and this is because Facebook requires everyone to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account, but according to reports more than half of kids under-13s in the UK have an illegal Facebook account (after their parents helped them to sign up).

In a bid to ensure that the kids experience a legal part of Facebook, albeit, in a controlled environment, Facebook has created Messenger Kids App, a trimmed down version of Facebook Messenger for children.

To use, parents would have to use their own Facebook accounts to create a Messenger profile for their Kids. The app itself looks like the regular messenger but messages that are sent and received are controlled by the parents. Parents also decide who their children are able to talk to or connect with. Then you have the infusion of AR and the ability to use GIFs and stickers as well as the video chat feature.

Things to note about Messenger Kids:

This is not the same as creating a Facebook account.
These accounts won’t be converted to Facebook accounts once the kid turns 13.
Messenger Kids won’t contain ads.
You can’t search for a kid’s name.
There’s no way for parents to secretly spy on what their kids are saying in their chats. Instead, parents have to ask to look at their kids’ screen.

At the moment, Messenger for Kids is only available to iOS users in the US, but the Android/iOS version should be available globally in the coming months.

Apple is close to buying the music recognition app Shazam for about $400m (£300m), media reports say.

Shazam, a UK company founded in 1999, allows people to use their smartphone or computer to identify and buy music through a snippet of sound.

Shazam, which says it has more than 100 million monthly users, makes most of its revenue from commissions paid on referrals to Apple’s iTunes Store.

Neither Apple nor Shazam have commented on the reports on the TechCrunch site.

If the deal is confirmed, Shazam will become the latest in a string of UK technology firms to be bought up by larger businesses.

The influential Music Business Worldwide site points out that the reported price is significantly lower than the $1bn valuation placed on Shazam during its last funding round in 2015.

By acquiring Shazam, Apple would basically cut out the middleman and save money on commissions.

It would also hurt the competition, since Shazam would no longer be referring people to rivals Spotify and Google Play Music.

The deal would also help the Apple Music service gain ground on Spotify, by making it easier for users to find songs and add them to playlists.

At present, Spotify has 60 million users worldwide, while Apple Music has just 27 million.
