Education / Former SUG President Of Uniabuja 06/07 re-called after 12 Years Of Expulsion. by teggypumping(m): 11:04am On Apr 02, 2019
Brief story line on what led to rustication and reinstatement of Comr Igwe Udi Umanta, a one time SUG President Of Uniabuja 2006/2007 Academic Session.

Comr Igwe was an intelligent, vibrant and articulate students leader in his days as the SUG President of university of Abuja. He was very popular among the students, this is due to his proper representation of students before the university management as it borders on students welfare.

The specific incident that led to the rustication of Comr. Igwe and some other leaders of the students union was due to a brutal attack of a students who was rushed to the university clinic, upon reaching the clinic there was no cotton wool in the university clinic to treat the student.

Immediately, this led to a protest and it was indeed a massive one, meanwhile multiple sources was quoted that his administration was under investigation, the Parliament presided by the then deputy speaker of the parliamentary arm of the SUG had earlier suspended Comr. Igwe and some officers of the union such as the fin sec, director of welfare, and others from office before that day over alleged financial mismanagement.

However the students still believes in the leadership quality of Comr Igwe even as a president under suspension, he led the protest on that faithful day.

During the protest, a whole lot transpired among the students and students leaders insisting on better welfare for the students, students leaders saw it as an opportunity to vent their grievances over the poor welfare of Nigerian students on campus.

The students matched to SDP junction, the VC arrived there to address the students but the students refused to give the then VC the audience Hence, The commissioner of police informed the students that the university management will address their issues by 1pm the same day.

The students dispatched and was expecting the VC to address them by the said time while the deputy speaker called some students leader and asked, what if the management decided to close down the university by the said time, What will happen? This further led to an argument of it's possibility, hence, an emergency meeting of the students leaders was held at the SUG building to deliberate on the subject matter.

After much deliberation, the students leaders unanimously agreed to declare the office of the VC vacant if the management decides to close down the university by the said 1pm.

At exactly 1pm, an announcement was made that the university management had shut down the campus, the students leaders unanimously declared office of the VC vacant.

Few months later, the university was re-opened for academic activities and a panel was set up by the university management to investigate the matter.

This led to the invitation of the elected students leaders from the executive and the parliamentary arm of the students union government.

The report of the panel indicted Comr Igwe and others, it also stated it was wrong to have led a protest as a student leader while under suspension and to have declared the office of the VC vacant, this led to Comr.Igwe's expulsion from the university while some other officers of the union were suspended for one or two academic session and about two officers was left unpunished

Under Igwe regime the students right and interest were his priority, his impact transcend generation of comrades on campus, aside the first substantive SUG President of Uniabuja In the person of Dr Kari Abubakar who is currently a member of the university of Abuja council and a major key player in the reinstatement of all the students leaders that was expelled as a result of the 2007 protest.

Igwe Ude-Umanta was a mentor to many of us when we were on campus, he was our mentee, we ran to him to seek knowledge on how to engage the system when the need be. He was in his 400L second semester when he was unjustly rusticated by the then Vice-Chancellor.

Today we are happy and glad that after much effort the university of Abuja governing council granted Comr Igwe Ude-umanta Amnesty to complete his study.

Victory at last.
