EDITORIAL

As we prepare for another general election, TELL believes that our
preoccupation-particularly in the face of the myriad of crises bordering
on insecurity, economic hardship and under-development-should not be to
focus on the geographical location of the candidate to take over the
reins of government nor the religion or language he/she speaks. Rather,
we believe that we should be concerned on the need to put forward
candidates who have the competence, patriotism and strength of character
to pursue for Nigeria a great future capable of overriding the near
paralysis that currently assails the country. So, in the editorial in
this edition we implore the political class and also sensitise the
electorate on why we should desist from using the old method of putting
the individual's ambition or interest above national interest. The

Last August, the editorial board decided that considering the contributions of Wole Olanipekun, SAN, former president of the Nigerian Bar Association and vice chairman of the Body of Benchers to national development, he was worth celebrating as he turned 70 in November. Before arriving at that decision, the board did a review of the cases he had been involved in and his interventions in national matters and concluded that his efforts so far qualified him for such an honour from Nigeria’s leader in magazine journalism. I was to contact him and convey the decision to him, but the initial trials did not yield results. His telephone was just not going through. Initially, it was assumed that for such a very busy person, experiences of that nature were not unusual. But time was running out. We also knew that for someone of his stature, it was important that we got him on time to give a date for an interview ahead of the birthday.

So, I sent a short message. Pronto, a response came: he was out of the country and would be back in September, ‘by God’s grace. We can talk and take it up from there’. Yes, we did talk, but his tight schedule, in the court room and outside the court room, was to stand on the way for some time, though we had his consent for an interview. Between his return in September and his birthday on November 18, there were a lot of events, two of which were a matter on the Anambra election at the Supreme Court, and the convocation lecture at the Redeemer’s University for all Nations, RUN in Ede, Osun State.

We kept faith, confident that he is a man of his words. The time came, and the result is what you are served with here. The TELL team was fully prepared, but we equally met the man who usually hold jurists spell bound anytime he appears before them, very ready for us. It is the cover for this edition: I’M WORRIED FOR NIGERIA-Wole Olanipekun, SAN.

The TELL team of Dejo Oyawale, chief operating office; Wola Adeyemo, executive editor; Sunday Adedeji, senior photo editor, and Gbenga Tanimowo, consultant, were taken through the experiences of the legal luminary, the efforts he made to get Nigeria’s leaders to lead the country to have a true people’s constitution, his assessment of our war on corruption, and what needs to be done to get the country back on the right track.

The interview is supported by three special reports, aside other stories. The first, Skyscrapers: More Disasters Ahead is written by Adekunbi Ero, executive editor. It calls attention to the problem of building collapse and why it has been a hard nut to crack for the authorities. The second, Maina: Guilty As Charged is written by Anayochukwu Agbo, general editor and Abuja bureau chief. It is the story of Abdurasheed Maina convicted of mismanagement of the pension fund, while the third, Wobbling Towards 2023 is a contribution from Suleiman.

In Nigeria, hardly anywhere is safe. Stories of bloody attacks appear regularly in the news, so, few people get shocked by them. The northeast, northwest and southeast, play host to messengers of death. But the other three geopolitical zones are not any better. Not in a country where kidnapping has become a trade. So, those who escape Boko Haram in the northeast, the bandits in the northwest, and north central, must be vigilant and prayerful because of the terrors without borders.

In the southwest, arguably the safest of the six zones, criminal herders are always on the rampage. Amotekun, the regional security outfit, is not sufficiently equipped to totally ward off the armed criminals.

But there is a peculiarity in the wave of criminality in the southeast geo-political zone. It is the indiscriminate killing and arson by so-called unknown gunmen that have claimed the lives of some of the best brains in the zone. And that is aside from the actions of the faceless persons destroying the infrastructure, some of which are the pride of the zone. This is the focus of the story by Anayochukwu Agbo, general editor and our Abuja bureau chief. The story, The Fire in The East, x-rays the disturbing crisis in the area.

The special report, The Governors’ War for Reforms, is on the stance of Southern Governors’ Forum on issues seeming to address the contentious issue of restructuring in Nigeria. It is written by Lateef Olayinka who contributes from Port Harcourt.
