Evolution is indeed a fact accepted by the scientific community, yet it is strongly rejected in most religious circles because it undermines the presence of a creator(though some religious groups have accepted it as still the work of God, and have approached Genesis as allegorical). Most of the people that reject it do so because of their religion and little understanding of what evolution really is, to put it plainly.
Evolution is a process by which organism adapt to suit to their environment, by passing advantageous genes over to their offsprings.
A trait possessed by an organism that helps the organism survive will be passed on to its offsprings, while those with traits not suitable to its environment will eventually die out. Natural selection.
What this means is that organism already well suited to their environment require no evolutionary change and will remain the same, we see examples of this with the shark and crocodiles that have gone millions of years virtually unchanged. While those not well suited will change, examples include humans, whales etcetera.

The peppered moth is a great example of observed evolution, before the industrial revolution(a time in which humans depended extensively on machines) peppered moth were more abundant in the white variety, but after the industrial revolution the black moths became abundant and the white ones scarce, this was because the grime and soot caused by the revolution made it more easy to spot the white moth, hence more of them were killed, while the dark ones blended easily. Now the dark moths reproduced and spread their genes to offsprings, while the white ones already drastically reduced in number will pass on their genes to offsprings who will still have a harder time blending in, and will eventually become very rare and close to extinction. This is evolution, survival of the fittest, we see the process of evolution again in bacteria that are becoming harder to fight off with drugs due to evolution. The bacteria affected by the drugs are wiped out, while does that are immune will continue to multiply, this is troubling as one day they may evolve to the point by which drugs can no longer kill them.

Evidence of Evolution has been found in archeological remains of dinosaurs(ancestors of birds), mammoths(ancestors of modern day elephants, protected from the cold by their fur, which they lost after the iceage. ..
