Michelle Obama started her own garden, which is the
biggest White House kitchen garden so far, when her
daughters Malia and Sasha were not receiving nutritious
meals. They had been eating out a lot and the family's
pediatrician recommended a diet change. This was revealed
in Michelle Obama's book entitled "American Grown: The
story of the White House Kitchen Garden".
This year, the kitchen garden, as it is called, for the first
time included orange sweet potato, a root vegetable that is
rich in vitamin A that most Nigerians and Africans are
conversant with. The sweet potato was chosen to highlight
its role in improving the nutrition and health of millions of
children and women throughout Sub-Saharan Africa by
providing this essential nutrient.
Under First Lady Michelle Obama, the White House kitchen
garden has been expanded and reinvigorated to include a
wide range of herbs, fruits, and vegetables. It serves to
educate people, especially children, on the importance of
good nutrition and the role that vegetables and fruits can
play in improving health. The sweet potatoes that were
planted in the garden were provided by North Carolina
State University (NCSU) and include Covington, a variety
developed at NCSU, and Beauregard, a variety developed at
Louisiana State University.

Politics › INEC Grants Two-day Extension To Six States by terrymason(op): 9:12am On Nov 17, 2014
ABUJA—THE Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC, has granted a two-day extension of the
Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, in six states of the
Federation.

Temporary Voter’s Card
The gesture, which the commission said, excluded
Adamawa State, covered only states under the third phase of
the exercise.
The affected states, according to INEC, are Kano, Edo,
Plateau, Ogun, Imo and Lagos states.
A short statement by Mr Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press
Secretary to INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, explained
that the CVR which commenced on Wednesday, November
12, and was scheduled to end on Monday, November 17,
2014, will now last until Wednesday, November 19, 2014.
“The Chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, approved
the extension to make up for initial challenges in the
exercise and to enable as many eligible persons as possible
to get registered.
“The Commission strongly admonishes against persons
using the CVR to engage in multiple registration, which is a
criminal offence and culprits liable to prosecution,” the
statement said.

Take advantage of extension, Lagos INEC urges
residents
Urging affected Lagos residents to take advantage of the
extension and get listed, the Lagos INEC Public Affairs
Officer, Mr. Femi Akinbiyi, however, advised residents to
shun double or multiple registrations.
His words: All eligible voters whose names were not on our
electronic voters’ register (EVR) should take advantage of
this extension to register. Multiple registration should be
avoided as this will deprive you of your right to vote in
future elections.

Business › FG Introduces Austerity Measures To Secure Nigeria Economy, cause By Oil Drop by terrymason(op): 9:04am On Nov 17, 2014
Following the continued drop in oil price in international
market, the Federal government yesterday announced the
introduction of some austerity measures such as tax
introduction on luxury goods such as champagne, jets,
amongst other, to be implemented to reduce the effect of
the continued oil price decline on the Nigerian economy as
Nigeria is largely an oil dependent economy.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja yesterday November 16th,
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the
Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, said as part of
measures to cushion the hardship that is to come due to the
continued drop of oil price in the international market,
government would henceforth collect “tax on luxurious
goods,” and that this was part of measures aimed at
increasing revenue from non-oil sectors
.
"We all know the definition of luxury goods, we are
still compiling the lists and one of the things we can
tax is champagne, alcoholic beverages, jets, luxury
cars- we will look at the engine capacity, and yachts.
We are putting the list together but we intend to do a
surcharge going forward on these items. The principle
is that those who are better off in the society and I
hope they won’t mind will be willing to share a bit
more in remitting a little bit more to the treasury than
what they normally do on these things.” she said
She revealed that another austerity measure being put in
place by the government is the reduction of international
travel within the public service
“We are not talking about (cutting) salaries and
benefits. We are talking of trainings and travels and
these will be only for critical and essential items
which will be pre-approved by the Head of Service
and the Director-General of the Budget Office and
then if someone invites you for overseas course, you
can go provided they pay for your training and your
stay and you have to furnish evidence that they are
paying before you will be allowed. The purpose of
this is to tell you what we are doing and this team is
calm and will be effective and we are working with
the monetary policy authorities and together we will
manage the economy in a transparent manner so that
people need not have any fear.” she said
The Minister said that after studying the trend in the drop
of oil price in the international market, the economic team
approved a $5 per barrel reduction in the 2015 budget
benchmark price for oil from $78 to $73 per barrel.
“As part of the response, the Medium Term
Expenditure Framework and the Budget 2015
proposal to the National Assembly have been revised.
Government is now proposing a benchmark of $73
dollars per barrel to the National Assembly compared
to the earlier proposed benchmark of $78. Given the
nature of the oil market, we needed to see the extent
and trend of the oil price in order to take the right
measures. Panic is not a strategy. It’s important that
our strategies are based on facts and a clear
understanding of both the strengths of the economy
and the challenges posed by the drop in oil prices
which is currently at $79 for our premium Bonny
Light Crude. The drop in oil prices is a serious
challenge which we must confront as a country. We
must be prepared to make sacrifices where necessary".
On the advise from some scholars to print more Naira notes
so as to reduce the effect of the oil price drop on Nigerians,
the Minister said such an action if implemented would be
disastrous to the nation as it would increase the inflation
rate of the economy
"Printing money without adequate revenue support
will lead to serious consequences for the country. It
will spur inflation as the experiences of Germany in
the early part of the last century and more recently,
Argentina and Zimbabwe demonstrate. This
prescription will victimise the poor and the middle
class that it is supposedly protecting.” she said
She said one of the best ways of managing the situation was
to create more jobs. She announced that President Jonathan
would today November 17th launch the 4th edition of the
You Win youth empowerment programme.
“To show how serious government is about job
creation, President Jonathan will tomorrow, (Monday)
November 17 launch the 4th edition of YouWin to
support another 1,500 entrepreneurs along with a
private equity fund for entrepreneurs. That is an
expression of government’s commitment and
seriousness to job creation.”
Dr Okonjo-Iweala said the reduction in price of the oil
prices in the international market may continue but that
government would do everything possible to make sure
Nigeria is not adversely affected.
She said from the $4.1bn (N656bn) in the Excess Crude
Account, the government would be withdrawing $2bn
(N320bn) between now and the end of this year to take care
of critical expenditure.
“We will work in such a way that we won’t deplete
the ECA because we have to leave something for next
year but we might go to tap about a half of it ($2bn)
or slightly less than half to be able to meet
expenditures that are crystalizing at the moment that
we need to make.” she said
She also stated that infrastructural expenditure would still
continue as the economy can only improve when
infrastructural development is in place.

Family › Akwa Ibom Govt. Sets Up Family Court To Tackle Alleged Child Witchcraft by terrymason(op): 7:06pm On Nov 16, 2014
Justice Theresa Obot of the Akwa Ibom State High Court,
said that the state government had set up a family court to
tackle the increasing cases of child witchcraft in the state.
Obot told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in
Abuja that the court was created after a commission of
enquiry set up to investigate allegations of child witchcraft
concluded its assignment.

According to her, the court is set up to prosecute cases and
allegations of child witchcraft in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the
Commission of Enquiry was set up in Nov. 2010, following
the rampant stigmatisation of children in the state for
alleged witchcraft.

According to her, priority attention is being given to cases
of child witchcraft in the state.
“We in the judiciary lay so much emphasis on the child
witchcraft stigmatisation and the courts now make it a point
of duty to address those issues.
“So when such cases come in, we try not to limit ourselves
to only the punishment of alleged child witch, but also to
provide counselling.

“Because in a family court, when a child and the parents
have problems, we offer reconciliation,’’ Obot said.

She said, “anybody who says a child is a witch or wizard,
he or she will be prosecuted, after which they will also
receive counselling.
“So, that has helped to reduce incidences of child witchcraft
in Akwa Ibom state.’’

“We are not saying that it is over, but so far the incidence
has been reduced to the barest minimum.’’

Obot said the courts also recommend counselling for parents
who stigmatised their children after they had been punished.

Obot commended the state government for its campaign to
stop the stigmatisation of children over alleged witchcraft.
She also noted that the state government was doing everything
humanly possible to put an end to the issue by organising
annual seminars on child rights laws and other related
issues. (NAN).

It is kind of funny but serious how is the going to decide the case?

Your opinion is highly needed nlers

Boko haram should tell us if there’s hidden gold in

to secure Chibok since its people have gone through alot
this year alone.
Politics › Boko Haram Militants Capture Chibok Again by terrymason(op): 3:48pm On Nov 15, 2014
Members of the outlawed Boko Haram sect have, again,
seized Chibok, the home of over 200 schoolgirls abducted
by the insurgents in April.
The insurgents attacked and seized the town on Thursday
evening, residents said.
The attackers have repeatedly targeted villages around
Chibok over recent months.
A senator from Borno State, Ali Ndume, told the BBC
Hausa service that security forces deployed in the town ran
away when the insurgents attacked.
Residents said the insurgents headed to the centre of Chibok
and declared that they were taking it over as part of their
caliphate.
The insurgents have changed tactics in recent months by
holding on to territories rather than using hit-and-run
attacks that have left thousands dead.
It was, however, learnt that the attackers were those
dislodged from Mubi by soldiers on Thursday.
A security source said troops engaged the insurgents in a
lengthy gun battle at the headquarters of the Chibok Local
Government Area.
Our correspondent could not ascertain the casualty figure as
of the time of filing this report.
The source said, “The Boko Haram fighters attacked Chibok
again on Thursday night but the soldiers gave them a good
fight.
“From what we heard, the insurgents were those dislodged
from Mubi following attempt by soldiers and the vigilante
members.
“You know that vigilante members were drawn from all the
local government areas of Adamawa. Some also came from
Gombe and Kano states.”
But another security source said the insurgents only attacked
Chibok and left without occupying the place.
Our correspondent could not get the Defence Spokesman,
Maj. Gen Chris Olukolade, to comment on the attack as the
calls to his mobile telephone line indicated that it was either
switched off or in an area outside of network coverage.
Chairman, Chibok Community in Abuja, Chief Tsambido
Abana, who confirmed the Chibok attack on Friday,
explained that the situation in the town was dicey and the
condition of residents uncertain.
Abana said, “I have been getting information that Boko
Haram has attacked Chibok town again. Those that were
able to escape to a place where there are mobile networks
phoned me that the militants were shooting at people and
for now, we don’t know the number of those that have been
killed.
“I also learnt that the Army and the vigilante group have
responded to the attack and they are engaging the terrorists,
but for now, the situation is not clear. I believe within a day
or two, we would get a clear picture of the situation.”

Politics › ISIS Announces Its Own Currency Islamic by terrymason(op): 9:08am On Nov 14, 2014
Islamic terror sect ISIS is planning to mint its own currency
in gold, silver and copper: two gold, three silver and two
copper.
Its aim is to stay away from the "tyrant's financial system,"
ISIS said in a statement broadcast on CNN last night. The
group also said another statement will be out soon to
explain the new currency's exchange rate, and where it can
be found.
According to ISIS, "the move is purely dedicated to God
and will remove Muslims from the global economic system
that is based on satanic usury"
The wealthiest terror organisation, which calls itself the
Islamic State, has seized large expanse of territory in Iraq
and Syria and seeks to establish an Islamic caliphate there.
And world leaders are watching?

Politics › GEJ Promised Not To Victimise Anybody Who Criticised Him And His Administration. by terrymason(op): 3:37pm On Nov 12, 2014
After seeking the face of God, in quiet reflection with my
family and having listened to the call of our people
nationwide to run, I, Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan,
have accepted to re-present myself, on the platform of the
Peoples Democratic Party for re-election as the President of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the 2015 general
elections.”
With these words, President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday
formally declared his intention to contest the election to the
admiration of jubilant party faithful.
Jonathan made several promises aimed at wooing the
mammoth crowd but was reminded by the PDP Governors’
Forum that the road to the February 14 poll would be
rough.
Ironically, the declaration took place at the Eagle Square,
Abuja, a venue for most national ceremonies which the
Jonathan administration had in the past years avoided due to
security reason.
The event, which also held under tight security, was
condemned by the All Progressives Congress which argued
that it should have been solemn considering the fact that the
nation was grieving over the bombing of 50 schoolchildren
and teachers by Boko Haram a day earlier.
At the declaration ceremony, Jonathan admitted that
corruption remained a stain on his administration but
promised to eradicate the menace in all sectors of the
economy.
Enjoining public officers to live by example, Jonathan
vowed that he would bring to justice those who perpetrate
corruption in his government.
"The President also promised not to victimise anybody who
criticised him and his administration.
He said Nigerians’ views under his administration, no
matter how freely expressed, would not send anybody to
exile or prison".
