Organized crime in America, particularly the Italian-American Mafia or La Cosa Nostra, as it is popularly called by its members can be traced back to the urban ghettos of the late 19th century. During this period a large wave of Italian immigrants arrived in the United States. Many of these immigrants faced economic hardships and discrimination. In these challenging conditions, some turned to criminal activities as a means of survival. Also, many of these Italian immigrants brought with them the tradition of secret societies and criminal organizations from Italy. Over time, these groups evolved into more structured criminal enterprises in the U.S. The Sicilian Mafia, for example, had a significant influence on the early formation of the American Mafia. Like every other structured enterprise, these American Mafias are usually divided into ranks, headed by the Crime Boss, who is also known as the Don or Godfather. Occupants of this position usually make all major decisions, resolve disputes, and keep everyone in line. They are also usually very ruthless, violent, prominent, and adored. The History of Prison In Yorubaland started with what is known as Tubu, a word synonymous with prison. Prior to the use of Tubu , the Yoruba People did not keep or kill prisoners instead, they had a tradition of banishing offenders and criminals from the village including their movable properties or sometimes with their family members out of the village. However, when the series of civil wars that took place in Yorubaland in the 18th century began, several kingdoms began building confines to accommodate their prisoners of war. These confines became known as ‘Tubu”. Some historical accounts suggest that it was the arrival of the European Slave traders in the previous century, that prompted the idea. It is imperative to note that these Slave traders built holes and confinement in order to keep slaves and transport them to Europe. The Use of “Tubu” was such a widespread practice that every chief had his tubu for criminals. The offenses for which an offender could be so held ranged from drunkenness, disobedience, etc. The Ogboni society also held offenders in their prisons for offenses such as ritual murder, witchcraft, and notorious burglary. The History of the prison in Yorubaland and Nigeria at large is highly undocumented. However, there are a few available accounts that are highly informative but are unquestionably dated. Before diving further into these accounts, it is imperative that we consider the notion of Justice and imprisonment in Yorubaland. There is a widespread belief that Africa had no history before the coming of the Europeans in the 15th century. Many upholders of this credence credit the trans-Atlantic slave trade/ colonialism as the beginning of Africa’s history. Contrary to this belief, Africa’s history comprises numerous empires and Kingdoms, with multinational structures and populations. These entities are responsible for shaping the continent’s cultural practices and even some of the present societal structures. With that being said, here are the 10 largest African empires in History. 10. The Ethiopian Empire (1270–1974) The Ethiopian Empire formerly known by the exonym Abyssinia was one of the largest African empires in history. The empire historically spanned the geographical area of present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea from the establishment of the Solomonic dynasty by Yekuno Amlak approximately in 1270 until 1974 when Emperor Haile Selassie was overthrown by a military coup, marking the end of the empire. Throughout much of its existence, the empire was surrounded by hostile forces (The Ottoman, Italian, and numerous Islamic Sultanates) in the African Horn; however, it managed to develop and preserve a kingdom based on its ancient form of Christianity. The Empire was occupied by Italy from 1936 to 1941. The occupation ended with Ethiopia’s liberation by Allied forces during World War II. 9. The Mutapa Empire (1450–1629) The Mutapha Empire also known as the Monomotapa Empire, was a medieval kingdom that existed in present-day Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and parts of Zambia and South Africa. The Empire existed from approximately 1450 to 1629. It was founded by a Bantu-speaking group known as the Karanga, who migrated from the Great Zimbabwe civilization. Mutapa is believed to have emerged as a successor to the decline of Great Zimbabwe. The Mutapa Empire controlled extensive gold resources and traded gold with merchants from the East African coast, the Swahili city-states, and later with Portuguese traders. The Mutapa Empire faced internal conflicts, succession disputes, and external pressures from neighbouring African kingdoms and Portuguese colonial interests. These factors contributed to the gradual decline and fragmentation of the empire by the early 17th century. READ MORE: https://tgnnews247.com/top-10-largest-african-empires-in-history/ |
