I think what we lack is a proper central midfielder. The link between the defence and attack is always breaking because of lack of proper central midfielder.

Our passes always goes back to wing or defence because there's no safe place in the midfield.

The strikers don't get proper chances because ball doesn't come through the proper channel.

Honestly I noticed this clearly yesterday and against Bayern.

The central midfield is lacking a press resistant midfielder who stays in position. The pressure cannot be absorbed by wings alone when playing against fast-paced teams & the defense needs to be confident passing central. You can blame one or two players in mistakes leading to goals, but if you don’t fix the fundamental issues you’ll be running in circles.

I was rewatching some Chelsea highlights during conte first season and amazed how much Matic handled that role with Kante doing the rough job. Lavia should’ve been a good fit in DM with Caicedo in CM/B2B but shame he can’t get out of the hospital bed.
