This is what Jude Okoye said in a recent interview with HipHop World Magazine. Keep in mind sometime in August last year, Square Records had dumped May D who had released few hit tracks under the label including ‘Ile Ijo’, ‘Soundtrack’, and the remix he did with Akon and P-Square. According to the statement signed by Jude, the split was due to the irreconcilable differences between the two parties. And the dumping had come as a surprise to MayD. Here's in full, what Jude said and why he says he ain't signing anyone else. I don’t know about Peter and Paul but me personally I won’t sign any artiste until P-Square stops singing, that is the same thing I said when you asked me why I’m not shooting videos for other artistes, everyone that comes under this umbrella will start comparing. Let me give you an example, one of the issues we face is that, when you bring in an upcoming artiste who has not being invited to even play just one show and you’ve spent like 15million on that artiste without even signing like you said and the person wakes up to say he wants to have the car P-Square is driving, the house P-Square is living in, then you’ll wonder like wait a minute, even if I have all these things and I give him, am I motivating him? Am I giving him things that’ll make him hustle hard? If he has everything he wants will he still struggle? SOURCE |

In an emotional goodbye to over 100,000 supporters, the Pope revealed on Sunday that he was stepping aside because God told him to do so. In a voice raw with emotion, Pope Benedict XVI told pilgrims in St Peter’s Square that he was resigning on February 28 because God had called on him to devote himself to prayer. He said God had told him ‘to climb the mountain’. It was observed that pilgrims filled the piazza to witness a historical moment and thank the Pope for his eight year Pontificate at the Angelus Prayer. Despite recently looking tired and frail, he spoke in a clear, strong voice, repeatedly thanking the faithful for their closeness and affection as they interrupted him, again and again, with applause and cheers. The Pope stressed that he was “not abandoning the church.” Instead, he said he would serve the church with the same dedication, but would do so “in a way more suitable to my age and my strength”. He also said he would continue to serve through meditation and prayer after his historic abdication. He completed the last Angelus of his tenure by saying he would always be close to the Church. The 85-year-old officially steps down on Thursday. He will spend his last years in seclusion in a cloistered monastery within the confines of Vatican City. SOURCE

Arguably Nigeria’s biggest musical export aside D’banj, P-Square continue to make a mark and become a form in the American music industry. Seems they’re also making friends over there too, and recent photos show them hanging out with YMCMB superstar Drake. Should we hope for an Alingo remix with Drake? SOURCE

I'm a Nigerian musician. GV:You have often been regarded as one of Nigeria’s finest musicians, how does that make you feel? Makes me remember how much I need to keep working on my music GV:How was Growing Up like? Well it was like most other middle class nigerian families. You know things being more hard than easy. GV:You Studied Law For A while,What informed Your Decision To Go into Music fulltime? Well as cliche as "dropping out" is with artistes in Nigeria mine was a conscious decision. I already knew what I wanted to do. Education isn't confined to school but you still have to know what ur getting into. GV:You Have proven Yourself as one of Nigeria Best Producers .How Did u get Into Music Production? Well I learnt it. Or rather learnt the fundamentals myself and then studied software. However a lot of producers just learn the software these days. The digital age has brought laziness and a lack of discipline. So any one can bang on a keyboard and call themselves a"producer" these days. However there's a lot more to being a producer in the conventional sense. GV:We Heard You Produced 'oleku's beat In 30 min how true is this? Yeah it's true... GV:Till Date Songs From Your Album Are On Mass Replay..whats ur favourite song of all time? Well I like all my songs differently. None more than the other. They all came from my soul one time or the other. GV:You Have a unique style of music varying from R&B to Root Raggae To Pop etc Where do You Get Your Inspiration? From just being alive! Inspiration lives in the air. But you have to experience to harness and understand its true potential. people learn from experiences. I learn from my pain. GV:Which Interenational Artist Would You Like To Collaberate With? None. Lol GV:You Havnt Realeased An Album Since 2010 whats the reason behind this? What's the rush though? Lol.. It took me my whole life to do the first one so time doesn't kill. Been working .. Gathering material for my new projects. GV:When Is The JagzNation Mixtape Dropping,Fans Are Eager? Mm .. Right after my album. That should be October ish. GV:Can we take a peep into the Choc city family? Whats the relationship like btw u guys? Well we are fam.. We get along as cordially as most adults do lol.. GV:For someone that works hard, how do you relax? My work relaxes me.. When I finally am able to write a song it's incredible amounts of emotion and intellect involved .. So for me it's an all in one process. GV:Who Is your female celeb crush? Hmmm.. Chaka khan . GV:Who are the people you look up to in the industry? Hmmm.. Funny enough I look up to no one. Fame comes with women. How do you manage yours? Well I'm not famous or a celebrity. I'm a musician. I have a couple friends who are celebrities.. I'll ask them lol GV:Hmmmm...Any "Special" Woman In Your Life? If I told you it wouldn't be special no more. GV:You Havnt Been Linked With Any Major Controversy .How Do U Maintain This? Well maybe cuz I'm always home. Can You Tell Us 5 things About You That YouR fans dont know? My fans love my music. My music is my life. That's why I'm still a musician. I'm discovering things about myself everyday. SOURCE

The journalist is Biodun Kupoluyi, the publisher of E24/7 Magazine. He is alleging that the senior pastor of Household of God, Chris Okotie, has barred him from attending his church after he wrote a story alleging that Rev Okotie is dating an undergraduate named Miss Naomi Hoffman. (See the story above) Biodun is an off/on member of Household of God. He granted an interview to Encomium magazine this week, telling his side of the story. See it below... I received the news from a man claiming he's representing the church that he has been directed by the pastor of the church and members of Household of God church that I should not come and worship with them. His reason, he said, was premised on E24-7 magazine's expose - pastor Chris finds new love, says I will not get married again, but may opt for surrogacy soon. I found it shocking that a day after the publication hit the streets, his media department sent a release out and it confirmed our story. He actually made those statements and we reported it. I think he did not think anybody could have known about his romance with the girl, Naomi. He was caught off guard..but as a journalist, I owe our teeming readers that responsibility. I feel fulfilled, though I will miss his theatrics, his stage performances and verbosity. My perception of the church and my respect for the man has changed. He is not a serious preacher of the gospel. The job of a good shepherd is to seek a lost sheep, not to ban a sheep or send away a sheep from the fold. It is only in our environment that these kind of things happen. Because I worship in a church, I can't write the story of the pastor even if the pastor is doing what is wrong? But the pastor and the church will hail me if I praise him or do a PR story for them. Despite the ban, if journalistic duties calls I will go there. In fact we were there the following week after I was barred. It was the week he claimed Christians can do tattoos and plastic surgery. We went with a whole crew, looking forward to a show down. I'm a free citizen. I can not be cowed. And I stand by my story on Naomi. That is not disputable! SOURCE

This is the story of a young boy whose parents were murdered during 2002 riots in Kaduna. He was aged 11 years at the time. His parents, Mr Austine and Mrs Josephine Moses, were missionaries until they met their untimely death. The boy left his house to play football but returned home to see that all his parents had laboured for had been razed down and he would never see his mother and father again. He was taken to London by his uncle almost immediately after the incident. While in London, he began deploying his football skills. Though his parents were murdered, his passion for football was never killed. He played football for his school and later for a local Tandrige League club until Crystal Palace FC approached him. From that point, his career progressed in leaps and bounds. This player played for England's under 16, 17, 19 and 21 teams between 2005 and 2010 scoring 11 goals for England during this period. He later moved to Wigan Athletic and now he plays for Chelsea. This footballer is called VICTOR MOSES. His story is a touching one, I share his pains. I also share his courage. He had a choice not to step into Nigeria again but he didn't take that option. When the call to serve his fatherland came, Moses dumped England and embraced Nigeria... That is patriotism! Today, we see a Victor Moses bringing joy to every Nigerian including those who may have inspired his parent's death... That is Love! On Sunday, Moses would stand for the National Anthem and pledge allegiance to a country that couldn't defend his parents... That is faith! Moses would deliver the "African Cup of Nations" trophy to Nigeria not minding what had happened in the past... That is forgiveness! Moses rose through bitterness and despair to the limelight of hope and courage. He never gave up on his country. He persevered... That is purpose! If someone like Victor Moses, despite the bitter past, never gave up on Nigeria, then why should we....! ONE NIGERIA SOURCE

Rapper Ikechukwu and his model/beauty specialist fiancee, beautiful Sarah Ofili have called it quits...again! The couple who got engaged in October 2011 after dating off and on for many years separated late last year. My sources say November/December. My attention was actually brought to the new development after I posted Ikechukwu's bathroom photo on this blog a few days back and mentioned Sarah Ofili. I got a mail the following day with info about the break up. I've been doing a little digging since then, and the few people I asked confirmed that they've gone their separate ways. But the thing is, this is not the first time the pair will separate...they always reconcile, so hopefully they will get back together...again! Sarah hinted at the cause of their break up a few weeks back on her Twitter page SOURCE

In an exclusive interview , winner of Big Brother Africa Amplified, Karen Igho, opened up on a lot of issues, including the reality show, her relationship with Denrele Edun and the infamous squabble at a Smirnoff gig. Excerpts: What has changed about you since you won the show in 2011? I am still Karen Igho, but a mature one. A lot has changed. I am older and wiser now. You will not catch me doing certain things. I have seen life in a different way and I know a lot more now. How does it feel being the reigning Nigerian with the Big Brother crown? I feel very honoured and privileged that I still have the position as the last Nigerian winner of the show. However, I must add that to win the BBA is not a joke, whoever will, has to be a lot more entertaining than myself, Uti and Kevin Pam put together. I just think it is not time yet for a Nigerian. It’s just the right person needed. What do you think was responsible for your victory? I would say God. While I was preparing for the show, the last thing on my mind was how to win. I just wanted to have fun and learn as much as I could. I was lucky to understand that the best strategy for such games is to have no strategy to avoid unnecessary surprises. What do you mean by unnecessary surprises? Unnecessary surprises can be anything. You can wake up one day and realise you have been betrayed by a fellow housemate. We were young individuals locked in a room with cameras and constantly watched by millions of people. It was psychologically draining. We all had to fight for attention, respect and win games too. We needed to shout, be crazy or cause trouble to get all these. What is your take on Nigeria’s performance at the last edition? Let me first congratulate all of them for going there. I cannot blame any of them or say exactly what went wrong. Ola and Chris left on health grounds, which is a cogent reason. One’s health is a lot more important than money, but if they both had remained in that house, they would have won. Goldie too did her best. They are all cool people but I guess it was not time for a Nigerian. Do you think Goldie was being true or was playing a game? I cannot say anything about that because I am not Goldie. I don’t know if she was being real or fake. I can only speak for myself. I was real and I did my thing but we are different. Do you still feel hurt about the stories wriiten about you while in the house? Not any more I have forgiven everybody involved. The things written about me were not only false and untrue but slanderous too. I was locked up in the house and could not defend myself. People believed these untrue stories, about me and it continued to spread but I thank God I won the show and I have been able to win the hearts. Which of the stories got you most? The one about me being a stripper was untrue. It still baffles me till date. I was locked up for 90 days with a sum of money at stake and as crazy as I was, I didn’t kiss or made love with any guy and people could still write that I was a stripper. Were you a stripper? I was never a stripper. People don’t even know anything about me but are quick to believe the terrible things they heard. My mom is a very strong Christian and she built my spirituality. People who saw me like a wild card girl do not understand what it is being locked in a room with lots of alcohol and nothing to do. It is impossible not to misbehave but once you are back into the normal world, things change. How many times have I being caught smoking in public? What then were you doing while in the UK? My uncle helped with my trip to the UK and I went there to study. I studied Business Administration in Southwark College during which I took a summer class in Theatre Arts. All through my stay there, I survived in a legit way. I joined the UNICEF and other charity organisations, which had African countries in mind. I was also a sales girl for Karen Millen. Which of the stories were true? My having a rough childhood was true. My being a stripper wasn’t true. The breast story was true. I genuinely did the implant because I had breast lumps and two of my sisters have done the same (operations). Tell us about your growing up I am the first born of ten siblings. My family is a loving and caring one. They stood by me during the Big Brother days. My mother fought severally to defend me. I am from the Urhobo in Delta state, but I was born in Plateau state. I schooled in Jos and Warri. My growing up was not easy. My parents were separated and I had to live with my grand mum. It was not easy at all but I thank God. What did you do with the money? I built a house for my mum, another for my grand mum and I invested the rest. I am still hustling to make more money. What is happening to your clothing line? Karenified is still there. I rushed the first collection to meet with my birthday last year and because I wanted to raise some money for an orphanage, I planned to visit. It was successful but I want it bigger, so now I am taking my time and getting to understand the creative side of me better because I want it to reflect in the designs. How did acting come into the picture? While I was in the UK, studying business administration, I took a summer course in acting and tried my hands on some Shakespearian works. That and many other experiences I gathered improved my confidence in acting and presenting which are some of the things I now do. What is your relationship with Denrele? God brought Denrele into my life in a funny way in 2008. I just came back for a holiday (from UK) and my cousins invited me to his birthday party. There we met and exchanged contacts and became friends. He has been instrumental to where I am today and I am very grateful. How true is the story that you both are dating? Somebody started the joke on twitter recently and it went viral. Denrele is my brother and he knows the kind of guys I like. Can you marry Denrele? I don’t know the future but Denrele and I cannot get married. We have become one family. Why are you yet to be married? No be man go come first? Let’s just say I am waiting for God’s time but I am still working on my career and build the brand. What kind of man do you like? I want a God fearing and down to earth man and there must be strong chemistry. Which Nigerian male celebrity will you date? I know quite a few and would not want to call names. Besides most of them are married. If I mention anybody, you people (press) will be on my neck and once you see me with the person, another story begins. Nigerian acts are all wonderful people. How did you get the Naija FM job? I got the Naija FM job through Collete Otusheso (MTV). She encouraged me and introduced me to my boss, Gbemi (Olateru Olagbegi), Deji Awokoya (Beat FM) and since then, its been fun for me. I love the Naija FM family. Culled From SOURCE . |
Hilarious Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon took to his Twitter page today to congratulate Nigerian Super Eagles over their victory in yesterday’s match with Ivory Coast. In the congratulatory tweet, the grammatically inclined Nigerian official said: “Its my emblem pleasure to congratulate our Superior Melofarm exclamagated Bermasaur on their recent victory against Ivory Coast. As the refermed, solid giants are to face Winners of the later game in an uncavoured camfamgnam match, my empyrean paradisiac rendezvous advice to the Super Eagles is for them to recumbently metragaloblicly believe in God. The split between Banky W and Wizkid, inside sources say, resulted from an alleged high difference in what Banky W gets from revenues made by the young star, Wizkid. The ‘injustice’, according to what WE gathered, has been bothering Wizkid until he summoned the courage to ask for an improved contract from Banky W, which hit him (Banky) by surprise. “You know Wizkid is the backbone of EME music label. The boy (Wizkid) feels that Banky W has been milking too much from him with the large chunk of what Banky W takes from what the boy makes. Lets see an example of EME’s costs & income ( for Wizkid) EME signs Wizkid and pays the following -Advance to Wizkid or equivalent -They pay for the music videos (2 to 5 million per video) -They pay for all radio & tv promotion (millions of naira) -They pay for all online marketing and promotion (feauring on bellanaija.com alone is a 6 to 7 figure amount) -They pay for all air travel costs to shows, award shows, interviews etc. -They pay for club dj marketing -They pay for street distribution -Lets not talk about the nigerian factor & the amount of “brown envelopes” EME has to give out annually to “oil the wheels of success”..some perhaps that Wizkid doesn’t know about. Its commendable the amount of talent Wizkid has but without the investment of EME in the early days, the influence of the label owners & the business acumen of the label, Wizkid could still have ended up successful, but nowhere near how successful he is now. EME TAKES 50 PERCENT OF EVERYTIN WIZKID GETS, OSAGIE USED TO TAKE 25 PERCENT AND WIZKID 25. BUT WIZ SAW HOW DAVIDO WAS POPPING INDEPENDENTLY AND MAKING MONIES, SO HE TOOK MATTERS IN HIS OWN HANDS, TOOK OSAGIE OUT, GOT GODWIN TOM, GIVES HIM 10 PERCENT, HE IS TRYING TO REDUCE EME’S 50 PERCENT BUT THEY ARE ACTING UP COS THEY SHOOT HIS VID AND ALL, AND ALL EXPENSES ARE ON THEM. WIZ IS NOT HAPPY. THEY ARE OWING HIM MONIES, FROM THE PEPSI DEAL AND OTHER DEALS. WIZ HAS TAKEN MATTERS INTO HIS OWN HANDS, HE IS PLANNING TO RELEASE AN ALBUM THIS YEAR, BUT THE EME CALENDER IS DISRUPTING HIM COUPLED WITH THE FACT THAT EME DOES NOT WANT TO BULGE ON THE PERCENTAGE AND THE MONIES THEY OWE HIM. THIS IS BUSINESS. WIZ MIGHT LEAVE, BANKY IS GETTING PEOPLE TO TALK TO HIM. BANKY IS NOT THE OWNER OF EME, JUST A DIRECTOR, THERE ARE OTHER PPLE INCLUDING SEGUN AND CO “Wizkid has asked for an improved contract because the present one allocates much of Wizkid’s earnings to Banky W. You know when you are coming up, you sign any kind of deal because you just want to climb stardom. “That is the situation the boy finds himself but Banky felt hurt that Wizkid could ask for an improved offer after what he (Banky W) has done for him. “This was the beginning of the problem between them. The boy even threatened to leave the label sometimes ago but Banky W felt it was a joke. He took it with a pinch of salt. Now, he is at a crossroad and confused on what to do,” a source said MORE FROMSOURCE |

Bobbi Kristina Brown isn’t letting her family’s drama get in the way of her happiness. Whitney Houston’s daughter is said to be engaged to her “adopted brother” Nick Gordon, Us Weekly reports. Brown, 19, was recently photographed in Atlanta holding hands and kissing Gordon, the 22-year-old man whom Houston took in 10 years ago after his mother was unable to care for him. According to the magazine, Brown has been wearing a sizeable diamond engagement ring that was once worn by her mother. “The situation is beyond sad,” a source told Us. “Whitney never formally adopted Nick, but he lived with her and Bobbi Kristina from the age of 12 and they were raised like brother and sister. Nick came from a really bad background.” In addition to their alleged plans to wed, the couple is reportedly living together in one of Houston’s Atlanta properties. “Bobbi Kristina is still so vulnerable since her mother passed away,” the source added. “But Nick has become like her rock.” Not surprisingly, Brown’s family is said to be “really upset” about the young couple’s blossoming romance. Namely, Houston’s mother has voiced her disapproval. A friend of Cissy Houston told TMZ that the family matriarch said “what they’re doing is incestuous.” She is reportedly afraid Gordon is a bad influence on Brown, and wants him evicted. After rumors that the two are dating surfaced earlier this month, Gordon took to Twitter to slam haters. “Yea we got a little closer and what!” he wrote. He later added, “For the stupid ppl out there, she gave birth to 1 child. And she trusted me with Everything!” On Wednesday, Gordon told ABCNews.com that he and Brown are “just close – just going through her mom’s passing and grieving together.” SOURCE

The Senate, on Tuesday, asked the federal government to revoke the operating certificate of Dana Airline. Federal law makers also recommended that Harold Demuren, the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), be sacked for negligence and incompetence. The call followed the consideration of the report on the June 3, 2012 crash of a plane belonging to Dana Airline by the Senate and House of Representatives Joint Committee on Aviation. Dana Airline resumed its operations last month, seven months after the aviation authorities temporarily grounded the airline over a plane crash involving one of its fleet at Iju-Ishaga, a suburb in Lagos State, on June 3, 2012. The crash killed all 153 passengers, as well as the crew members on-board, including some people on the ground. The House of Representatives had in December made public the recommendations of its Committee on Aviation, which directed that Dana Air should be stopped from operation as well as sack of Demuren. Popular actor, Saidi Balogun needs no further introduction in the movie industry. He has remained one of the most popular faces among the thespians. Balogun, who spent most of his formative years in the Northern part of the country, said he is not resting on his oars. In a recent interview, the actor speaks on his relationship and life after being divorced. At 46, you should be getting tired of staying single. You once said that you don’t plan to quit bachelorhood then, are you planning to remarry now? I don’t want to talk about my marital life, for now. I would really love to talk about my job because that’s what I am particular about as far as I’m concerned. I am enjoying bachelorhood more now because it gives me enough time to think deeply on how I can better the lot of those who are looking up to me. I also want to concentrate on my new movies. I have a girlfriend that I love and respect so much, but I would like to keep it like that for now. Is your girlfriend also in the movie industry? There you go again. I don’t want to drag her into this interview. Are you scared to talk about her because your former girl friend, Funke Adesiyan, was an actress and the relationship ended on a sad note? Some issues are better kept undisclosed, so that you don’t raise another dust that would take many months to settle. As you can see, I am doing fine. I don’t want to talk on who was that or when did that happen and to who. So Fathia Balogun’s chapter has been closed in your life? I knew you were heading for that question when you started playing around with your questions. Anyway, I love the way you have coined it, but the fact is that I won’t talk about Fathia. I will just love to say no comment, if I am permitted to use that sentence. SOURCE

n investigation carried out by Sahara Reporters, has revealed that the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, practically handpicked the new Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Ambassador Nuhu Audu Bajoga. The report has it that Sambo chose Bajoga, just a few hours after the death of Governor Patrick Yakowa in a helicopter crash was confirmed. It is believed that Bajoga is not the choice of the new Governor of the State, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, but completely that of thr Vice President. President Jonathan was fully briefed of the development – how the Vice President is juggling his presidential ambitions and running the politics of the turbulent State. It was also revealed that Sambo was in Kaduna on Monday to canvass support for Bajoga. “The choice of who will be the next deputy governor of Kaduna State was taken here in Abuja, just few hours after it was confirmed that Governor Yakowa was dead. The Vice President took that position and quickly chose Bajoga who was in Kaduna. Bajoga was told as well as all the key players in the Vice President’s camp. We were here in Abuja when the news of the crash occurred, and the President was greatly troubled because of his good relationship with Governor Yakowa of Kaduna State. And only later on, the President got wind of Sambo’s decision,” their source said “The whole was done here; they called the man from here and told him their demands. While all the noise of the battling for deputy governor was going on in Kaduna, the search has already been concluded and that is why the President refused to dabble into the matter, knowing that Sambo has chosen deputy governor few hours after the crash.” Acording to Sahara Reporters, “The source further said that, Sambo’s action to remove Bajoga, who was at the time chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state was Sambo’s way to fix his own crony as chairman of the party. “Sambo, according to other sources in Kaduna and Zaria has a crack team of his pundits who are presently working with the governor on how to manage Kaduna’s tense politics of religion and ethnicity. cc:http://./13k5 |
E! was excited about the news of Kanyé West and Kim Kardashian’s expected bundle of joy. They even spoke about the possibility of the journey and birth being chronicled for the show, which would bring big ratings. But those ratings will have to come from somewhere else. Kimyé has already made the decision to not feature their child on “ Keeping Up With the Kardashians”. According to TMZ, while the child is an infant, he or she will not be displayed for the world to see. Sources close to the couple told TMZ that they do not want their child involved in the family franchise. The couple is opting to keep that part of their lives private. Sound familiar? South Africa is marketed to the world as Mandela’s rainbow nation, where everyone is proud of their race and heritage. But for some black South Africans there is such a thing as being too black. A recent study by the University of Cape Town suggests that one woman in three in South Africa bleaches her skin. The reasons for this are as varied as the cultures in this country but most people say they use skin-lighteners because they want “white skin”. Local musician Nomasonto “Mshoza” Mnisi, now several shades lighter, says her new skin makes her feel more beautiful and confident. She has been widely criticised in the local media and social networking sites for her appearance but the 30-year-old says skin-bleaching is a personal choice, no different from breast implants or a having nose job. “I’ve been black and dark-skinned for many years, I wanted to see the other side. I wanted to see what it would be like to be white and I’m happy,” she says candidly. Over the past couple of years Ms Mnisi has had several treatments. Each session can cost around 5,000 rand (£360; $590), she tells the BBC. Unlike many in the country, she uses high-end products which are believed to be safer than the creams sold on the black market but they are by no means risk-free, doctors say. Costly beauty Ms Mnisi says she does not understand the criticism about her new appearance. “Yes, part of it is a self-esteem issue and I have addressed that and I am happy now. I’m not white inside, I’m not really fluent in English, I have black kids. I’m a township girl, I’ve just changed the way I look on the outside,” she says. Studies have found that men are also beginning to bleach their skin Studies have found that men are also beginning to bleach their skinThe dangers associated with the use of some of these creams include blood cancers such as leukaemia and cancers of theliver and kidneys, as well as a severe skin condition called ochronosis, a form of hyper-pigmentation which causes the skin to turn a dark purple shade, according to senior researcher at the University of Cape Town, Dr Lester Davids. “Very few people in South Africa and Africa know the concentration of the toxic compounds that are contained in the products on the black market and that is concerning. We need to do more to educate people about these dangerous products,” says Dr Davids. He says over the past six years there has been a significant increase in the number of skin lighteners flooding local markets, some of them legal and some illegal. This is what prompted their research. Local dermatologists say they are seeing more and more patients whose skin has been damaged by years of bleaching – most of the time irreversibly. “I’m getting patients from all over Africa needing help with treating their ochronosis. There is very little we can do to reverse the damage and yet people are still in denial about the side-effects of these products,” says Dr Noora Moti-Joosub. In many parts of Africa and Asia, lighter-skinned woman are considered more beautiful, are believed to be more successful and more likely to find marriage. The origin of this belief in Africa is not clear, but researchers have linked it to Africa’s colonial history where white skin was the epitome of beauty. Some have also suggested that people from “brown nations” around the world tended to look down upon dark-skinned people. ‘I don’t like black skin’ The World Health Organization has reported that Nigerians are the highest users of such products: 77% of Nigerian women use the products on a regular basis. They are followed by Togo with 59%; South Africa with 35%; and Mali at 25%. South Africa banned products containing more than 2% of hydroquinone – the most common active ingredient in in the 1980s. But it is easy to see creams and lotions containing the chemical on the stalls here. Some creams contain harmful steroids and others mercury. While skin-lightening creams have been used by some South Africans for many years, they have become more common recently with the influx of people from countries such as Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo, where they are even more widespread. In a bustling African market in the centre of Yeoville in Johannesburg, it is skin lighteners galore. Walking through this community is like walking through a mini-Africa: you can find someone from any part of the continent here. I notice that many of the women have uncharacteristically light skin faces while the rest of their bodies are darker. Some even have scabby burns on their cheeks from the harmful chemicals used to strip the skin of pigmentation. They don’t want to speak openly about why they bleach their skin, or even have their pictures taken. Psychologists say there are also underlying reasons why people bleach their skin – but low self-esteem and, to some degree self-hate, are a common thread. cc:http://./13iv

Despite the fact that some weeks have passed since the fire disaster that wiped out five children of Mr. & Mrs. Augustine Ikwuagwu on Comfort Oboh Street, Kirikiri Town, Lagos, its bitter memory still lingers. Indeed, the tragedy has been a nightmare to the couple. When Saturday Sun met with the couple recently, pain and agony have overwhelmed them, as they recounted their loss. Speaking amid tears, Mrs Margaret Ikwuagwu, said her fine kids, Chukwuemeka (13), Ifeanyichukwu (10), Bright ( , Joy (6) and Victoria (4) were sleeping in the house when the incident started at 10pm. She said that all efforts to rescue the children failed. “I asked my children to go and sleep in the room while I was preparing to close shop for the day. Then, shortly, someone ran to tell me that our house was on fire. I abandoned everything I was doing and ran down to the house. When I got there, the fire had already covered the whole place and I could not enter my room to rescue my children,” she said. Mrs Ikwuagwu explained that she cried for help, but no one came to her aid. “When I got there, I met a mammoth. My co-tenants were busy removing their children and property. They started the rescue as soon as the fire broke out, but never bothered to inform me that our house was on fire. I tried to rescue our children, but I could not because the fire had covered our room. I heard the voices of my children shouting. But could not save the situation. I cried for help, but no one assisted me. “I forced myself inside the room when I heard my children crying for help, with the hope that I would bring out at least one or two, but I ended up being burnt by fire; so I ran out.” The woman revealed that as she was shouting, her husband arrived at the scene. “When my husband arrived, we joined hands to rescue our children. He pushed the door, but the fire was too much; he tried to force himself through the window; yet he did not succeed. We called our children, but they did not answer us. When we tried and saw that there was no hope again, we fainted, having watched our five children, cash and other property ruined by fire. We were rushed to the hospital immediately and did not know what happened later,” she stated. Mrs. Ikwuagwu stated that it was after some hours that she and her husband recovered from the shock. “When we recovered, we were asked to come to Kirikiri Police Station to make statement. Thereafter, we were asked to come and take our children for burial. So, we went to bury them at Trinity Cemetery, Olodi Apapa.” She revealed that before the fire disaster, her family had planned to travel home on December 22 for Christmas. “I do not know why this thing happened to us. Why should our five children go like that? We were preparing to travel home on December 22 for Christmas. Now here we are. Where do we start and how far do I go from here? I know that it was not an ordinary fire. But, however, God will take control of the whole thing,” she lamented. Narrating what happened, Mr. Augustine Ikwuagwu, popularly known as Osuofia, said that when he arrived he tried his best to rescue the children, regretting that the fire had already taken over the entire compound. He said: “On December 12, I went to my wife’s shop and saw my children sleeping and I asked my wife to take them home, which she did. We did not lock the children inside the house, as people are saying, rather. Our 12-year-old son, Chukwuemeka, took them home, and when the fire started, no one cared to call us and as a result, our children got burnt to death. We have three male and two female children and they died same day. As it is, I have no house, no property and no child. People are saying that we locked the children inside the room and lighted a candle, but I am telling you that we did not lock them inside and we did not use candle at all; what we use was rechargeable lamp.” He also stated that the cause of the fire is yet to be known. “We are still surprised about how the fire started and up till this moment, we have not been able to know the cause of the fire. But God has the answer,” he stated. Mr. Ikwuagwu said the fact that they watched their five children suffer and died in the fire was the worst thing that has happened to him and his wife. “I wanted to kill myself because I do not know where I am going from here. I do not think, I can cope because my entire life struggles are gone. After five children, we have decided not to bear children again. But now, we are starting again,” he lamented. He stated that since the incident, life has not been easy for his family, revealing that he and his wife are still receiving treatment in the hospital. “It has not been easy for us since then. We have no child, shelter, clothes, money and property. Also, we have not recovered from the shock. So, anyone who knows what it takes to lose five children and everything should please assist us to come back to life. My wife’s spirit has gone down; she has been thinking of how to get another child,” Ikwuagwu lamented. cc: http:///rNYa

After surviving a ghastly motor accident, with one of his legs reported to be “totally broken”, Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State, has had surgery at a private hospital in Abuja. Captain Wada underwent the operation at Cedar Crest Hospital, Garki, Abuja, after initial treatment in the intensive care unit of the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja. The details of the surgery were not immediately made available, even as the hospital was surrounded with the presence of heavily armed security personnel. It has however emerged that the accident happened, after one of the tyres of the governor’s official car, a Lexus SUV, unexpectedly burst in motion. “When the tyre burst, the car somersaulted and other vehicles in the convoy rammed into one another,” a source said. “In the ensuing commotion, state officials struggled to save the governor from the wreckage of his official vehicle and evacuated him to the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja. “Several others on the entourage were also seriously injured, but the ADC’s case was the worst.” Idris Muhammed, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and Wada’s aide-de-camp (ADC), died instantly while eight others were injured. Journalists were barred from taking pictures of the wrecked vehicle, by about 15 mobile policemen, who cordoned off the area. Mr. Yabagi Bologi, the State Commissioner for Information, later issued a press statement confirming the sad incident. “The Governor survived the road mishap and is in stable condition. Sadly, however, the governor’s aide-de-camp (ADC), Idris Muhammed, an Assistant Superintendent of Police died on the spot,” he said. “The accident occurred yesterday afternoon at Emi Woro village, about 12 kilometres into the state capital, in between Prime Polytechnic and the Salem University, in the Ajaokuta Local Government Area. “The convoy was returning from an annual Igala Education Summit which the Governor declared opened at the state university in Anyigba.” The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Richard Elesho, quickly dispelled rumours that the Governor was dead. He said: “I am very happy to announce to you that the Governor is not dead. He is not dead at all. I don’t want to tell you where he is. The Governor is in stable and healthy condition. It is unfortunate that we lost the ADC in the auto crash. “I have also heard people saying the driver died. No. It is not true. There were just three people in the car, the Governor, the ADC and the driver. The ADC died on the spot, but the Governor and driver are in stable condition. Why do you want me to tell you where he is? “If I am bold enough as a colleague to let you know that we lost the ADC, why do I have to lie to you? The Governor is alive, hale and hearty, but I don’t have to disclose the exact location of the Governor to you; must I? I only have to tell you as a colleague that the Governor is alive. “He had the first treatment at the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja. After we left the Specialist Hospital, we went to Government House. But I don’t have to tell you his exact location at the moment.” cc: http:///rMxk

Door frames, shelves and public transport don’t worry most people, but when you are the world’s tallest family, they’re a danger. Keisha and Wilco van Kleef-Bolton have a combined height of 13ft 5in. Seven foot of that is Wilco; his wife stretches the measuring tape to 6ft 5in. Not surprisingly, the children are following in Mum and Dad’s (pretty huge) footsteps. Lucas is 4ft 5in at the age of six — average for a ten-year-old. Eva, four, is 3ft 7in, typical of a girl a year older. And at six weeks old, Baby Jonah is just two inches shy of 2ft long. The children are destined to lives of stooping through doorways and retrieving things from high shelves for old ladies in supermarkets. But what is it like to look down on everyone you meet? I decide to pay this extraordinary family a visit at their cosy two-bedroom home in Dagenham, Essex, to find out. At 5ft 7in, I’m three inches taller than the average British woman, but I feel like an Oompa Loompa around Keisha and Wilco. view more pics @:http:///GtAhw2WL

A worker at a waste disposal site has found 10,000 yen cash in a stream of pulverised rubbish, police say. “There were about a thousand (10,000) yen (N 18, 080, 000) bills that came out of a pulveriser unscathed,” a spokesman at the Asaminami police department in Hiroshima prefecture, in Japan’s west, said today. He added that there were also 2300 fragments of bills destroyed by the machine at a municipal facility that processes large waste, such as cupboards and mattresses, that cannot be collected by regular garbage pick-up. Police suspect the owner of the cash might have forgotten the money was there when he or she threw away some furniture. “We believe it is unlikely there is anything criminal in this, although we must say we don’t know much about this money at all,” the spokesman said. The cash was found on Monday. If no one comes forward within three months, the waste disposal facility will have the right to claim the money, the spokesman said.He added that there were also 2300 fragments of bills destroyed by the machine at a municipal facility that processes large waste, such as cupboards and mattresses, that cannot be collected by regular garbage pick-up.
