PDP raises the alarm over S’West states’ debts about 1 day Tweet 0 • Flays sealing off of Kalu’s property • Taraba leaders bicker over Suntai THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in the South West geo-political zone yesterday condemned what it called the tragic debt situation which the All Progressives Congress (APC) government was plunging the South West states. This happened just as some stalwarts of the PDP in Taraba State Sunday exchanged hot words over when and how the Acting Governor, Garba Umar, could become the substantive governor of the state. Also, the PDP through its acting National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Tony Caesar Okeke also condemned the sealing off of a property belonging to former Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu for criticising the recent deportation of Nigerians from Lagos State, describing the development as “reminiscent of the infamous Decree No 4 of 1984. In another statement by its national auditor, Alhaji Adewole Adeyanju, the party called on Nigerians to be very wary of the actions and sayings of the APC governors and lawmakers on the issue of the local government autonomy. The PDP described the sealing off of Kalu’s property as a clear signal of the dictatorial and inhuman treatment to be expected from an APC controlled government. The South West PDP leaders who attended a reconciliation meeting of the party in Abuja disclosed at the weekend that the least indebted state in the South West at the moment allegedly owed at least N60 billion. They also confirmed that the PDP in the zone had begun serious strategic and coordinated moves to snatch Ekiti State away from the All Progressives Congress (APC) next year. To this extent, the PDP chapters in the six states said they had established a joint consultative forum that is charged with the responsibility of identifying and addressing critical political challenges for the party within the zone before the 2014 Ekiti governorship polls. Secretary of the forum and chairman of PDP in Ondo State, Ebenezer Omotayo Alabi, lamented that more than any other regime in the past, the present set of governors in the South West had thrown the zone into alleged huge indebtedness. According to Alabi,” the APC states in the Southwest are the most indebted states because of the bad economic policies in place. No state in the South West today is not indebted, the least indebted state in the South West is allegedly owing at least N60 billion”. Chairman of the forum and Ogun State PDP chairman, Adebayo Dayo, disclosed that the joint action was not targeted at only Ekiti governorship but the entire South West. According to him, the reconciliation exercise embarked upon by the national leadership of the PDP would only complement the peace process, which had reached an advanced stage in the South West chapters of the party. Dayo’s position was supported by his Oyo State PDP counterpart, Abdul Kareem Yinka Taiwo, who disclosed that a lot of house mending measures had already been taking to make the take over of South West by PDP in 2015 a success. “We are starting from Ekiti and Osun from where we will intensify the campaigns to take the remaining four South Western states in 2015. The South West PDP leaders expressed satisfaction that many aggrieved PDP members in the zone had embraced the reconciliation measures. Osun State PDP chairman, Alhaji Gani Olaoluwole, confirmed that the PDP had become more united in Osun at the moment than it was in the past. “We have made a declaration for 2014 and we have made it clear that we are sending Aregbesola out next year. They are counting on pockets of disagreements within the PDP but they will be disappointed because we are in very strong unity in Osun PDP now,” he said. PDP members in Taraba State yesterday exchanged hot words over the health condition of Governor Danbaba Suntai. A chieftain of the party, Alhaji Baba Adi, faulted a statement credited to Senator Emmanuel Bwacha that only the death of Governor Danbaba Suntai could turn the acting governor into a substantive governor. Senator Bwacha who represents Taraba southern senatorial district had in an interview stated that President Goodluck Jonathan only became substantive President after the death of former President Umar Yar’Adua and that the event at the national level was a precedent that should be applied to the Taraba situation. But Adi, in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday said the senator’s statement was a deliberate twisting of relevant provisions of the constitution, clarifying that the constitution mentioned permanent incapacitation and death for a governor to cease to hold office. www.theguardianmobile.com/readNewsItem1.php?nid=16529 |

Tweet APGA appeal panel upholds disqualification of Soludo, others 2013-08-17 23:09:08 Tony Ojielo-led appeal panel of the All Progressive Grand Alliance on Saturday in Abuja dismissed the appeal filed by a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Charles Soludo, and five others challenging their disqualification from the Anambra State governorship election for lack of merit. Six persons who were disqualified by the party's Governorship Screening Committee had appeared before the panel to contest their disqualification by the committee. The appeal panel which has Tony Ojielo as chairman, Bala Bako (Secretary), Dr. Mic Adams, Ogometu Ukpenetus and Hadiza Gogori as members, had earlier promised to make its decision known within 24 hours. But a source in APGA told SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday that "all the appeals were dismissed for lacking in merit." The screening panel of APGA had on Friday disqualified six of the party's aspirants, who showed interest in the November 16 governorship election in the state. A statement by the chairman of the governorship screening panel of APGA, Tayo Sowunmi; Secretary, Mr. Ifeanyi Mbaeri and a member, Onwuka Ukwa, had stated at the conclusion of the panel's sitting that some of aspirants failed to scale through the test. The six aspirants that failed the screening were Mr. Emmanuel Nweke; Ogbuefi Nnaechetta; Mr. Chinedu Idigo; Dr. Chike Obidigbo; Mr. Oseloka Obaze and Soludo. However the panel said seven aspirants were successful. The successful aspirants are, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwogbo, Mr. Paul Odenigbo, Mr. Uche Ekwunife, Mr. Willie Obiano, Mr. John Nwosu, Mr. John Okechukwu Emeka and Nwachi Patrick Obianwu. It was learnt that some of the reasons given for not clearing the aspirants ranged from non-presentation of voters card, lack of evidence of financial strength to execute the campaign, incomplete certificate and their inability to submit tax clearance. mobile.punchng.com/output.php?link=http://www.punchng.com/news/apga-appeal-panel-upholds-disqualification-of-soludo-others/ |
2015: We ‘ll stop APC in South East – Igbo youths on August 08, 2013 at 1:02 am in News BY ANAYO OKOLI UMUAHIA—THE youth wing of Igbo Socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has vowed to stop the All Progressives Congress, APC, from winning elections in the South East geo-political zone in 2015. Rising from a meeting in Enugu, Ohanaeze youths advised the APC to concentrate in the North and South-West as the South-East zone was a no go area for the party. Organising Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, who spoke on the resolution adopted at the meeting, said Igbo youths would never be associated with a political party that had exhibited ethnic and religious bias as the APC. According to him, the Yoruba/Hausa alliance which the new party epitomizes has never favoured Ndigbo since independence and cautioned Ndigbo against embracing the party. Isiguzoro said: “APC should therefore concentrate in the North and West. We (Ohanaeze youths) will make sure that APC does not win even a councillorship seat in the South-East. The party was formed out of acrimony. We will not tolerate any gang up in the South-East”. He also said Ndigbo youths would not give President Goodluck Jonathan a single vote in2015, “unless they sit with him and take stock of what his administration has done or not done for the zone.” Isiguzoro said Igbo youths resolved at the meeting that Abia State governor, Theodore Orji, should be the link between them and the Presidency, since he had shown enormous concern for the welfare of youths across the entire Igboland. He said: “Governor T.A. Orji is the only person we have confidence in. Governor T. A. Orji is the reason why we have remained calm in spite of the bomb attacks targeted against Igbos in various parts of Northern Nigeria. “We have also been restrained by our brother who is the Chief of Army Staff. We are therefore giving the President 28 days to call us for a roundtable so that we can take stock or else, we will not guarantee him of even a single vote in 2015.” www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/2015-we-ll-stop-apc-in-south-east-igbo-youths/ |
2015: Buhari’s ambition splits APC Our Reporter August 8, 2013 4 Comments » …Presidency, PDP blast new party From IKENNA EMEWU and TAIWO AMODU, Abuja Former presidential candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Major General Muhammadu Buhari(rtd) may after all contest the presidential ticket of the newly- registered All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015. It was revealed that in spite of the entreaties to the national leader of the CPC and one of the prime movers of the new party to drop his ambition for a younger politician with a considerable national appeal, his insistence on fighting for the party ticket has unsettled his loyalists. Recall that before the consummation of the merger deal by the opposition parties, the former military head of state had in a recent media chat said he could drop his ambition for a better candidate. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, is being touted as a more marketable candidate by the concerned Buhari faithful in the APC. “By our calculations, a younger and vibrant politician should run as our candidate so as to give the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a good fight; but from the way things are, we are stocked in between telling Buhari out-rightly not to run and allowing him to continue with some ripple effects coming our way later,” a Daily Sun source revealed. But this is coming as the PDP yesterday accused the APC of lacking in a politician of pedigree among its rank for the 2015 presidency. The party was reacting to the Tuesday’s call by the acting National Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande at its maiden press briefing on President Jonathan to abandon PDP for the new party. Acting National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Caesar Okeke, declared that for asking President Goodluck Jonathan to join its fold, the APC has admitted that it has no presidential material in its fold. The PDP claimed “ the leadership crisis rocking the opposition party just a few days after registration is an indication that the APC is a party of desperate power mongers whose only aim was to satisfy their egocentric interests”. The ruling party further claimed that the APC has confirmed to Nigerians that” it does not believe in the leadership abilities of its prominent leaders, General Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu”. Also, the Senior Special Adviser, Public Affairs to the President, Dr Doyin Okupe, in a statement, noted that the widely reported invitation by the APC on President Jonathan to join its fold clearly justified its earlier stance that” the opposition political party lacks the human resource to provide good and effective governance for the Nigerian nation and will always have to depend on the Peoples Democratic Party for leadership in all ramifications”. Okupe queried the rationale for the invitation to a sitting president to dump his party for an opposition platform. “ While it is not out of place for political parties to make overtures to those they believe have the capacity to assist them gain greater acceptability among the electorate, it is noteworthy that this invitation is being extended to a sitting President who was elected on the platform of another political party and whose unquestionable performance in the last two years have often been derided by this same political cynics. “It is noteworthy that in extending its invitation to the President, the National Chairman of the APC made reference to what it called “crisis rocking the PDP”; forgetting that the real test of leadership is not in running away from crisis but in resolving them firmly and fairly. The very nature of democratic politics envisages conflict of ideas, interests and aspirations which must be aggregated for the overall good of the public and which all true leaders must be mentally and emotionally prepared to tackle,” Okupe said www.sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/2015-buharis-ambition-splits-apc/

Why I dumped APGA for APC – Okorocha Our Reporter August 5, 2013 From GEORGE ONYEJIUWA, Owerri In an apparent reaction to the suspension slammed on him by the national leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), for alleged anti- party activities, Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Rochas Okorocha, has , again, explained why he joined the newly resgistered All Progressives Congress (APC). He stated that the future political fortunes of Igbo were better served in the new mega political party. He also stated that APGA lacked the national spread to enable Igbo to achieve the desired political impact in the country. Speaking during the 2013 national convention of the Imo State Congress of America, in Atlanta, United States of America, Okorocha said the well-being of Igbo remained paramount in all his actions and would continue to take steps to assist Igbo to regain their rightful place in the political equation of Nigeria. “APC remains the best vehicle to promote the interest of our people. PDP has marginalised the South-East and has nothing to show for all its years in power,” he said. Okorocha urged Igbo to embrace the APC because it guarantees equity and political opportunities denied by the PDP. He pointed out that the purported action of a faction of APGA was of little political consequence, as the party lacked the national spread to ensure that Igbo make significant headway in the political leadership of the nation. The governor described the APC as a national party made up of progressive elements determined to ensure equitable distribution of political offices to all tribes in the country. He also noted that APC was set to redress injustices meted by PDP to Igbo race, which is one of the tripod on which the country stands, while urging all progressive South easterners to line up behind the new party and ensure it produced the next leaders of the country at all levels. “Igbo have not produced the president, vice president, Senate president, Speaker of the House of Representatives or the Chief Justice of the Federation, but I am confident under APC, one or more of these positions will come to the South-East.” www.sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/why-i-dumped-apga-for-apc-okorocha/ |
Anenih Woos Danjuma, IBB, Abdulsalami By: George Agba, Chibuzo Ukaibe on August 5, 2013 - 3:24am Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Tony Anenih yesterday pleaded with political leaders to assist President Goodluck Jonathan in tackling the security challenge in the country. For his part, President Jonathan said the time was ripe for politicians in the country to put an end to ethnic politics. Anenih, who spoke at the celebration of his 80th birthday in Abuja yesterday, urged former president Olusegun Obasanjo, former military president Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, former head of state Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and former minister of defence Lt-Gen. TY Danjuma to join hands with Jonathan over the security challenge in the country. “I am looking forward to a day when IBB, Obasanjo, Abdulsalami will sit down with Jonathan for dinner or breakfast in the villa; then I will go home and sleep,” Anenih said. “Nigerians look up to TY Danjuma for help. As we embark on another political journey, Nigerians look up to you sir. I hope you will not fail us.” Speaking at the ceremony, Jonathan said inflammatory comments made by certain individuals were worrisome, even as he added that Nigeria needs more nationalistic politicians in the mould of Anenih. “We can learn from him because he has always been a nationalist. From him let’s learn to sing the song of unity and use our cleavages for good and not to promote dis-unity. Some provocative statements have come from elder statesmen who witnessed the civil war. But Tony Anenih has never made such statements; this explains why the hall is filled to capacity today,” Jonathan said. Obasanjo had earlier led a long list of PDP bigwigs to Our Lady of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral, Area 3 Garki, for the thanksgiving service held for Chief Anenih’s birthday. In his homily, Cardinal John Onaiyekan called on public officeholders to stop neglecting the poor, even as he urged them not to condone acts of greed which he blamed for the high level of corruption in the country. Describing Anenih as an elder statesman and a major political player, Onaiyekan further called on leaders to emulate the commitment to service which he has displayed over the years. In his vote of thanks, Anenih insisted on the need for forgiveness, just as he enjoined former and current leaders to learn to forgive. He said, “The leaders are gathered here today and this is why we have to ask ourselves, why can’t we forget the past and move forward? I must confess that I was thrilled that President Obasanjo came to the church. This is the kind of forgiveness leaders have to show for the country to move forward.” Urging past and present leaders to jettison any grievances and support the current administration, Anenih said, “Abdulsalami Abubakar and IBB are here; they can give us peace. I believe that if all of us here put our hands behind him (President Jonathan) and genuinely advise him, even our worst enemy, Boko Haram, will be afraid.” Former defence minister TY Danjuma described Anenih as a patriot who loves Nigeria with strong commitment to unity and progress of the country. He advised politicians to emulate his leadership qualities. Top politicians, captains of industry as well as highly placed government functionaries graced both venues for the birthday celebration. They include Senate president David Mark, Gen. Dannjuma (rtd) who chaired the reception, Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, Bauchi State governor Mallam Isa Yuguda, and co-ordinating minister for the economy Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Others are Dr Alex Ekwueme, former chief justice of Nigeria Alfa Belgore, Governor Aliyu Wamako (Sokoto), Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola. www.leadership.ng/news/050813/insecurity-unity-anenih-woos-danjuma-ibb-abdulsalami |
PDP, APC trade words over relocation of non- indigenes from Lagos * New party decries alleged politicisation of issue * Reverse policy, Babatope tells Fashola, Igbo groups give ultimatum THE People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the alleged forceful relocation of some indigenes of Anambra State by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Fashola administration. However, the APC has described as a very dangerous game that could threaten the nation’s unity Governor Peter Obi’s alleged sensationalisation of the recent “home return of 14 (not 72 as widely claimed)” Anambra indigenes from Lagos. In a statement issued in Lagos Sunday by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said instead of reaching out to his Lagos counterpart as he has done on less important issues in the past, Governor Obi fired an “over-dramatised letter” to the Presidency and leaked such to the media, thus setting off an avoidable friction between the Igbo and the Yoruba that will not augur well for Nigeria’s unity. Meanwhile, former Minister for Transport, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Sunday urged Governor Babatunde Fashola to reverse the policy. Also, South-East Ndigbo Lagos, an umbrella body of all the major market associations and Igbo professionals in Lagos State threatened to take legal and economic action against the government within 21 days. A statement issued by PDP Acting National Publicity Secretary, Tony Okeke, Sunday described the relocation as “inhuman, abominable and callous”, as it was a violation of their constitutionally-guaranteed rights to reside in any part of the federation. The measure showed the wickedness of the APC-led government and portrayed the party as one with the agenda to promote sectionalism and stoke the fire of division among Nigerians, it claimed, adding that it was a dehumanisation of innocent Nigerians by the state. APC, however, maintained that Obi’s “resort to media campaign, which has triggered a vicious Lagos State/Yoruba bashing, is aimed at gaining an undue advantage ahead of the forthcoming Anambra governorship election, instead of being borne out of sheer altruism.” ‘’Equally guilty of indiscretion at best and deliberate peddling of falsehood at worst are the various ‘analysts’, ‘commentators’, out-of-luck NGOs and organisations that have jumped onto the bandwagon of Lagos bashing over the issue, mischievously tagged ‘deportation’ instead of what it is (home return for proper integration), when they could have sought the truth from the Lagos State Government. ‘’Even some of the respectable Igbo socio-political organisations failed the simple test of fairness by not unearthing the truth before making pronouncements. Even if they do not trust the Lagos State Government, they could have at least inquired about what happened from their son, who is a ranking member of the cabinet of Lagos State,’’ APC said. Babatope said: “I have read all arguments on the deportation of some Anambra State indigenes living in Lagos State by the Fashola administration. I submit that the Lagos State’s action is highly unfortunate. It is undemocratic, illegal as well as being a grand assault on the fundamental rights of the affected Nigerians under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “Governor Fashola must urgently reverse this disturbing policy with apologies to the affected Nigerians. Fashola has a good record of performance in office but his present action will destroy his credibility. All well-meaning Nigerians must denounce this obnoxious policy.” A statement by South-East Ndigbo Lagos Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwafor, stressed that the illegal deportation, repatriation, relocation, or any of such similar treatment of Ndigbo anywhere in Nigeria is totally unacceptable. They, therefore, urged Fashola to redress the unpleasant situation or else they would have no option than to “demonstrate our sadness legally and economically after 21 days.” “Ferrying humans overnight in trucks only brings back sad memories of the many years of slavery when Africans were packed like sardines and inhumanly shipped abroad. There is absolutely no justification for this very degrading and inhuman maltreatment of Ndigbo. Curiously, this indecent treatment came from a government which Ndigbo hold in very high esteem and had always hugely supported; a government which has unprecedentedly transformed Lagos State and respected human dignity and rights. Ndigbo therefore, find it difficult that Governor Fashola’s government should be linked with this indecent act more so when Ndigbo have lived harmoniously with the good people of Lagos,” the group stated. www.theguardianmobile.com/readNewsItem1.php?nid=16058 |
