Business / Bdcs Operators Reject Cbn’s Dollar Purchase Policy by THEJOURNALIST: 6:04am On May 28, 2018
Bureaux de Change (BDCs) operators yesterday rejected Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN’s) directive that operators make at least three dollar purchases weekly or be sanctioned.

The apex had also threatened to punish banks that fail to instantly sell foreign exchange (forex) to eligible travelers and boost dollar liquidity in the market.

The new CBN’s moves followed last week’s depreciation of the naira against dollar, which saw the local currency closing at N366/$1 at the parallel market on Friday from N361/$1 sustained in nearly one year. The naira remained flat at the parallel market trading at N364/$1 for the first three trading sessions in last week before losing one naira on Thursday and Friday respectively to close the week at N366/$1 despite $310 million injected into the interbank foreign exchange market by the CBN.

But when contacted, the Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) rejected CBN’s mandatory dollar purchase order to BDCs. The group rather, asked the regulator to review BDC’s dollar purchasing rate to align with rate commercial banks’ buying rate.

ABCON President, Aminu Gwadabe, said in a statement that CBN’s directive on BDCs should be put on hold. He said: “The CBN’s directive at this time of our operational difficulties is no doubt precarious and vague and was intended to emasculate a sector that has helped the system to stabilize and thus unacceptable”.

The CBN had directed in a statement signed by its Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor, that: “All BDCs shall henceforth access forex from the CBN on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It is compulsory that all BDCs access forex at least three times weekly. Any BDC that fails to access the forex window at least three times weekly shall have its licence reviewed by the CBN”.

The CBN’s goal, Okorafor said, is to ensure that eligible travelers are able to access foreign exchange for the Business Travel Allowances (BTA), Personal Travel Allowances (PTA), school fees payment and medical bills payment. It is also in line with its plan to deepen foreign exchange liquidity available in the market.

Finding by The Nation also showed that CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele and key CBN officials are expected to within this week, go on spot-checks in some unspecified branches of commercial banks to monitor compliance with directive on immediate dollar sale to travelers.

Gwadabe insisted that the regulator should firstly, merge BDC dollar buying rate with that of commercial banks and also pay ABCON disbursement fees as it is practiced globally. For instance, Travelex also collects forex disbursement fees from the CBN.

The ABCON leader urged BDC operators to remain calm and focused, ahead of and executive engagements with the CBN and ‘further communication soon’.

Gwadabe therefore recommended that the CBN cuts the three market days for buying dollars to two at $30,000 per market day. He said: “The rate between the banks and BDCs should be merged for uniformity and fairness. A situation where the banks buy dollar from the CBN at lower rate than the BDCs is no helping the market stability drive. Besides, ABCON should be considered for disbursement fees like Travelex in the collection centres to ameliorate the new assignments”.

BDC operators insisted that making Fridays a market day for dollar purchase and funding done same day will be difficult to achieve and therefore should be discouraged. Gwadabe assured the CBN of BDCs’ continuous support in enabling the regulator achieve its core mandate of ensuring exchange rate stability and liquidity access.

He added that: “The BDC sector is confronted with many challenges such as multiple exchange rate, abnormal bank charges, Value Added Tax (VAT) and Commission on Turnover (COT), parallel market operators and illegal International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs), porous international boarders, complex documentation requirements and poor capacity/ skills of operators”.

Continuing, he said: “For instance, the increasing difficulties arising from over regulation and complex documentation requirements that licensed BDC operators are facing in carrying out their daily legitimate operation remain worrisome. These hitches have negative impact on BDCs’ efforts toward compliance to statutory and regulatory requirements. For instance, six units within the CBN are involved with BDC regulations, supervision, licensing, monitoring, saying this constitutes multiple regulation of a unit of the financial sub-sector that is only involved as a small market player”.

He said a BDC operator is expected to render daily, monthly, quarterly, half yearly and annual returns to these various departments of the same corporate body, which could be very cumbersome, repetitive and time consuming for both the operator and the regulator.

“ABCON is therefore using this opportunity to appeal to the CBN to take urgent steps to review the rate at which the dollar is sold to BDCs in order to boost ongoing recovery of the naira against dollar. Obviously, the BDC business has been badly affected by “uncompetitive rate as the CBN sells dollars to BDCs at higher rate compared to what it sells to commercial banks, yet both institutions target the same market segment and customers. The BDCs buy dollar from the International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) at N360/$1 and sell to end users at N361.5/$1 while the CBN sells to commercial banks at N357/$1 and the banks sell to end users at N360/$1,” he said. He urged the CBN to review BDC rate to align with that of the banks since both sectors serve the same customers.

The ABCON boss also want the apex bank to make BDC transactions Value Added Tax (VAT) and Commission on Turnover (COT) exempt and reduce BDCs licence renewal payments.

Politics / Nigeria’s Non-oil Sector Contributes 90.3% In Q1 GDP Growth by THEJOURNALIST: 6:12am On May 22, 2018
OIL’S contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) remains below 10 per cent in Q1 figures released yesterday by the National Bureau of Statistics(NBS) in Abuja.

According to the NBS, the nation’s GDP grew by 1.95 per cent year-on-year- in real terms in the first quarter of 2018.

Although the nation recorded some growth in the oil sector during the period, the contribution formed only 9.61 per cent of the total, with the non- oil sector accounting for the rest.

This is despite an increase in the daily oil production to an average of 2.0 million barrels per day (mbpd), higher than the 1.95 mbpd in the fourth quarter of 2017.

The report stated that real growth of the oil sector was 14.77 per cent (year-on-year) in first quarter of 2018. This represents an increase of 30.37 per cent points relative to the rate recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2017. Quarter-on-Quarter, the oil sector grew by 13.24 per cent in first quarter, 2018, the NBS said.

This is up from 8.53 per cent in the first quarter and 7.35 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2017.

In comparison, non-oil sector grew by 0.76 per cent in real terms.

This is higher by 0.04 per cent point compared to the rate recorded same quarter of 2017 and 0.70 per cent point lower than the fourth quarter of 2017.

The sector’s growth was driven mainly by agriculture (crop production), financial institutions and insurance, manufacturing, transportation and storage as well as information and communication.

In real terms, the non-oil sector contributed 90.39 per cent to the GDP, lower than 91.47 per cent recorded in the first quarter of 2017 and 92.65 per cent recorded in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Overall, GDP grew by 1.95% (year-on-year) in real terms in the first quarter of 2018.

The bureau stated that the figure shows a stronger growth, compared with the first quarter of 2017, which recorded a growth of –0.91 per cent, indicating an increase of 2.87 per cent points.

Compared to the preceding quarter, there was a decline of -0.16% points from 2.11%, NBS said.

Quarter on quarter, real GDP growth was -13.40% as oil production estimates for the third and fourth quarters of 2017 have been revised and oil GDP for those quarters have been adjusted.

According to NBS figures, aggregate GDP for the first quarter stood at N28.4 trillion in nominal terms.

”This performance is higher when compared to the first quarter of 2017 which recorded a nominal GDP aggregate of N26.028 trillion, thus -presenting a positive year- on-year nominal growth rate of 9.36%. This rate of growth is however lower relative to growth recorded in Q1 2017 by -7.70% points at 17.06% but higher than the proceeding quarter by 2.14% points at 7.22%.

Politics / Nigeria Concludes Agreement With UAE On Stolen Funds Recovery by THEJOURNALIST: 6:23am On May 14, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption drive moved a notch higher yesterday. Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s agreement on recovery of assets and cash stashed away in UAE by Nigerians takes off next month.

Besides, the collaboration among heads of anti-corruption agencies in Commonwealth (Africa) countries will be stepped up as Nigeria hosts the 8th annual general meeting and conference for heads of anti-corruption agencies in Commonwealth Africa from today in Abuja.

Buhari is expected to open the conference, with the theme: “Partnering towards assets recovery and return”.

Yesterday in Abu Dhabi, officials of the UAE and Nigeria exchanged instruments of ratification on judicial agreements signed between both governments in 2016.

With yesterday’s exchange of instruments, the agreement will now take effect from June 13.

According to WAM Emirates news agency, the UAE and Nigeria signed the agreement regarding the apprehension of criminals, extraditing convicted persons, providing mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, as well as for legal and judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters.

The ceremony for exchanging the instruments of ratification took place between Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Jarman, Assistant Minister for Human Rights and International Law at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Nigeria’s Ambassador to UAE Mohammed Dansanta Rimi, at the headquarters of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The UAE’s Director of the International Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Justice, Abdul Rahman Murad Al Balushi, witnessed the ceremony during which the June 13 take-off date was confirmed.

Nigeria on January 19, 2016, signed six agreements with the UAE following a state visit by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The pact includes Judicial Agreements on Extradition, Transfer of Sentenced Persons, Mutual Legal Assistance on Criminal Matters, and Mutual Legal Assistance on Criminal and Commercial Matters (the recovery and repatriation of stolen wealth).

The Federal Government had been collaborating with the UAE authorities on suspicious cash and assets allegedly owned by some Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs).

The agreements, which were signed by President Buhari are:

Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement.
Agreement on Trade Promotion and Protection
Judicial Agreements on Extradition
Transfer of Sentenced Persons
Mutual Legal Assistance on Criminal Matters
Mutual Legal Assistance on Criminal and Commercial Matters (recovery and repatriation of stolen wealth)
The Federal Government has been trying to attach some suspected assets allegedly owned by some Nigerians or traced to them in UAE.

The EFCC also has evidence of how some public office holders benefited from the London-Paris Club refund and how the cash was laundered in Dubai, UAE.

The financial intelligence sharing by the two countries has uncovered some cases involving ex-Minister of Petroleum Resources Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke and some of her business associates.

The assets allegedly identified with Diezani are marked as J5 Emirates Hills (30million Dirham) and E146 Emirates Hills valued at 44million Dirham.

Those allegedly traced to her assiociate Kola Aluko are: 4100 Le Reve Dubai Maria, Dubai; Unit 1402, PS 14th Floor located at Metro TECOM near Internet City Metro Station, Dubai; Unit 712, ES 7th Floor located at First Central, Off Sheikh Zayed, TECOM, Al-Barsha 3 Dubai and Unit 512, 5th Floor located at First Group Marina Hotels, Al-Seba Street, Plot 394-426, Dubai AE-AJ.

Sections 7 of 28 and 34 of the EFCC (Establishment Act) 2004 and Section 13(1) of the Federal High Court Act, 2004 mandate the agency to seize suspicious assets.

Section 7 says: “The commission has power to (a) cause any investigations to be conducted as to whether any person, corporate body or organization has committed any offence under this Act or other law relating to economic and financial crimes.

“(b) Cause investigations to be conducted into the properties of any person if it appears to the commission that the person’s lifestyle and extent of the properties are not justified by his source of income.”

Sections 28 and 34 of the EFCC (Establishment Act) 2004 and Section 13(1) of the Federal High Court Act, 2004 empower the anti-graft agency to invoke Interim Assets Forfeiture Clause.

“Section 28 of the EFCC Act reads: ‘Where a person is arrested for an offence under this Act, the Commission shall immediately trace and attach all the assets and properties of the person acquired as a result of such economic or financial crime and shall thereafter cause to be obtained an interim attachment order from the Court.’

Section 13 of the Federal High Court Act reads in part: “The Court may grant an injunction or appoint a receiver by an interlocutory order in all cases in which it appears to the Court to be just or convenient so to do.

(2) Any such order may be made either unconditionally or on such terms and conditions as the Court thinks just.”

Jobs/Vacancies / Busted: Tellers Welfare - The True Story In Access Bank! by THEJOURNALIST: 5:39am On Sep 25, 2013
This is a mail sent to access bank management by a Teller, few minutes later he was fired:

Good day Management, Good day my fellow Tellers

Having sat down and pondered for a while about some trivial issues concerning tellers in this bank, I decide to break the silence, damn the consequence and speak out to save other people that are suffering and smiling. Away from the stories and now to the crux of the matter.

On the 14 April 2008, I got an employment as A TRANSACTION OFFICER with a Bank called INTERCONTINENTAL BANK PLC (IBplc). I was happy just like every other person because I saw a promising future. Time went on, policies and programmes of  government and monetary agencies unfolded, the bank was later taken over by another bank called ACCESS BANK.  This process brought a lot of tension among staff of IBPLC that led to more than half of the total staff of IBplc resigning their appointment as a result of the threats posed by Access Bank management.
Finally, the process of integration was concluded and then……..  Things began to happen,

First, I discovered that as a support staff in Access bank, there won’t be any form of growth either in salary or promotion to become a core staff as it were in IBPLC.

Secondly, that you could be ask to leave the Job at any slightest provocation or  human error without considering your previous efforts or your outstanding performance or even the numbers of years you have put into the Job.

Thirdly, the bank do not take responsibilities  in terms of fatal injury or death as you will be refer to your employer in the case of any negative eventuality. This is unacceptable and negates world’s best practice.

As a human being, I take comments to be mere rumors till I have verified them, because during upbringing, my lovely parent taught me this philosophy to apply in every circumstances, the philosophy is simple, they are:  (1) SEE (2) JUDGE (3) AND ACT. This philosophy is the motto of the Young Catholic Student (YCS) back then in my early schools days.

Finally, I began to see things for myself in this working arena called ACCESS BANK. My first ugly encounter was during the cut over periods. I saw what I never bargained for. I don’t know of branches in other regions, but here in Abuja, it wasn’t funny, we resumed work by 7.AM  and do not leave until 2.00am (midnight) this continued for weeks all in the bid to avert all the lapses caused by the process of integration.
In the normal IBPLC, compensation would have come in at least for taking risk to work till that horrible hour of the day. But to my surprise, there was no comment from any quarters, not even to show appreciation. Yes! You heard me right, there was no appreciation because going by the terms of my employment, I was to leave the office not later than the stipulated time of 6pm. We even had to come on Saturdays and Sundays to work, yet, no lunch, no allowance, no appreciation nothing.

In the course of this suffering, a meeting was schedule for all IBPLC tellers here in Abuja, the aim of the meeting was to intimate us how we will be used In all the units of the bank e.g Funds transfer Desk, customer service, etc as against our sole responsibility which was cash management. We all thought our token salary will be increase along side, instead it was reduce as the cash hazard allowance and monthly feeding allow was stopped. This meeting brought sadness to the entire IBPLC tellers  because tragedy strucked. Four of our colleagues were coming from Gwagwalada branch ,all of them in the same vehicle had a fatal accident. We lost two and two others survived with various degree of injuries and were unconscious for days.
I was the first person the hospital called to inform of the accident, I quickly informed the ‘’REGIONAL OGAS’’ who were anchoring the meeting that made these fellows leave their homes to their untimely death, finally we all got to the hospital premises, in fact the mortuary to be precise, we confirmed the death of BUKOLA AREMU AND KINGSLEY EMEZIE, while the two others Ozeigbe and Ayo were still alive. To confirm the earlier rumor I heard, the ‘ogas’ started making calls, it was later I realized that call was for immediate replacement as all the four branch tellers were all involved in the accident. As a student of Public Admin, I know it was right to quickly look for replacement. The big question is, what about the souls (dead and alive)? All that was done was to contact the company that outsourced the staff, there was no follow up whatsoever on the side of the bank who these people labored for, the matter died down, Bukky was buried on the fourth day while Kingsley was buried two weeks later. None, I mean none of Access bank staff was there to witness this. Of course some of the branch staff were there because of the close relationship they had with their late colleagues.
Bukky and Kingsley, you both died a Hero and a Heroine, even if you were not recognized, you live on in our hearts. I say may your souls rest in peace. (Amen)

Coming back to other issues, I will be summarizing them for easy and better understanding.

Access bank is known to have a general belief of ‘empowering employees’. Now I ask, how have the tellers been empowered?
-. Is it by paying the ‘’professional staff’’ benefits and a penny is not accrued to tellers?
-. Is it by paying professional staff medical allowance while the tellers who suffer the same risk or even more with them are left at the mercy of their so called employers?
-. Is it by promoting professional staff and leaving a teller to be stagnant? In management science, stagnation is the worst form of demoralization.
-. Our female tellers are not allowed the full benefits of a nursing mother, they get half pay during their period of maternity, and are not entitled to nursing mother’s right after the completion of the three month half paid period. If I may ask, is there any difference between a female professional staff and a female support staff? Why should a fellow human be wicked to his brother and sister? Too many questions begging for answers.

If Access Bank wants me to believe they empower their employee’s then they should revisit some of the aforementioned cases.

Despite all these maltreatment, do you still expect the tellers to put in their best? Against all odds, even after putting your best into the job, the almighty  ‘’professional staff’’ takes the glory. (e.g) a branch that had 5 stars in Abuja, the core staff in the branch were paid huge sums while the ‘’robot ‘’security men and tellers who were outstanding in attending to the MS were left with nothing.
Access Bank wants to be the world most respected African Bank, how will this be achieved if there is unethical discrimination among the people working in the same organization?

Now funds are being lavished on rebranding, I ask this question what is the essence of rebranding if the staff welfare is not a priority to the Bank? I was able to speak to a teller who have spend six year with Access Bank, and I could feel the pains right from his heart, he made me understand that the case was worse even before Access acquired Intercontinental Bank .What is the importance of flashy ambience if the core element (frontline staff) of the bank is unspeakable. My Grandfather had this proverb “You will be wasting your time if you are looking for clean teeth in a rotten mouth”. You can’t give what you don’t have, why should a teller be happy in his work environment when he is not happy with the job. One may see them laughing but is never from their mind – plastic smile.   We try to express all this maltreatment, however, when we mention it, the next thing they say is ‘resign if you are tired of the Job’’  the fact that there are no jobs in Nigeria does not mean those who get a partial employment should be retrogressing instead of improvement in their well being. (this is a typical experience of an Access Bank Teller.) especially those who resides where cost of leaving is alarming. E.G Abuja P/H and other cities.

FACT YOU SHOULD RATHER CONSIDER:
1.    HND is never a disease and will not make someone like me feel like a second class citizen. So whatever a Bsc holder can do in Access Bank, an HND holder will also do and even do it better, is the brain and ability that matters and not the empty certificate.
2.    When there is no motivation at work place, it demoralizes the people especially at the grass root level.
3.    There should be upward and downward flow of communication to know the feelings of your staff who interface the customers.
4.    Adequate and enough leave days be granted to staff so they can rest. In the days of IBPLC, it was difficult to differentiate between core staff and a support staff, leave days was 20 days for all. Please note, then, professional and non professional does not come to play. Is either a You’re a core staff or  a support staff and is not obvious for the world to know who is who. Customers sees us all as IBPLC employees. So  let’s correct this notion of professional or non professional thing. An illiterate can be a professional while an educated illiterate a non professional, go to a country like China, you will understand.
5.    There should be an avenue where you serve as a support for years and you are elevated to become a core staff too, whoever you employ no matter the pay, will know that he or she is working for something and will put in his or her best to merit that position. But If there is nothing to lose, what do you expect?
6.    Even tellers employed with National Diploma should be encouraged in terms of payment review even if there won’t be promotion ,for example in GTB a teller’s salary is increased with N10,000 yearly until the 3rd or 4th  year, but reverse is the case in Access bank.
7.    Appreciate your employees. Whether a core staff or a support staff. It gives people that sense of belonging.
8.    If you must celebrate any employee, then it is better to celebrate who ever deserves to be celebrated, I watch carefully when cakes are being baked for core staff on their birthdays, I laugh over it because it seems support staff don’t celebrate birthdays. Or perhaps they were all given birth to on a day that never exist.maybe on the 32nd of December 19xxxxxx, this is the worst form of discrimination. Is better not to do it at all than to do for some and make them feel too important.
9.    Pay allowances to all employees that are exposed to the same hazard and risk irrespective of their mode of employment. Why paying medical allowance to core staff and neglecting support staff, or are tellers robot made by scientist that they don’t need to take care of themselves?  The only thing being shared equally at the branch level in Access Bank is the yearly December Rice, please it should not just be only rice that you share using that kind of formula extend it to other aspect. (How am I sure it will even continue this year?)
10. If you don’t show empathy to the people that are working for you, how will they show sincere empathy to customers? In Abuja, house rent is very expensive, you earn N50,000 per month and pay rent of not less than 20,000 per month. Pay monthly Transport of not less than N15,000, and feed with not less than N10,000. How will the tellers and other support staff grow with this token? Where is the empathy on the part of our management? All these little things make support staff to always maintain CV and they leave  at any time after they feel the embarrassment and harassment is too much for them to bear.
11. Today, the bank is aiming and preaching customer retention, but have the management bother to retain any of this tellers who put in their best?  Any result driven organization is suppose to develop her employees and retain them. This can simply be refer to as moral obligation.
12. Management is made up of people with heart, In other words, empathy can be shown. The management can also decide not to take this issues serious, one thing we must know as religious people, when God gives you wealth, money authority and power to lead and you use it to punish or maltreat people under you, that same God knows how to take it away from you and judge you after your earthly deeds. Like the bible will have it, it is easier for a camels head to pass through a niddle than for a reach man to enter into the kingdom of GOD. This does not mean rich men cant enter heaven, it all depend on how you use your wealth on people who do not have what you have got.
13. Finally, to my dear fellow tellers, the difference between where we are now and where we all want to be is ‘’TIME AND OPPORTUNITY’’ do not hesitate to act fast when the time comes. In other words, stay if you want to stay, walk if you need to walk and run if it become necessary for you to do so. GOD BLESS US ALL.  And for the bank, if you must be the best as you desire, start with the staff (tellers and support staff)  who are victims of this inequality.

Just to mention a few, there are so many injustice we see on a daily basis, but I cannot put everything down in writing  to express my displeasure and say all I intend to say. If Mandela never summoned courage, South Africa would not have been what it is today particularly to the black citizens.

I must also add that nobody should be held liable for this act of mine if its view to be negative, I should be held liable as it’s a plan I conceived and decided to send to top management to know if they are aware of all these challenges.

WARNING: No teller is expected to reply in any negative way, if you must comment, let it be  genuine and no insult. But I will rather advice you do not reply so I don’t rub you into any issues. I have consider the good, the bad and the ugly expectation that may arise from this write up, do not join me if you don’t have the mind and the will to do so. “He that is down fears no fall at all”.

IRIS VS Athena: Which Came Out On Top?
Posted by Eunice

Action dramas IRIS and its spin-off Athena have
been compared by many, so I’ve decided to also
write up a post that compares the two to each
other. I’ll be using the criteria that I wrote about in
the “ Important Factors of a Good Drama” post
that I published a while ago. In the end of this
comparison post, you can decide which drama
trumps the other one. [SPOILERS INCLUDED!!]

1. Genre
Both IRIS and Athena are action-packed dramas
that also include love stories so I can’t compare
the two dramas in the ‘genre’ aspect.

2. Plot
Plot is a little bit different than genre. The plots of
IRIS and Athena are both quite different but also
similar due to their genres. In my opinion, both of
the plots are very strong in their own unique
ways. You can read my explanation of the plots
below.

IRIS starts off with two men (Kim Hyunjoon and
Jung Joonho) who as close as brothers. They enter
the security agency NIS together. Both fall in love
with the same woman, but only one gets her. The
sweet pair of lovers (consisting of Kim Hyunjoon
and Choi Seunghee) go off to Japan and blissful
scenes of their blooming love are shown. Later in
the drama, various events happen, causing Kim
Hyunjoon to believe that Choi Seunghee is dead;
Choi Seunghee thinks the same of Kim HyunJoon.
So then the lovers are separated. During the
separation, we have the addition of another
character – Kim Sunhwa, who is an agent from
North Korea. Kim Hyunjoon captures her when she
was sent on a mission to catch him and he spares
her life. She falls in love with him but he’s still
thinking about Choi Seunghee. Later in the drama,
much to their disbelief, Kim Hyunjoon and Choi
Seunghee see each other again. Sadly, Kim
Hyunjoon is believed to be on the ‘evil’ side when
in reality, he’s still on the good side. Jung Joonho
instead turns and becomes evil while everyone
else thinks that he’s good. The brothers become
enemies. I found this drama sad because it’s not
just about love between a man and a woman, but
between to guys who were best friends. They
trusted each other, talked to each other, played
with each other. But in the end, their relationship
ended up being broken – the trust was broken, the
friendship broken..I found it truly sad.
Athena opens up with an action scene of Son Hyuk
and Yoon Hyein beating some guys up, each in
separate locations, but working together. It leads
you to initially think that these two are the good
guys beating up the bad guys, but we later find
out that it’s actually the opposite. Which is quite
interesting since the good guys were the
protagonists in IRIS and here in Athena, the
protagonists consist of good and bad. Fast forward
a few years from the first scene, and Son Hyuk
returns to Korea from another country. Yoon Hyein
lived a quiet life for the past few years, working as
a museum guide. Lee Jungwoo meets Yoon Hyein
at an amusement park and falls for her right
away. However, she does not share these feelings.
After this encounter, Lee Jungwoo tries to get
close to Yoon Hyein, but she keeps distancing
herself from him. In Italy, on a mission for NTS
(the anti-terrorist organization, like the NIS of
IRIS), Lee Jungwoo sees Yoon Hyein and sees that
she’s actually not the soft museum guide he
thought. He thinks that she’s a black agent that
came to help out in the mission. Back in Korea,
Yoon Hyein joins NTS when in reality, she’s in
Athena. She becomes a spy for Son Hyuk, who
saved her from a fire when she was young.
Throughout the course of the drama, however,
Yoon Hyein falls in love with Lee Jungwoo and she
turns from bad to good. Oh yes, and also, can’t
forget about Jaehee, who also works at NTS. She
was Lee Jungwoo’s old girlfriend and she still
harbors some feelings for him. But don’t worry,
she’s not the evil girl that you’ll hate.

3. Length of drama
IRIS was 20 episodes long, and the same goes for
Athena, so I can’t compare the two in this
category.

4. Ratings
IRIS started off with a 25% rating and maintained
a strong lead at a pretty consistent 30% rating
throughout the entire drama.
Athena also started off well with a 25% rating and
high expectations brought upon from the success
of IRIS. However, unlike IRIS, Athena was unable
to maintain its lead and started falling behind as
its ratings became lower and lower every week.
However, it kept its two digit ratings, which is
actually pretty good, but just a bit disappointing
since it didn’t get all the love that IRIS got. Quite
sad indeed. I guess that we could credit this to the
high expectations that everyone had for this spin-
off.

5. Reviews
Most people say that they like IRIS more than
Athena, but then there are some that find Athena
better than IRIS. What can I say? Reviews are
written by people who are not always very
objective (including myself). I’ve read both sides
of the argument, and I can’t really comment about
both, but so far, I’ve seen more reviews rooting for
IRIS.

6. Main cast
The main cast of IRIS is very VERY good – Lee
Byunghun AND Kim Taehee in one drama?! Plus,
they’re the main leads. In addition, Kim SoYeon,
another pretty reputable actress, is in this drama
as one of the main four. Another actor (errr…not
really) in this drama that added to its popularity is
TOP from popular Kpop group Big Bang. No
wonder IRIS received so much publicity before it
even started airing! And yes, I started watching
because of the cast. It really does matter.
The main cast of Athena is not as popular – well,
at least for me. I didn’t know any of the actors or
actresses in Athena except for Siwon, and I
wouldn’t even consider him 100% actor material.
Jung Woosung makes his return to the small
screen for the first time in 14 years. I never heard
of Cha Seungwon until I started watching Athena.
He has actually been in many movies and dramas,
but I just didn’t watch the ones that he acted in.
As for the actresses, I saw SooAe in 9 End 2 Outs
but that drama didn’t leave a lasting impression
on me much. The other actress that makes up the
main cast of Athena is Lee JiAh, also a new face for
me. However, my sister saw her in Beethoven’s
Virus.

7. The first few episodes
Hooked me. Both dramas managed to hook me.
What hooked me? The blooming love story
between the leads did. In both IRIS and Athena,
the lead couples were too cute. The chemistry was
also very visible and kept me going (heheh).
As for the action, both dramas delivered well.
There was nonstop action, the evil guys were all
over the place – loved it. I don’t watch that many
action-packed dramas since there aren’t that
many in existence, but I enjoy watching American
movies that have lots of action in them. Also, IRIS
and Athena both came out when I needed a nice
change from the normal romantic comedy or
melodramatic drama.

Another highlight in both of these dramas was all
the places that the staff actually went to in order
to shoot. They went to Europe and Japan in IRIS
and Athena. I loved the scenery – it was so
beautiful to watch along with the action.
8. Beginning, Middle, and End
I felt that Athena was very much like IRIS (no
surprise there). I already commented on the
beginning of both of these dramas.

For me, IRIS wasn’t draggy at all. Probably
because it’s the first action drama I saw and so
much happened, keeping me on my toes at all
times. The relationships intertwined in IRIS as well
as all the action, the plot, everything – it broke my
heart but mended it again. After each episode, I
wanted more. And since it was so hard to find this
drama in subtitles, so it became really rewarding
when I finally found episode all subbed so that I
could watch it. If you find our past posts on this
site, I always made posts about a new episode of
IRIS being subbed.

As for the end of IRIS, it was pretty horrible – the
main guy DIES. We finally have our main leads
reunited and happy, but as Kim HyunJoon drives
to Choi Seunghee with a ring in his hand, he gets
shot. And then the drama ends. I was very
unhappy with this ending. I know that this is an
action drama and all, but still, it should end
happily.

Now for Athena – in the middle of the drama, I felt
that although there was lots of action and many
events happening, it was starting to get draggy
and repetitive. I wanted to see more development
in the relationships between characters and the
revelations of the truth in everything. Luckily, this
drama started to redeem itself. People started
changing and the plot started to improve.
I was dreading the end of Athena to come about
as I didn’t want it to be another disappointing,
horrible, sad ending like IRIS‘. Luckily, it wasn’t.
The bad guys are all gone and the end was
peaceful. Although I did hope for a bit more, I am
still satisfied with this drama’s ending. I mean
hey, at least it didn’t end like IRIS did.
Which drama do YOU think was better?
Maybe not just based off of my personal
evaluation, but yours. Especially for those of
you who saw both dramas, which one stuck
to YOU more? Comment below!

Politics / Why Atiku Should Be The Next President, By Youth Leader by THEJOURNALIST: 3:01pm On Sep 08, 2013
Why Atiku Should Be the Next President, By
Youth Leader
Alhaji Aminu Yuguda Gusau is coordinator of Youth
Coalition for Turaki 2015, North-west zone, and
publicity secretary of Gusau Progressive League.
Gusau tells Vincent Obia why former Vice President
Atiku Abubakar should be the next president of
Nigeria. Excerpts:
Why did you form the Youth Coalition for Turaki
2015?
Coalition for Turaki 2015 is to mobilise support from
citizens of this country, particularly, the youth, to
ensure that Turakin Adamawa is elected president in
2015. We are struggling and we will by God’s grace
reach the target, first of all, to ensure he scales
through the PDP presidential primaries, and then the
general election.
On why Atiku should become president in 2015, as I
am talking to you now I have never met with Turaki
one-on-one. But I have interest in him based on some
reasons, particularly, his patriotic nature and
leadership quality. I read him before now and
because of what I saw in him, I believe that if given
the chance in the next election, he will be a leader
who can deliver abundant dividends to the people of
this nation.
What makes you believe that Atiku can solve the
problems of this country?
I believe he is somebody who has studied the
problems of this country, and I believe he has the
interest of Nigerians at heart. As a matter of fact, he
has the sympathy of many Nigerians. Atiku is
prudent and has self-control.
What are some of the leadership qualities you can
ascribe to Atiku?
Justice, because when there is justice everything
would go smoothly in leadership. Again, any leader
who doesn’t have justice at heart would definitely
have problems in his leadership. So, Turakin
Adamawa is somebody who has always fought for
justice all his life. This is in addition to his wide
acceptance and among meaning Nigerians. He is also
somebody full of patriotism; he loves his country and
always wants to see it developed, socially and
economically. Turaki, if given a chance, would take
this country to the Promised Land.
Do you think the All Progressives Congress would be
a big threat to PDP in 2015?
The registration of APC is a welcome development
and healthy for the nation’s democracy. However,
PDP still retains its preeminent position and also
continues to enjoy the widest popularity and
acceptance among Nigerians across the country. In
fact, this is very healthy for our democracy and we
hope that from now the opposition will eschew all
forms of bitterness and desperation and desist from
politics of propaganda, which characterised their
former parties.
But do you think Atiku still commands respect in PDP
after leaving the party for Action Congress and
coming back?
To me, Turaki had left because of some unfortunate
things that were happening in PDP then and he
believed it would not be good for the country’s
democracy. For him to dump the political party he
helped to form, I think, was to correct some things in
the country’s democracy, which has really succeeded
in doing. He floated AC as political party and it has
brought positive change in Nigeria’s democracy.
Atiku later left AC and returned to PDP because it is
the only political party that has a seed that was
planted since it was floated in 1998 and that seed, no
one is capable of harvesting, except Atiku. That was
why he returned home. Atiku has planted important
things in PDP that would benefit Nigerians and that
seed has germinated and is almost ripe for harvest.
The seed I mean is the presidency and the time for
that seat is around the corner and Insha Allah he is
going to be on that seat come 2015.
What are some of the issues you think leaders of the
country must urgently tackle?
I have talked of justice. Then the problem of
insecurity, which I believe is one of results of
unemployment. Corruption is another issue of
concern which I believe must be looked into. Welfare
of the people and the development of the state
resources. Another area of importance is respect for
all citizens, irrespective of party differences.
How would you rate Atiku’s performance as a vice
president?
His contribution to the growth of democracy in this
country cannot be forgotten. While he was vice
president, he ensured that the principles of
democracy were respected. Atiku is somebody who
respects others irrespective of party differences. His
stand for unity, transparency and a sense of
belonging for all Nigerians is what is really behind his
wide acceptance by Nigerians.

ABUJA- CRISIS rocking the Anambra State chapter of
the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP , Saturday, took
another dimension as supporters of the Chairman,
Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC, Senator Andy Uba, his brother
and a chieftain of the party, Chief Chris Uba and
those of the party’s candidate, Tony Nwoye, engaged
in a free-for-all.
The Eagle square, venue of the convention was
literarily turned into a boxing arena as Anambra
delegates threw away decorum and engaged in
fisticuffs before delegates from other states.
Vanguard gathered that the Ubas, the Minister of
Aviation, Stella Oduah, and other delegates were
seated at the Anambra State pavilion when Tony
Nwoye came in at 11.15am with his supporters,
which added fillip to the already charged
atmosphere. In a twinkle of an eye, a fracas ensued
between supporters of the two governorship
candidates that emerged from separate congresses
in the state last week. The fight lasted for over thirty
minutes as the Aviation Minister stormed out of the
pavilion with her aides.

PDP: Court stops suspension of Andy Uba, others
2013-08-31 00:53:37
An Abuja Federal High Court on Friday stopped the suspension of Sen. Andy Uba, his brother Chris and three others by the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The PDP NWC had on Thursday suspended the Uba brothers, as well as Chief Benji Udeozor, Ejike Oguebego, and Mrs. Tonia Nwankwu for conducting a parallel state congress for the nomination of a governorship candidate in Anambra State.

Andy Uba, who is seeking election as governor of the state in the November 16, 2013 poll, emerged the party's candidate in the controversial congress.

They were suspended through a letter signed by the party's Acting National Secretary, Dr. Charles Akintoye.

However, Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Abuja FHC on Friday granted an interim order "suspending the suspension" pending the hearing and determination of a motion in which the five PDP members challenged disciplinary actions taken against them by the party.

PDP and the Inspector General of Police were listed as defendants in the suit.

The Uba brothers and the three others had on Thursday approached the Abuja FHC with an ex parte motion, asking the court to stop PDP from suspending them, but Justice Mohammed directed that the party must first come before him on Friday to explain why the prayers sought by the plaintiffs should not be granted.

At the resumption of hearing in the matter on Friday, PDP counsel, Clems Ezika, said the order directing the party to appear before the court to show cause was not served on the party.

Instead, he said the party was only served with the motion ex parte, the affidavit in support of the motion ex parte, written addresses and exhibits.

Ezika, as a result, asked the court to give him three days, in line with the rules of the court, to reply to the motion and thereby show why the court should not grant it.

Counsel to the plaintiffs, Abe Taiwo, opposed PDP's application for an adjournment, and insisted that the order to appear before the court to show cause why the ex parte motion should not be granted was served on the party.

At the behest of Justice Mohammed, a court clerk perused the court records and it was discovered that, indeed, the order directing PDP to appear before the court to show cause was served on the party at its national secretariat on Thursday.

Having failed to appear before the court on Friday to explain why the motion filed by the Uba brothers and their colleagues should not be granted as ordered, Justice Mohammed therefore granted the ex parte motion and stopped the suspension of the plaintiffs.

As a result, he gave "an order of interim injunction restraining the defendants/respondents (PDP, IG) by themselves or their agents, privies, servants, national officers, disciplinary committee or whatsoever from enforcing or carrying into effect, acting upon or giving effect, or doing anything whatsoever pursuant to the suspension letter issued and signed on all the plaintiffs/applicants by the Acting National Secretary of the 1st defendant/respondent dated 29 August, 2013, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice dated 28 day of August 2013."

In the same vein, the judge also made an order of interim injunction "restraining the disciplinary committee constituted by the PDP to try the plaintiffs from proceeding to take any action that may jeopardise the plaintiffs' membership status at the PDP, pending the hearing and determination of the motion."

Earlier, while urging the court to grant the ex parte motion, counsel to the plaintiffs, Taiwo, had informed the court that PDP tricked his clients into coming to the party's national secretariat to collect the suspension letters.

According to him, the acting national secretary invited them to a "purported settlement meeting" at the party's national secretariat, only to shock and embarrass them on their arrival by issuing them with copies of the suspension letter.

Taiwo said the acting national secretary took the action immediately the party was served with the order directing it to appear before the court to explain why the plaintiffs motion should not be granted.

But PDP lawyer, Ezika, described the alleged plot to expel the plaintiffs as "speculatory". Justice Mohammed fixed September 5, 2013 for hearing of the plaintiffs' motion.

ANAMBRA 2013: Another Port-Harcourt court

…as PDP suspends Senator Uba, Chief Chris Uba and
associates *I cannot be suspended — Chris…
A FEDERAL High Court has ordered the Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, to abide by results of the
ward and state congresses supervised by the
national secretariat of the party in the selection of its
governorship candidate. The ward and state
congresses eventually produced Comrade Tony
Nwoye as the party’s flag bearer.
The court order is contrary to another interim order
obtained earlier this week by the Ejike Oguebego
faction of the party compelling the party and the
Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to
accept Senator Andy Uba as the party’s flag bearer.
Both orders were issued by different justices of the
Federal High Court, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
Meanwhile, the PDP in a sharp
reaction to the increasingly murky
legal developments, yesterday,
suspended Senator Andy Uba and
his junior brother, Chief Chris Uba,
from the party. Also suspended
were some of the leading
associates of the Ubas, among
whom were Chief Oguebego,
chairman of the Chris Uba led faction, Mr. Benjamin
Udeozor, a former chairman of the same faction, and
Mrs Anthonia Nwankwu, the Southeast zonal woman
leader of the party.
The suspension it was learnt is preceding a plan to
expel the five from the party. But in swift reactions,
Senator Andy Uba told Vanguard on telephone that
he was ignorant of the action while his junior brother,
Chris asserted that the party cannot suspend him on
the fact that he is presently in court.
The court order on the PDP and INEC obtained by Mr.
Paul Azebo and Christopher Obijofor, purportedly
delegates from the ward congresses orgnaised by the
national secretariat, was got on August 16, ahead of
the PDP governorship primaries conducted last
Saturday.
The plaintiffs who brought the national chairman of
the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, the PDP and INEC
as defendants prayed the court to compel the
defendants to uphold the candidature of whosoever
emerged from the governorship primaries supervised
by the national secretariat as the candidate of the
party.
In the order given by Justice S. A. Aliyu it was ruled
that:
*An Order of interim injunction is hereby made
restraining the 1st and 2nd Defendants from
adopting, nominating, selecting, holding out,
submitting or in whatever manner presenting to the
3rd Defendant any person as candidate of the POP for
the Anambra State Governorship election fixed for
November 2013 or any other date, except the person
that emerged from the POP State Congress/
gubernatorial primary election in which the Plaintiffs
and other elected ward delegates of the 1st
Defendant participated in, having been elected so to
do, pending the determination of .the Motion on
Notice,
*An Order of interim injunction is hereby made
restraining the 3rd Defendant from accepting any
nomination or recognizing or howsoever dealing with
any person as the governorship candidate of the PDP
for the forth coming Governorship election in
Anambra State, other than the person elected from
the State Congress/gubernatorial primary election of
the 1st Defendant conducted by the panel set up by
the National Working Committee of PDP for the
purpose of the said Gubernatorial primary election
scheduled to hold on August 24, 2013 or any other
date with the list bearing the name of the Plaintiffs
and other Ward Delegates that emerged from the
ward Congress held on August 12, 2013, pending the
determination of the Motion on Notice.”
R-L Sen Andy Uba and Chris Uba
Oguebego faction
Justice H. A. Nganjiwa of the Federal High Court, Port
Harcourt is, today, expected to hear the two sides in
the case instituted by the Oguebego faction seeking
to compel the PDP to present Senator Uba as the
party’s governorship candidate.
Meanwhile, the PDP, yesterday, suspended the two
Uba brothers, Oguebego, Uduezor and Nwankwu
from the party.
The party in a letter signed by the Acting National
Secretary, Dr. Charles Aderemi Akitoye, based the
suspensions on the failure of the five to appear
before the NWC as directed over the allegation that
they conducted parallel congresses of the party
against party regulations.
The letter which was addressed individually to them
and dated August 29, read: “the National Working
Committee, NWC at its 353rd meeting held on
Wednesday, August 28, 2013 reviewed the
happenings in Anambra PDP regarding the Anambra
Primary Election.
“It was noted that you organized a parallel state
congress which was unauthorised by the party
contrary to section 58 (1) a, b, c, f, h and j of the PDP
constitution (2012 as amended). As a result of this,
you were invited to meet with the NWC on
Wednesday, August 28, 2013 for fair hearing, but
you did not appear.
“In view of the seriousness of the issues involved,
you are hereby suspended from the party and the
case referred to the appropriate Disciplinary
Committee for further necessary action”.
Reacting to the development, Chief Chris Uba in a
session with newsmen last night said: “I came to
Abuja on Wednesday evening from Enugu and I was
given a letter from the PDP, and as soon as I read the
letter, I knew where they were going to. I did not do
the congress and I was not a party chairman in the
state.
“So, I rushed to court yesterday (Wednesday) and
the court asked us to come on Friday. I was surprised
to hear that I have been suspended. I want us to
respect democracy and the rule of law. We must
protect the rule of law and the judiciary.
“Why the rush in suspending me and the five others?
There were more than a million PDP members at the
congress. They should have suspended all of us.”

Jobs/Vacancies / Employment - Contract Job Is Modern Day Slavery -salako by THEJOURNALIST: 5:28am On Aug 29, 2013
Comrade Sunday Salako, President of the Association
of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial
Institutions (ASSBIFI), and first Deputy President,
Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) sees
outsourcing and casualisation of jobs and services as
satanic influences and means of enslaving Nigerians
by employers of labour in the country. Salako in this
interview with Senior Correspondent, Sylvester
Enoghase , urged the Federal Government to
sanction companies that engage in such practices,
while urging government to revamp the agro sector
which has the potentials to create massive
employment for our teeming population. Excerpt

Assess the current reforms in the banking
sector so far?

I will look at it from two perspectives. Yes, if you are
looking at it generally, like a stakeholder in the
industry or a Nigerian, I would say that the reform
has been good. It’s a welcome development because
it has been able to instill discipline and sanity into
our system. The recklessness of the past is no longer
prevailing now.
But on the other hand as a labour activist, it has
come at a very high cost. And any reform that is
geared towards cutting jobs is not a good reform, no
matter how good the intention is. Yes, because you
are solving one problem to cause another
monumental problem elsewhere. Look at the social
implication; you take away peoples’ jobs and there is
a problem on the social template. That is why you
see rising wave of crime everywhere. As I said before,
the reform has come at a great cost and has the
ability to impact negatively on the nation’s polity.

How has outsourcing and casualisation
affected the banking industry?

Outsourcing and casualisation are satanic influences.
They are like ill winds that blow us no good. I have
always said it… They are alien to this country.
Anybody that encourages casualisation and
outsourcing in Africa is satanic. The person should be
examined, because in Africa, for instance, for every
man that works, there are 10 or 12 or thereabout to
feed. It (casualisation) can work in Europe, because
of the type of life they live-it is me and my
immediate family, nobody else. You do not have
extended families. You can even decide not to greet
your brother.
But here in Africa, because of our communal way of
living, for every one that works, no fewer than 10
persons feed from one person.
So, if you casualise people and do it the way we do it
here, it is satanic. Here, you have two people working
in an environment; they have gone to the same
school probably, they have the same qualification,
and so on because he/she is a permanent staff and
the other unfortunate to be a casual staff, the
disparity in their salary is so wide. That is bad.

Are you saying that the gap cannot be
bridged?

Yes, the gap in salary disparity between the
permanent staff and casual is too wide to be
bridged. If, for instance, your company as a
newspaper company, decide to engage me and my
job is not part of your core operations, then you can
ask somebody to supply me to you. But you must
pay me or you ensure that man pays me what you
also pay your permanent staff. It is then that you can
say casualisation is okay. But casualization that is
enslaving people today is not a good omen for us.
China Civil Engineering and Construction
Company (CCECC) reportedly employs 20,000
Nigerian workers, 35 of who are senior staff,
and 1000 Chinese expatriates from China.
What is your take on this?
There is a saying that the person that pays the piper
dictates the tune. You are aware that China recently
gave Nigeria grants and when country brings such
grants, the Government determines what to use the
money for. And they bring in companies of China
origin which will execute those projects.
In effect, they are not giving you anything. So, if
CCECC recruits 20, 000 and only 35 of them are
senior staff, they are even very benevolent. The
people, who brought them here, never cared whether
they enslave us.
You can go to Ogba industrial estate in Ikeja, and see
what goes on there, they lock up our youths from
6am to 6pm; no food, no water. They work for 13
hours every day and they are paid between N7000
and N10, 000 every month; people who should be
engaged in productive activities to galvanize our
economy.
It is unfortunate that government allows these
foreign companies to enslave our youths. They create
slave camps and those who are supposed to regulate
their activities are looking elsewhere because they
are the ones fronting for those companies that abuse
our laws. If you have a government that is reckless
or lacks the political will to enforce its own laws, then
you have this kind of problem.

What can be done to change the mono-product
nature of the Nigerian economy?

We have said it over and over, that Nigerians are not
lazy. Before the advent of oil, Nigeria had a highly
successful agro-based economy. There were cocoa
plantations of the defunct Western Nigeria, the oil
palm plantations of the East and the famous
groundnut pyramids of Kano, including rubber. They
all typified agricultural sufficiency as well as a fruitful
nation In fact, those entire landmarks one can point
at; namely, the Cocoa House, and WNTV (Western
Nigerian Television, which is) the first television
station in Africa, among others, were built or
established from the proceeds of cocoa and kola
nuts.
As the years rolled by, Nigeria began to move away
from farming and depended on petroleum products
as our major foreign exchange earner and very little
attention was paid to the agricultural sector. It began
to dwindle. The groundnut pyramids collapsed, just
as the cocoa and oil palm plantations vanished or
rather dropped significantly to a subsistent level.
We must go back to the basics. Agriculture is the
only way. But we must invest massively in
infrastructure. Power supply must be steady. The
roads must be rehabilitated and then leave Nigerians
to perform the magic. We do it elsewhere. Go to other
countries and see what Nigerians are doing. The
environment here is simply not conducive.
Government should concentrate on two things alone
and see how this economy will develop.
Government must revamp the agro sector which has
the potentials to create massive employment for our
teeming population. It is gratifying to note that
successive government over the years had made
funding for agro allied investments easier to access,
with extension services provided to farmers at highly
subsidized rates to ensure heavy yields at harvest
time. Agric banks are set up, to make loans available
to farmers, just as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides
and planting technologies are provided at subsidized
rates by the government.

As a labour leader, what is your advice for the
nation’s unemployed youths?

My advice to young Nigerians is to return to farming,
rather than roaming the cities looking for white collar
jobs that are not there in the first place.

Politics / N1.5B Wedding Bash! Wastefullness in govt! by THEJOURNALIST: 4:12pm On Aug 24, 2013

REACTIONS have continued to trail the wedding
bash of Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-
Makura’s son in the united states U.S. where the
governor allegedly spent N1.5 billion on the
occasion.
Official activities in the state were also brought to a
standstill throughout the week following the absence
of top government functionaries from their offices as
they were said to have flown abroad for the wedding.
While the state government has repeatedly denied
the allegations of the whooping sum allegedly used
for the occasion, sources have continued to shield
more light on the controversial event, which
stakeholders insist was sponsored with state funds.
A source, who pleaded anonymity, told The Guardian
that, the opponents of the governor are already
gathering more facts to enable them present a
genuine case before the anti-graft bodies to
ascertain how much was coughed out from state
treasury for the occasion.
“Of course we are going to present our case before
the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other
Related Offences Commission (ICPC) so as to put a
stop to this kind of madness”
The source, an official of the peoples democratic
party PDP in the state who decried what he
described as the wanton waste of resources,
wondered why the plight of the masses is no longer
a priority of the leaders of this country.
But in a swift reaction, the governor’s director of
press, Illiasu Yakubu blamed the opposition for what
he termed blackmail of the office of the governor.
Illiasu, who could neither deny nor confirm the
allegation, told reporters in Lafia that the governor
as a successful business man had made his money
before entering government and as such can afford
to spend such an amount of money on his son’s
wedding ceremony.
He referred those in doubt to the code of conduct
bureau (CCB) “you can go to the code of conduct
bureau and find out how much the governor
declared before his assumption of office” he said,
adding that “those spreading the rumour are doing
so to score some cheap political points”
He further disclosed that the state government only
contributed a paltry sum of N20 million to the
governor for the success of the wedding and
wondered why people would want to make a mole
out of nothing.
