The Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, on Monday, sealed four companies in Lagos and Port Harcourt over their failure to meet their tax obligations totalling N630 million. The affected firms include Charcoal and Spices Restaurant Limited, GRA, Port Harcourt, and Cioscon Nigerian Limited at 14 Aba Road, Port Harcourt. The leader of the FIRS enforcement team, Mrs. Anita Erinne, sealed both companies after showing a warrant of distraint to officials of the company. Charcoal and Spices Restaurant Limited owes N12,388,979.50 tax debt while Cioscon Nigerian Ltd has a tax liability amounting to N479,203,464.43 from 2014 to 2016 which the firm has failed to remit. Erinne told the defaulting firms that the companies’ premises will be unsealed when they clear their outstanding tax bills. She warned the workers not to unseal or tamper with the FIRS seal until the debts are cleared, stating that any attempt to remove the seals will be a contravention of the law. Erinne, however, noted that the firms have been officially notified of their indebtedness to FIRS, stating that all the companies’ taxes should be paid before their premises could be unsealed. In Lagos, the enforcement team of the FIRS sealed Joza Global Service situated at 18, Ribadu Road, Ikoyi, Lagos over a tax debt of over N30.6 million. The FIRS team also sealed-off Spog Petrochemicals Limited situated at 50d, Glover Road, Ikoyi, Lagos over a tax debt of N105.5 million. Last week, the FIRS sealed off the premises of tax-owing companies in Abuja. Among these was an educational facility, Fanaks International Schools in the Asokoro area of the federal capital. The school was owing a total of N976,133.57 in Company Income Tax (CIT), Education Tax (EDT) and Withholding Tax (WHT). Also sealed was Hotel Bahamas International, which was owing N694,045.29 in CIT, EDT, WHT for the 2015 assessment year. Another hospitality facility, Dabiyi Hotels and Suites in Kurudu was sealed over tax liabilities totaling N4,191,996.26 carried over from the 2014 assessment year. http://leadership.ng/2017/07/18/firs-seals-4-firms-n630m-tax/

The Federal Government says it has taken steps to amend the Nigeria Broadcasting Code to discourage the production of Nigerian movies and music outside the shore of the country. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made this known on Saturday in Lagos when he paid a visit to the headquarters of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON). The Minister decried the situation whereby films, reality TV shows and music, were made outside Nigeria, for consumption by Nigerians. He said the situation had hampered empowerment of practitioners in the industry, the development of the sector and the nation’s economy in general. “This government has agreed that henceforth, whatever we consume in Nigeria in terms of music and films, must be made in Nigeria. “We cannot continue to go to South Africa or any other country to produce our films and then send them back to be consumed in Nigeria. “The Broadcasting Code and the Advertising Code are very clear on this. “For you to classify a product as a Nigerian product, it must have a certain percentage of Nigerian content,” he said. The Minister noted that what was happening today was that Nigerian artists were often flown out of this country to go and make their recordings. “When they get there, they will patronise the economy of that country and then bring the products back to Nigeria for us to consume. “It is like somebody going to China or Japan to make a product that looks like palm wine and bring it back home to label it Nigerian palm wine.” He stressed that “as long as we are not able to implement our own code to ensure local production of Nigerian music and movies, our young talents will not get jobs. “It is Nigerians that pay for the consumption of these products and therefore they must be allowed and encouraged to participate in their production. “I am going to meet with the relevant stakeholders over this, to see that whatever amendment that is needed to be made to our Broadcasting Code in this regard, is done urgently.” To encourage local production of films and music, the Minister said that Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission had put forward a proposal to classify the Creative Industry and grant it a pioneer status. He said that with the pioneer status, the creative industry would be entitled to certain incentives and tax holiday. The Minister said that there would also be waivers for shipment of imported music and films production equipment. He stressed that the Federal Government was committed to making the creative industry viable, dynamic and sustainable. Mohammed said that as one of the key areas for diversification of the economy, the creative industry would be private sector-driven, while government would create the enabling environment for its growth. The Minister lauded COSON and its management team for achieving a lot in seven years of existence. Earlier, Chairman of COSON, Chief Tony Okoroji said that the Society was an umbrella body to fight copyright infringements. He recalled that for many decades, music was broadcast freely on radio and TV stations across Nigeria, and dished out in hotels, as if they belonged to no one. In the entourage of the Minister were, the Director Generals of Nigeria Television Authority, Yakubu Mohammed and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Dr Mansur Liman.

In what appeared to be a revenge mission, a 38-year old man, Tunde Bankole has allegedly raped his neighbour’s 36-year old wife in Lagos. He was arrested and charged before a Lagos court. The incident happened at True Crescent in Oko-Oba area of Agege, Lagos where they reside. We gathered that Bankole reportedly had a quarrel with the victim’s husband and he later decided to hit back at the husband by allegedly raping his wife. It was gathered that the suspect sneaked into the victim’s apartment when her husband was not around with two kitchen knives and threatened to kill her if she refused his directives. He reportedly ordered her to her matrimonial bed, forced her to remove her clothes including her pant and open her legs. According to the police sources, the victim complied because of the threat and Bankole penetrated her to his satisfaction, collected her wedding ring and left. We reports that the victim later told her husband what happened when he was around and the matter was reported to the Police at Isokoko division who arrested Bankole. At the police station, we gathered that Bankole admitted that he had carnal knowledge of the victim but insisted that it was with her consent. However, he was unable to explain what he was doing with the knives he reportedly used in threatening the victim. He was charged before Ogba Magistrates court for the alleged rape. He pleaded not guilty. The Presiding Magistrate, Mr T.O. Shomade granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in the like sum. Bankole was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail condition. The matter was further adjourned till 17 August 2017.

We the Leaders of APC in Mushin (the constituency of Dr. Muiz Banire), unequivocally call on the National Working Committee of the Party to consider as a matter of urgency, the removal of Dr Muize Banire as the National Legal Adviser and subsequently expel him from the party. This urgent call is predicated upon several embarrassing morally deficient situations he had exposed himself to which has largely affected the image of the party and anti-party activities unbecoming of a principal officer of the party. Some of these untoward activities are listed but not limited to those highlighted below; On the court judgement against the party in Odiolowo In an interview he granted and published in the Punch Newspapers. Dr Banire alluded to a statement that he would go to court to contend and speak against the party. Truly, he did. The build up to the judgement as regards the Local Government Elections in Odiolowo was not lost on us. In suit NoID/1838/GCM/2017 before Honourable Justice Okuwobi, Dr Banire as the National Legal Adviser assigned a legal representative for the defence of the party in the suit, and instructed the legal representative to disavow the party. This was evident in his response to the party chairman’s statement against this highly unethical behaviour, wherein he categorically stated that yes he instructed the legal representative to do so, disregarding the possibility that his action could cause the party losing the forthcoming elections. We also noted with despair that, Dr Banire deliberately failed to furnish the Lagos State APC Secretariat and the Odiolowo Constituency with details of the matter in court. It would have been most reasonable that he request a legal representative from the state APC to join the legal team. This deliberate dereliction of duty to ensure the party lost the case speaks volumes. Publications against the party: A close ally of Dr Muiz Banire and frustrated ex-PDP member, Ayo Adeluola had signed a full page advertorial in punch newspaper referring to the party and our esteemed leaders as 419, amongst other uncomplimentary remarks. The same Ayo- Adeluola, a member of MEF (Dr Banire’s political group) in another attempt to bring the party into disrepute had gone to Channels TV – Politics Today, and called the party leaders in the State names and disparaged them. In a related development a known protégée of Dr Banire and member of MEF Niyi Akinsiju also signed a full page advertorial in the Punch eulogising Banire while repeating the same uncomplimentary remarks about the party. It is a well-known fact that these two funny characters are members of Banire’s MEF in Mushin. The masquerade finally unveiled itself when Dr Banire in an interview published in Sunday Punch went berserk referring to the parties hierarchy in Lagos State as thieves, alleging that they sold tickets to candidates among many other issues he raised. In the grossly unfocused interview he, also disregarded and referred to a two-time Senator of the Fedral Republic of Nigeria, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi and the Chairman of the state party electoral committee as a nobody. For the avoidance of doubt Dr Banire’s Group (MEF) in Mushin, did not only threaten to work against the party in Mushin they have actually defected to Labour Party and picked tickets to contest the forthcoming Local Government elections. This clearly shows the motive and intentions of Dr Banire to destroy our great party. We hereby call on the good people of Mushin and Odiolowo to make the issue of the recall of Hon. Funmi Tejuosho and Hon. Layi Olawale (Members representing the 2 constituencies), who are also members of MEF, to take the issue of recall of these two, expeditiously, as both of them have evidently shown in the recent past that they are no longer in support of the party on which platform they became representatives and clearly working against the interest of the constituents. For instance, Hon Lai Olawale had referred to leaders of the party in Mushin as “so called leaders” using unprintable words to describe them in the social media. How then does he lobby the political leaders in government to the advantage of his people? Banire: The master of imposition For Dr Muiz Banire to have falsely alleged at various fora that the leaders of our party impose candidates, obviously shows he is naïve not to know the difference between endorsement and imposition. If by his position, endorsement means imposition then it is most unfortunate. The following pertinent questions should be answered by him. How come his AGE LONG PARTNER Hon (MRS) Funmi Tejuosho who was impeached as Deputy Speaker has been a member of the State House of Assembly for 4 consecutive terms (16years)? At some point she was even defeated by Hounorable Razaq Ajala in primaries. Who upturned the results of that election? Is that the meaning of imposition? How did the Late Hon. Adepitan (former Executive Chairman, Mushin Local Government) and all the counsellors emerge in the last elected Government? Was there any primaries? NO! Who drew up the list? Does that look like an imposition? How was the executive of the Party in Mushin constituted? Was it through elections or imposition? Who compiled the list? For Muiz, it is endorsement if it favours him but IMPOSITION if it doesn’t. Anti-party activities Dr Banire actually predicted that the party would lose the Osun West Senatorial Election and was bold enough to mull the idea publicly. Same he predicted in Lagos during the gubernatorial elections in 2015. This is unbecoming of a high ranking Officer of the party. He also once openly condemned the Governor of Lagos State (who he ordinarily would have spoken to in private) for appointing Sole Administrators. Whereas he in his usually inconsistent character joined in celebrating the appointment of the youngest Sole Administrator. The recent desperation of Dr Banire which made him resort to name calling and casting aspersions on our revered party leaders in the state, is borne out of greed and the urge to continuously entrench in office members of MEF that have destroyed the goodwill the party enjoys in Mushin and Odiolowo. For instance, funds meant for the library named after him (Muiz Banire Libraryin Mushin local government), was grossly misappropriated to the extent that till date no single book nor furniture is in the library which has turned to a den of miscreants. One wonders why the EFCC arraigned Justice Fishim for allegedly receiving bribe and left out Dr Banire who was alleged to have given the bribe. This issue had caused so much embarrassment to the party to the extent that it is becoming indefensible against the opposition that APC is truly against corruption. It is often asked too, if morality is a pre-requisite for becoming a SAN. One is apt to conclude that he is acting true to type as his name seem to suggest “OJUBANIRE” – literarily translated to mean hypocrite. A word is enough for the wise. Let the party act now before it is too late. Bi iku ile o pani, tode o le pani. Enough is enough. We cannot allow the inordinate ambition of an individual to destroy our Party.

The suspended Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Usman Yusuf, has officially replied the Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole. In his letter dated July 12 on the official letterhead of the NHIS, Mr. Yusuf said he would not comply with the July 6 suspension order. He acknowledged receiving the letter directing he proceeds on a three months suspension, but gave five reasons why he would not comply with the suspension. The news of Mr. Yusuf’s suspension broke last week over corruption allegations. Mr. Yusuf, 54, took over the state-run health insurance provider on July 29, 2016. But his reign at the health ministry parastatal has been fraught with allegations of fraud. The suspension came weeks after the Senate launched investigations into his activities as the NHIS chief. The lawmakers accused Mr. Yusuf of “corrupt expenditure of N292 million” which he allegedly spent on health care training “without recourse to any appropriate approving authority.” The NHIS chief has denied any wrongdoing. On Wednesday, the House of Representatives asked the health minister to recall Mr. Yusuf. Mr. Adewole had ordered the suspension to allow for unhindered investigation of the corruption allegations. On Thursday, a civic group criticised the House of Reps for calling for the recall of the suspended official until the ordered investigation was concluded.

…As Police parade monarch, brother ..Says plot intended to embarrass Lagos govt, security agencies Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday approved the immediate suspension of the Baale of Shangisha in Magodo, Chief YusufOgundare for faking his kidnap which allegedly took place on July 5 along Center for Management Development (CMD) Road in Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of the State. In a memo with reference number OLGAS.83/S./Vol.1 dated July 13, 2017 addressed to the Sole Administrator of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA and signed by the State’s Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon Teslim Folami, Governor Ambode directed Ogundare to stop parading himself henceforth as the Baale of the community till further notice. According to the memo, Folami said: “I am directed to convey the approval of His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of the suspension of Chief Yusuf Ogundare, Baale of Shangisha with immediate effect in accordance with Section 38 subsection 1 of the Obas and Chiefs Laws of Lagos State which states that “the Governor may suspend or depose any Oba or chief whether appointed or after commencement of this law, if he is satisfied that such suspension of disposition is required according to customary law or is necessary in the interest of peace and good government. “You are to communicate the decision to the chieftain to stop parading himself as Baale of Shangisha with immediate effect,” Folami said. Ogundare’s suspension was approved by the Governor moments after the Lagos State Police Command paraded him alongside his younger brother, Mohammed Adams for conspiring to fake the alleged kidnap. Adams, on the fateful day, reported the alleged kidnap incidence to the police. Speaking while parading the two suspects, the State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni said the Command on July 5 received the report of Ogundare’s alleged kidnap, and immediately swung into action in collaboration with other security agencies especially the Department of State Service (DSS). Owoseni said luck however ran out on Ogundare when he was apprehended by men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Alausa area of the State on July 11 after he was dropped in a suspicious manner by a car which sped off immediately. Giving details of how Ogundare was apprehended, Owoseni said: “On July 11 at about 10pm, a team of RRS patrol officers working around Alausa had sighted a vehicle drop a male adult in a suspicious manner close by Shoprite along the Secretariat road. The speed with which that car drove off attracted them to that spot and fortunately before they got to the spot, the car had taken off and a quick enquiry revealed that it was the Baale that was allegedly kidnapped. “Immediately after while Ogundare was being debriefed, he sold a dummy that the kidnappers dropped him off but unknowingly to him, it had been found out that on the 5th of July, the day he was allegedly kidnapped in Lagos, investigation had revealed that he was driving around in Ibadan around Ashi; he went to Ilorin, he went to Iwo, he was just on a frolic. “And unknowingly to him as well that because of information that had gotten to security services that his younger brother and his wife were being questioned and were actually in custody because of some discrepancies that were noticed in the interaction they had with security agencies, and in furtherance of the synergy existing between the Police and DSS, we jointly compared notes and our findings were such that the act of the chief was despicable and amounted to crying wolf where there is none,” Owoseni said. He said while making reports, Adams had told security agencies that he was with the Baale at CMD Hotel when some people who claimed they wanted to buy land whisked them away and later dropped him, but investigation revealed that he (Adams) was not at any time in the hotel with the Baale but was only at the restaurant of the hotel, and after some minutes, he left, and the wife of the Baale actually drove the Venza car allegedly used to abduct the supposed victim into the hotel. The CP added that after the suspects were confronted with the indisputable facts, they had no choice than to confess faking the kidnap. The CP said immediately after Ogundare was allegedly kidnapped, Adams went to the community and called the town crier to order the whole community to close shops and markets should not open, an action aimed at inciting members of the community against the State Government. He said the objective of the suspects was to falsely accuse the Oba of Shangisha as the brain behind the kidnapping, which they indeed did, as a vengeance to him being installed the Oba instead of Ogundare, and also embarrassed the State Government and as well as security agencies for arresting him (Ogundare) when he falsely displayed the plate number of Oba of Shangisha on his car. Also speaking, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem also demanded the unconditional release of the six children kidnapped from Igbonla Model College since May 25. He said it was disheartening that while the State Government and security agencies were working round the clock to secure the release of the children, some unscrupulous persons deemed it fit to raise false alarm. He said it was situations as this that prompted the Governor to sign the Anti-Kidnapping bill into law, assuring that the Government would not hesitate to prosecute anyone who runs fowl of the law. He said Section 5 of the anti-kidnapping Law prescribes that “a person who overtly or covertly puts himself forward to be kidnapped or abducted by another for the purpose of extracting money or ransom, from another or for any other reason commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to fourteen (14) years imprisonment.” “Nothing can be more despicable and heinous than to raise false alarm where there is none. This is even more despicable when we consider the plight of these children that were recently kidnapped and are still being held by the kidnappers. “Let me sound a very serious note of warning that we have zero tolerance for crimes against the State. No matter how high or low you may be in the society, you can be assured that we will bring you to justice if you commit a crime. He also urged them not to rest on their oars but continue to go all out to ensure that the State remains safe and secured for residents and investors.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will halt the process of recalling Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west. Adedeji Soyebi, national commissioner of the commission, disclosed this on Thursday, saying the decision is in line with a court ruling. Last week, the federal high court, Abuja asked INEC and Melaye to maintain “status quo” pending the determination of a suit filed by Melaye to challenge the process. Soyebi said INEC would appeal the ruling. “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held its regular weekly today and considered the order given by the federal high court, Abuja dated 6th July 2017 directing the ‘parties to maintain status quo till the determination of the plaintiff’s motion on notice’ in respect of the suit filed by senator Dino Melaye seeking orders of injunction against the commission, to stop it from acting on the petition by the registered voters of Kogi west senatorial district,” he said in a statement. “As a responsible, law-abiding institution, INEC will comply with the order. However, the commission has also decided to take immediate steps to vacate the court order and for the matter to be heard expeditiously. “Whereas, the court adjourned hearing of the motion on notice on 29th September 2017, it should be noted that section 69 of the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria (as amended) sets a limit of 90 days from the date of the presentation of the petition (21st June, 2017) for the exercise to be completed. “The commission also at its meeting today, approved a policy of comprehensive audit after all elections. This is in line with its commitment of ensuring transparency and overall improvement of the electoral process.”

She said, “I noticed the page was taken down but it’s my way of welcoming everyone to the new Christabel.” Asked who this “new Christabel” was, the actress who has starred in popular movies like ‘potomanto’, and ‘sweet mistake’ answered, “it is whoever you can imagine.” “That’s why I’m not wearing anything. It appears that women have become targets of suspected ritual murders these days as many of them have been found dead and their corpses dumped on the streets of Lagos. P.M.EXPRESS reports that barely two weeks after two young women were found dead in Abaranje and Igando roads in Ikotun and their corpses dumped on the streets, another has been discovered dead and dumped in another place within the area. This time, the residents of Isheri Oshun woke up on Monday morning and found the corpse of a lady in a blue trouser and T-shirt dumped on the street. The incident happened at Ajibade Odetayo street in Isheri Oshun beside Revonia petrol Station in the outskirt of Lagos. According to the residents, the corpse found in the morning was suspected to be a victim of ritual murder and dumped in the place. The identity of the victim was not known as the residents who were present said they did not know such a face in the area. The cause of her death was not yet known because autopsy has not been carried out on her. However, the residents suspected that the victim might have been killed for ritual purposes. We gathered that the victim’s nose was stuffed with white cotton which suggested that she might have been used for ritual purpose and dumped on the road site. When we visited the scene, the corpse was still there and it appeared that there was no response yet as to removing the corpse. The residents said that they have contacted the police and other relevant agencies who promised to come to evacuate the corpse and deposit at the mortuary for autopsy report. When our reporter contacted the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, CSP Camellius Emordi, he was said not to be around to comment on the matter. However, police source confirmed that they were aware and were making efforts to attend to.

Abu Dhabi’s Etisalat has terminated its management agreement with its Nigerian arm and given the business time to phase out the brand in Nigeria, the chief executive of Etisalat International told Reuters on Monday. Nigerian regulators intervened last week to save Etisalat Nigeria from collapse after talks with its lenders to renegotiate a $1.2 billion loan failed. All UAE shareholders of Etisalat Nigeria have exited the company and have left the board and management, Hatem Dowidar said in an interview. He said discussions were ongoing with Etisalat Nigeria to provide technical support, adding that it can use the brand for another three-weeks before phasing it out. The Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC) recently indicated its support for the new management of the embattled telephone operator, Etisalat Nigeria, which is currently trying to restructure its management and operations. NCC’s support came shortly after a new board of the company emerged, with Joseph Nnanna as the new chairman. Mr. Nnanna succeeds Hakeem Bello-Osagie, who was the only surviving shareholder after the June 15 withdrawal of the major shareholder, Emirates Telecommunications Group Company, from the company. The Emirates Group, also known as Etisalat Group, was represented by its affiliate, Mubadala Development Company, a United Arab Emirate, (UAE), development firm. Mr. Bello-Osagie, the promoter of Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services, (EMTS), which controlled 15 per cent of the equity holding of the company, resigned on Friday in the wake of the deepening debt crisis with a consortium of banks. Other members of the new Board and management of the company as announced by the its spokesperson, Ibrahim Dikko, include Oluseyi Bickersteth, Ken Igbokwe, Boye Olusanya and Funke Ighodaro. Under the new management, Boye Olusanya was named Chief Executive Officer. He would replace Mathew Willsher, while Funke Ighodaro would take over from Olawole Obasunloye as Chief Finance Officer The NCC said it was pleased that parties to the crisis were able to reach amicable terms that have set them on the path of resolving the crisis. “The Commission is pleased to note that Etisalat and its creditors have successfully reached an amicable resolution of key issues pertaining to its indebtedness, and that a smooth transitional process is currently ongoing on mutually agreed terms,” said Director, Public Affairs of the Commission, Tony Ojobo, said in a statement. He noted further that the Commission was confident the amicable resolutions reached by the parties will further strengthen Etisalat’s capacity to continue to provide services to its over 20 million customers and equally fulfill its obligations to its other stakeholders. In its previous statement in the wake of the announcement of the formal exit of the major shareholder of the company, Emirates Telecommunications Group Company, and the threat by the banks to take over Etisalat, the NCC had warned that the operational license for the mobile telephone firm was not transferable to a third party. One of the points that formed the core of the agreement on the restructuring of the $1.2 billion (about N377.4 billion) loan between the consortium of banks and Etisalat Nigeria was what all parties would do with the operating license. Mr. Ojobo said the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 empowered the Commission to take steps, by working with various interest groups to resolve the crisis and ensure the industry continued to play its critical role as a key driver of national socio-economic development. He also said NCC’s intervention, along with its financial sector counterpart, the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN), was informed by the need to sustain the telecommunication industry’s significant contribution to national gross domestic product, (GDP), in terms employment and infrastructure development. In 2013, Etisalat had obtained the syndicated loan from a consortium of 13 Nigerian banks. These banks included Access Bank, Zenith Bank Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, First Bank Limited, Fidelity Bank Plc, First City Monument Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Ecobank, United Bank for Africa Plc and Union Bank of Nigeria Plc. The loan, which involved a foreign-backed guaranteed bond, was to help the mobile firm finance a major network rehabilitation, upgrade and expansion of its operational base in Nigeria. However, its alleged failure to meet agreed debt servicing obligations with the banks since 2016 triggered a major crisis which culminated in the crisis that has jolted the operations of the company, reputed to be Nigeria’s fourth largest telephone mobile operator.

The management of Sterling Bank Plc., and Wema Bank Plc., are both currently shopping for a replacement for their Group Managing Directors, (GMDs) Yemi Adeola and Segun Oloketuyi whose tenures expired in June and December respectively. It would be recalled that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2010, issued a circular that the MDs/CEOs of Nigerian banks shall no longer spend more than 10 years in office as part of efforts to sanitise the banking sector. One year after this circular, a number of banks: Zenith, Skye etc lost their MDs/CEOs to this policy. Mr. Yemi Adeola currently serves as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank Plc a role he has held since December 2007. While Mr. Segun Oloketuyi, is currently the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank Plc. Until his appointment, he was an Executive Director, Skye Bank Plc with the responsibility for business development across Lagos and South-West directorates of the bank. A source close to Wema Bank Plc, however, revealed that the Board of Directors of the bank has, therefore, appointed Ademola Adebisi as the Deputy Managing Director of the bank, which could be acting in capacity of the MD prior to his unveiling as the next MD of the bank. Meanwhile, nothing is yet to be heard of Sterling Bank Plc succession plan as the bank is also said to be searching for the next MD of the bank with also an opening hand to merger and acquisition. It will be recalled that in the past, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank Mr. Adeyemi Razack Adeola had hinted that the bank was likely to experience merger and acquisition. He said: “I think if opportunities arise for banks to pursue further consolidation, we could see two or three. I also know that two or three international banks are interested in pursuing acquisition in Nigeria and they are indeed having discussions already. “So you could see combination of one or two international banks taking over one or two Nigerian banks or merging with them. Nothing also stops two, three banks from having merger discussions in 2016 from the look of thing,” he added.

Former Nigeria forward, Nwankwo Kanu, has said that the 1993 U-17 World Cup is a tournament he will always remember being part of and the youth showpiece played a big role in shaping his career. “It’s something that I’ll always remember. That was a stepping stone for me,” Kanu who is one of the FIFA legends taking part in the draw, told FIFA’s official website. “That World Cup made me. Being at the World Cup knowing that they had been doing well, it was a big challenge for the young ones to follow in the footsteps of the ones who have been here and won it (in 1985). “There was a little bit of pressure on us to come in and do well. When we arrived and saw the atmosphere, how everybody was buzzing, we believed that we could do well,” the former West Bromwich Albion player who scored a hat-trick on his debut at that level, an 8-0 win against Canada at Japan 1993, before going on to lift the trophy with Nigeria, said. Former Argentina midfielder Esteban Cambiasso added: “In its history, we call the tournament the ‘U-17 World Cup’, but in the moment that you’re playing it and living it, it’s the World Cup, it’s not the U-17 edition.” Cambiasso said playing for the country at that level for the first time is a special feeling. The U-17 World Cup starts October 6 with the final slated to be played on October 28.

Chelsea have made a stunning offer to match Manchester United’s bid for Romelu Lukaku in a bid to wrestle him back to Stamford Bridge. But Chelsea will not match the agent fees Mino Raiola will get from Lukaku moving to United, leaving the striker with a tough decision to make. Lukaku must now decide whether to go ahead with the £75million move to United that had been set up by Raiola or effectively go against his agent to re-join Chelsea. It is understood that Chelsea still believe Lukaku would rather re-sign for them and, therefore, feel the player must make a decision based on either sporting reasons or on how much money Raiola will pocket. Chelsea are now waiting to find out whether or not Lukaku is prepared to demand to return to the Blues or go ahead with a planned United medical tonight and complete a move to Old Trafford. United are still confident of completing a deal for Lukaku in time for him to join up with the squad on the US tour on Sunday.

The chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Sabi Abdullahi, says the Senate’s rejection of nomination of Ibrahim Magu as chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, “still stands”. He made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja. Mr. Abdullahi was reacting to a statement credited to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo that Mr. Magu would remain as EFCC chairman under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. He reinstated, while being represented at the inauguration of EFCC office in Kaduna on Thursday by Gov. Nasir el-Rufai that the Presidency had resolved to work with Mr. Magu to stamp out corruption in the country. Mr. Abdullahi said, “the Senate has already made its resolution, and our resolutions are official statements. “And most times, based on how we communicate, we don’t go to press immediately because somebody has made a statement; we usually discuss issues. “You know before we made that resolution the issue was debated. It is not because the executive has said something, we will react to it. We discuss issues first. “That is what makes up an institution. Nobody in the Senate is expressing his individual opinion. We are expressing the opinion of the Senate, its stand and its position. “We have given it a resolution. For now that is what subsists, and until we get a response, otherwise officially, we are not going back.” The lawmaker called on all arms of government to respect the rule of law for the deepening of the democracy in the country. “Let us work in the interest of Nigerians. We have made a point, a point which is clear. “He was brought to us for confirmation, and on the basis of damning reports from the DSS, we rejected him twice. It is left for Nigerians to see and we have done our part,” he said.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, on Friday, said that he was a subject of controversy in Nigerian politics because he was a courageous man who did things his counterparts would not dare to do, no matter who was affected. Fayose, who disclosed this shortly after delivering the 13th convocation lecture at the Benson Idahosa University in Benin, the Edo State capital, said that it was important for one to do the “things others don’t do to get the attention others don’t get”. He explained: “Some people chose to be under the table; they don’t want to die. They are afraid. But remember that the Bible says that those who want to gain their life will lose it and those that lose their life will gain it. “And the same Bible tells me, ‘Fear for nothing’. My strength lies in God Almighty. If you put me inside running water, the water will become still. If you put me the den of lions, the teeth, the claws will go inside; you can find that in the Bible too.” The Ekiti governor, who urged Nigerians not to undermine his presidential ambition, added: “I am the man to watch in this generation. So, I am controversial because I am doing things other men like me cannot do. They are scared. They are afraid; they don’t have courage.” The Ekiti governor said that controversy was necessary for democracy to thrive and as such, Nigerians must have aired their opinions, irrespective of their political identities. While quoting Joshua 1:6-7 and nine and 17, Fayose said: “I draw my power from those things (Bible passages). When I wake up, I lie down in my bathroom and say: “Lord, many are the afflictions of the righteous. But the Lord God will deliver him from them all. “What I am saying to you is that controversy is necessary for democracy. We must have our voice. I am not an APC member and I will never be. But remember the fact that our leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a courageous man in his own right, our leader in Yoruba land, forget about politics; if they give Asiwaju appointment, he will give a Yoruba man. Whether he is in the APC does not matter. “And I came out strongly; I defended him. I am not defending politics. I am defending the truth. Our politics must have where we would stop it and say the truth as may be necessary.”

By Emeka Oparah Holy Father, I bring you fraternal greetings and best wishes from Mbaise, the home of Ahiara Diocese, yes, the same Ahiara Diocese that has been making the news. I am moved, by faith, Holy Father, to drop you these few lines, in the hope that the cabal (and it seems there’s one in the Vatican just like we have one in Nigeria’s Aso Rock and the US White House and indeed in every seat of power) would not prevent you from reading me. I am comforted by the fact that your authority, Your Holiness, derives in the most part from God not the carnal, magisterial power wielded by political leaders. Your occupation of the throne first occupied by St. Peter is by divine epiphany, Holy Father, and no man can challenge the spiritual powers you have, the Ecclesiastical authority you wield and the canonical integrity of your papacy. Holy Father, it is in full acknowledgment of the afore stated and total submission and deference to your authority that I write to add my personal apologies to those of my brothers, priests of Ahiara Diocese, from whom you have demanded a written apology as an act of contrition. Majority if not all of them have most respectfully complied with your directive-and are now fully awaiting your final instructions on the matter at hand i.e. that of the appointment of a Bishop for Ahiara Diocese. Regrettably, the appointment of Monsignor Okpaleke has been greatly impeded by the festering opposition and would seem like imposing a shepherd for an unwilling flock, if it is upheld. Well, Holy Father, you are the Supreme Pontiff, and your decision on this is final. As a good Sheperd you will NOT abandon 99 sheep for the sake one! Ighotago, Pope? Perhaps, I should actually not proceed with my missive, Holy Father, without first expressing profound gratitude to Your Holiness for most graciously accepting the apologies of my brothers even before they were all received. The letter from the Nuncio dated July 3rd, 2017, conveying your munificence is most gratifying, to say the least. You have once again demonstrated exemplary sagacity and graciousness, which, by the way, are some of the attributes that have brought about, shaped and sustained your particularly outstanding papacy. Thank you, Nnanyi Pope. Dedem Pope imeela! I dare say your magnanimous gesture was not unexpected for three major reasons. One, you are a very humble man. Two, you care very much about the flock which almighty God has handed over to you. Three, you have seen the hearts of Mbaise Catholics! Having said all these, Holy Father, it is important I tell, no matter how late it may seem that the unfortunate and avoidable crisis currently rocking Ahiara Diocese could have been obviated, if your representatives had toed the path of honour and justice. You are a very just man, yourself, and you have demonstrated this in the past. I am personally seized of the opinion that the process of selecting and appointing the Bishop of Ahiara Diocese was fundamentally flawed, because it did not follow the laid down rules. It is impossible, Your Holiness, for the late Bishop Victor Chikwe to have nominated someone outside of Ahiara Diocese as successor. That, Sir, will be a great injustice to the memory and sterling attributes and legacies of our departed Bishop. So, what I have failed to understand, and that is what has miffed quite a few Mbaise people, is how came it someone not incardinated in Ahiara Diocese and indeed in Owerri Ecclesiastical Province emerged the Bishop. Your Holiness, your wisdom and authority in these matters are never in doubt, but I believe, like others do, that something went wrong somewhere-especially because it was consistent with a pattern of appointing Bishops from a particular place. Needless to recount the number of Bishops from Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province service outside of their domain. Needless as well to query your authority in making such appointments, but there is something uncanny about the pattern and consistency of such appointment that confuses and confound. And that was why, essentially, Holy Father, we elected to resist and protest this one lest nepotism and favoritism creeps into the house of God! Sir, I feel the need to state categorically that Mbaise people are peace loving, law abiding and very gregarious and accommodating people. The only challenge with us, if indeed you consider it a challenge, is that we abhor injustice and will risk anything to resist it. And that is why it appears we have been disobedient to you, Holy Father. Once again, I apologize. But we are not disobedient. We are not, sir. We are, and I believe you are aware, predominantly Catholics. Most of us were born into it and we do not know any other church except the Roman Catholic Church. We were not going to sit idly by and allow a small bunch of power-hungry and manipulative people to destroy the integrity of the Church hence our protestations! Please permit me to place on record here, Your Holiness, that we do NOT have anything against our brethren in Awka. As a matter of fact, I personally have many good, and some great, friends from Awka and indeed Anambra State. Many of them, who are objective, are sympathetic of plight. They do not believe the red herring being sold by enemies of the the church that we hate Awka people or we are clannish and bigoted. We are absolutely not any of those, and will NEVER be, Your Holiness. Holy Father, we have made our point. Our priests have complied with your instruction. We are immersed in ceaseless prayers seeking the intercession of Mother Mary in the resolution of the rather embarrassing situation. I don’t think it will be out of place, Your Holiness, to call your attention to the fact that not only are other denominations laughing at us and literally dancing on our grave, but they are also moving into Ahiara Diocese to harvest from the few Roaming Catholics, who are ready and willing to port to other churches dues to this messy situation. I believe you will not allow the cannibalization of the Catholic no matter the circumstance. Once again I deeply appreciate your act of forgiveness and restate my irrevocable commitment to the Catholic Church and irrefragable loyalty to your authority. I know you have resolved many difficult issues during your papacy. You have even resolved a similar case in Makeni, Sierra Leone, where you took advantage of wise counsel and the guidance of the Holy Spirit to make a widely applauded and appreciated decision. We are looking forward to a similar intervention in our case, which is exactly the same as Makeni. My people say, Holy Father, and you might have to ask Cardinal Francis Arinze to help out with the translation and interpretation, that “Onye gaje Abakiliki gaduru Aba, oga foro Kiliki” (literally it means if you are going to Abakiliki and you get to Aba what’s remaining is Kiliki). With the general absolution you have conveyed to us, we believe that what is left in the matter is not much again. We are looking forward, Holy Father, to the great news. I promise you the jubilation will be great in the house of God, when justice is done and seen to have been done. And so, in conclusion, Holy Father, we are happy. We are waiting. We are praying along with you. We are rehearsing and practicing the songs of praise and thanksgiving we will sing when that final decision is made. Remember, Your Holiness, that contrary to what you have been told, Mbaise is NOT demanding you appoint a Bishop from Mbaise. We are saying appoint a Bishop from among Preists incardinated in Mbaise, according to the Canon Law. And peace shall reign forever. And Mbaise Catholic Church and the Roman Catholic Church will become united once again. Until we hear from you again, Holy Father, do please accept assurances of my highest regard and prayers always. Oparah writes from Mbaise.

To say that the All Progressives’ Congress, APC, is a party in disarray would be stating what is crystal clear. And what a preschooler can easily deduce. Among its leaders and followers, elected office holders and appointees, in its state and local government offices, it is the same tale of woe and withering hope. For the second time in about two months, the Lagos chapter of the party is in the news for the wrong reasons. Smarting from the crisis that trailed Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unilateral and unpopular decision to return unopposed some candidates in the forthcoming local government elections, the party, with its state headquarter in Acme Road, Ikeja, Lagos, is confounded by a robbery incident that took place few days ago. According to sources, the secretariat was burgled overnight and the sum of over N20million was carted away. It was such a clean job that party officials are now beaming the searchlight on workers in the vast premises. Yet, they are being careful not to make it a public affair. Coincidentally, this is happening at a time when the accused workers are agitating for better working conditions considering that they see a lot of money, raw cash, exchanging car boots, but are not positioned or privileged enough to partake in the sharing. While the surreptitious investigations continue, The Capital gathered that the workers are spoiling for a showdown should any of them be fingered.

Super Eagles and Wolves of England goalkeeper Carl Ikeme is to begin chemotherapy after being diagnosed with acute leukaemia. The Championship club say Ikeme, 31, returned “abnormal blood tests” during pre-season testing and further checks confirmed the diagnosis. Ikeme has been with Wolves for his entire career, making more than 200 appearances for Wanderers. Thirty-three of those came last season, having previously been in the team that won the League One title in 2013-14. “It would be an understatement to say that everyone at Wolves has been shocked and saddened to hear the news of Carl’s diagnosis,” said Wolves managing director Laurie Dalrymple. “That relates to both players and staff as Carl has been at the club for a very long time and remains such an integral personality within the group. “At the same time, we all know what a fighter and a competitor Carl is, and I have no doubt that he will take all of those attributes into this battle. “Similarly, its goes without saying that Carl and his family will receive the full love and support that we at Wolves can provide – we are all with him every single step of the way towards a full recovery.” Football clubs, players and team-mates of Ikeme, past and present, have been offering their support to the goalkeeper on social media. Striker Nouha Dicko: “No words can express how I feel right now. I love you Carl. We are all with you, you are a strong man, a strong wolf. Stay strong bro.” Winger Jordan Graham: “Kemes – you’re like a second father to me. The love I have for you I can’t even put into words. Stay strong we are ALL with you bro!” Millwall midfielder Jed Wallace: “One of the most genuine people you could wish to meet. Role model on and off the pitch. Stay strong big fella.” Norwich winger Matt Jarvis: “Stay strong big man! Wishing you my best!” Bolton striker Adam Le Fondre: “Absolutely gutted to hear – one of football’s top guys! My thoughts are with you and your family!!” Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has expressed shock and dismay at news on Thursday evening that Super Eagles’ number one goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, had been diagnosed with acute leukemia. A stunned NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, was lost for words after the sad news broke in the international media. “What? This is very, very sad. Carl Ikeme diagnosed with acute leukemia? This is harsh.” Sanusi stated that the NFF and the Nigerian Football family would rally round the energetic shot –stopper in his difficult period. “Our thoughts are with Carl at this difficult period. The NFF and the football fraternity in Nigeria are taken aback by this sad development, knowing how strong Carl has been in goal for Nigeria since he made his debut in 2015. “We have been told that he will start chemotherapy immediately. We want him to stay strong and remain the self –assured man that he has always been, and we will continue to pray for him and wish him the best with regards to the treatment,” Sanusi said. Ikeme has always shown ability, agility and high level of confidence between the sticks for Nigeria, since taking up the number one goalie’s responsibilities following the sudden retirement of three –time World Cup star Vincent Enyeama from international football in October 2015. He was in goal for the Super Eagles over two legs of the 2018 FIFA World Cup preliminary round against Swaziland, as well as the 2-1 defeat of Zambia in Ndola at the beginning of the group phase of the 2018 FIFA World Cup race. He was also in action against Tanzania and Egypt in 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, and in friendly games against Mali and Luxembourg in Europe last year summer.

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State have passed a vote of confidence on Senator Dino Melaye who represents Kogi West in the Senate. According to a communique issued at the end of APC Kogi State leaders meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, July 5th, 2017, the leaders declared total support for all the positions canvassed by Senator Dino Melaye in matters of Kogi State, saying the lawmaker took up the struggle on behalf of the good people of the State. The party, however, expressed worries over the political bickering vis-à-vis the state of affairs in Kogi State under Governor Yahaya Bello. The leaders while giving approval to all the steps taken so far by the State Executive of the APC in Kogi State led by its Chairman, Alhaji Haddy Ametuo also observed that the State Government under Governor Yahaya Bello is not only in a confused state of affairs, but heading towards political cul-de-sac. The communique reads in parts “The Governor Yahaya Bello’s anti-party activities led to the loss of 2 APC Senatorial seats, one House of Representatives seat and 2 State House of Assembly members’ seats to the opposition party (PDP) thereby causing a huge set-back to our Party in Kogi State.” “Those positions mentioned above were won during the 2015 elections before Alhaji Yahaya Bello joined the APC and his subsequent emergence as the Governor of Kogi State.” “The only senatorial seat left for the Kogi State APC family in the Senate is being harassed by Governor Yahaya Bello and cohorts as evidenced by the on-going charade, known as re-call exercise, which is pregnant with forgeries and absurdities.” “We are concerned that many weeks after the submission of the Chief Tony Momoh’s Reconciliation Report, the National Leadership of our Party, APC, is yet to take any step towards the implementation of its recommendations. They also admonished the Independent National electoral commission (INEC) not to waste its scarce resources in sustaining the ongoing recall being allegedly perpetuated by the Government of Kogi State. The 20 APC Kogi leaders who signed the communique are Senator Alex Kadir, Senator Mohammed Salami Ohiare, Senator Nicholas Ugbane, Senator Dangana E Ocheja, Senator Abdulrahman Abubakar, Rt. Hon Clarance Olafemi, Rt. Hon Abdullahi Bello, Hon James A Faleke, Hon Mohammed Idris and Alhaji (Prince) Mohammed Audu Others are Hon Duro Meseko, Alhaji Abubakar Rajab, Pharm. A. On Thursday, July 6, 2017 the Lagos Jazz Series Quintet will jet out of the country for Sal, Cape Verde to perform at this year’s Cape Verde JazzSal, which opens on Saturday, July 8, 2017. Sal is one of the ten Islands that make up Cape Verde. The trip to JazzSal, ignites a musical exchange programme between the two festivals. Some music experts and lovers have described this exchange as quite novel. This is the first-time musicians from Nigeria are going to Cape Verde to perform on the main stage at JazzSal. The Lagos Jazz Series, which is the music festival founded by Oti Bazunu in 2010, has evolved to become one of Africa’s most anticipated music calendar festivals. A few years ago, Bazunu recruited music graduates from the Music Society of Nigeria (Muson Centre), honed their skills and today they are heading out of the country as a group, which will represent Nigeria credibly in Cape Verde. Speaking on the invitation of the Nigerian Jazz group, Bazunu said: “The Cape Verdians seem to have huge respect for the musical skills of the boys – as we do for the small Island country folks. We are totally honoured to have been billed for their main stage at JazzSal.” According to Bazunu, the LJS Quintet – featuring Opeyemi Omotayo on the Piano, Johnson Eyo on Bass, Tosin Paul on Drums, Taiwo Clegg on trumpet and Philip Iwuagwu on Guitar, are totally prepared to pelt-out some straight-ahead jazz and Afrobeat. The group is also expected to perform a few gigs at some of the fine Hotels and Resorts on the Island. For more information about the Lagos Jazz Series, visit: http://lagosjazzseries.com/

The Senate on Wednesday again cautioned the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, over his comments on the 2017 budget and the roles of the Senate, reminding the minister that the National Assembly is not Lagos State House of Assembly. Following a point of order raised by the Chairman of the Committee on Appropriation, Danjuma Goje, the Senate advised all appointees of government to consider national interest above individual interest. Speaking on the point of order, President of the Senate Dr. Bukola Saraki particularly advised Fashola and other ministers to be mindful of their utterances. Mr. Fashola had raised the alarm that the Senate tampered with some provisions in the budget and moved money to other projects not in the plan of the executives. Although the Senate accused him of misleading Nigerians, Fashola insisted that the action of the senate negates their function of appropriation as stipulated in the constitution. He said that the Senate would hold stay on any action over the comments pending the outcome of the Minister’s summons by the House of Representatives. “I am happy that the House of Representatives is also taking up this issue. It’s a matter that we must be responsible, especially those at the position of cabinet to look at issues from a national point of view and in the interest of all Nigerians. “We will definitely wait till the outcome of his appearance before the House of Representatives before further contribution on this matter,” he said. Earlier, the appropriation chairman of the Senate, Danjuma Goje said that he raised the point of order to advise the minister to conduct himself like a minister should. He further advised Fashola to give the National Assembly its due respect stressing that the legislature was not Lagos State house of Assembly. “He is not a governor and this National Assembly is not Lagos State House of Assembly. “This is an assembly composed of very patriotic Nigerians, many have done his job, many were governors before him. “Fashola should know that dealing with the National Assembly is not Lagos State House of Assembly. If the job is too much for him he should do the honourable thing. “But no amount of blackmail by him, no amount of propaganda by him or by his surrogates will stop this National Assembly from discharging its duties in accordance with the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “We have sworn to uphold and protect this constitution and this we will do to the end of the life of this Assembly,” he said. He therefore said that the Senate should await the outcome of the minister’s appearance in the House adding that further action would be sought if the Senate was not satisfied with the decision of the Federal Representatives.

The speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kabiru Rurum, has resigned amidst allegation of collecting money to scuttle the investigation of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II. The House had moved to investigate the Emir for alleged corruption, but later backed down. Kano’s anti-corruption agency also suspended its investigation of the monarch after prominent Nigerians, including Acting President Osinbajo, intervened. The speaker, Mr. Rurum, faced allegation of being bribed to discontinue the probe, an allegation he denied. Mr. Rurum resigned on Monday in a letter read at plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Ibrahim Chidariof, who presided over the sitting on Monday. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the former speaker was alleged to have collected N100 million from business mogul Aliko Dangote but failed to share the money to the members. He had earlier at a news briefing before the assembly went on Sallah recess, denied the allegation and threatened to sue an online media organisation that first published the report. The deputy speaker, who read the letter, said Mr. Rurum resigned to protect his image due to allegations bordering on corruption leveled against him by some of the members. NAN reports that shortly after the letter was read and accepted, the lawmakers elected the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Abdullahi Atta, as the new Speaker. Mr. Atta, who represents Fagge constituency, was nominated for the position by Babangida Yakudima and Zubairu Mamuda and the nomination was unanimously accepted by the members including Mr. Rurum who was at the sitting. Stunning Emmanuella Iloba is one of the newest faces making waves in the Nigerian make-believe industry. The Delta born actress, who is in her early twenties, is currently an undergraduate at University of Lagos. She has featured in dozens of movies such as ‘Nollywood Scandal’, ‘Chevron Babes’ and ‘Dusty Roads’, among others. In this chat with THEMOMENTNG, she reveals how her career started, her dream man and sundry issues… When did your acting career start? My career started professionally in 2016. I will say it was divine actually because I wasn’t even expecting it. I went for a modeling audition and then someone walked up to me and asked if I could act and I said Yes. He said, that’s great and introduced himself as Chico Ejiro. I was speechless and that was how it all started. So it’s been God’s grace. It’s something I love doing. It’s my passion and I’m someone who follows her passion and I love what I do. My family members actually encouraged me to give it a go and they have been so supportive and I’m grateful that they love what I do. You are also a model, when did the modelling aspect come in? I will say my looks also play a part in my modeling career. And also I love to express myself. So when I started getting offers to model, I just saw it as a way of expressing myself. I’ve always had offers to model. I was into modelling before my acting career started. I love to express myself actually. What extent can you go to interpret your role? I try to make every role as realistic as possible. Everything is make-believe and I try to achieve that at all times and I will do whatever I can to make sure my script is well interpreted and my directors are pleased and so far, I have been able to do exceptionally well. I am dedicated and I study my lines well. How much can you be paid to act nude? I don’t think I would want to do that actually. I don’t have to act all the roles. I will leave the nude for those that are interested in acting nude What are the challenges you face as an actress? There are lots of challenges. From trying to cope and work with different kinds of people, and being hungry on set and sometimes the welfare is not always what you would have preferred. Being on set till late like 2am and having to wake up as early as 6am sometimes with burning eyes. There are times I will be on location for two days without doing a scene and I have to go back home hungry and stressed but that’s acting for you. I always make sure those things don’t get to me. I have preconditioned my mind to stay focused and determined. Moreover, I love acting. As far back as I can remember this is what I have always wanted to do. Every actor goes through the same rough times I believe. You just have to stay focused determined and love what you do and you will always have the energy to overcome the challenges. Have you ever experienced sexual harassment in the industry? I have never had to deal with such things. Like I said earlier, my being here is actually God’s doing. I didn’t go out looking or hustling for roles or begging someone to cast me. God used someone to locate me and that was it. If I didn’t give my body to get into the industry, I shouldn’t give it to stay in it and God kept those things away from me. Are you dating someone at the moment? No. I am not dating any man at the moment. I’m currently single. Describe your kind of man? I like my man to be tall, caring and loving and of course God fearing. He must be smart and of course genuinely interested in me. Who is your role model? My role models are Genevieve Nnaji and Rita Dominic. I have always loved their acting long before I started acting. I admire them a lot. Do you plan going into other aspects of production apart from acting? I’m not restricted to acting alone. I have plans to go into directing and production too and I’m already working on my own production. Tell us about your most memorable day? My most memorable day would be when Chico Ejiro approached me and he gave me the platform for all these. So that day is my most memorable day. It’s not every day we have such opportunity. Where do you see yourself five years from now? Five years from now, I want to see myself still acting of course. I love acting and I don’t see myself stopping any time soon. I want to be able to work with some of the biggest names, both home and abroad and be able to take my acting to the world.

The federal government says it has released N420.2m to Nollywood to improve and support aspiring practitioners. Patricia Deworitshe, Deputy Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Finance, on Friday, said the money, which is the second tranche payment, will benefit 105 film distributors. The Federal Government had earlier introduced the ‘Project Act Nollywood,’ with three primary components aimed at developing the movie making value chain. The components are the Film Production Fund (FPF), Capacity Building Fund (CBF) and Innovative Distribution Fund (IDF). The FPF and CBF have been fully implemented, while the IDF, which is the third component of the project, is on-going. The IDF covers online, national, regional and community categories of Nollywood film distribution and exhibition. The objectives of IDF are to improve the distribution network of Nigerian audio-visual contents, cut down on piracy, create jobs, and protect intellectual property rights (IPR) within the Nigerian entertainment industry. N1.8bn was approved for disbursement to 106 beneficiaries in this component, and N1.335bn was disbursed earlier in the year as the first tranche to 105 beneficiaries. Deworitshe said that before the release of the second tranche, the finance ministry had earlier carried out a successful monitoring and evaluation of the first tranche disbursement. “Fifteen community cinemas and viewing centres have been established through the grant and this has improved the distribution network of movies in Nigeria,” she said. “The programme has supported 18 firms in strengthening online distribution platforms, this has helped curb illegal downloads and piracy. “Two hundred and fifty-six permanent jobs and 544 temporary jobs have been created through the financial support provided to 105 beneficiaries by the programme.” Deworitshe said the programme had also aided the extension of the Nollywood industry to sub-Sahara Africa through the funding of national distributors to expand their distribution capacity and network. She said through the programme, distributors had expanded their capacity to lip-synching their content in French for onward distribution to the ECOWAS sub-region.

The Nigerian Army said it has discovered a shallow grave where a missing major general, Muhammed Alkali, was buried after he was killed. The army said the body was later exhumed and reburied somewhere else by the killers, according to the information provided to it by some of the arrested suspects. According to the army, the shallow grave was confirmed by four independent sources in the community and also by sniffer dogs. A PREMIUM TIMES correspondent who visited the area of the shallow grave reports that there is a distance of one kilometre between the main road and the location of the grave. Mr Alkali was the immediate past chief of administration of the Nigerian Army. He was declared missing on September 3 when he was traveling from Abuja to Bauchi State. He is believed to have been killed by his abductors. PREMIUM TIMES reported how the car of the missing general was found weeks ago in the community’s pond after it was drained. A blood-stained T-shirt, a boxer short and a pair of shoes believed to belong to the general were found in the car. Since the discovery of the car, there have been fears the military could attack the community in retaliation. A day after the car was found, the army cordoned off the Dura Du community and arrested 30 suspects in connection with the suspected murder of the general. Apart from the discovery of the missing car, two other vehicles were also recovered from the pond. Following the arrest of the 30 suspects, residents of the community fled for fear of military action but the army pledged to conduct the search with respect for human rights. On Friday, a major general, B. A. Akinruluyo, the General Officer Commanding, 3 Division, Rukuba Barracks, narrated how the shallow grave was discovered. “Please note that four different sources not known to each other at various times took us to the opened shallow grave where the senior officer was earlier buried but subsequently removed,” he said. “Furthermore, sniffer dogs that have been cultured with the personal effects of the senior officer led us to the same open shallow grave. That was the only grave we were led to by different people and sniffer dogs. We did not go to any other grave as the operation was carried out based on credible intelligence. Nigeria Army personnel on the grave site “Like I always say, the cordon and search operation is intelligence driven and that is why the operation has been conducted in line with international best practices and respect for human rights. This further explains why the (army) division did not clamp down on the entire community. Only the perpetrators are being targeted. “At this point, let me reiterate that all the actors involved in this dastardly act who are still at large are known to us. All efforts are being made to get them arrested and be brought to justice as their photographs and personal details are with the relevant security agencies. “The cordon and search operation conducted by own troops has really exposed the heinous crimes being committed by the few but fully supported and concealed by the entire community. I want to commend members of the public for their cooperation and still solicit for anyone with credible information on where the senior officer was reburied. It is the civic responsibility of the Dura-Du community to produce the corpse of the deceased senior officer and those who were involved in the killing of the senior officer. “Finally, the division also wishes to emphasise its adherence to the principles and respect of human rights in the discharge of its constitutional roles. It further calls on everyone within its area of responsibility to remain vigilant and report any suspected breach of the peace to security agencies,” the major general said. |
