Nathaniel Bassey, fondly referred to as ‘Nat’ was born in Lagos to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Bassey and hails from Ikot Ofon Ikono, Uyo local government area in Akwa-Ibom state, South-South Nigeria. He is the first son and the second child amidst four children and also in his early 30’s and from an early age, he developed a love for both music and the gospel.
He was inspired when he saw Dr. Panama Percy Paul, a prominent Nigerian gospel music icon in concert over twenty years ago and since then, his passion for music has grown and translated into various musical experiences.
In his early years, he developed a rather uncommon interest for jazz music and began listening, imitating and playing to the music of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davies, Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and Kirk Whalum, Phil Driscoll, Hugh Masakela and other Jazz luminaries.
He also serves as Pastor of The Oasis – the Youth church of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, The King’s court, Victoria – Island Lagos.
Nathaniel Bassey’s desire is to change the sound and attitude of gospel music and be in line with what the Lord wants. His lifestyle is worshipping God and he also believes in being simple and accessible. As a gifted and spirit filled worship leader, he has numerous albums to his credit which includes his debut album Elohim, recorded and mixed in Cape Town, South Africa in 2008.
He is the Founder of a trumpet school called Trumpet and Ministerial Academy (TAMA) in Surulere, Lagos where he mentors and teach young, zealous youths how to play trumpet free of charge, he is involved in stand-up comedy and also engages as master of ceremony at various occasions; he loves soccer and is a fan of Barcelona football club. He is married to Sarah Bassey and they have a son, David.
He is a down to earth person and it shows in his dress sense as he is always in a simple neatly tailored apparel and sometimes suits and his trumpet and a welcoming smile.
