NEWS DIGEST – A police officer serving with the Police Command in Nasarawa State has been shot dead by suspected armed robbers along Akwanga-Wamba road in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Samaila Usman, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lafia.

“The police patrol along the axis on July 15 ran into a road block mounted by the suspected criminals and a gun battle ensued.

NEWS DIGEST – Indian police this Tuesday said they have arrested 17 men for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl over several weeks, in the country’s latest horrific sexual assault case.

The girl, who has a hearing disability, was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a largely unoccupied apartment block in the southern city of Chennai.

Among those arrested were the 300-flat building’s security guards, plumber and lift operator, state police said.

NEWS DIGEST – President Muhammadu Buhari will on Sunday depart for the Netherlands to participate in activities to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), at The Hague.

Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity made this known in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

According to Adesina, President Buhari is the only world leader invited to deliver a keynote address during the Solemn Hearing to commemorate the anniversary at Courtroom 1 of the ICC’s Headquarters at The Hague.

He said: “In buttressing Nigeria’s commitment as a member of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the ICC, the President, as the current anti-corruption champion for the African Union, will use the global platform to reaffirm Nigeria’s support to the fundamental values of the Rome Statute and to the ideals of the ICC.’’

He said the President would also highlight his administration’s campaign against corruption in Nigeria at the event.

NEWS DIGEST -A man was sentenced to more than 250 years’ imprisonment and four life sentences in the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane on Wednesday after being found guilty on 31 charges including rape and attempted murder.

David Mamvura, 27, was sentenced to 259 years plus four life sentences after being found guilty of 31 charges of rape, attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, housebreaking and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
His reign of terror in Polokwane lasted from 2012 until 2014.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said his first victim was a 24-year-old woman who was raped at her home in August 2012.
“[She] was raped at her home by the accused and her husband was hit with a hammer on the head and sustained serious head injuries that left him paralysed,” Ngoepe said.

NEWS DIGEST -The Coordinator, South-East Caucus, National Committee of Buhari Support Group, Sen. Hope Uzodinma, says nothing will stop President Muhammadu Buhari from landslide victory in the South-East in 2019.

Uzodinma stated this at the inaugural meeting of the caucus in Abuja on Thursday.

He said that the caucus’ target was to deliver not less than six million votes out of estimated eight million registered voters in the South-East.

He said the caucus would not rest on its oars in ensuring that the goal became a reality in view of what the region stood to gain if the target was achieved.

According to the coordinator, an overwhelming vote that will return Buhari as President in 2019 will guarantee the South-East an opportunity to produce the President in 2023.
