She has filed for dissolution of her marriage to Derek Chauvin," the Sekula Law Office said in a statement Friday night. "While Ms. Chauvin has no children from her current marriage, she respectfully requests that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy during this difficult time." Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in connection with Floyd’s death, which has prompted nationwide protests that have turned violent in several cites. I agree with her completely. It is racism and we should call it so. It's great that everyone realized that Koreans don't look alike after a while and it's okay to mistake a face you're not familiar with even now (it still happens to me), with one that you are but it doesn't change the fact that the entire phenomenon at the initial stage wasn't just confusion, it was RAC*SM.
In Nigeria, we are grown rac*st to NON-WHITE people. If you're honest with yourself, at one time or the other you've referred to a Lebanese or Chin.ese or Korean as "yellow" or "escape from white" or some other funny but derogatory term. You'd also realize that you've NEVER said this about someone "convincingly white enough", say American or European. If you have ever paid attention in a shop you'd notice the difference between how both groups are treated at the counter also.
While it's great that our exposure to Korean entertainment has helped change this "very st*pid" upbringing, if we do not call this action by what it is then we too have failed.
Obviously, just a small group on nairaland can't change years of "wrong, unconscious training" but it can mean that your immediate world of contact comes to the same realization you have.
