AutosRe: MY Terrible Experience With CHUCKY234 by TheRealGEJ: 8:52am On Oct 10, 2015
Funny world. Well I blame the OP. I repeat, I blame him. It is not a crime to trust yes and that is true but the honest truth is that if you work hard for your money, you should be cautious with everything that has to do with money.
Sometimes in July, I saw a add on 2003 Mercedes Benz W203 C200 on nairaland as advertised by CHUCKY234. I was interested in the car but my location was a barrier. He agreed to help me deliver to my location after paying the driver. But after a lot of consultations with friends, I decided to go see the car myself in UYO. We agreed on #850K.
I went with a friend that knows a little about cars. We left VERY early and got there by 2pm. On seeing the car, I was disappointed, a lot on scratches on the body( considering the fact that chucks told me, the car is 9 MONTHS used in Nigeria). That was a turn off already, I looked around the tyres, they're all deplated only one was good. My friend said it can be fixed but let's start the car and see the performance of the engine. We started the car, throttle but no response, we throttle again nothing, at this point my friend said the car is worth #500k because the fix could amount to 200 or 300k. I called him and told him my observation but he keep saying the car was sound before it left Lagos and it's one his drivers that drove the car to Uyo. And the faults with the tyre must have been as a result of bad road. To cut a long story short, he said I should pay #700k but I insisted on #500k and the deal was off.
I learnt a big lesson that day NEVER EVER to pay for a car I've not seen and have properly inspected because dealers can be deceptive, all they want is the money, so you can't get the truth all the time.
Chucks is not a scammer but there are some crazy deals in which one should be careful about like the one the OP is talking about.

Drive to any mobil petrol station and buy 5W30.
Not here in Yenagoa. Though I'm planing to order online. Or ask someone in Lagos to get and send it down to me. Presently its on 400miles, I will just park it until I change to the OEM specifications. Thanks for your prompt reply and advice.

please house. I need your help here. I changed my wife's car engine. Though I wasn't around when the engine was changed. And when I came back I noticed they use mobile oil instead of the 5w20 or 5w30. OEM. I asked and was told they couldn't find it here. Though I planned changing oil when it clock 2000miles or 2500miles. Will that be too late or will there be any problem when I revert to the OEM specification.

if u r sticking with corrola, I don't think corrola has a V6 engine variant in all its models.
rather engine sizes 1.6l, 1.8l etc

bt corrola will work magic for u o
Thanks bro. So the engine size of 1.8l should be better than the one of 1.6l right ?

Toyota Corolla is your best choice here because it's consume less fuel and give you more mileage and also easy to maintain. parts availability very plenty.

Note: This does not mean other vehicles are not reliable in terms of the above quality, all cars need regular maintainance in other to stay healthy and serve you well. If you keep up with the rules of vehicle usage and maintenance, trust me your vehicle won't have any business with staying at the mechanic workshop save for routine maintenance and oil change.
Thanks a lot for the advice. Should I stick with the v6 or V4 engine.
Car TalkPlease Advice On Car To Buy by TheRealGEJ(op): 9:59am On Aug 28, 2015
I want to buy a car and I need your help on choices base on the following criteria;
Reliablilty
Cheap cost of maintenance
Low fuel consumption
Availability of parts
Either V6 or V4
A car that would let you save and won't visit the mechanic regularly (I heared some car won't let you save a dine lolz)
I'm considering Toyota Camry 2.4 or Toyota Corolla 2004 or 2005. Any other choice or your advice base on the above will be appreciated.

A lot has been said already which i share most views. I dont support a change unless its an upgrade you want.

A change may come with all set of new problems you are not aware of or may develop. It is often said, "you dont know what you have until you lose it".

You car is now ok so why the stress. Your old engine overheating problem was never solved thats why you lost it. Next time, make sure it is solved since you now know the consequence.

Honda doesnt have overheating problems, you car had. Most common problems of Honda are easy and cheaper to deal with. For example, Honda's are said to have ball joint problem sooner than toyota's while toyota's have a reputation of having weak shock absorbers sooner than Honda. While the two cars are prone to these problems, ball joints are cheaper than shock absorbers. Another problem they claim Honda is prone to is gear box, the solution to that is follow the recommendations of Honda owners manual.

I drive a 2003 accord and am proud of it.
Thanks a lot for your advice . I will do as you guys just said and stick to what I already have. I really appreciate you guys.
Thanks everyone for the comments
God bless

Thanks all for your comments so far. It's not that I'm only interested in swapping of cars. It's just that recently I started reading more on cars on nairaland and feels honda cars are a bit problematic hence I'm scared because I don't want to go through major repairs again at least for now. Hence I'm asking if I should swap it for a Toyota or stick with the Honda since I've changed the engine .
Thanks all for you comments

You bought an abused Honda Accord. Maintenance is vital to car ownership. It is always advisable to engage in a preventive maintenance rather than the Nigerian attitude of "if it's not broken don't fix it". Most Nigerian used cars have hidden problems. They begin to surface after a while of purchase.

The overheating problem often start with the abuse I mentioned earlier arising from thermostat removal to using water as coolant or even the wrong type of coolant. A lot of car owners prefer to use fake parts because of cost of OEM parts. One good example is the general use of 20w-50 engine oil rating.

Irrespective of which model you are buying, you need to treat it right. Honda vehicles are more sensitive than its cousin competitor Toyota. You pay dearly for any kind of abuse especially they new model ones. You are not specific in terms of what vehicles are in offer for your swoop. The Acura & Infinity FX you listed are of a different class to the Camry & Corolla. What model of Mercedes are you referring to here? When buying a car, you should factor in cost of long time usage not just the immediate cost of acquisition.
Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate that. The Mercedes is a 2003 C200 compressor, the Camry is 2.4 (big daddy) while the Corolla is 2004 LE. Should I go for any of these or should I stick with the Honda since it's a new engine?

I really need your advice here as I'm in a confused state right now.
I bought a Nigerian used Honda Accord 2004 last month, and my experience with it wasn't funny at all. From changing of shock and doing some electrical work as well. But the issue started with the overheating which really gave me a big headache, I had to change gasket and do all all I was adviced to. Even stopped using my A.C, at first it slowed down but later came up. The overheating this time around was very severe that it knocked the car engine. I just changed the car engine and the overheating has stopped but I'm really disappointed about the whole thing.
I have already concluded plans to sell it off though everything is now okay with the car but I'm just being cautious not to face any other challenge about the car especially reports I've been reading here on nairaland about frequent issues that Honda cars are prone to. Though I've seen people used Honda for long here without packing it at the Mechanic but I don't know if theirs had issues or something.
I intend selling it off but a car dealer is offering me a Nigerian used Mercedes, Acura, Toyota )Camry or Corolla) or Infinity fx35 for the Honda ( he's aware of the engine I changed ). Though I will prefer either the Toyota or Mercedes
Should I take Toyota or stick with the Honda.
Please don't just read, your opinion will highly be appreciated
Thanks all

Fellow nairalanders on this Mercedes thread. I really need your advice. I made a huge mistake buying EOD honda and i have sold it already. It's been one problem to another. I am a low salary earner but this car really dealt with me. Almost every week, it's mechanic shop. Though I was adviced by a friend that works with Coscharis to buy Mercedes that though it's expensive to maintain but maintenance and repair is not an every day thing. Or if I am not too comfortable with the Mercedes, I should just stick to Toyota but he would NEVER advice me to buy any honda. I wish I listened. But that's history now!
I want the Mercedes now, though I'm looking for a W203 C class 2002 to 2005 models or should I just go for Toyota products ( Camry or Corolla ). I don't want to experience wat I went through with that honda. Really need your advice.
