The African civet The African civet (Civettictis civetta) is a large viverrid native to sub-Saharan Africa, where it is considered common and widely distributed in woodlands and secondary forests. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List since 2008. In some countries, it is threatened by hunting, and wild-caught individuals are kept for producing civetone for the perfume industry. The African civet is primarily nocturnal and spends the day sleeping in dense vegetation, but wakes up at sunset. It is a solitary mammal with a unique coloration: the black and white blotches covering its coarse pelage and rings on the tail are an effective cryptic pattern. The black bands surrounding its eyes closely resemble those of the raccoon. Other distinguishing features are its disproportionately large hindquarters and its erectile dorsal crest. It is an omnivorous generalist, preying on small vertebrates, invertebrates, eggs, carrion, and vegetable matter. It is one of the few carnivores capable of eating toxic invertebrates such as termites and millipedes. It detects prey primarily by smell and sound rather than by sight. It is the sole member of the genus Civettictis

The dama gazelle The dama gazelle (Nanger dama), also known as the addra gazelle or mhorr gazelle, is a species of gazelle. It lives in Africa, in the Sahara desert and the Sahel. A critically endangered species, it has disappeared from most of its former range due to overhunting and habitat loss, and natural populations only remain in Chad, Mali, Niger and Nigeria. Its habitat includes grassland, shrubland, semi-deserts, open savanna and mountain plateaus. Its diet includes grasses, leaves (especially Acacia leaves), shoots, and fruit. In Niger, the dama gazelle has become a national symbol. Under the Hausa name meyna or ménas, the dama gazelle appears on the badge of the Niger national football team, who are popularly called the Ménas

yellow Fin Tuna A tuna is a saltwater fish that belongs to the tribe Thunnini, a subgrouping of the Scombridae (mackerel) family. The Thunnini comprise 15 species across five genera, the sizes of which vary greatly, ranging from the bullet tuna (max length: 50 cm or 1.6 ft, weight: 1.8 kg or 4 lb) up to the Atlantic bluefin tuna (max length: 4.6 m or 15 ft, weight: 684 kg or 1,508 lb), which averages 2 m (6.6 ft) and is believed to live up to 50 years. Tuna, opah and mackerel sharks are the only species of fish that can maintain a body temperature higher than that of the surrounding water. An active and agile predator, the tuna has a sleek, streamlined body, and is among the fastest-swimming pelagic fish – the yellowfin tuna, for example, is capable of speeds of up to 75 km/h (47 mph).Greatly inflated speeds can be found in early scientific reports and are still widely reported in the popular literature. Found in warm seas, the tuna is commercially fished extensively as a food fish, and is popular as a bluewater game fish. As a result of overfishing, some tuna species, such as the southern bluefin tuna, are threatened with extinction.

The blue marlin is a species of marlin endemic to the Atlantic Ocean. It is closely related to, and usually considered conspecific with, the Indo-Pacific blue marlin, then simply called blue marlin. Some authorities still consider both species distinct. The Atlantic blue marlin (hereafter, blue marlin) feeds on a wide variety of organisms near the surface. It uses its bill to stun, injure, or kill while knifing through a school of fish or other prey, then returns to eat the injured or stunned fish. Marlin is a popular game fish. The relatively high fat content of its meat makes it commercially valuable in certain markets. It is the national fish of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and is featured on its coat of arms even though found through tropical countries including Nigeria. Blue marlin are distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A bluewater fish that spends the majority of its life in the open sea far from land, the blue marlin preys on a wide variety of marine organisms, mostly near the surface, often using its bill to stun or injure its prey. Females can grow up to four times the weight of males. The maximum published weight is 818 kg (1,803 lb) and length 5 m (16.4 ft).Greater lengths have been claimed unofficially

The rock firefinch The rock firefinch (Lagonosticta sanguinodorsalis) is a species of estrildid finch found in the Jos Plateau of central Nigeria and in Cameroon. It has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 29,000 km2. The rock firefinch was discovered recently, in 1998-as if=. Rock firefinches fall in the family Estrildidae, which contains small passerine birds of the Old World and Australasia. Rock firefinches seem to be most closely related to Mali firefinches and Chad firefinches. The species name sanguinodorsalis means blood-red back, which was chosen because it describes the vibrant red back color of the male plumage. Rock firefinches are sexually dimorphic, where adult males have more brightly colored plumage than adult females.Males are characterized by a bright red back and a deep red face, throat, breast, and belly. Females are characterized by a reddish-brown back, brownish-gray face, and a greyish-red throat, breast, and belly. A bluish-grey bill is one of the most important defining traits of all rock firefinches. Both males and females have a brownish-grey crown, brownish-red upper wing coverts, deep red rump and upper tail coverts, and white-spotted dark grey flanks and under wing coverts. The wings are dark reddish-brown and the tail is black with red edges on the outer rectrices.

Top of the Morning gorelovers The Jos Plateau indigobird (Vidua maryae) is a species of bird in the family Viduidae. It is endemic to Nigeria. It lays its eggs in the nest of the rock firefinch which is also restricted to Nigeria. Because of their inability to incubate their eggs, they lay their eggs in the nest of the rock firefinch and then take away the exact number of laid eggs from the host bird in order to avoid suspicion from the host bird . After hatching they exhibit dominance against the hatchlings of the rock firefinchers. Their breeding seasons are all round the year but more pronounced during the cold Harmattan period between July and December.

THE NIGERIAN HIPPOPOTAMUS In Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, the IUCN estimates that only 100 hippos remain. They occur in protected areas, such as national parks and game reserves, and outside protected areas in estuarine habitats, inland rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. These battle tanks are very territorial. Across Africa, about 3,000 people are killed by hippos annually. If you see get to see one by mistake maybe just crossing the road minding your bussines, checking your bet slip , don’t bother running , don’t bother checking the game if e cut , just count the seconds remaining to see your good lord !!!

Night camera captures Nigerian leopards Leopards are notoriously secretive and highly elusive animals by nature, and usually like to stay hidden from sight. Leopards are also the supreme masters at using their spotted coats as the perfect form of camouflage when moving among thick grass and vegetation in the daytime. In addition to that, being a big cat, the leopard is typically more active at night when most people are sleeping, so it is very rarely seen - even in other countries where they are very common. Therefore it is very hard to see or spot a leopard in the wild in general anyway, no matter how many of them are around. Another important point is that wildlife tourism is not a major money-earner in West African countries like Nigeria, so the monitoring and management of many animal species populations in Nigeria is heavily understudied and low on reliable data. Based on all the above stated factors and current evidence available, some wildlife experts and researchers now agree that it is very possible and plausible that there are more leopards in Nigeria than initially believed.

Leopards Leopards still live in Nigeria. Having said that, due to habitat destruction and overhunting by humans, leopards have disappeared from many parts of West Africa where they used to be abundant, and West Africa is the region of Africa where Nigeria is located. The leopard’s current survival status in Nigeria is extant according to the latest official figures compiled by wildlife experts and researchers,

Preuss's red colobus Preuss’s Colobus is a red colobus primate species endemic to the Cross-Sanaga Rivers ecoregion. An important population occurs in Korup National Park, Southwest Province, Cameroon, but the species' distribution is localized (groups are frequently encountered near the main tourist camps). The species is considered present in adjacent Cross River National Park - Oban Division in Nigeria and hunter reports suggest that few groups remain in Nkwende Hills and Nta Ali Forest Reserve in the broader Korup region. A population is also present in Ebo forest, Littoral Province of Cameroon.

African-Nigerian lions Lions one of the world’s best known and most charismatic species, which are found in Nigeria, other parts of West and Central Africa, are on the brink of extinction. A report by UK-based conservation group LionAid, said as few as 645 lions remain in the wild in western and central Africa. It says lions are extinct in 25 African nations and virtually extinct in 10, and it estimates that 15,000 wild lions remain on the continent as a whole, compared with about 200,000 30 years ago, with as few as 34 remaining in the whole of Nigeria. Although lions are classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, lion populations in West Africa are particularly small and fragmented and have been recently classified as critically endangered.! Shame really To Zoo Owners : Treat our lions better more than half of the pictures of Nigerian lions in Zoos are Highly starved and lack their magestic appearance. Fucking feed the Lions!!!

Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzees – These are the most threatened and least distributed of all chimpanzees, and you can see these unique animals at Gashaka-Gumti National Park and Ngel Nyaki Forest Reserve. The Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes ellioti) is a subspecies of the common chimpanzee which inhabits the rainforest along the border of Nigeria and Cameroon. Male Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzees can weigh up to 70 kilos with a body length of up to 1.2 metres and a height of 1.3 metres. Females are significantly smaller. Like the nominate subspecies, the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee has been classified as Endangered by the IUCN, indicating a high risk of extinction in the near future.

The Savanah Nigerian Elephants Nigeria has two different species of elephant: the forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) and the savanna or bush elephant (Loxodonta africana). Forest elephants are now classified as critically endangered, following an 86 percent population decline over the last 30 years, while the savanna elephant is now classified as endangered, with populations having decreased at least 60 percent over the last 50 years. Hundreds of thousands of elephants once roamed across Nigeria. However as a result of poaching for their ivory and habitat loss, it is estimated that fewer than 400 remain today. Elephants are on the very edge of extinction in Nigeria. Please stop poaching!!!
