Travel / Re: US Embassy Denies Blocking Visa Interview Appointments by thickmass: 6:23pm On Aug 28, 2019
Despirado121:
The US Embassy in Abuja has denied blocking appointment dates for visa interview of Nigerians seeking to travel to their country.

The embassy’s Public Affairs Department told newsmen on Wednesday that reports of the embassy blocking appointment dates for Nigerians awaiting visa interview were false.

Reports had said on August 20 that Nigerians who had applied for US visa could not get appointment dates for an interview despite payment of visa fees.

According to the reports, after payment, once an applicant attempts to make an interview appointment, the applicant is informed through the US Embassy’s consultant website CGI INC that there are no available dates for visa appointments.

“There has been no block on visa interviews. There are interview appointment opportunities available,” the embassy said.

The US embassy had announced on Tuesday that it had increased fees for Nigerians applying for tourism, student and business visas.

It said that effective from August 29 Nigerians applying for the aforementioned visas which used to cost N59, 200, would do so with an extra $110 (N40, 700) bringing the total amount to N99, 900.

According to the statement the embassy issued, applicants who are denied visas would not need to pay the extra N40, 700.

The U.S. Embassy, Abuja has denied blocking appointment dates for visa interview of Nigerians seeking to travel to that country.
The Public Affairs Department of the Embassy made this known in response to a question by a correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.

The embassy said, “there has been no block on visa interviews. There are interview appointment opportunities available”, in a very short and tacit reply.

NAN reports that a visa interview is intended for a more in-depth communication between the applicant and the representative of a diplomatic office.

A citizen of a foreign country, who wishes to enter the U.S. is expected to first obtain a visa, either a non-immigrant visa for temporary stay or an immigrant visa for permanent residence.

Citizens of qualified countries may be also able to visit the U.S. without a visa under the Visa Waiver Programme.

NAN reports that on Aug. 20, some social media platforms reported that Nigerians who had applied for U.S visa could not get an appointment for an interview despite payment of Visa fees.

According to the reports, after payment, once an applicant attempts to make an interview appointment, the applicant is informed through the U.S. Embassy’s consultant website CGI INC that there are no available dates for visa appointments.

Family / Re: Nigerian Wedding Help?! - Non Nigerian To Nigerian by thickmass: 6:52pm On Jan 03, 2018
TashaAde:
Hi

I am hoping someone can help. I am getting a lot of mixed information in regards to marriage certificates. Me (British) and my partner (Nigerian) are getting married in February.. we were going to go to the local registry officer near where he lives but then was told we should go to Ikoyi Registry as they are the only ones that issue federal marriage certificates and if we get married at the local registry the certificate would not be recognised internationally i.e back in UK.

Is this true as I cannot seem to find a straight answer anywhere and now getting worried as what is best to do to avoid any problems with the certificate in the future.

My partner went to the local registry today to ask their advice and they said it would be ok to have it there but I just want everything to be right.

Any help would be appreciated!
Yes, go to Ikoyi Registry to get it done. My Uncle and the wife who now live in England did theirs there. His wife is Scotish. Please you and your man must avoid going to a local government registry because it is not recognised internationally. Ikoyi Registry is the best!

Crime / Herdsmen’s Killings: South-east Governors Are Lily-livered— Hon. Prestige Ossy by thickmass: 12:42pm On Oct 24, 2016
Fulani herdsmen have been terrorising some communities in the country, especially in the South East. What is your advice to governors and lawmakers in the zone? It takes one with guts to be a leader. Most of them are lily-livered. There is nothing that will stop you as a leader, as a governor or a member of the House from saying something that will protect your people. If you cannot take the bull by the horn by enacting laws that will protect the citizens of your state, then I don’t know what else you are talking about. Most of them don’t have that confidence. If you have confidence in yourself, I don’t see any reason why you should not come up with such legislation because you are not doing it against anybody. Nobody will be happy to come to his farm the next morning to see that his farm is ravaged by herdsmen. It is never done but because of the fear of the unknown, ‘who knows if I say this now, what will happen?’ some of them are even thinking of second tenure. ‘If I say this now, these people might make it difficult for me to go for second tenure’. That is actually the problem. I don’t see any reason why most of them in the South-East are keeping quiet when these things happen. I am challenging them, if they know that they actually have the mandate of the people, let them speak for the people and do things right for the people. I don’t see the reason why they should shy away from the truth of the matter by enacting laws to protect our farmers and our citizens from the rampaging herdsmen. Have you made any effort to talk with the Abia State governor or Speaker on the herdsmen’s attacks? Let me say this, I have a lot of programmes here at the National Assembly but they (governors) are there in the South-East, they know what the problems are, and that is why we elected them. They also elected me to come to Abuja and look at those laws that will benefit our people and bring in Federal Government presence that our state should get from the center. I feel sad that most of them are just there, these things are going on and none of them is speaking but that does not mean that I wouldn’t make out time.

You don't pick a fight with the igbos and win. Ask northern nigeria how they're looking now, ask the oba that wished them death by lagoon how his people are dying in the lagoon(they say am insensitive by saying this but what da hell..)

If this news is true, then the oba and his people have difficult days ahead. Am not bragging, am just stating the obvious

Before you talk, remember what lead to this..the dressing of an Igbo that honored his invitation. After Wch the Igbo apologized after being humiliated..it takes a big man to admit when he's wrong, it takes a bigger man to apologize even when he's right

You are so bigoted that it is impossible to argue with you.

Nairaland / General / Boko Haram Attacked Our Building ─ T.B. Joshua by thickmass: 12:21pm On Sep 15, 2014
The founder and General overseer of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, Prophet T. B. Joshua has said Boko Haram may be responsible for the collapse of a six-storey building in the church premises.

Joshua, who told members of his church on Sunday not to be afraid, said the attack was targeted at him and not at them.

The prophet made it clear that the collapse of the six-storey building at around 11.45am on Friday which led to the death of no fewer than 16 persons was a Boko Haram attack.

Joshua buttressed his claim by showing to his congregation on the Emmanuel TV the chronology of events shortly before and after the accident as captured by the church’s CCTV.

He said, “I received a phone call immediately I got here, just 10 minutes later when I was in the church, that there was a jet hovering over the mountain where I had just left. They said it was hovering at a close range. Before I knew it, I received another phone call that the same jet was now at the church hovering over the building, passing it four times at a very close range before the building collapsed.”

Joshua read to the church a letter which he said was addressed to him by a Boko Haram member, confessing how he had attempted to plant a bomb inside the church.

Joshua said his church was being attacked to scare away members.

“This environment at Ikotun Egbe, we have never witnessed an accident of a building collapse. This is a very stable terrain. I have been here for the past 30 years. I am pregnant with words, but we have left the security agencies to do their job. Let us believe and educate our people and be alive.”

Assuring his congregation that God would bring the perpetrators of the attack to book, Joshua said that the decision of the insurgents to focus on his church might be the end of the Boko Haram’s activities in the country.

He said,“I know you will ask why the church? It is because of the spiritual blessings that God has bestowed upon us. A big head wears a large hat.

“Don’t forget about the Ebola issue too, it was God that rescued the church. Probably they would have dropped an Ebola patient inside the church, so that they would said, ‘there is an Ebola patient in the church, don’t go there.’

“They are trying to scare you from coming to church. Don’t be scared, you are not the target, I’m the target. I know my time has not yet come. I have not yet finished my job.

“I want to assure you that our God will get back at them and you will know when he gets back to them. May be this would be the end of the whole thing.”

Meanwhile, the death toll had officially risen to 44, while 130 people were said to have been rescued alive.

The National Emergency Management Agency on Sunday said that 44 dead bodies had been recovered, while 130 people trapped in the collapsed Synagogue building had so far been rescued.

The Public Relations Officer of NEMA, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed this via a text message to our correspondents.

Farinloye, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria that 80 per cent of people rescued from the collapse building were women.

He said that two female children, aged four and eight years, were among those rescued from the building.
Sports / Oguns Lays Into Keshi by thickmass: 11:56am On Sep 15, 2014
Former Nigerian goalkeeper Segun Oguns has said that Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi's second coming to the side will be a huge failure unless the former Togo coach drops his ego.

Keshi was temporarily re-engaged by the sports minister, Tammy Danagogo, to oversee Nigeria's double Afcon header against Congo and South Africa while discussion on a permanent renewal of his contract continues with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The Eagles have just a point to show in the two Afcon matches against less fancied group opponents, Congo and South Africa.

Oguns stated that the former Nigerian captain and defender is still regrettably carrying on with his coaching assignment in the same manner that was characteristic of his playing days.

"Keshi still treats his Super Eagles' job, assistants, players and employer, the NFF, the same manner he treated his colleagues in his playing days. He is arrogant, domineering and overbearing.

"No coach in the modern world succeeds with any of such outdated and slavish characteristics.

"Keshi must come down from his ego to play the role of a father to the assistants and players, he must listen to all and see them as partners not as mere tools that could be used and discarded at will.

"Unless he changes his attitude he'll be a huge failure if he is eventually re-engaged by the NFF.

"The sign of the failure to come is already there for everyone to see or how do you explain the difficult position we have found ourselves on the Afcon group table where we are placed third on one point behind Congo and South Africa on six and four points respectively after two rounds of matches," said the former Sunshine Stars goalkeeper coach to supersport.com.

Though the former Nigerian shot-stopper is hopeful that the Eagles may qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, he insisted that the dream will only be possible if Keshi decides to use the best legs at all times for the remaining qualifying matches.

"We're in a difficult position qualifying for the Nations Cup in Morocco but it's not a hopeless situation.

"It depends on our attitude to games as well as whether Keshi has learnt to prosecute future matches with the best legs irrespective of the fact that the faces are likeable or not.

"The truth is that Keshi has not used the best players in the past and that partly explains the position we have found ourselves in at the moment," said Oguns.

Nigeria's next Afcon double header will be against Sudan in October while the last matches against South Africa and Congo Brazzaville will be held in November.

Religion / Will Thomas Ever Be Remembered For His Bravery? by thickmass: 2:11pm On Aug 21, 2014
When Jesus wanted to return to Judea, knowing that He would probably be murdered there, Thomas said to the others, "let us also go, that we might die with Him". But Thomas was not remembered for his bravery. His claim to fame came later when he refused to acknowledge the resurrection of Jesus. He could not wrap his mind around it. The story goes, that he needed to touch Jesus' wounds to be convinced.
