NO INDIGENOUS NIGERIAN DRONE IN ACTION: DRONE IN ACTION FOREIGN.......LOCAL PRODUCE IS INFACT IS AEROSTAR Nigeria joins a dubious club of the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Pakistan, and Iraq who have all used armed drones in modern war. Much of Nigeria's drone arsenal are Israeli-made Aerostar UAVs, which are unarmed. Nigeria also has its own, locally-made drones that strongly resemble these Aerostars, and are likely also only surveillance tools. Instead, for the strike it looks like the drone was a Chinese CH-3. The CH-3 is an armed adaption of earlier Chinese reconnaissance drones, and has been in Nigeria's inventory since at least 2014. In the video released of the attack, there's a large blast, and the Nigerian Air Force claims they hit a logistics base belonging to Boko Haram, possibly an ammunition storehouse. Nigeria, like Iraq, appears to buy their armed drones from China. http://www.popsci.com.au/robots/drones/watch-nigerias-first-confirmed-drone-strike-against-boko-haram,414698 |
NIGERIAN UAV CRASHES: As the brutal Boko Haram insurgency has entered its 7th year in Nigeria, the relationship between the government and China has deepened. In many ways it is a match of needs. The Nigerian military has a pressing need for counter-insurgency (COIN) equipment, such as drones, MRAP vehicles and smart bombs (many of which the US has been unwilling to provide the government due to human rights concerns). China is seeking to be a first tier exporter of such modern military systems as well as has a massive domestic demand for oil. http://www.popsci.com/did-armed-chinese-made-drone-just-crash-nigeria

NIGERIAN SOLDIERS ILL DISCIPLINE A soldier, simply identified by his name tag as Emmanuel B.J., on Wednesday battered a commercial bus driver, Mr. Moshood Olaniyi, at the Ojodu-Berger Motor Park in Lagos State for allegedly sneering at him. The soldier initially pounced on Olaniyi and thrashed him with horse whip before he used his fists to punch him. PUNCH Metro learnt that Emmanuel ignored pleas by passersby and food vendors at the park. Instead, he removed the vehicle’s key from the ignition and dragged Olaniyi down from the bus and battered him the more. The soldier held Olaniyi’s waistband and threatened to kill the driver boasting that nobody would query him if he killed the driver. When the crowd urged the soldier to state the driver’s offence, Emmanuel B.J. slapped Olaniyi again for more than 12 times. He said, “Who does he think he is? I will kill him and nobody will query me. I have killed many people who are older than this idiot (Olaniyi) in the past and nobody queried me for that. “The idiot attempted to hit me while reversing his vehicle and when I asked him why, he just sneered at me. If at all he is older than me, I don’t care. I will do to him what he will never forget for the rest of his life.” Emmanuel dragged Olaniyi to the park of commercial motorcycle operators, a distance of about 50 metres, before he released him after much pleading that lasted for about 45 minutes by eyewitnesses and other motorists. Olaniyi was later advised to seek medical attention due to the extent of the assault. Olaniyi, who could hardly open his mouth to talk because of his swollen lips after the soldier released him, denied that he sneered at the soldier. He said he was reversing his vehicle when the soldier suddenly pounced on him. One of the witnesses, who identified himself simply as Festus, said the beating was too much, adding that he did not expect that Olaniyi could still stand on his feet after the soldier released him. Festus said it was the beating that drew his attention from where he was fixing some mechanical faults in his vehicle. He said, “I did not know the cause of the disagreement between Olaniyi and the soldier, but from what I saw, Olaniyi was sitting in his vehicle when the soldier started beating him. I didn’t know whether Olaniyi sneered at the soldier or not.” A bread seller at the motor park, who preferred to be addressed as Ajoke, said she witnessed the assault from the beginning to the end. Ajoke said she joined other passersby to beg the soldier to let Olaniyi go when it appeared that he was not ready to stop the beating. Reacting to the alleged assault, the spokesperson for 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Lagos, Col. Kingsley Samuel, told our correspondent that he had yet to confirm the identity of the soldier, but promised to investigate the assault. He said, “We don’t know the identity of the soldier. Lagos is a big community; anybody can put on army uniform and impersonate being a soldier. We have had cases of impersonation before, but if any personnel of the organisation I work with commits a crime of that nature, the person will be dealt with. “We have to find out if Emmanuel is a genuine soldier who is not impersonating. This is one of the things we will investigate. And if he is a soldier, we will find out the unit he belongs to. But I assure you that we will do our investigation.” www.punchng.com/soldier-batters-bus-driver-for-sneering-at-him/ |
SOLDIERS DEMAND THEIR BONUSES There was tension at the 55 Battalion Bonny Camp, Lagos on Thursday following the grumbling by 200 soldiers over the alleged non-payment of their three months mission allowances. Our correspondents reliably gathered that the 200 soldiers were part of the 800 troops that just returned from Darfur, Sudan where they had gone to for a peace keeping operation. The soldiers after their return, it was learnt, were redeployed again to the North-East to join the battle against insurgents. The contingent is said to be led by Lt. Col. H. Dasuki, who unconfirmed sources said, is related to the immediate former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.). They are expected to leave Lagos for Maiduguri on Friday (today). But our one of our correspondents gathered that the soldiers said they would not proceed to Maiduguri except their allowances for the Sudan operation were paid. This, they argued, would enable them to leave money behind for their families. The issue had not been resolved as of the time of filling the report. A military source said such posting without payment of allowances was not acceptable to the military high command as it was contrary to a directive from the Defence headquarters. Reacting to the subtle protest, the Public Relations Officer of the 81 Division, Lt. Col. Kingsley Samuel, said that the soldiers who returned from foreign mission in Sudan were not involved in such a protest. He said that that there was no grumbling whatsoever in the Bonny Camp. He said, “There is nothing like grumbling in that battalion. It is not true.” www.punchng.com/soldiers-demand-allowance-maiduguri-posting |
NIGER DELTA MILITIA BACK IN ACTION WARRI—NIGER Delta Avengers, the militant group which claimed responsibility for blowing up the Forcados Terminal Pipeline in Delta State, recently, has served notice of attacks on more oil installations in the region until the Federal Government addresses its grievances. The group vowed: “Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, Forcados terminal is our latest casualty. There are many more to follow in the days and weeks ahead.” The group, in a statement obtained in Warri, said that it was prepared to reduce Nigeria’s daily oil production and supply to zero barrel if its agitation was ignored. “The same factor that brought about the Niger Delta arms struggle is fast resurfacing as the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is poised to exterminate Niger Delta people for being benevolent enough to allow the nation’s mono-economy thrive on our oil. “We are being oppressed, pushed to the wall on various fronts, which is why we have picked up the challenge to be the outlaws this government will have to contend with till daily production of oil is reduced to zero in the Niger Delta, so government can use the oil from the North to run Nigeria’s mono-economy. “We believe that Nigeria can practice true federalism where our resources will be controlled by us and used for our own good. The reverse is the case today, where the goose that lays the golden egg is killed along with the egg,” they said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/militants-threaten-blow-up-of-more-oil-installations/ |
WHERE IS THE RULE OF LAW IN NIGERIA Troops stormed the railway police station, Umuahia in the Abia State capital monday and whisked away the divisional police officer (DPO) and another policemen after raining blows on them following the arrest of an army captain for parking his bus at an unauthorised place close to the station. Trouble started at about 11 am when the DPO, who just assumed duty last Thursday was driving to his office and saw a bus parked close to the station and alighted from his jeep. As he was fuming, the owner of the bus emerged and opted to remove his vehicle but the DPO rejected all entreaties and ordered his men to arrest him. It was then that the bus owner identified himself as an army captain (in mufti), a revelation that obviously compounded his case, as the DPO got angrier. “If you are any army captain how many wars have you fought? I have fought in three Boko Haram states and you are resisting my arrest order,” the DPO barked out. The altercation drew a large crowd of onlookers as two police officers struggled to drag the resisting army officer to the police station to no avail. As the melee continued, the soldier’s clothes were torn in the process. However, the crowd, which was obviously enjoying the altercation, scampered to safety when one of the policemen bearing a firearm fired a shot into the air to subdue the army officer. At this point, shop owners hurriedly started closing up to avoid stray bullets. Indeed the railway policemen went berserk and pounced on shop owners, impounded the army officer’s car, and gave him the beating of his life. When the army officer eventually agreed to enter the police station, a lady who knew him and had pleaded with the policemen to let him go was seen making a phone call which turned out to be an S.O.S to his colleagues in the army. One by one army patrol vans arrived at the scene of the melee from different directions. The first patrol van arrived with four soldiers, who made straight for the police station and were seen remonstrating with the DPO. But by the time the third and fourth patrol vans arrived, more troops poured into the scene increasing their number to 20. The atmosphere was intensely charged, following which the ordeal of the policemen started. The army officers descended on the DPO and his junior colleagues beating them black and blue before bundling them into vans and drove away to an unknown destination. The only policeman left in the station had resisted every effort by some of the soldiers to disarm him. Even when he was beaten up, he still held on to his firearm. Less than five minutes after the army made away with the arrested policemen, three police patrol vans from the Central Police Station (CPS), Umuahia, arrived at the scene but it was too late to save their colleagues. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/army-sacks-railway-police-station-umuahia/232725/ |
WHILE NIGERIA REACHES 5000 MW OF ELECTRICITY....SOUTH AFRICA CELEBRATE 35 000MW Eskom this week achieved over 35‚000MW in generation capacity for the first time in over a year and a half. “The last time we hit 35‚000 MW was on September 16‚ 2014‚” the electricity parastatal said on Saturday. “On Wednesday‚ we reached up to 35‚819MW capacity available on the system with total unplanned outages of 4‚479MW and planned outages of 3‚612MW‚” it added. It said that improved plant performance and more effective maintenance had resulted in lower unplanned outages and that planned maintenance was being executed more efficiently. “The generation team has also focused on clearing our load losses and plant breakdowns.” The country’s power system has been stable since August 2015‚ resulting in over six months of no load shedding. “Our prognosis is that there will be no load shedding for summer‚ autumn and going into winter‚” Eskom said. http://www.timeslive.co.za/local/2016/02/27/Eskom-reaches-35‚000MW-generating-capacity |
TRIBAL WARS RANGING IN NIGERIA Eyewitness accounts say that at least four people have died, while security operatives are battling to get the violence under control. Huge plumes of smoke can been seen bellowing from a distance as houses have been set ablaze. Residents of the area have remained indoors for fear of being attacked. No one has been able to give reasons for the crisis as at the time of this report. The Lagos State Government has closed down the markets in the area temporarily, and has vowed to deal with miscreants and law breakers. The State Government is also appealing to parents to ensure that their wards are law abiding. - Online Reporter. o fewer than three persons are feared dead and several cars set ablaze as Hausa and Yoruba traders clashed at the popular Mile 12 Market in Lagos State. It was gathered that the foundation for the clash was laid on Tuesday after a Hausa commercial bike rider knocked down a woman. The bike rider was told to take the woman to the hospital, but the rider and his colleagues refused. They insisted that the motorbike association, which collects tolls from them, should take care of the woman. There was heated argument, which led to a fight. The fighting continued all through Wednesday till Thursday (today) when some thugs, believed to be of Yoruba origin, invaded the market and started attacking the Hausas. They burnt seven cars and killed three Hausa traders. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni; the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, Olatunji Disu; the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operation, Lagos State Police Command; and teams of policemen were still at the scene as at the time of filing the report. - Online Reporter Source http://www.viviangist.com/yoruba-vs-hausa-fight-in-mile-12-lagos-details-and-graphic-photos |
GREAT ACHIEVEMENT BY NIGERIAN ELECTRICITY COMAPNY The power generattion profile peaked at 5,074MW early February, before it started cascading. The current height, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), was due to the completion of maintenance on the gas pipeline to the generating stations. In a statement signed by The Asst. General Manager (Public Affairs), SO/MO, TCN, Clement Ezeolisah: “Power generation has started improving and is now over 4200MW on daily average,” He attributed the recent outages to scheduled maintenance programme on the pipelines supplying gas to the generating stations. Electricity consumers had in recent times been groanning under epileptic power supply, which has drastically impacted on domestic and commercial activities. The new development may have however raised hopes of improved power supply in the country, if other factors should work in tandem with the administration’s plan for lower outages. Meanwhile, other industry sources hinted that the tariff intrigues are brewing concerns around the gas producing companies, which are worried that the failure to implement the Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO 2015) might make the electricity business less viable. According to the sources, if the new tariff fails to sail through, it would leave the industry with non-cost reflective tariff, which might trigger the debt profile of the distribution companies and transmission companies. The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Anthony Akah, had lamented incidents of vandalism that led to reduction in peak power supply through the national grid from over 5,000MW attained early February. Akah therefore solicited support of members of the public and the council to collaborate with the service providers and security agencies in ensuring security of electrical installations. He said that the commission would soon compel electricity distribution companies to publish their meter deployment schedules, so as to ensure adherence to the meter roll out plan, contained in the performance agreement signed with government by the utility firms. About nine power generating stations across the country were either completely or partly affected by the gas supply challenges, forcing the national grid to shut-in about 2044Mega Watts (MW) of electricity. Affected stations included Olorunshogo National Integrated Power Plant (NIPP) was completely shutting-in 600MW; Sapele NIPP shuts-in112.5 MW; Omotosho (Gas), 190MW; Geregu NIPP, 145MW; Delta, 340MW; Omotosho NIPP120MW; Egbin 440MW; Olorunshogo (Gas) 38MW due to gas shortage; while Odukpani was shutting-in 59.1MW due to water constraints. http://tapread.net/2016/03/04/power-generation-rallies-to-4200mw/ |

Denel’s Casspir now comes with firepower options That it can now be fitted with 81mm mortar systems‚ anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons makes the Casspir the “most cost-effective vehicle in its class in the world”. That’s according to arms manufacturer Denel‚ which on Monday said the “versatility and range of Denel’s Casspir mine-protected vehicles has been expanded to accommodate the firepower requirements of different clients”. “This will attract the interest of defence clients looking for a versatile and cost-effective family of mine-resistant vehicles.” And‚ not only can “clients…select the type and range of firepower required to be fitted‚ the new variants of the Casspi 2000 can be fitted with the Plofadder mine-clearing system. Ashley Williams‚ general manager of Mechem – Denel’s mine-clearing division – said this is a reponse to “opportunities in defence markets where clients need a single platform with a number of variants to meet operational requirements”. Denel said it “is now able to produce a tailor-made Casspir according to the requirements of the client”‚ by fiiting “different modules…onto the standard platform system and then modified according to client specifications”. “Our clients can now use the same family of vehicles that offer superior levels of protection and mobility‚ but in different roles‚” said Williams. http://www.timeslive.co.za/local/2016/02/29/Denel’s-Casspir-now-comes-with-firepower-options |
The Nigerian government is planning to cut its defence budget after a decade of increases, but security continues to receive the most funding as the Boko Haram insurgency continues and the armed forces continue to expand. Nigeria’s defence budget will drop from N364.2 billion ($2.3 billion) last year to N340.3 billion ($2.1 billion) in 2014 according to the Nigerian Budget Office – a 6.5% reduction in funding. Furthermore, the proposed budget drops defence from 12.1% of overall government spending to 7.8% between 2013 and 2014, according to IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly. Under the proposed 2014 budget, the Nigerian Army will receive N132.7 billion ($830 million), the Navy N70.1 billion ($440 million) and the Air Force N73.2 billion ($460 million). Another N64.3 billion ($400 million) will be allocated across the board, including for missions and deployments. The Nigerian Navy has been allocated N5.2 billion ($32 million) for the two new offshore patrol vessels being procured from China while the Nigerian Army was allocated N100 million ($600 000) for the ongoing production of armoured personnel carriers by the Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (this almost certainly refers to the locally produced Igirigi). The Nigerian Air Force has been allocated N1.8 billion ($11.2 million) for the acquisition of six Mi-35M attack helicopters. In addition, N1.3 million ($8 000) has been allocated for the reactivation of L-39ZA jet trainers, many of which are grounded. The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) has been allocated N1.9 billion ($11.9 million) for 2014, including N450 million ($2.8 million) for the installation, procurement and operation of a new 7.62x39 mm ammunition production line as Nigeria seeks to grow its domestic defence industry. In total, N845 billion ($5.29 billion) was provided for recurrent and service-wide votes for the security sector, including the armed forces (N306 billion/$1.92 billion), police (N286 billion/$1.79 billion), National Security Advisor’s office (N67 billion/$420 million) and paramilitary services. In total, the security cluster received the lion’s share of the national budget, followed by education. Once approved, the 2014 defence budget will mark the first decrease in defence spending since around 2006, as between 2007 and 2013 Nigerian defence expenditure grew by 20.6%, according to IHS Jane’s, which points out the new budget will result in a 12.7% reduction of spending in real terms. |
Buhari to cut Nigeria’s foreign missions President Muhammadu Buhari said Tuesday in Abuja that his administration would undertake a review of Nigerian foreign missions to determine those that are really essential. Speaking after being briefed by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bulus Lolo, President Buhari said a presidential committee would soon be established to carry out the review. The president said the review would determine the number of essential missions Nigeria needs to maintain abroad so that appropriate standards and quality can be maintained. Nigeria currently has 119 foreign missions abroad, the permanent secretary said. The country will spend N34billion to run the missions in 2015. The president said there was no point in Nigeria operating missions all over the world “with dilapidated facilities and demoralized staff”, when the need for some of the missions was questionable. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/189667-breaking-buhari-moves-to-close-unessential-nigerian-foreign-missions.html |
NIGERIA IS SUFFERING CASH CRUNCH AND CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY ITS TEACHERS AND PRESIDENT BUHARI ON HIS WAY TO CHINA TO ASK FOR BAIL OUT When Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in May vowing to mend the economy, fight terrorism and end corruption, Kola Karim was upbeat. Oil prices had sunk, but Buhari’s arrival made him believe his company still had a chance to prosper in Africa’s biggest crude producer. Shoreline Group, the third-biggest Nigerian oil and gas producer, decided to forge ahead with a $500 million Eurobond to expand drilling operations. Then prices fell below $50 per barrel last year. The bond sale was suspended. One hope was to rely on income from Shoreline’s construction and power-generation businesses. Except that the central bank’s refusal to devalue the currency meant Nigeria was starved of foreign exchange, crimping business operations. Now, with prices hovering around $30 a barrel, Shoreline plans to cut 35 percent of its nearly 2,000 staff. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-02-17/nigeria-faces-double-whammy-as-buhari-fails-to-manage-oil-rout

SANDF BOMB DISPOSAL MATERIAL Husky VMMD (Vehicle Mounted Mine Detector) or, as it was previously known, the Chubby system, is part of a mine-removal system developed by DCD-Dorbyl Rolling Stock Division which are based on the East Rand in Gauteng, South Africa. The system was developed in the 1970s for the South African Defence Force to clear military convoy routes of mines in Namibia and Angola. The VMMD system consists of two Husky vehicles. The first one acts as a Mine Detection Vehicle (MDV). In the past this vehicle was called a Meerkat and wasn't a 4x4. The second Husky in the system tows a set of three Duisendpoots and is known as a towing /mine detection vehicle (T/MDV) The latest version of the Husky, the 2G, has high sensitivity low metal content detectors, ground penetrating radar, powerful air blowers and a robotic arm. This extra equipment has caused the design of Husky to evolve to take a second crew member. The Husky 2G was voted one of the US Army's Top 10 most innovative advances in Army technology

@AUGUSTUS... There are two main ways of getting ahead. Do everything you can to improve your own situation or try and cut others down to come out with a stronger competitive advantage. The second way is obviously the loser way to get ahead. who employs this method like @AUGUSTUS, will likely always be dissatisfied with what they have because they will be constantly envious of others.
