The Denel Stryker LAV III 105 mm howitzer can directly fire three shells through the same hole.

This remarkable degree of accuracy was achieved when the latest version of DLS’s 105mm Stryker was recently tested at the Alkantpan testing range in the Northern Cape. The Stryker LAV III LSPH (Light Self-propelled Howitzer) differs from previous versions in that it can now be serviced by a crew rather than being remotely fired.

Stephan Burger the CEO of Denel Land Systems (DLS) says the firing tests were witnessed by members of the SA Defence community. The tests underline the world-class characteristics of the gun and the quality of the engineering team responsible for its development, says Burger.

The 105-mm Stryker is a joint project between DLS, General Dynamic Systems and Rheinmetall Denel Munitions – another subsidiary of Denel, South Africa’s largest manufacturer of defence products.
Research and Development work on the system started in the 1990’s when a Denel/Armscor project team was set the task to produce 155mm, 39 calibre Artillery range, accuracy and lethality from a 105mm system. The end product was an artillery piece with the weight of a 105mm howitzer, but the range and terminal performance of a 155mm System -- with better precision.

LIW, a division of Denel, South-Africa, completed development work and test firing on their latest version of the G5 155mm towed gun system in 2003. In line with its standard artillery gun nomenclature, this version has been named the G5-52, while the truck mounted version will in future be known as the T5-52.

The biggest change is the addition of a burst loader and a complete projectile handling system. This system comprises an electrically-driven chain rammer which loads both the projectile and the charge in the gun barrel, a projectile magazine which can hold 6 projectiles in 2 layers, and a small crane which can transfer 3 projectiles at a time from a ground pile to the projectile magazine.

This latest development is in line with the South African National Defence force and other potential buyers' requirement for more ergonomic gun designs, and which consider the 47kg 155mm projectile too heavy to be handled by one person during the process of loading. The new system requires no man handling of projectiles. Only the charge, much lighter at 17kg, has to be placed manually on the loading tray, from where it is automatically pushed into the barrel chamber.

A unique feature of the system is that a firing mission can be started with one round in the barrel, one on the loading tray, 6 in the magazine and 3 on the crane. A total of 11 rounds can therefore be fired without any manipulation of ammunition, which is a world first for a towed gun system.

A firing rate of 6 rounds per minute can easily be achieved with the top charge at all elevations. With the fully integrated command system and automatic laying system, MRSI (multiple round simultaneous impact) missions can be conducted with minimum operator assistance.

The T5-52 truck mounted gun-howitzer was developed by Denel Land Systems. First prototype of this artillery system was revealed in 2002. It is a South African counterpart to the French Caesar truck-mounted howitzer, developed to meet the potential requirements of India. Development of this artillery system is completed, however there were no confirmed sales.

The T5 was previously dubbed the Condor and was armed with a 155-mm / L45 weapon. The second model, the T5-52, utilizes the G5-2000 towed howitzer top carriage. This artillery system is compatible with standard NATO 155-mm ammunition. Projectiles are fed automatically onto the rammer tray from the magazine. Charge loading is semi-automatic.

Maximum range of fire is 42.5 km with rocket assisted projectile and 55 km with V-LAP or velocity enhanced projectile, developed by Denel. The T5-52 is capable of MRSI or multiple round simultaneous impact firing. It can fire up to six rounds to hit the target simultaneously. This artillery system can fire in 360° arc, however it has to return to the 80° arc to simplify the loading process. Normally the T5-52 fires backward in relation to the vehicle. This artillery system fires forward only in case of emergency. Vehicle also has a direct firing capability.

The T5-52 has an operating crew of four and additional four crew members to prepare and supply the ammunition. A crew of four can bring the gun into or out of action within 60 seconds.

The T5-52 is mounted on the modified 8x8 Tatra T815 WN truck chassis. This truck is manufactured in India under license. Vehicle is powered by a turbocharged diesel engine, developing 355 hp. To provide a more stable firing platform, this truck has three stabilizer blades. Cab of this artillery system is unarmored, however protection against 5.56-mm rounds can be fitted as an option.

The GBU-12 Paveway II is an American guidance kit, turning a Mk 82 500-pound general-purpose bomb into a laser-guided air-to-ground "smart" bomb. The kit consists of a nose-mounted laser seeker and tail fins for guidance and control.

A high degree of accuracy is achieved when an operator (either airborne or ground-based) illuminates a target with a laser designator. The bomb is then guided to a spot of laser energy reflected from the target. When a target is illuminated by a laser, the guidance fins react to signals from the laser seeker in the nose and steers the weapon to the target. Wings on the tail provides lift and the aerodynamic stability necessary for in-flight maneuvering.

The SAAF has already ordered the Rafael/Zeiss Litening III laser designation pod (LDP) for us eon the Gripen C single-seat and D dual-seat fighters.

The Gripen has already been cleared to use the Litening III with the GBU-12 Paveway II laser guided bomb. This provides Gripens with a full night-attack/all-weather precision guided munition (PGM) capability.

According to Raytheon's fact sheet for the Paveway 2, 99 deliveries of guided munitions will yield a circular error probable (CEP) of only 3.6 feet, versus a CEP of 310 feet for 99 unguided bombs dropped under similar conditions.

UNBELIVIABLE THAT THIS MASSACRE ONLY HAPPENED IN NOV 2015....WHEN PRESIDENT BUHARI WAS TELLING THE WORLD THAT BOKO HARAM IS TECHNICALLY DEFEATED (WHAT EVER THE TERM MEANS)

Nigerian Online Newspaper, Premium Times had reported that at least 105 soldiers attached to the 157 battalion went missing after they came under intense attack from Boko Haram insurgents in Gudunbali, Borno State, on Wednesday morning.

Nigeria has a new government, but Boko Haram is deadlier than ever and in their attempt to cover up the setback suffered by its troops in a recent battle with the extremist Boko Haram sect and discredit PREMIUM TIMES exclusive report on the matter, senior officials of the Nigerian Army have made at least four contradictory statements in the last 24 hours.

But reliable military insiders confided that the terrorists captured a T-72 tank as well as several artillery weapons from the unit. A Nigerian soldier who spoke anonymously to BBC Hausa said that they were tired of 'dying like fowl'.

An international report monitored by Elombah.com reveals that Boko Haram has overtaken Isis as the world’s most deadly terrorist organisation.

@AUGUSTUS AND YOUR FELLOW TRAVELLERS.....LEARN THAT THE HELMET MOUNTED SIGHTS WHICH YOUR TINY LITTLE AIRFORCE WEARS WERE FIRST INVENTED BY SOUTH AFRICA....SURELY THE MUMU'S ARE NOW SHOCKED.....BRING YOUR TECHNOLOGY

A helmet-mounted display (HMD) is a device used in some modern aircraft, especially combat aircraft. HMDs project information similar to that of head-up displays (HUD) on an aircrew’s visor or reticle, thereby allowing them to obtain situation awareness and/or cue weapons systems to the direction his head is pointing. Applications which allow cuing of weapon systems are referred to as helmet-mounted sight and display (HMSD) or helmet-mounted sights (HMS). These devices were created first by South Africa, then the Soviet Union and followed by the United States.

PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN

South Africa guided weapons company Kentron has unveiled its 300km (180mi) range Torgos cruise missile for the first time at Dubai 2000.

The new missile is a development of the existing family of precision guided weapons from Kentron, a division of the Denel Group.

"Torgos has been designed with low mass, coupled with stealthy characteristics and high manoeuvrability," says Denel spokesman Sam Basch. "For its primary role as a multi-purpose, long-range precision strike weapon, Torgos is designed to neutralise hardened targets of high strategic value.

"Its cruciform tail control makes it particularly manoeuvrable in the terminal phase of attack, which also enables Torgos to hit moving targets of opportunity."

Kentron has been involved in the development of guided weapons and missiles since the early 1970s. Its Raptor television guided glide bomb was used operationally during the 1980s. A series of variants have since been developed from this weapon for a number of customers.

"Torgos is a natural evolution from Kentron's MUPSOW (Multi-Purpose Stand-Off Weapon) advanced technology demonstrator programme," says Basch. "The latter's primary role is that of a sub-munition dispensing system, for day/night precision strike operations over long range, to neutralise targets such as airfields, air defence systems, strategic installations and command-and-control centres."

The Torgos has two modes of operation: Man-in-the-loop (MITL) through a dedicated communications link allows the pilot to direct the weapon to its target; and automatic target recognition (ATR) which uses the latest generation of thermal imagers to identify targets for attack.

Denel says the weapon, which weighs less than 1,000kg (2,200lb), has a miss distance better than 2m (6ft) and can be carried by Dassault Mirage 2000, Saab JAS-39A Gripen and Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter aircraft.

"We are offering the Torgos to prospective joint venture partners, with both MTL and autonomous ATR capability," says Basch. "The Raptor range, which is still in series production, along with the MUPSOW and Torgos, offers prospective clients a family of stand-off weapon systems to fulfil their requirements.

SANDF MISSILE RAPTOR.......WHICH AFRICAN COUNTRY HAS INVENTED ITS OWN MISSILE

Description:
Kentron has been involved in the development of guided weapons and missiles since the 1970s. The Raptor glide bomb was the first of these to go into service, with the H1 effectively being a technology testbed.
It was used operationally in the final phase of South African involvement in Angola. Company officials are coy, but reports say the Raptor was used to successfully interdict the lone bridge crossing the Cuito Cuanavale River near the town with the same name. It has not been confirmed that this weapon was previously called H-2.

The Raptor is a modular system consisting of the glide bomb, the communications pod, pylons and control equipment. The bomb can glide to targets at ranges in excess of 60 kilometres, but can be controlled at ranges of up to 250km, when the communications pod is fitted to a second aircraft. The weapon was integrated on the Buccaneer and the Mirage F1AZ, in which pilot used a small joystick control to steer the H2 to its target.

In later versions, navigation can be autonomous, by waypoint or by using GPS-assisted inertial navigation. The weapon is usually fitted with a passive TV seeker. It can be upgraded to include an imaging infra red or radar seeker. The weapon is accurate to within 3m CEP. In SAAF service it is either fitted with a fragmentation or penetration warhead.

The weapon was first used operationaly against the bridge at Cuito Canavale during Operations Modular/Hooper. Buccaneer 414 dropped the first H2 "Smart"-Bomb to be used operationally by the SAAF during an attack on the Cuito bridge in Southern Angola on 12 December 1987. Unfortunately the H2 failed to destroy its target but a second attack on 3 January 1988 proved more successful.

At approximately 05h45Z on 3 January 1988, a formation of Buccaneers departed from Air Force Base Grootfontein armed with the glide ‘smart-bomb' commonly referred to as "H-2 and HANTO", the first attempt of the day to destroy the Cuito Cuanavale Bridge was aborted.
The second attempt saw the aircraft take-off at 09h40Z and the FAPA (Angolan Air Force) launched a flight of MiG-23's to intercept (the intercept aircraft never reached the Buccaneer formation ) and Buccaneer successfully launched ‘H2' and destroyed the Bridge at 10h31Z.
24 Squadron operated two Impala Mk Is as weapons systems trainers for the system used by the Buccaneers. The two Impalas had modified rear cockpits, with the joystick remove. The aircraft carried electronics pods, one each side, on the hard points.
