PhonesHow Hackers Sneak Into Phones Even When The Internet Connection Is Off by thomasina(op): 4:38pm On Jan 10, 2015
Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology are now investigating how hackers may
be able to sneak into your laptop or smartphone just by analysing the low-power
electronic signals your device emits even when it is not connected to the Internet so they
can help hardware and software designers develop strategies to plug them.
By studying emissions from multiple computers, the researchers have developed a metric
for measuring the strength of the leaks – known technically as “side-channel signal” – to
help prioritise security efforts.

“People are focused on security for the Internet and on the wireless communication side,
but we are concerned with what can be learned from your computer without it intentionally
sending anything. Even if you have the Internet connection disabled, you are still
emanating information that somebody could use to attack your computer or smartphone,”
said Alenka Zajic, an assistant professor in Georgia Tech’s School of Electrical and
Computer Engineering.

As a demonstration, Zajic typed a simulated password on one laptop that was not
connected to the Internet. On the other side of a wall, a colleague using another
disconnected laptop read the password as it was being typed by intercepting side-channel
signals produced by the first laptop’s keyboard software, which had been modified to
make the characters easier to identify.

GamingTop Video Games To Watch Out For In 2015 by thomasina(op): 3:59pm On Jan 10, 2015
The gaming line-up for 2015 includes a pair of original Victorian-inspired tales
(“Bloodborne,” ”The Order: 1886″), the return of two long- gone, out-of-this-world gaming
franchises (“Star Wars: Battlefront,” ”Star Fox”) and an expedition into the open- world
genre for a long-running stealth series (“Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain”).
Here’s a glimpse of some of 2015’s most-anticipated games:

– “Batman: Arkham Knight” (for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC; June 2):
After three editions of stomping, gliding and grappling through a virtual Gotham, Batman
has keys to the Batmobile in Rocksteady Studios’ Dark Knight Finale. This time, besides
old-school baddies like Penguin and Scarecrow, Batman is facing off against a new
menace called Arkham Knight.

CelebritiesLegend Mohammed Ali Discharged From Hospital by thomasina(op): 4:46pm On Jan 07, 2015
A family spokesman for
Muhammad Ali says the
boxing great has been
released from a hospital after
recovering from a severe
urinary tract infection.
Ali spokesman Bob Gunnell
says the three-time world
heavyweight champion is back
home after being released
from an undisclosed hospital
Tuesday night. Ali has been
waging a battle with
Parkinson’s disease for years.
Ali was hospitalized in
December with what was
initially believed to be a mild
case of pneumonia. But
Gunnell says doctors later
determined that the 72-year-
old Ali was suffering from a
severe urinary tract infection
and not pneumonia.
Gunnell says Ali has fully
recovered and is looking
forward to celebrating his
birthday on Jan. 17 with family
and friends.

Science/TechnologyAstronomers Discover 8 New Planets That May Support Life by thomasina(op): 3:45pm On Jan 07, 2015
In what appears to be a major
discovery, astronomers have
found 8 new planets that may
be capable of supporting life,
including two most Earth-like
alien worlds yet found.
Astronomers announced that
they have found 8 new
planets in the “Goldilocks”
zone of their stars, orbiting at
a distance where liquid water
can exist on the planet’s
surface.
“Most of these planets have a
good chance of being rocky,
like Earth,” said lead author
Guillermo Torres of the
Harvard-Smithsonian Centre
for Astrophysics (CfA).
The 8 new worlds confirmed
by NASA’s venerable Kepler
space telescope boost the
number of Kepler’s confirmed
planets to over a thousand.
The 2 most Earth-like planets
of the group are Kepler-438b
and Kepler-442b. Both orbit
red dwarf stars that are
smaller and cooler than our
Sun.
Kepler-438b circles its star
every 35 days, while
Kepler-442b completes one
orbit every 112 days. With a
diameter just 12 per cent
bigger than Earth,
Kepler-438b has a 70-per cent
chance of being rocky,
according to the team’s
calculations.
Kepler-442b is about one-third
larger than Earth, but still has
a 60-per cent chance of being
rocky. To be in the habitable
zone, an exoplanet must
receive about as much
sunlight as Earth. Too much,
and any water would boil away
as steam. Too little, and water
will freeze solid.
“For our calculations we chose
to adopt the broadest possible
limits that can plausibly lead
to suitable conditions for life,”
said Torres.
Kepler-438b receives about 40
per cent more light than
Earth. In comparison, Venus
gets twice as much solar
radiation as Earth. As a result,
the team calculates it has a 70
per cent likelihood of being in
the habitable zone of its star.
Kepler-442b get about two-
thirds as much light as Earth.
The scientists give it a 97
percent chance of being in the
habitable zone.
“We don’t know for sure
whether any of the planets in
our sample are truly habitable.
All we can say is that they’re
promising candidates,” said
second author David Kipping
of the CfA.
