Nine time champion Rafael Nadal rocked the French Open on Friday when he pulled out with a left wrist injury as Andy Murray and defending champion Stan Wawrinka moved closer to a semi-final showdown.


Nadal, 29, said he had been playing with an anesthetic injection in the wrist in the first two rounds and that MRI scans had shown that the injury to the tendon was getting worse.

“It’s not broken, but if I continue to play it will be 100 percent broken in a few days,” said an emotional Nadal, the fourth seeded winner of 14 majors.

“To win the tournament I need five more matches, and the doctor says that’s 100% impossible.”

Nadal, plagued by knee and wrist injuries throughout his career, added: “This is a very bad position, but that’s life.

“It’s obvious that if it’s not Roland Garros I would not take risks on playing the first two days, but it is the most important event of the year for me so we tried our best.”

Despite his latest setback, the charismatic Spaniard said he will keep playing although his participation at Wimbledon next month is now in serious doubt.

“This is a tough moment, but it’s not the end,” said Nadal, who won the first of his nine French Opens as a 19-year-old in 2005.

Nadal’s withdrawal gives compatriot Marcel Granollers a walkover into the last 16.

It’s also a huge boost to world number one Novak Djokovic’s hopes of lifting a first French Open crown.

Nadal and Djokovic were seeded to meet in the semi-finals next Friday — the date of the Spaniard’s 30th birthday.

Second seed Murray cut down Croatian giant Ivo Karlovic to reach the last-16.

Murray, a three-time semi-finalist, had needed two five-set matches and three days of play to get to the last 32.

But on Friday the 29-year-old needed just a shade under two hours to beat 6ft 11in (2.11m) Karlovic 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (7/3).

It was his seventh win in seven matches against the 37-year-old as Murray goes on to face John Isner of the United States.

“At the end it was very close. I got off to a quick start and against someone like Ivo that’s very important,” said Murray.

Third seed Wawrinka, scheduled to face Murray in the semi-finals, enjoyed a 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 win over France’s Jeremy Chardy.

The Swiss next goes up against Victor Troicki of Serbia.

Kei Nishikori of Japan also reached the last 16 with a 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 6-4 win over Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.

The fifth seed, a quarter-finalist in 2015, will play Richard Gasquet after the Frenchman defeated Australian Nick Kyrgios 6-2, 7-6 (9/7), 6-2.

Canada’s eighth seed Milos Raonic overcame a left hip injury to defeat Slovakian lucky loser Andrej Martin 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, 6-3.

The latest sinking comes only a day after two crowded boats capsized off Libya, leaving more than 100 feared dead
Dozens of migrants were missing Friday after an overloaded fishing boat sank off the coast of Libya, the third major tragedy in the Mediterranean in as many days, Italian rescuers said.


Italian coastguards sent in rescue ships after a call for help that spoke of 350 people in the water, while the Italian navy said it had saved 130 people and was still searching for others.

The coastguard, which coordinates rescue operations in the area, was not able to immediately provide further information about the latest incident.

But it said about 1,900 people were saved on Friday from 16 vessels in distress, adding to an estimated 10,000 people already rescued near the Libyan coast in the past four days.

A bout of good weather as summer arrives has kicked off a fresh stream of boats attempting to make the perilous crossing from Libya to Italy.

About 40,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in the country’s southern ports so far this year.

But in one of the worst tragedies in the Mediterranean in recent months, a fishing trawler carrying some 650 people capsized off the coast of Libya on Wednesday.

The Italian navy, which captured the tragedy in a horrifying video that shows the boat roll over and dump its passengers into the water, was able to rescue about 560 people.

But five people died and 100 are still feared missing, according to many survivors who reported having lost a loved one or a close passenger.

On Thursday, the EU’s naval force said up to 30 migrants were believed to have died after another ship flipped over off Libya.

“Three sinkings in three days, it’s very worrying,” said Carlotta Sami, spokeswoman for the UN refugee agency in Rome.

Lagos State Government has lifted the restriction order on human and vehicular movement during the May Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise scheduled for Saturday (May 28th).


This is contained in a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by Tunde Awobiyi, the Director, Public Affairs and Research, Ministry of the Environment.

According to the statement, the lifting of the restriction of movement is due to the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) Examination holding across the country on Saturday.

It said that the decision was made to allow for free movement of examination materials and also for students, invigilators and other stakeholders to participate effectively in the examination.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, according to the statement, however, urged Lagosians to still observe the exercise by cleaning their homes and clearing the drains in their neighbourhoods.

He said that this was important in order to prevent flooding in the state and allow free flow of water as the rainy season gathers momentum.

The statement quoted the commissioner as saying that “the state government waived the restriction order so as not to jeopardise the future of the candidates whose counterparts in other parts of the federation will write the same examination”.

It said that the monthly sanitation exercise would continue in June.

The idea is that passengers sit far above other vehicles on the road, allowing cars to pass underneath.

In a model of the vehicle, it appears to run on a set of fixed rails embedded on the road.

It means the vehicle is more like a cross between a tram and a bus.

Engineers hope the design will increase the availability of the road space, and cause fewer traffic jams than regular buses.

It is also expected to save costs compared to other public transport options, like the subway.

That is because Lasu have been accepting those that chose them as second choice. Looking at it from last year Putme, second choice candidates have a very slim chance of being admitted if only you have a very long leg.
To be on the safer side, change Lasu to first choice.
