Even in societies without formal religion, people still knew stealing or murder was wrong, not because of fear of divine punishment, but because it destroyed trust and harmed others, harm which they didn't like to happen to themselves.

Even in animals that don't have a rule book to follow, empathy is usually observed even across species. That's why those practices are abandoned just like the practices in the so called morality rule book whose recommendations for almost everything amoral is to stone to death and burn alive. Why don't you stone people to death and burn them alive if your rule book is valid and objective. It's quite simple common sense really.
