how are we to believe anything from Wikileaks since most of their stories are continually debunked? Ask Oshiomole how they twisted his story.

Seun, why are you breaking your own rule all over the place?

Politics / Presidency Uncovers Plot To Discredit April Polls by Time2Think(f): 12:10pm On Mar 07, 2011
THE presidency is said to have uncovered plot by some opposition figures to discredit the process

leading to the conduct of the April general election, even before the elections are conducted.

Sources told the Nigerian Tribune that the government had uncovered plans by certain opposition leaders to push negative stuff about the elections into some media houses, and they would then draw the attention of foreign observers to such stories in the heat of the elections.

Sources said on Sunday that government had asked concerned agencies to be on the prevent to avert a situation where Nigerians are blackmailed after a rigorous exercise.

A source said that one of the groups suspected to be working on how to discredit the elections had recently published a number of reasons the elections may not be free and fair in April.

The source further said that the said publication was capped by another media report linking President Goodluck Jonathan to the rigging of the 2007 elections.

“Whereas there is no iota of truth in the claims, the oppositions [groups], having sensed apparent defeat, are trying to lay a foundation for an orchestrated blackmail of the election process,” the source said.

He further added that since the opposition sensed that they would lose the election, they had not been campaigning as hard as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“President Jonathan has gone from zone to zone; he is going from state to state and he is going from city to city and door to door. He and his campaigners are busy explaining, campaigning and reaching out to the people directly. He is showing example of a true democrat but the opposition are sleeping and trying to hide under the banner of a presidential debate, which will not be seen by 75 per cent of Nigerians who have no access to television,” a source further stated.

The source added that four weeks to the presidential election, the opposition groups are yet to cover the states in any of the six geopolitical zones, asking when they would be able to cover the length and breadth of Nigeria.

The source said that President Jonathan had shown clearly in four instances that he was bent on delivering free and fair elections to Nigerians, adding that on those occasions, not even the opposition would dispute the elections.

The source stated that the four elections supervised by President Jonathan include the by-elections in Etsako Central in Edo State and Ikorodu in Lagos State; the Anambra governorship election and the council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“In all these four elections, the winners emerged clearly. Not even the ACN could protest its defeat in Ikorodu, in Lagos, because it was transparent. The election in Etsako in Edo was also not contested by the PDP, so President Jonathan’s pedigree in the conduct of free and fair elections is not in doubt,” the source further said.

Another source said on Sunday: “President Jonathan is not afraid of debate but it must be a debate, devoid of mudslinging and targeted at finding solutions. He is a democrat who believes in process and we have realised that apart from the candidate of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, all other contenders are not tested in democratic governance. Buhari was a despot and Ribadu was never an administrator. The attempt to create doubts in the minds of Nigerians and the international community is an attempt to capture the leadership of this country through false avenues and this cannot happen,” the source said.

INVESTIGATION by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into the alleged multibillion naira scam in the Pensions office has reportedly led to the discovery of another secret personal bank account containing N1.5 billion, believed to have been diverted from the scheme.

The latest discovery brought to N14.3 billion, money allegedly stolen from the scheme and said to have been lodged in three secret accounts by the former director of the office, Dr S.T Shuaibu and his deputy, Mrs Phiana Chidi, and a personal assistant to Shuaibu, one Aliu Bello.

The spokesperson of the commission, Mr Femi Babafemi, confirmed the fresh discovery.

The commission had said it had earlier traced N800 million to an account belonging to Chidi, who is now a deputy director in the Ministry of Transport, while another N12 billion was reportedly traced to the account of her former boss, Shuaibu, who is now the Director of Finance, Ministry of Petroleum.

Both Shuaibu and Chidi were said to be in the commission’s net, with Babafemi confirming their arrest.

It was gathered that operatives of the commission, at the weekend, sealed off two multi-million naira petrol stations believed to be owned by Shuaibu in Kogi State.

Operatives of the EFCC who were working on the case were said to have also uncovered a multi-billion naira housing estate being built in Sokoto by Bello and subsequently sealed it off.

Fictitious names were allegedly used as genuine pensioners by the former leadership of the Pensions office, to allegedly steal billions of naira from the scheme.

Chidi had earlier been arrested by the commission and released on administrative bail, with the commission saying it was on the trail of a former director who turned out to be Shuaibu and his aide, Bello.

A source in the commission noted that “while our operatives were working on the pensions committee, it was discovered that 141,970 pensioners are on the payroll of the Federal Government, but less than 90,000 pensioners were verified, while 34,000 are ghost workers.”

The Lagos State Government has opposed plans by the Federal Government through the National Tax Policy to reduce income tax rates.

It said such a move would adversely affect the revenue of the state government without giving it any opportunity to make up for the loss.

The state government is also seeking the alteration of the present Revenue Allocation Formula to enable states and local governments to get a bigger share.

These demands formed a seven-point communiqué issued on Friday at the end of the sixth Executive/Legislative parley on ‘Good Governance and Strategic Planning’ in Lagos.

The state government also sought the amendment of the Value Added Tax Act to preserve the revenues exclusively for states and local governments. It said this would enable them to cope with the increasing challenges of governance.

In the communiqué read at the end of the session by a member of the House of Representatives from Surulere Federal Constituency I, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, the state government argued that even though the National Tax Policy was seeking an increase in indirect tax rates and decrease in income tax rates, experience had shown that only the rate reduction could easily achieved.

The parley recalled the crisis generated by the attempt to increase VAT rates through the VAT Order 2007, saying it clearly illustrated the difficulty that would be encountered should there be an attempt to increase indirect taxes.

Furthermore, it noted that despite the National Assembly reserving the legislative authority over Personal Income Tax, the importance of the state government cannot be jettisoned as the PIT revenues belong exclusively to the state.

“It is important for states to be given an enabling environment to collect all forms of sales and consumption taxes as these are not on the exclusive legislative list and are regarded as residual matters for the State House of Assembly,” the summit declared.

In his keynote address, Governor Babatunde Fashola argued that the visible progress being made by the state was largely due to its commitment to an effective tax policy and budget implementation in the last three years.
Politics / $25,000 Placed On Nigerian Wanted For Manslaughter by Time2Think(f): 2:53am On Mar 07, 2011
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/03/25000-placed-on-nigerian-wanted-for-manslaughter/

A Nigerian living in the United State, Jessica Rene Tata, has been declared wanted by the U.S. Marshals over allegation of committing offences ranging from manslaughter, injury and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

The US authority has, therefore, placed a $25,000 reward for any information that could lead directly to Tata’s arrest. This made the Nigerian, an owner of a Texas daycare, one of the most 15 wanted fugitive list in the state.

Jessica Tata is wanted on four counts of manslaughter, six counts of reckless injury to a child, three counts of abandoning a child under 15 and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

It was gathered that on February 24, Tata, who owned and operated Jackie’s Day Care in Houston, allegedly left the premises leaving seven children alone in the house with a pot of oil on a burning stove, following which the Houston Fire Department, HFD, responded to the residence at 1:30 p.m., following a 911 call reporting a fire. Upon arrival, the HFD discovered the seven children inside, four died from their injuries and three survived the fire.
