The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has taken swift action against officials involved in the harassment of a female candidate wearing a hijab during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Lagos.

Oil marketers are gearing up to load refined petroleum products from the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) as workers at the facility race to prepare it for production on the directives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

Gold, what it is?
Both Merriam-Webster dictionary and Encyclopedia Britannica define "gold" as "a soft yellow metal that is very valuable and that is used especially in jewelry.” This definition is obviously instructive as it provides knowledge and information about the concept, but it's literarily denotative thus consequently not exhaustive of the rather preferred operational meaning of the word especially in the context of this Paper. 

So, defining "gold" in the context of "He Who Cherishes Gold should be Recipient of Gold" as a topic of discourse at this august Gold Merit Award presentation of The Gold Magazine, should be done via connotative derivatives. Connotatively therefore, the world "gold" in this instance, means "something or someone valued as being the finest of its or their kind, as those exemplifying a heart of gold, for instance. 

The Historic Discovery of Gold
While historians and other experts still can't ascertain when or who discovered the first ever gold, it's believed that the metal was first found by the ancient Egyptians around 2450 B.C. The discovery has been credited to an Egyptian alchemist named Zosimos who, while mining for something else, inadvertently chanced upon gold in a region called Nubia, according to research.

"He Who Cherishes Gold Should be Recipient of Gold”
As connotatively conceptualized and interpreted above, the Recipients of The Gold Magazine's Gold Merit Awards today were deemed to be the "finest" of their kind, not because they are the finest in worldly jewelry or other materials acquisition. But they are having the Gold Merit Awards bestowed on them for their positive golden disposition to life as evident in their noble contributions to society in their various spheres of influence.

Distinguishably, whether the concept is literarily denotatively defined or connotatively operationalized, a particular word appears indispensable in the explanation or definition of Gold, and that's the word "value" (valuable). Today's Awardees cherish gold not because they always appear in only-the-rich-can-afford jewelry or expensive ornaments, but simply because they prioritize valuable service to humanity and society. At least, this must be the belief of the organizers in their yardsticks for assessing deserving Recipients of today's Merit Awards.  

More so, "gold” has several qualities that have made it exceptionally valuable throughout history. Four out of the many qualities of gold suffice as they characterize it. The first is quality of attraction and brightness. A deserving Recipient of today’s Award is also believed to have this quality. The Awardees are bright and attractive to people, including the organizers of this great event because of their value addition to, and not subtraction from people’s lives. 

The second is quality of durability and indestructibility. Gold is durable and indestructible. As deserving Merit Awardees, you are expected to be consistent in your positive contributions, in whatever way you're doing this, in your areas of domicile or to the society generally. You shouldn't be easily negatively influenced. You should remain durable and indestructible like gold. 

The third is the quality of malleability. Gold is malleable meaning it has a capacity for adaptive change. As deserving Gold Awardees, you shouldn't be unnecessarily rigid. You should be adaptive and receptive to innovative initiatives and changes in the society. 

The fourth is quality of purity and rarity. Gold is pure in form and rare as a metal. As Gold Merit Recipients, you are expected to possess this quality of purity and rarity. Your intention should be pure and your type and gem, in terms of your emulation-worthy devotion to promotion, and not demotion, of human emotion and selfless service delivery, should be distinguishably rare. 

I am sure this is truly what and who you are. It is on this, and for this feat that I say congratulations on your well-deserved Gold Merit Awards today by The Gold Magazine for your Golden disposition to life.
