Nigeria is having its worst run ever in terms of diplomatic affairs and diplomacy under this government. From the Niger "invasion" fiasco to the ECOWAS exodus and now this. In the midst of all these, we still don't have any ambassador to manage diplomatic fall-outs like this before they blow out of proportion. AMBASSADOR Lilian Onoh has filed a revised defamation lawsuit in Texas against Sahara Reporters and its chairwoman, LaKeisha Landrum Pierre, demanding more than $21 million in damages.

Onoh had previously sued Sahara Reporters and its founder, Omoyele Sowore. But the case took a turn when Sowore told the court he is a Nigerian citizen and no longer affiliated with Sahara Reporters, having resigned in 2017 and that he was returning back to Nigeria to live long term. That left Landrum Pierre—who described herself in court as the Chairwoman and COO of the media outlet—to face the suit.

Pierre is also one of the partners of Emmeline Ventures, a venture capital firm with investment in several US states, including Texas.

Court documents show Onoh has struggled to serve both Sahara Reporters and Landrum Pierre, as they abandoned their New York office and attempts at her California residence were unsuccessful. Onoh has now filed a motion for substituted service, asking the court to allow her to serve them via email—a move the court could grant, given that evading service is viewed seriously in U.S. federal cases.

Alongside her $21 million claim, Onoh is seeking a jury trial for punitive damages, which in American defamation cases can be significantly higher than compensatory damages.

This case also carries political undertones. Sowore testified that former Nigerian Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama concocted the report that triggered the lawsuit, while Onyeama has denied any involvement during his testimony in an Abuja High Court, instead blaming his former Permanent Secretary, Gabriel Aduda.

Onoh previously represented Nigeria in Namibia and Jamaica. She contends that the actions of Onyeama, Aduda and Sowore, who has republished the concocted report about seven or eight times, violate the Magnitsky Act which was passed by US Congress in 2012 after the fatal Russian Government retalian against Sergei Magnitsky for whistleblowing

I have been living in the US for almost a decade, and I can tell you that the value of $1,000 in the US is less than 90k in Nigeria.

It is surprising that many of you, including graduates, don't understand that you cannot just arbitrarily convert dollars or pounds to naira in this context.

You cannot start a family anywhere in the US with $1, 000. You would need at least a job that pays you $6,000 per month to think of marriage. An ideal monthly salary would be around $10,000.

With 1.5 million in Nigeria, you can afford to marry a jobless partner, support two children, and own a decent car.

You could eat out in Nigeria with 2k, but eating out in the US would cost you around 25 dollars (35k). I get a haircut every month for $50 (75k) in the US. In Nigeria, I could get the same haircut for around 1k.

If you have a baby in the US, you would need to spend around $2,000 (3 million) per month on day care. In Nigeria, you would pay maybe 50k.

I laugh each time I see some posts on social media converting people's salary in UK/US/CA to naira, thinking the naira equivalent of those figures have the same impact in those countries. It is unfortunate that some people have such mentality.

That being said, if you manage to have some savings in places like US and you bring such to Nigeria, you could tie up a project or more.

If you earn 1.5m naira per month in Nigeria, you are considered a big and can live a very good life in Nigeria. With 3000 dollars a month in the USA, you are considered a poor man. You cannot even be able to afford your bills.

The so called observations actually put to question Rufai Oseni’s university education. There is no person who passed through a public university in Nigeria who won’t know one or two persons who served as HoD of a department without a PhD.

Again, he said law is five years. That’s another very ignorant statement. Law used to be four years till it was changed to five years in the early 90’s. So if you have been to a polytechnic, you cross over straight to 200 and spend three years. It’s the same thing with Direct Entry student of today crossing over to 200 level. So, what’s the big deal in spending three years for his law degree?

He also said we don’t know his primary and secondary schools. That’s extremely silly because Bayo Onanuga only released an highlight of his CV for the press release announcing his appointment. Go and ask the man directly for his comprehensive CV or do your investigative findings about him.

5 years law started around 1995. Prior to 1995 it was 4 years. Those that came in with direct entry then did 3 years in law.
The other point is the issue of HOD. I spent 4 years in the university. I had 2 heads during these two years. None had their Phd.
If Rufai posted this, he better go and delete it because it has shown he does not know anything.
