Personally, no one in my family or even myself thought I looked different from most African Americans until THEY pointd it out to me. I never said that you cannot be lightskin and West African, I know race mixing happens in other places beside America. I know there are light complected Africans.

You will be surprised. Not to be stereotypical but Americans tend to be affected by people's view on them compared to Africans. Probably because we, Africans have bigger problems to worry about, we can't be bothered by petty things like that. It's not a matter of age. people are easily influenced in America.

@Tisha, it was funny at first but now, you need to calm down. why should you care what AA men(your people or not) think of you? Some Nigerian girls get the same treatment from Nigerian men and vice versa. You don't see anybody killing themselves. So long as you know you look good and always have that mindset(some might call it being conceited but who cares?), you'll be fine. I think you give these men the impression that their opinions matter. You need to start by being confident in yourself.

Because I want to feel pretty, and have my beauty validated and affirmed like the lightskin girls. I never saw anything worng with how I look, I don't have any unbalanced features or anything. But it's sad when people thik that way about you just because you don't look mixed.

No, I am not. I just get told I look like I am from West Africa, even though my family has been African  American for many  many generations. perhaps there was not a lot of mixing going on. My sister is a bit lighter than me, and has an African American look, I guess. She never gets asked if she is from Africa.

I am Gabrielle Union's complexion, we have similar features. I can't really think of any other black celebs because there aren't that many brown girls in the media, they are all mixed or very light
