Politics / Tinubu, Osinbajo, Fayemi, Other South-west Presidential Aspirants Meet Today by Tissaia(f): 6:37am On Jun 04, 2022
Tinubu, Osinbajo, Fayemi, other South-West presidential aspirants meet today
Eniola Akinkuotu, Tunde Ajaja, Adebayo Folorunsho-Francis and Godfrey George

The ruling All Progressives Congress presidential aspirants from the South-West are expected to hold a final meeting in Abuja today (Saturday) to decide on the way forward, Saturday PUNCH can confirm.

The seven presidential aspirants from the South-West are Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; APC stalwart, Bola Tinubu; Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State; former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun; Deputy Majority Leader of the Senate, Ajayi Boroffice; a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole; and fiery Lagos cleric, Pastor Tunde Bakare.

Also expected at the meeting are governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun) and Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo). Some ministers of South-West extraction are also expected to attend the parley.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that the meeting would hold at the Abuja home of a former governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, around 8pm.

Impeccable sources told our correspondent that the discussion would border on South-West unity and reach a possible consensus.

One of the aspirants, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “We will all be meeting at Chief Osoba’s home by 8pm in Abuja. Everyone is expected to be present. We will all sit together and discuss the need to ensure that the South-West gets the ticket.

“However, all of us will be asked to be truthful with one another and see who among us has the best chance of winning the primary. Then if anyone is willing to step down to boost the chances of the South-West, then this will be encouraged.”

Saturday PUNCH gathered on Friday that intense lobbying by some northern governors to ensure that the APC gives its presidential ticket to a northerner had unsettled the South-West bloc of the party.

This was said to have caused Tinubu’s outburst at a meeting with Ogun State delegates on Thursday, where he insisted that the APC must give its ticket to a Yoruba man and that he must be the favoured candidate.

Presidential aspirants from the South-East had an emergency meeting on Friday to deliberate on a consensus aspirant for the region.

Although their last meeting took place at the Maitama home of Okorocha days before his house was raided by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the venue of their Friday meeting was unknown.

A source had told The PUNCH that just as the South-West leaders, the Igbo aspirants had resolved to consider throwing their weight behind one of their own ahead of the convention. The source disclosed that all the presidential hopefuls in the region were meeting almost on a daily basis.

Ohaneye confirmed the report in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents on Friday.

Asked if the South-East aspirants agreed on any form of consensus yet, she stated that it would form the highlight of their meeting by evening. “That is actually what we are doing today (Friday). We are looking at getting a consensus representative,” she said.

When reminded that politicians like Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, and Orji Uzor Kalu had thrown their weight behind Lawan, she insisted that they were not at the forefront of the campaign.

“We are talking about APC aspirants. Those people you mentioned are not. We are focusing only on the South-East aspirants. On what grounds are they standing for the South-East?”

Well, Zulum currently generated bad blood at the recently concluded state primaries especially is the southern Borno region due to imposition of candidates. In Biu for example, the people do not want the current Member representing them at the State House of Assembly and they clearly informed Zulum when he came to Biu some days before the primaries but he still imposed the same person on them. Well, let’s watch and see how things unfold.
if I got your logic. Zulum will lose because of that

2023: Votes, not social media determine winners — INEC cautions southern Nigeria youths

…laments 20 million unclaimed PVCs in vault

By Luminous Jannamike, Abuja

As Nigerians prepare for the upcoming 2023 elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed worry over the 20 million permanent voters’ cards still lying unclaimed in its vault.

It also decried the poor participation of citizens in the ongoing continuous voters’ registration exercise.

INEC’s Deputy Director, Voter Education, Mrs Mary Nkem, stated this at the launch of the PVC Bus Drive project, organised by a non-governmental organisation, the Advocacy for Civic Engagement, in Abuja on Wednesday.

She, therefore, urged Nigerians, especially the youth demography to be actively involved in the process of electing new leaders that will effect true change and move the country forward.

According to INEC, votes not social media will determine the winners of the 2023 general elections.

The Commission said, “This CVR exercise began on the 30th of June, 2021, but we have discovered that between that time and a few weeks ago, the turnout has been relatively low.

“If the youths in this country would come out en masse to cast their votes, we will no longer be recording 15 or 20 percent voter turnout in our elections, because we know that the population of the youths alone can make a difference.

“The youths no longer visit the social media, they basically live there today. Therefore, when you want to reach out to them, you must go to where you will meet them – social media.

“However, I will like to say that INEC does not conduct an election on social media neither do we count ballots on Twitter or Instagram.

“Our ballots are counted in the ballot box. It is only the ballot paper that enters into the ballot box that the Commission counts.

“So, what does that mean? It means that on election day people must go out to cast their votes. For you to be able to do so, you must be a registered voter and in possession of a PVC.”

In his remarks, the Executive Director, Advocacy for Civic Engagement, Barr. Obinna Osisiogu, said that PVC Bus Drive Project will support at least 60 percent of eligible young voters to register, collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) and vote in the 2023 elections.

According to him, the project was initiated to eliminate the logistical barriers hindering some Nigerians, particularly those residing in rural areas from participating in the ongoing continuous voters’ registration exercise and collecting their PVCs thereafter.

He explained that ACE working in collaboration with Yiaga Africa and the UNDP will provide free bus service in two area councils in the FCT, as well as across the LGAs in Ondo and Ogun states to enable the people to aaccessingthe INEC office nearest to them as part of the traditional and non-traditional means of political mobilisation.

Southerners are noisemakers, North’ll remain in power –Apostle Suleman
Sodiq Oyeleke
1 June 2022

General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has prophecies the emergence of a northerner as the next president of Nigeria.

He said this during his church’s convention in Abuja, saying that the northerners work as a team.

He illustrated his point with the stepping down of Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, for another northerner, Atiku Abubakar, at the Peoples Democratic Party’s convention in Abuja on Saturday.

The PUNCH had reported that Atiku Abubakar got 371 votes to beat his closest contenders, Nyesom Wike who polled 237, and the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who came a distant third with 70 votes.

Suleman said, “You saw what played out yesterday in Abuja? Why do you think the North has been in office and power for many years? Even if the North is not in the office, the North will be in power.

“If they are not in power, they will be in office. This is because the Southern region, especially South-South, are noisemakers. The North will allow you to finish making your noise then they will shock you. Atiku knew the Southerners were noisemakers, and he worked on it.

“They are 100 per cent loyal to themselves; that is why Tambuwal could take such a decision. All my Northern friends have not spoken ill of me, but the Southerners are the ones mocking me.”
