generationz: seriously these questions you are asking should have been asked 2- 3yrs ago while you were still In year 2or 3 and still comfortably being fed by your parents. I'm guessing you were still being freaked about wearing black and white in the uni?
Anyway its isn't too late right now .
For about 80% of young wigs in especially those who dont have rich parents, the first few years are filled with back breaking work and very little pay If you are smart maybe after 5years you hit it big and begin to live well. The work doesn't get any easier but it standard of living gets better.
secondly I doubt any top lawyer in Nigeria today didn't get their hands soiled or do dirty work for corrupt billionaires or politicians.
Most young lawyers I know have a side hustle. Even if its against the rules of the profession, the jobs they get at firms pay peanuts.
so you have two options: 1: start a side hustle now in your final year. this one year before law school will be a time you can comfortably grow one without the stress of financial needs popping up. At least you still dey chop mama thank you. If your side hustle peaks, abandon law school next year. Let it grow point you can put people in charge of it to finish your education.
That's is if you are really desperate for money and can't be patient enough to pay the price of hustling for a few years before your big break.
2 if you are really passionate about law you might have to figure out how to either run your business and law school together or just go through law school and focus on getting good grades.
Whatever you chose to do now start building CONNECTIONS IS VERY IMPORTANT. In Nigeria na the koko
Get mentors now .
There are some lawyers in Nigeria who will be willing to advice you based on their own experiences.
The second is hard work and focus.
Most lawyers stay poor and miserable because they can't think outside the box and can't work smart. So they blame the system and everything within it. They forget that life isn't fair and the days of oppressing people with your white and black on campus are over.
Its a dog eat dog world and only the most resilient survive.
So you better act fast.
The most important thing is to always pray
pray for wisdom to make the right choices
pray for the right connections to 'waltz' into your life ( like king David ) and also be ready to deliver and show you abilities.
Pray for strength to never give up on the hustle
and finally pray for opportunities to come with little efforts or no lip service.
stay blessed damn, your words hit the spot, are you also a lawyer? Let's get married |

hardbody: Lawyers are not trained to only practice the profession as advocates. Lawyers can and often do well as solicitors. This is where the real money is, in the short term. You have to build up advocacy skills and clientele and this happens over time. The people I help everyday with their personal and family financial issues are not lawyers, they belong to a wide spectrum of professions including traders like you. My point is, singling out the legal profession as if it is responsible for some people's financial challenges is myopic. Beyond the financial returns, knowing the law and carrying that toga gives you some headroom above contemporaries if you know how to deploy your skills. In the final analysis, it still boils down to the person and the economy, not the profession. pls sir I am requesting for some form of mentorship from you, you seem to be vast in the law, I humbly await your reply. |

Beowulf: To the OP, there is no silver bullet and pretty much every view expressed on here is valid.
In my own experience, I believe God just wanted to elevate me. Most people will call it luck. You need to work hard as a student and even more so as a lawyer
Try and graduate with 2.1. Work hard on your diction and writing. If you are in Lagos, start looking for internships in big law firms before you get to law school.
Get a mentor who has made it. The person does not necessarily need to be a much older person. There are young lawyers making waves in corporate practice in top law firms in Lagos.
If you have the means, after 2-3 years of practice, try and get an LLM from the US, Canada or the UK.
Above all keep improving yourself as a person and who knows what will happen.
All the best. The profession is not for the fainthearted. Having said all that, I know mates who left law and have become hugely successful in business.
May God guide you. thank u for your advice, and about getting a mentor, can you pls be mine? |

hardbody: Stick to what you know. I am in corporate employment after practising for a number of years, I can actually retire today and live an affluent life. Let me take you further, some of my classmates head legal services of first tier banks in this country as DGMs and GMs. Ask around for what figures in those cadres walk home with from banks. Finally, law is the profession that enables you work in virtually all spheres... An administrator, HR personnel, Management consultant, legal advisory, company secretary, banking operations, legal practise, tax practise, the horizon is endless. In my next life, I will still be a lawyer. As a teaser, I flew out to London on Tuesday to review agreements on behalf of my company with other foreign colleagues. I came back on Friday. All expenses paid. Again stick to what you know hello sir, pls can you be my mentor in the legal arena.? |

Olumeme: To be sincere with you, law in Nigeria is crap and highly overrated, I have a first class law school graduate who get 5k per week in abuja, the senior lawyers are extremely greedy and don't want to pave ways for the younger ones, except you have a very rich parents or you have senior family members who are ready to sincerely carry you along, you're on a long thing.
I'll rather advice someone study business administration, banking and finance or accounting than law. If there's anyway you can change or tilt towards this line mentioned, it'll be better. hmm are you suggesting I get a second degree after graduation |

ikhileomotayo: That's a skewed way of thinking bro. Law is a professional course. Your success depends on your doggedness.
You could work in s company as a legal adviser, in a big chambers, you could go into property law and handle real estate, you could be into politics as a PA to a politician, the list is endless.
Right now your focus should be on graduating with good grades so these opportunities are there for you very nice, thank you sir |

pheforusty: The purpose for your study has been defeated. You're asking the wrong question. Why did you study law? Is it a passion ? or a means to make money? Go back and ask yourself these questions. it's really sad you're asking such question in your final year. i've actually asked myself these questions but I just want to know if when I become a lawyer things will be a bit easy financially |

SweetBuns: I'm not a law student but Nigeria is not about what you know but who you know. When you start uni, start looking for people to connect with. It will help you, even now. You're at crossroads my friend. i'll keep that in mind |

Excelboi: Very lucrative if you know your way. For the new wig, it might be rough and discouraging but in all sincerity, it's just a matter of time. Many lawyers are making it big. In my own chambers, We have very good briefs as we handle election petitions and property deals.
Many chambers pay very poor some as low as 10k and this is due to the seniors in the profession, They are not helping matters. Don't eye the money for now, focus on acquiring skills then establish your own chamber. I'm still learning as well and that doesn't discourage me.
See the likes of Yusuf Alli, Wole Olanipekun, Ahmed Raji and Co. Some of them may be poorly paid then or not even paid at all, but now they command billions as professional fees... Just try and learn the act of soliciting and how to draft legal documents well.
Some lucrative aspect of law are; Property deals Election petitions Tax law Arbitration
Thank You thanks a lot my learned colleague, how do you see maritime law ? |

Binikingdowm: Well I started this betting of a thing as far back as 2014, one thing I've realised is that we should all do what we know.
I tried to use other people formula even people on this thread such as Chewbacca( tennis lives cores), innobets(goal scorer), Austino(huge money on small odds), none of them favour me.
I've my own method and I choose to ignore it.
Alright, everyone should do what they know best don't think others are making it big there so you will also do it doesn't work like that .
Alextaiwo kindly delete my number, I'm a loner and I'll choose what i know best I can't keep waiting for people to help me.
I ain't quitting. stick with what works for you, i failed to heed this advice 3months ago and paid dearly for it... Lessons learnt |
