The Lagos State Parking Authority has announced plans to introduce paid parking on designated streets across the state. The general manager of the agency, Adebisi Adelabu, stated this during a stakeholder engagement with the Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area, Akeem Dauda, and members of the council’s management team. This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs at LASPA, Dunkwu Divine. Adelabu explained that the On-Street Parking Scheme would begin with a pilot phase in selected local government areas, including Ikeja. She noted that the initiative is aimed at improving parking orderliness, reducing traffic congestion and creating employment opportunities for residents. “The On-Street Parking Scheme will improve parking management, enhance traffic flow and generate employment opportunities, particularly for residents within the selected areas,” she said. The LASPA boss explained that the responsibility for managing parking operations was previously under local government authorities before being transferred to LASPA by the Conference of the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, LCDA. She added that councils would benefit from the initiative based on their level of cooperation, urging them to actively support its rollout. Nigerian Govt bans honorary degree holders from using ‘Dr’ title The Federal Government has barred recipients of honorary degrees from adding “Dr” to their names. Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced this at a press briefing at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday,May 6. He said the decision was taken at the Federal Executive Council meeting, which held on April 30. Alausa said the move was aimed at ending decades of indiscriminate conferment of degrees for political patronage and financial gain. “The recent trend we’ve seen with the award of honorary degrees has revealed a growing abuse and politicisation of this academic privilege. We’ve seen awards being used for political patronage, for financial gain, as well as the conferral of awards on serving public officials, which, as part of the ethics of honorary degree awards, should not happen.” According to the Minister, universities that violate the FEC decision will face sanctions, adding that the Vice Chancellors had been directed to streamline the process. Cybercrime allegation: Court remands Justice Crack in SSS custody A Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded social critic, Justice Chidebere, popularly known as “Justice Crack,” in the custody of the State Security Services, SSS. He was arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on alleged cybercrime, breach of public peace, and felony, to which he pleaded not guilty. Following the arraignment, counsel for the SSS, Mark Oruba, asked the court to remand the defendant in custody in the interest of public security. However, defence counsel opposed the application, informing the court that although they had been served with the charges, they intended to file a bail application for hearing later in the week. The presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, ordered that the defendant be remanded in SSS custody until May 25 for the commencement of trial and hearing of the bail application. In a statement released on Saturday, May 2, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said Justice Crack was arrested following a post he made on social media featuring soldiers’ complaints about their feeding and general welfare. It said a deeper look at the matter revealed that the influencer’s engagement with the soldiers went beyond welfare concerns. A 45-year old woman, Mrs Mary Yaduyan, has d!ed a few hours after delivering a set of quintuplets—five baby boys, at a specialist hospital in Akure, Ondo State. It was gathered that the deceased had been childless for over 14 years before she eventually conceived in 2025 through an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) procedure. Mary was said to have passed away following a complication identified by medical experts as a pulmonary embolism, few hours after she was delivered of the babies via caesarean section. The hospital, known for handling multiple births, was thrown into mourning following the sudden d3ath, which occurred about four hours after what had been described as a successful delivery. The woman had reportedly undergone regular antenatal care without major complications throughout the pregnancy. Speaking with Ondo State Government publication, Hope Newspaper, the lead consultant, who does not want his name in print, expressed sadness over the situation, saying someone he cared for, did not make it at last. He said that the patient had a history of uterine fibroids, which were surgically removed two years prior to the procedure. According to him, the pregnancy progressed smoothly until about 31 weeks, when she experienced premature rupture of membranes and was placed under close medical supervision. The doctor said the medical team adopted conservative management to prolong the pregnancy to a safer gestational age, while monitoring for signs of infection and other complications. “The patient later complained of chest pain, prompting the involvement of a consultant cardiologist. “However, initial assessments did not indicate immediate danger,” he said. “Following the delivery, the patient remained stable, with normal vital signs, including blood pressure and oxygen levels normal. Medical personnel, including a consultant anaesthesiologist, reportedly monitored her closely due to the high-risk nature of the delivery. “Everything appeared normal after the operation. There was no sign of excessive bleeding, and her vital signs were stable.” He added that the sudden deterioration was later attributed to ‘pulmonary embolism.’embolism’, a condition caused by blood clot blocking vessels in the lungs. Anoruo, who operates a legal and educational consultancy in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, was arrested by EFCC operatives on Monday, April 20, 2026. The agency in a statement said his case began after he submitted a petition dated September 22, 2025 to the EFCC, on behalf of his clients, against the management of a company, Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited. However, investigations revealed that both the petition and the subsequent Letter of Withdrawal dated March 5, 2026, bore a forged seal of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, which Anoruo confessed to have obtained from an undisclosed business centre in Lagos. During investigations,the 55-year-old claimed that although he obtained a Law degree in 2018 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, through evening classes, he did not attend the Nigerian Law School. Ayuk mentioned that the confirmed case involves a 53-year-old Chinese expatriate who arrived in Nigeria via Lagos on March 17, 2026, and later proceeded to a factory in Akamkpa Local Government Area, where symptoms were first detected. According to Ayuk, the patient initially presented mild symptoms and was referred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where samples were collected and the infection confirmed. “The patient is currently receiving care at the state’s designated isolation and treatment centre and is responding well to treatment’’Ayuk said The commissioner explained that the government delayed public announcement until diagnostic protocols were completed to avoid misinformation, stressing that the state remains vigilant in disease surveillance. “We have activated all necessary procedures, including contact tracing and isolation, to prevent further spread’’ he added State Epidemiologist, Dr. Inyang Ekpenyong, said the case is the first officially recorded in Cross River since 2022, noting that even a single confirmed infection qualifies as an outbreak. “With even one case, we activated the Emergency Operations Centre. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced the release of results for candidates who sat the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination on Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18. In a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, the board said 1,264,940 results from the two days had been processed and made available for candidates. “The results of candidates who sat the examination on Friday, 17 April and Saturday, 18 April 2026 have now been released. “A total of 1,264,940 results from these two days are available for candidates to check/view,” the statement read. The board noted that this latest batch follows an earlier release of results for candidates who wrote the examination on Thursday, April 16. The board had earlier released 632,752 results of candidates who sat the examination on Thursday, 16 April 2026. This brings the total number of results released so far to 1,897,692,” it said. JAMB urged candidates to access their results through its designated SMS channels, maintaining its standard result-checking procedure. “To view their results, candidates should send UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019 using the phone (SIM) number they used to register for the 2026 UTME,” the statement added. The examination body further explained that the results released so far represent outcomes from the first three days of the nationwide exercise. Abuja hotel collapse: Wike orders arrest of owner, to convert land to public use The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate arrest of the owner of a multi-story hotel that collapsed in Jikwoyi, Abuja last Friday, April 4 and announced that the land would be seized for public use. LIB had reported that the building crumbled while workers were on site, triggering an emergency response from relevant authorities. Visiting the site today April 7, Wike said the building was constructed without approval from the FCT Department of Development Control and that all the stop-work notices sent to the builders were ignored by the developer. Wike confirmed that while there were no fatalities, several people sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. He warned that the outcome could have been far worse. Announcing the government’s plans for the land, Wike said the FCT Administration will take over the land for public use, noting that those responsible for the illegal construction will face prosecution in accordance with the law. The spokesperson for the State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, April 4, 2026. According to the PPRO, Alex claimed he arrived in Nigeria with his four relatives from Spain on March 30, 2026 via Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport Abuja. However, he lost contact with his relatives along Jos to Saminaka road. LAGOS ANNOUNCES ROAD CLOSURES FOR FANTI CARNIVAL The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, has announced the temporary closure of some roads ahead of the Lagos Fanti Carnival scheduled for Monday, 6th April 2026. The affected roads to be cordoned off include: • King George V Road at the junction by Mobil Filling Station • Onikan Roundabout, inbound to TBS • Flagstaff House, inbound to TBS • Outer Marina by State House, inbound to TBS • Campbell Street by the Old Defence Building • Catholic Mission Street by St. Nicholas Hospital. All road closures will commence from 7:00 a.m. Motorists and residents are advised to plan their movements accordingly and use alternative routes during this period. According to Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alternative routes are: Vehicles coming from Obalende, descending towards Onikan Roundabout, will be directed towards Zone 2. Vehicles coming from Bonny Camp towards McEwen Bridge, as well as those descending from Flagstaff House towards TBS, will be diverted towards Obalende Bridge. Vehicles coming from Outer Marina towards TBS will also be diverted towards Obalende Bridge.
