Peller and his friend, Bello Oladipo, were arrested by men of the Lagos state police command on July 2 for driving a vehicle without a plate number on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal road.

They were arraigned before a Magistrate court in the state on Monday, July 9 on a three-count charge including resisting arrest, obstructing police officers from performing their lawful duties, and threatening as well as filming officers during an operation.

The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to reports of the rejection of the standard ₦100 banknote by some members of the public, businesses, and other stakeholders, apparently due to doubts about its continued legal tender status.

For the avoidance of doubt, the CBN hereby reiterates that both the commemorative ₦100 banknote and the standard ₦100 banknote remain legal tender in Nigeria and must be accepted for all transactions nationwide. The commemorative ₦100 banknote, which was introduced to mark Nigeria's centenary, did not replace the existing standard ₦100 banknote.

The CBN strongly cautions individuals, businesses, financial institutions, and other economic agents against rejecting the standard ₦100 banknote. Such rejection constitutes a violation of the provisions of the CBN Act and undermines confidence in the national currency. The Bank will not hesitate to apply appropriate enforcement measures against any person or entity found to be in breach.

The Bank remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the Naira, ensuring confidence in all duly issued banknotes, and promoting smooth currency circulation across the country.

Accordingly, members of the public are urged to accept and transact with all banknotes legally issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

PRESIDENT TINUBU LAUNCHES POWER FORCE TO TRAIN 5,000 YOUNG NIGERIANS, ACCELERATE SMART METER ROLLOUT

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched Power Force, a new national initiative that will train 5,000 young Nigerians to support the accelerated deployment of smart electricity meters across the country, create employment opportunities, and strengthen ongoing power sector reforms.

The programme, implemented through the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), a federation led initiative with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, is a practical intervention designed to close critical skills gaps in meter installation while expanding opportunities for young Nigerians to participate directly in national development.

Power Force forms part of the administration’s broader effort to improve the performance and financial sustainability of the electricity sector. Expanded metering will help reduce estimated billing, improve transparency in customer charges, strengthen revenue collection, and support better service delivery over time.

The initiative also advances President Tinubu’s commitment to job creation and youth empowerment by equipping participants with practical technical skills, recognised certification, and pathways to employment and entrepreneurship within the power value chain.

The first phase of the programme will commence in Abuja in July 2026, with subsequent rollout across the six geopolitical zones.

Participants will undergo intensive technical training delivered by the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), while certification and compliance standards will be overseen by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA). Successful trainees will be connected to deployment opportunities with distribution companies, meter providers, and other industry partners

Speaking on the initiative, Chairman Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq said, “Power Force is a federation initiative that connects opportunity with impact, creating jobs for young Nigerians while strengthening electricity access in every state.”

The Honourable Minister of Power, Honourable Joseph Tegbe, said “A stronger power sector begins with skilled people. Power Force invests in Nigerian talent to power our nations future”

The Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Honourable Ayodele Olawande, said the programme reflects the administration’s commitment to creating practical opportunities for young Nigerians.

“Young Nigerians want opportunity, not handouts. Power Force gives them practical skills, recognised certification, and a direct pathway to meaningful work that supports national development.”

According to the Executive Secretary PMI, Mrs. Olu Arowolo Verheijen, “Metering restores trust. When customers pay only for what they use, revenues improve, investment follows, and service gets better. Power Force helps us scale that progress faster.”

Applications for the first cohort will open on 4 July 2026 and remains open for two weeks.

Jobs for our young people remain central to our Renewed Hope Agenda.

Through the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), which I established to close Nigeria’s metering gap, end estimated billing, protect consumers, and strengthen the electricity market, we are opening a new pathway for 5,000 young Nigerians to be trained as meter installers and technicians under The Power Force.

This programme is about jobs, skills, and dignity.

It will equip young Nigerians with practical technical skills and connect them to real work in a sector that touches every home, every business, and every community in our country.

The opportunity will be open to eligible Nigerians who have completed their secondary school education, with a dedicated quota reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps.

Metering is also central to making power more available to Nigerians.

When homes and businesses are properly metered, Nigerians can pay for what they actually use. When electricity distribution companies collect revenues more transparently and fairly, they are better able to reduce losses, maintain infrastructure, expand connections, and invest in better service.

This is how we build a power sector that is fairer to consumers, stronger for investors, and better able to deliver reliable electricity to the Nigerian people.

I have directed the Presidential Metering Initiative to work with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development @fmydNG, NAPTIN @NaptinNigeria, and all relevant stakeholders to commence this programme within the next 30 days.

What happened to Ekene Agala is a painful reminder of why we must never rush to judgment.

A woman initially accused Ekene of stealing ₦2 million and claimed there was CCTV footage to prove it. Based on that allegation, estate security and others nearly lynched him through jungle justice.

Today, the story has changed. The same woman now says there is no CCTV footage and claims it was a little child who allegedly saw Ekene taking the money.

This raises serious questions and reinforces an important lesson. Never follow the crowd without knowing the facts.

Tomorrow, we will begin the process of ensuring that Ekene Agala gets justice. We thank God he survived the mob attack.

Let this serve as a reminder to everyone, don't be quick to judge based on viral videos, rumours, or public sentiment. The truth often lies beyond the first story you hear.

Emerging facts now point to Ekene's innocence in the allegation against him. We will find out.

Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, has waded into the case of a man identified as Ekene Agala, who was beaten to a stupor by a mob and security operatives over alleged N2m theft.

The incident occurred in Enugu State contrary to initial social media reports.

A viral video shows the man with severely swollen face, sparking outrage and condemnation on social media.

In the video, Ogala insisted on his innocence and even swore on the graves of his parents.

He urged his accusers to produce the CCTV footage which allegedly captured him stealing the money.

Sharing a before and after photos of Agala on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Gwamnishu said emerging facts indicate that Ogala is innocent.

He described the incident as a painful reminder of why people shouldn’t be too quick to jump to judgment.

According to Gwamnishu, the woman who made the accusation said a CCTV footage of the theft doesn’t exist, claiming that it was a little child who allegedly saw Ekene taking the money.

The Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has directed all public and private schools across the state to immediately discontinue the organization of graduation ceremonies and end-of-session parties.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Department of Private Schools, Abeokuta, and addressed to administrators of both public and non-state (private) schools through Zonal Education Officers.

According to the ministry, reports had reached the government that some school administrators were allegedly extorting parents and guardians under the guise of organizing graduation and end-of-session celebrations for learners. The ministry noted that such actions are contrary to resolutions reached during the 2025/2026 pre-resumption stakeholders’ meeting held in September 2025 at Lisabi Grammar School Hall, Abeokuta.

The circular emphasized that the Ogun State Government frowns upon the organization of graduation and end-of-session parties for pupils and students in all classes across both public and private schools in the state.

“As a result, no school owner should organize such gatherings henceforth,” the ministry stated.

The government further warned that any school found violating the directive would face appropriate sanctions.

School administrators have also been instructed to give the circular the widest publicity possible to ensure compliance among stakeholders.

The circular was signed by A.A. Bisiriyu, Director of Education (Private Schools), on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

The development is expected to generate discussions among school owners, parents, and education stakeholders, as graduation ceremonies and end-of-session celebrations have become common practices in many schools across Ogun State.

According to the victim's relative, the woman was kidnapped while pregnant and gave birth in the bandits' camp. Turji organized a naming ceremony for the child, bought a ram for the occasion, and then added the expenses of the ceremony onto the overall ransom fee to recoup his money from the family.

A caller on Brekete Radio today said his brother's wife was kidnapped, gave birth in bandit captivity, and Bello Turji named the child after himself before increasing the ransom, saying he bought a ram for the naming ceremony.

Woman and her husband arrested for attempting to sell off her sister’s baby

The Idumebo Security Network in Esan Central of Edo state have arrested a Benue woman identified as Charity Jacob, and her husband, John, for plotting to sell off her sister’s child for N3 million.

In a video making the rounds on social media, the members of the community security network said they received an intel that a woman and a man were about to sell a baby to an intending buyer. Acting on the intel received, the security operatives immediately stormed the place where the negotiation was taking place and apprehended the suspects.

The security agents say the suspects were negotiating to sell the baby for N3 million.

When interrogated, Charity confirmed that the baby she was planning to sell belonged to her sister who had no idea she was scheming to sell her child. She also mentioned that she had been planning with her husband to sell off the child

Ghana’s parliament on Friday ‌approved a new bill that criminalizes the promotion of LGBTQ activity in the country.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, ​2025, passed by a voice vote after the Constitutional and Legal Affairs ​Committee unanimously recommended its adoption, first deputy speaker Bernard Ahiafor said.

The ⁠bill was introduced last year shortly after President John Dramani Mahama took office.

Lawmakers ​from Mahama’s political party, the National Democratic Congress, had been urged by religious ​leaders and other supporters of the bill to vote on it, and Mahama will now face pressure to sign.

The bill passed an earlier version of the bill in 2024, under Mahama’s ​predecessor, President Nana Akufo-Addo, but it faced legal challenges and Akufo-Addo never ​signed it into law.

The bill approved on Friday maintains the existing penalty of up to three ‌years ⁠in prison for same-sex sexual acts.

It also bans “funding, sponsorship or promotion” of LGBTQ acts, with prison terms ranging from three to five years.

And it introduces a “duty to report” prohibited LGBTQ acts to a police officer or other authorities, ​with violators facing ​up to three ⁠years behind bars.

The bill further amends Ghana’s Extradition Act of 1960 to make offences under the new law extraditable offences.
