Solution 1:

Prostate cancer affects the prostate gland, the gland that produces some of the fluid in semen and plays a role in urine control in men.

Symptoms

There are usually no symptoms during the early stages of prostate cancer. However, if symptoms do appear, they usually involve one or more of
the following:

-frequent urges to urinate, including at night

-difficulty commencing and maintaining urination

-blood in the urine

Treatment

Treatment is different for early and advanced prostate cancers.

Early stage prostate cancer

If the cancer is small and localized, it is usually managed by one of the following treatments:

Watchful waiting or monitoring: PSA blood levels are regularly checked, but there is no immediate action. The risk of side-effects sometimes outweighs the need for immediate treatment for this slow-developing cancer.

Radical prostatectomy: The prostate is surgically removed. Traditional surgery requires a hospital stay of up to 10 days, with a recovery time of up to 3 months. Robotic keyhole surgery involves a shorter hospitalization and recovery period, but it can be more expensive. Patients should speak to their insurer about coverage.

Brachytherapy: Radioactive seeds are implanted into the prostate to deliver targeted radiation treatment.

Conformal radiation therapy: Radiation beams are shaped so that the region where they overlap is as close to the same shape as the organ or region that requires treatment. This minimizes healthy tissue exposure to radiation.

Intensity modulated radiation therapy: Beams with variable intensity are used. This is an advanced form of conformal radiation therapy.

In the early stages, patients may receive radiation therapy combined with hormone therapy for 4 to 6 months.

Treatment recommendations depend on individual cases. The patient should discuss all available options with their urologist or oncologist.

Advanced prostate cancer

Advanced cancer is more aggressive and will have spread further throughout the body.

Chemotherapy may be recommended, as it can kill cancer cells around the body.

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), or androgen suppression therapy, is a hormone treatment that reduces the effect of androgen. Androgens are male hormones that can stimulate cancer growth. ADT can slow down and even stop cancer growth by reducing androgen levels.

The patient will likely need long-term hormone therapy.

Even if the hormone therapy stops working after a while, there may be other options. Participation in clinical trials is one option that a patient may wish to discuss with the doctor.

Radical prostatectomy is not currently an option for advanced cases, as it does not treat the cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.

Fertility

As the prostate is directly involved with sexual reproduction, removing it affects semen production and fertility.

Radiation therapy affects the prostate tissue and often reduces the ability to father children. The sperm can be damaged and the semen insufficient for transporting sperm.

Non-surgical options, too, can severely inhibit a man's reproductive capacity.

Options for preserving these functions can include donating to a sperm bank before surgery, or having sperm extracted directly from the testicles for artificial insemination into an egg. However, the success of these options is never guaranteed.

Patients with prostate cancer can speak to a fertility doctor if they still intend to father children.

What causes prostate cancer?

The prostate is a walnut-sized exocrine gland. This means that its fluids and secretions are intended for use outside of the body.

The prostate produces the fluid that nourishes and transports sperm on their journey to fuse with a female ovum, or egg, and produce human life. The prostate contracts and forces these fluids out during orgasm.

The protein excreted by the prostate, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), helps semen retain its liquid state. An excess of this protein in the blood is one of the first signs of prostate cancer.

The urethra is tube through which sperm and urine exit the body. It also passes through the prostate.

As such, the prostate is also responsible for urine control. It can tighten and restrict the flow of urine through the urethra using thousands of tiny muscle fibers.

How does it start?

It usually starts in the glandular cells. This is known as adenocarcinoma. Tiny changes occur in the shape and size of the prostate gland cells, known as prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN). This tends to happen slowly and does not show symptoms until further into the progression.

Nearly 50 percent of all men over the age of 50 years have PIN. High-grade PIN is considered pre-cancerous, and it requires further investigation. Low-grade PIN is not a cause for concern.

Prostate cancer can be successfully treated if it is diagnosed before metastasis, but if it spreads, it is more dangerous. It most commonly spreads to the bones.

Stages

Staging takes into account the size and extent of the tumor and the scale of the metastasis (whether it has traveled to other organs and tissues).

At Stage 0, the tumor has neither spread from the prostate gland nor invaded deeply into it. At Stage 4, the cancer has spread to distant sites and organs.

Diagnosis

A doctor will carry out a physical examination and enquire about any ongoing medical history. If the patient has symptoms, or if a routine blood test shows abnormally high PSA levels, further examinations may be requested.

Tests may include:

-a digital rectal examination (DRE), in which a doctor will manually check for any abnormalities of the prostate with their finger

-a biomarker test checking the blood, urine, or body tissues of a person with cancer for chemicals unique to individuals with cancer

If these tests show abnormal results, further tests will include:

-a PCA3 test examining the urine for the PCA3 gene only found in prostate cancer cells

-a transrectal ultrasound scan providing imaging of the affected region using a probe that emits sounds

-a biopsy, or the removal of 12 to 14 small pieces of tissue from several areas of the prostate for examination under a microscope

These will help confirm the stage of the cancer, whether it has spread, and what treatment is appropriate.

To track any spread, or metastasis, doctors may use a bone, CT scan, or MRI scan

Outlook

If the disease is found before it spreads to other organs in a process known as metastasis, the 5-year survival rate is 99 percent. After fifteen years, this decreases to 96 percent. Once the cancer metastasizes, or spreads, the 5-year survival rate is 29 percent.

Regular screening can help detect prostate cancer while it is still treatable.

Risk factors

The exact cause of prostate cancer is unclear, but there are many possible risk factors.

Age

Prostate cancer is rare among men under the age of 45 years, but more common after the age of 50 years.

Geography

Prostate cancer occurs most frequently in North America, northwestern Europe, on the Caribbean islands, and in Australia. The reasons remain unclear.

Genetic factors

Certain genetic and ethnic groups have an increased risk of prostate cancer.

In the U.S., prostate cancer is at least 60 percent more common and 2 to 3 times more deadly among black men than non-Hispanic white men.

A man also has a much higher risk of developing cancer if his identical twin has it, and a man whose brother or father had prostate cancer has twice the risk of developing it compared to other men. Having a brother who has or has had prostate cancer is more of a genetic risk than having a father with the disease.

Diet

Studies have suggested that a diet high in red meat or high-fat dairy products may increase a person's chances of developing prostate cancer, but the link is neither confirmed nor clear

Medication

Some research has suggested that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Others have linked NSAID use with a higher risk of death from the disease. This is a controversial area, and results have not been confirmed.

There has also been some investigation into whether statins might slow the progression of prostate cancer. One 2016 study concluded that results were "weak and inconsistent."

Obesity

It is often believed that obesity is linked to the development of prostate cancer, but the American Cancer Society maintains that there is no clear link.

Some studies have found that obesity increases the risk of death in advanced cancers. Studies have also concluded that obesity decreases the risk that a cancer will be low-grade if it does occur.

Agent Orange

Exposure to Agent Orange, a chemical weapon used in the Vietnam war, may possibly be linked to the development of more aggressive types of cancer, but the extent of this has not been confirmed.

There may not be butterflies in your stomach, but there are certainly sparks in your gut.
Some types of bacteria that are either commonly consumed or already found in our guts can create electricity, according to a new study published Wednesday (Sept. 12) in the Journal Nature.

Electricity-generating, or "electrogenic," bacteria aren't something new — they can be found in places far away from us, like at the bottom of lakes, said senior author Daniel Portnoy, a microbiologist at the University of California, Berkeley.
But until now, scientists had no idea that bacteria found in decaying plants or in mammals, especially farm animals, could also generate electricity — and in a much simpler manner, Portnoy said.

In the lab, Portnoy and his team first grew a batch of Listeria monocytogenes, a species of bacteria, that we often eat that sometimes causes an infection called listeriosis. This type of food poisoning typically is most dangerous for those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women (it can cause miscarriages), newborns and elderly people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
By placing the bacteria in an electrochemical chamber and capturing the generated electrons with a wire, or electrode, the team found that these foodborne bacteria created an electrical current.

Why the shock?

There are several reasons why some bacteria generate electricity, such as to remove electrons produced by metabolism, according to a statement. But the main purpose is to create energy, Portnoy said.
But Listeria monocytogenes has "other ways of generating energy too," such as through using oxygen, said lead author Sam Light, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. This electricity-generating process is "probably a back-up system that they use under certain conditions." For example, they may deploy it in low-oxygen conditions of the gut.

The researchers screened mutated bacteria — those with missing or altered genes — to identify which genes were necessary for the bacteria to produce electricity. Those genes in turn code for certain proteins that are key to producing electricity.
They found that the system these bacteria used — a cascade of proteins that carry the electrons out of the bacteria — was much simpler than systems other electrogenic bacteria (such as those living at the bottom of a lake) use.

Most other previous systems were found in gram-negative bacteria, or those with a cell wall composed of two layers that separates the inside from the environment. These recently analyzed bacteria are gram-positive, which means their cell walls have only one layer. "That means there's one less hurdle," for the electrons to reach the outside, Light told Live Science.

But once the electrons do reach the outside, it's unclear where they go. Electrogenic bacteria elsewhere typically transfer the electrons to minerals like iron or manganese in their environment. In the research team's experiments, the electrons flowed into the electrode. In the gut, a number of different molecules, such as iron, could potentially bind to and accept electrons, Light said.

They also found that the bacteria needed flavin proteins to survive. Flavin, a variant of vitamin B2, densely populates the gut. The researchers later found that the bacteria not only needed flavin to survive, but that extra, free-floating flavin in the surrounding environment could enhance the bacteria's electrical activity.

Energy-generating bacteria

Once they knew which genes were responsible for electricity generation, the team further identified hundreds of other microbes that generate electricity using this simpler process — a number of them commonly reside in the gut, while others are important in fermenting yogurt or serving as probiotics.

In a commentary published in Nature the same day, University of Illinois microbiologists Laty Cahoon and Nancy Freitag, who were not involved in the study, wrote, "It is a shock to the system to consider that microbes might be living highly charged lives in our gut." Knowledge of this new electricity-generating pathway "might create opportunities for the design of bacteria-based energy-generating technologies," the researchers wrote.

There are already efforts to create microbial fuel cells, or batteries that use bacteria to generate electricity using organic matter, like in waste-treatment plants. Because this new process is simpler, there's a chance it can improve such technology, but it's too soon to say for sure, Light said.

He personally is more interested in understanding exactly what is going on in the gut — which molecules receive electrons from the bacteria and how this process affects bacterial survival.

Rapper, MI Abaga, who just recently released an album, was a guest on a talk show called ‘Orin Conversations’ where he talked about many issues including the state of hip-hop genre in Nigeria.

The cause: synthetic cannabinoids, also known as K2, Spice, or AK47, which induced retching, vomiting, loss of consciousness and trouble breathing. On July 19, 2018, the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers that another batch of synthetic C had been laced with rat poison. In 10 states and the District of Columbia, hundreds of people were hospitalized with severe bleeding, and four people died.

Many parts of the country have seen episodic crises due to synthetic marijuana, the largest occurring in Mississippi, where 721 adverse events were logged between April 2-3, 2015.
Even with outbreaks aside, synthetic cannabinoids are 30 times more likely to harm you than regular marijuana. Even with these risks, 7 percent of high school seniors and approximately 17 percent of adults have tried synthetic cannabinoids. It is easy to understand why these synthetic substitutes are alluring. They are easy to purchase, relatively inexpensive, produce a more potent high and don’t emit the typical marijuana scent. And, they are much harder to detect in the urine or blood than marijuana.

As an intensive care pharmacist and clinical pharmacologist, I have been researching street drugs for over a decade to help emergency room, critical care and poison control clinicians treat overdosing patients.

Why is using synthetic marijuana risky?

When you open a packet of a synthetic cannabinoid like K2 or Spice and pour the dried vegetation into your hand, it looks like marijuana. These dried leaves and stems can be inert or come from psychoactive plants like Wild Dagga. Some of these plants are contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, mold or salmonella.

However, synthetic cannabinoids are anything but natural. They are mass-produced overseas and then shipped in bulk to the U.S., where they are dissolved and then mixed with dried vegetation, which absorbs the liquid. This process is very imprecise, so the dose in one packet can differ greatly within or between batches.

There are several hundred synthetic cannabinoids in existence, and they all stimulate cannabinoid type 1 receptors (CB1), just like the active component in natural marijuana, THC, that provides the high. But they do so with different intensities and for differing periods of time. Some incorporate the central ring structure of the THC molecule before laboratory modification, but many others do not. More problems arise because some of the synthetic cannabinoids stimulate non-cannabinoid receptors and can cause unanticipated effects as well. There is no way to know which synthetic cannabinoids are actually in the product you purchased.

Natural marijuana does not comprise only THC. The other constituents in natural marijuana such as cannabidiol actually help to temper the negative impact of THC but are absent in synthetic cannabinoids. In addition to these myriad risks, there is also a risk that synthetic cannabinoids can be adulterated with other chemicals, ranging from opioids to rat poison.

Synthetic cannabinoids were initially designed by legitimate researchers in the U.S. and around the world who were looking to explore the function and structure of cannabinoid receptors. They did not intend for illegal drug labs to use their recipe to mass-produce these synthetic cannabinoids.

What are the consequences of using these drugs?

In addition to giving the user a high, the primary psychological and neurological effects of synthetic cannabinoid use include anxiety, agitation and paranoia, although psychosis and seizures have also occurred. The anxiety and psychosis can cause the heart to beat fast and even trigger heart attacks or strokes when the body’s adrenaline gets flowing.

Many people suffer upset stomach with synthetic cannabinoids, and vomiting is also common (which is paradoxical, since medical marijuana is used to prevent vomiting). Finally, there is a risk that synthetic cannabinoids can damage both the muscles and kidneys.
Rarely, people reported having trouble breathing, but in some cases this is due to adrenaline release. In other cases, the butane that was used to extract THC from marijuana before laboratory alteration was not removed. The butane ignites during smoking and damages the lungs. Early detection and aggressive treatment for all of these adverse events can help to prevent severe adverse events or death.

What can we do to protect ourselves?

Many of the risks of synthetic cannabinoids and other illegal drugs of abuse arise because of contamination, adulteration, substitution and inconsistent dosages. As long as people are able to manufacture, transport and sell these drugs secretly, there is no way to assure buyers of a consistent quality product.

Public health personnel, teachers and parents need to educate adults and students alike about the inherent risks of the drugs in their pure form but should also include the risks associated with poor manufacturing practices.
People generally prefer natural marijuana to synthetic forms, but as long as natural marijuana remains illegal, highly desired, easily detected and periodically unavailable, the desire to purchase synthetic forms will persist.

Finally, synthetic cannabinoids are primarily manufactured overseas. Foreign governments, especially in Asia, need to crack down on illegal drug factories and better scan freight for illegal drugs. In addition, all shipping companies need to do more to detect the illegal transport of drugs into the United States. There are hand-held detectors that can help identify some but not most synthetic cannabinoids. However, detection will still be painstakingly slow.

However Juventus boss Allegri thinks the Portuguese superstar will find it tough to achieve such feat in the Italian topflight as goals are tougher to come by. "Italian football presents different problems and it takes time," Allegri said. "He’s not getting the rub of the green at the moment either – the ball is not bouncing right for him or he’s shooting just off target.

"They study every match to try not to concede space to the other teams. "Everyone puts Serie A down but it’s very difficult for a player to score 40 goals a season. "Gonzalo Higuain did it once, but was an extraordinary feat. "Usually the top scorer in Italy scores 26 or 27 goals. And usually the top scorer in Italy never wins the title. So maybe it’s better for us,” the highly-respected football tactician submitted.

When a woman is pregnant, a baby is growing inside her. If a woman uses drugs or alcohol* when she is pregnant, the drugs can pass to her baby.

Some drugs can cause the baby to go through withdrawal right after they are born. This means that the drug is in the baby's body, and can make the baby sick. It takes time for the drug to get out of the baby's body.

This sickness is called "neonatal abstinence syndrome" or NAS. You might hear doctors use this term or see it in articles. Some of the drugs that can cause a baby to be born with NAS are:

-alcohol

-pain medicine (prescription opioids)

-heroin (illegal opioids)

-certain drugs for anxiety or sleep, like Xanax® or Valium®

-Babies born to mothers who used drugs while pregnant also might:

-be born small

-have problems eating and sleeping

-have problems seeing, hearing, and moving
be slow to develop

While growing up, the child might:

-have memory problems

-have trouble paying attention and learning in school

-need special teachers and schools

-have trouble getting along with others

-use or misuse drugs or develop an addiction

Children whose mothers used drugs while they were pregnant sometimes need special medical care all their lives. Some might not be able to live on their own when they grow up.

Programs can help pregnant women stop using drugs. This can help the baby a lot. If a pregnant woman wants to stop using drugs, it is very important that she gets help from a doctor. If a pregnant woman tries to stop using drugs on her own, it could hurt the baby.

It can be hard for any person with a drug problem to quit. But women in particular might be afraid to get help during or after pregnancy.

They might be scared of:

-getting in trouble

-people taking away the baby or their other kids

-people judging them

-not having anyone to watch their other kids

There is good treatment available for moms and babies. Pregnant women receiving medical treatment should talk with their doctor about a treatment plan.

Apple will almost certainly take the wraps off its latest iPhones on Sept. 12. The company has just sent invitations to members of the press for a media gathering at its Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California, on that date, one year to the day when Tim Cook took the Steve Jobs Theater stage to unleash the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models, along with the iPhone X that was not only the first iPhone to crack $1,000, but also the first to ditch the Home button. (The 8 and 8 Plus shipped soon after; the X didn’t reach buyers until November.)

The invite featured two main words: "Gather round."
Speculation this time around is that Apple could unveil three new iPhones, including a relatively ginormous iPhone X Plus of sorts, which is expected to have a 6.5-inch screen, making it by far the largest handset Apple has ever introduced.
If true, one of my initial questions is this: With such a large screen, how much of a footprint will the overall device have to have? And just how much, of course, will it cost?

The current X has a 5.8-inch display that Apple has managed to squeeze into a relatively compact display given its size. Despite surpassing a four-digit price tag, the X has become Apple's best-selling iPhone.
A second rumored new entry promises the same 5.8-inch size screen as the X, only with more robust specs. A third, 6.1-inch model could be categorized as more of a budget handset, at least budget by Apple’s standards. Translation: Cheaper, but not cheap.

The best guess here is that all of the new phones, like the X before them, will do away with the Home button, in favor of touch gestures and the Face ID facial recognition system that also debuted on the X.
We already know, of course, that the phones will feature iOS 12, the operating system at the core of the Apple’s phones and iPad tablets.

Now in public beta, the software will add Screen Time digital addiction tools and parental controls, and Group FaceTime chats, among other features and tools. The new software also makes navigation slightly easier for models without a Home button compared to iOS 11, perhaps reducing the learning barrier for some users.

Apple's September event is likely to go well beyond iPhones. Apple could showcase a slew of other products, including a fresh Apple Watch, second-generation (and water-resistant?) AirPods, and maybe several new Macs, perhaps even a long overdue makeover for its MacBook Air notebook.

“The idea of an automatic ticket to representatives whose state the party is not having a governor is clearly and totally unacceptable. Any attempt at enforcing such will surely lead to the Mass exodus and the eventual collapse of the party at all level.

“Also, a kangaroo primary in whatever form would be vehemently resisted. Let the people decide, the people own the party and not those leading the party. It’s been almost a year since Tennis star, Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian Sr, welcomed their daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr on September 1, 2017.

Serena told Vogue last year about what the religion meant to her.

First there was high carb, then there was low carb and now there's … medium carb?

It may not sound as sexy, but eating carbohydrates in moderation may be best for boosting longevity, a large new study suggests.
The study, which involved more than 15,000 Americans who were tracked for a quarter of a century, found that those who ate a low-carb diet (with less than 40 percent of daily calories coming from carbs) or a high-carb diet (with more than 70 percent of daily calories coming from carbs) were more likely to die during the study period, compared with those who ate a moderate-carb diet, with about 50 to 55 percent of their calories coming from carbs.

For example, based on the findings, the researchers estimated that from age 50, people who consumed a moderate-carb diet would have a life expectancy that was about four years longer than those who consumed a very low-carb diet (with an average life expectancy of 83 years for moderate-carb eaters versus 79 years for very low-carb eaters).

But it wasn't all bad news for people following low-carb diets. In the second part of the study, published today (Aug. 16) in the journal The Lancet Public Health, the researchers examined the effect of replacing carbs with either animal-based or plant-based proteins and fats. They found that low-carb diets that involved people consuming animal-based proteins and fats were linked with a greater risk of early death, but low-carb diets that involved people consuming plant-based proteins and fats were linked with a reduced risk of early death.

"Low-carb diets that replace carbohydrates with protein or fat are gaining widespread popularity as a health and weight loss strategy," lead study author Dr. Sara Seidelmann, a research fellow in cardiovascular medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, said in a statement. "However, our data suggests that animal-based low carbohydrate diets, which are prevalent in North America and Europe, might be associated with shorter overall life span."

Still, Seidelmann said that "if one chooses to follow a low carbohydrate diet, then exchanging carbohydrates for more plant-based fats and proteins might actually promote healthy ageing in the long term."
Carbs and longevity
Low-carb diets can help people lose weight in the short term, numerous studies have found; but the long-term health effects of the diets are less clear.

In the new study, the researchers examined information from nearly 15,500 adults ages 45 to 64 from four communities in North Carolina, Mississippi, Minnesota and Maryland. At the start of the study in the late 1980s, and again six years later, participants completed surveys about the types of foods they ate and how often.
Participants were followed for about 25 years, during which 6,283 people died.

The researchers found that the link between carb intake and life expectancy was U-shaped; meaning that, during the study, both low- and high-carb diets were linked with a greater risk of death, while moderate-carb diets were linked with a lower risk of death.
The researchers then pulled data from seven other studies, as well as their own study, to perform a separate analysis involving more than 432,000 people in 20 countries. This analysis confirmed the researchers' earlier findings: Low- and high-carb diets were linked with a 20 percent increase in the risk of death during the study, compared with moderate-carb diets.

But the analysis also found that, with low-carb diets, what mattered was the source of proteins and fats. Diets that involved replacing carbs with proteins and fats from animal sources, including beef, lamb, pork, chicken and cheese, were linked with a greater risk of death. In contrast, diets that involved replacing carbs with proteins and fats from plant sources, such as vegetables, legumes and nuts, were tied to a lower risk of death.

Study caveats

The researchers noted that their study only found an association and did not prove that low- or high-carb diets were the cause of the increase in early death risk. What's more, the study only assessed people's diets at two points in time, and it's possible that participants' diets may have changed during the 25-year study, which could have affected the results.
Despite these limitations, a U-shaped link between diet and health outcomes seems logical, because "essential nutrients should be consumed above a minimal level to avoid deficiency, and below a maximal level to avoid toxicity," Dr. Andrew Mente and Dr. Salim Yusuf, both of McMaster University and the Population Health Research Institute in Hamilton, Canada, wrote in a commentary accompanying the study. In other words, a "sweet spot." (Mente and Yusuf were not involved with the new research.)

"On the basis of these principles, moderate intake of carbohydrate … is likely to be more appropriate for the general population than are very low or very high intakes. This would translate to a generally balanced diet that includes fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, fish, dairy, and unprocessed meats—all in moderation," Mente and Yusuf wrote.

Still, the commentary called for more studies that look at the effect of eating carbs on certain biomarkers; as well as studies that randomly assign people to follow certain dietary patterns, rather than focusing on specific nutrients.

A 1491 map that likely influenced Christopher Columbus's conception of world geography is getting a new lease on life, now that researchers have revealed its faded, hidden detail
with cutting-edge technology.

Researchers pulled off this feat by turning to multispectral imaging, a powerful digital tool that can recover texts and images on damaged documents, said the project's leader, Chet Van Duzer, a board member of the multispectral imaging group known as The Lazarus Project at the University of Rochester in New York.

"Almost all of the writing on the map had faded to illegibility, making it an almost unstudyable object," Van Duzer told Live Science. But after the high-tech imaging uncovered the map's minutia, he was able to show that this 527-year-old map not only influenced Columbus but was also integral to Martin Waldseemüller's legendary 1507 map, which was the first to call the New World by the name "America." Long and winding road

The map — created by German cartographer Henricus Martellus in Florence — shows the world as Westerners knew it in 1491, right before Columbus set sail. In his 4-foot by 6.6-foot (1.2 by 2 meters) map, Africa (albeit, a greatly lopsided one) in on the left; above Africa is Europe, with Asia to the east; and Japan sits near the far-right corner.
Of course, the map doesn't show North and South America, which were still unknown to the Western world. (Although, arguably, the Vikings likely settled parts of Canada in about A.D. 1000.)

The map is so old, it has a somewhat murky provenance. It reportedly belonged to a family in Tuscany, Italy, for years before it resurfaced in Bern, Switzerland, in the 1950s. Then, it was sold and anonymously donated to Yale University in 1962, Van Duzer wrote in his new book, "Henricus Martellus's World Map at Yale (c.1491)," which Springer is publishing next week.
The paper map was already extremely faded in the 1960s. So, Yale researchers attempted to decipher its text by taking ultraviolet photos of it. These images revealed previously unknown text on the map, but it didn't reveal all of the map, Van Duzer said.
Revealing technology
Intrigued, Van Duzer secured a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, partnered with The Lazarus Project and spent 10 days photographing Martellus' map at Yale's Beinecke Library.

The team used a number of different wavelengths to photograph the map, from ultraviolet to infrared, "because Martellus was using different pigments to write this text, and they respond differently to light," Van Duzer said.
Roger Easton, a professor at the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology, in New York, sifted through the various images, noting which aspects looked best in different wavelengths. Then, he made digital composite images that revealed the illegible elements on Martellus' map.
The entire process took months, Van Duzer said. "[It] was very exciting and very gratifying" when he finally saw the digitally enhanced copy, he said.

Inspiring map

For starters, the map doesn't have sea monsters, as many other maps from the Renaissance do. That's because many cartographers weren't skilled illustrators and would often pay an artist to paint the monsters for them. This, in turn, increased the cost of the map, which commissioners sometimes couldn't afford, Van Duzer said.

Martellus used a number of books to inform his map, including the 1491 book "Hortus Sanitatis," which describes animals around the known world. He also gleaned knowledge from the 1441-43 Council of Florence, where African people talked about the geography of their homeland.
As for being an inspiration, Columbus likely saw this map (or at least another version of it), Van Duzer said. In a biography, Ferdinand Columbus noted that his father thought that Japan ran north-south, like it does on this map. And Martellus' creation was the only map of Japan at the time showing this orientation, Van Duzer said. In essence, this map likely influenced Columbus' ideas about the geography of Asia.

In addition, Martellus' map likely influenced Waldseemüller's 1507 map. Waldseemüller described the New World as "America" based on the misconception that the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci had discovered the New World. Once Waldseemüller realized his error, he tried to change it, but it was too late: The name "America" had caught on, and was here to stay, Van Duzer said.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has asked the federal government to provide its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as part of preconditions for reconciliation between it and the Nigerian government.
The group met Wednesday with a delegation of Igbo leaders in Enugu in continuation of their deliberation on peaceful reconciliation between them and the federal government as well as governments of the South-east zone.

“The fate of our brother Nnamdi Kanu must be addressed. If the witch cried at night and the baby died in the morning, the witch must have killed the baby. Nnamdi Kanu did not rise and disappear. He is not the biblical prophet Elijah that got transfigured to heaven alive,” Aloy Ejimakor, German-based lawyer, who led the IPOB delegation said after the closed door meeting.

“Something happened; some people came to his house and those people are the men of the Nigerian Armed Forces. They (military) should speak to Nigerians and say, we went there, shot at people. Maybe we shot at him or wounded him. Let them say that much, then we know that the reconciliation has begun.

“So I recommend that if it is the truth and reconciliation commission that the federal government wants to constitute, let them do that. But some of these things need to be ventilated well. You cannot just come to Igboland or any other part of the country and take their dignity away, and behave as if nothing happened.

“The dignity of the Igboland and Biafra has been taken away since 2017 in the incident that took place at Afaraukwu, Umuahia. It shouldn’t happen. It needs some explanation, an apology is warranted.”

When Prophet T.B. The goings-on within the country’s existence have drawn both local and international concerns considering the immense presence that Nigeria commands both in Africa and in the larger comity of nations

Nigeria’s road to the 2019 general election has been a potpourri of inanities. The disturbing trend signals a most trying period for the democratic experiment which Nigeria currently undertakes. It was therefore a sobering moment when Prophet Joshua devoted few minutes during one of the Sunday services to speak God’s mind concerning Nigeria. Knowing God’s mind is in itself a blessing; however, it is more blessed to obey what He says. It therefore should be counted divine benevolence when a nation has a prophet that knows God and speaks His mind.

The various saddening trends within our nation’s polity: insurrections, killings, kidnappings, hate, among others, continue to cast a negative shadow on our existence. It is therefore only right to join Prophet TB Joshua as he prayed saying: “…the Lord will give our leaders greater understanding of God’s heart. …The Lord should give them the understanding and discretion to guide their hearts. The Lord will give them understanding that will protect them and wisdom that will rescue them.”

God appreciates the place of good leadership; it was therefore not surprising when the Almighty God directed His servant to pray for the leadership of Nigeria. Once the leadership is right, the nation will be put on the right path. Good governance requires the fear of God and it is righteousness that guarantees the growth and wellbeing of any country.

As we match towards another election year, we must heed, collectively, to the voice of God and ensure that we do his bidding. We cannot again slide into another civil war as this would rubbish the progress we have recorded so far. These are not ordinary times and they are indeed moments when all hands must be on deck to salvage our nation from descending into anarchy that may result from a failed election year. The 2019 general election should be seen as a rallying moment to improve negotiations for the betterment of Nigeria.

Any interruption with our current democratic experience will not be in the interest of Nigeria, its citizens and the larger global community. Africa has a lot to gain should Nigeria’s democracy get strengthened. Conversely, Africa’s losses would be gargantuan should Nigeria slide into a lawless state.

The unique sense of camaraderie comes to fore when the globally respected Prophet Joshua identifies with Nigeria as his own. He started by saying “I have a message for my country and I want you to pray with me.” This should be a lesson to all that irrespective of the current state of Nigeria, we owe the nation allegiance never to give up on the wellbeing of its existence. Obviously, by the public distil of the prophecy from Prophet Joshua, God is interested in the welfare of the nations. We are the works of His hands; He made us and therefore owns us. It is therefore incumbent on our leaders to heed the voice of God’s oracles to seek divine intervention so that our democracy improves and remains in perpetuity.

As citizens, we are bound by conscience, morality and the law to seek the welfare of our country. Developed countries of the world had their teething problems which later gave way to strings of development. We are passing through ours and with God on our side things would only get better. Yet, we must heed the call by God’s servant which says that both leaders and followers must pray against interruption of democratic practice in Nigeria. This is important and doable.

Try to find the least abrasive polishes you can or avoid polishing all together, if possible.

Wax Your Car

Wax will give you a shine that rivals polishes. It has a couple of advantages over polish, though. It doesn't remove any of the surface through abrasion. Instead, it adds an extra layer over your car's finish. That provides additional protection. Be careful to avoid over-waxing, though, because it can build up over time and affect the look of the vehicle.

You can't fool time and it will eventually take a toll on your paint color by fading it. There are things you can do to slow this process. Through proper care you can keep your car looking newer for a lot longer.

Ultra-fast fiber optic internet service is now up and running in Elmira Heights, and village officials celebrated the arrival of Empire Access on Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Empire Access, based in Prattsburgh in Steuben County, started as a local telephone company more than 100 years ago, and in recent years has been providing fiber optic internet service to a growing number of Southern Tier communities.
Elmira Heights is the latest, and while the service has been operational for three months, officials from the village and Chemung County and representatives from Empire Access took the opportunity Tuesday to mark a successful launch.

The service is available for businesses and residential customers, along with other organizations, and the Elmira Heights Village Hall was one of the first places to hook up.
"We've had no problems. It's really quite fast and creating jobs for our area is a real plus," said Elmira Heights Mayor Margaret Smith. "Plus it's saving us a lot of money. It's giving us a substantial savings for the village."

Empire Access, using optical fiber technology developed by Corning Inc., provides "the fastest internet in town," according to Chief Operating Officer Jim Baase.

In addition to internet service, the company provides digital TV, phone and security services, all with fiber optic connections that are up to 10 times faster than cable or DSL internet services, according to Empire officials.
The fee for basic phone and internet service for residential customers — including download speeds of one gigabit per second — is $65 a month.
Elmira Heights is the latest of several communities that have added Empire Access service, and the company plans to continue to spread across the Southern Tier, Baase said.

"Our goal over the next year is to build connections in Horseheads, the City of Elmira, the Town of West Elmira, and the Town of Southport," he said. "We are already in Big Flats, Corning, Sayre-Waverly, Bath, Hornell, Hammondsport, Watkins Glen, Montour Falls and Batavia.
"We've doubled our workforce, adding 60 jobs in the last four years, many in the Elmira area," Baase said. "We plan to add 30 to 40 more jobs in the next three to four years."

This is the worst defeat for Serena Williams, who made a near-winning comeback to her sport in the 2018 Wimbledon Championships following the birth of her first child.

But a little more than two weeks after her triumphant return, the 23-time Grand Slam champion suffered the worst defeat of her 23-year professional tennis career, marking a major roadblock in her journey to the U.S. Open less than a month away.

Williams was knocked out in the first round of the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, California, on Tuesday after losing straight sets (6-1, 6-0) in 53 minutes at the hands of United Kingdom’s Johanna Konta. She had never before lost a match without winning at least two games.

“I think she played well in the second set, and I think I wasn’t sharp at all in the first set,” the 36-year-old told reporters. “She got confident, and she clearly ran away with it.”

- The tricycle rider and his wife welcomed their quintuplets in Anambra state
- They welcomed four male children and one female child Abuchi Odoh, a commercial tricyclist popularly known as keke napep rider, has welcomed five bouncing babies with his wife Ndidi. The couple welcomed their babies on Thursday, July 26.

The 30-year-old wife who is a seamstress delivered four male children and one female child through cesarean surgery at God's Mercy Maternity Home in Obiuno Otolo, Nnewi area of Anambra state. It was gathered that the couple already had three girls who were born in single births and a set of male triplets. Two of the triplets boys had sadly passed away three months after were brought into the world.

According to the husband who reacted to the news of the newborn babies, he never hoped for quintuplets due to the fact that he was struggling to feed his family. The 40-year-old keke napep driver revealed that he had considered the possibility of running away from the responsibility of taking care of them. He noted that running away was not because he did not appreciate the blessing. He further added that he wanted to run becuase he did bnot know where to start raising them from.

Odoh said: “I’m a Keke NAPEP rider. The keke is my own but it is very old. I never expected that my wife would deliver quintuplets. In fact, I was expecting one baby and that was my prayer. I don’t have means to take care of one in addition to the number we have already let alone additional five babies at a go. I’m shocked. This is over blessing. I wanted to run away yesterday but people held me back not because I am not happy for the gift of the babies but because I have nothing to take care of them.”

The 40-year-old father called on Anambra state government and the people of Anambra to come to his rescue. Meanwhile, Blessing Odoemena, the nurse who delivered the babies said: "When she was delivered of the triplets of three male children I celebrated that with them and even planned to hang their picture in my office. But when two of the triplets died it was very painful to the family and me too. I challenged God to prove Himself as the God of impossibilities and the family was surprised with this package of quintuplets. And the babies are very healthy, eating well.”

Up to 70 percent of women with a certain type of breast cancer may not need chemotherapy, a new study finds.
Avoiding chemotherapy may come as a relief to many women who are diagnosed with breast cancer, as the treatment comes with a number of side effects, including nausea, hair loss and anemia.

The study, published yesterday (June 3) in The New England Journal of Medicine, included more than 10,000 women with the same type of breast cancer: early-stage, hormone-receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative breast cancer. (That mouthful refers to three things: that the cancer was found early, that it could bind to certain hormones and that it didn't have the HER2 receptor.) All of the women in the study, called the Trial Assigning Individualized Options for Treatment (Rx), or TAILORx, had their breast tumors analyzed with a molecular test. The test looks at 21 genes and then spits out a score, from zero to 100, that predicts the risk that the breast cancer will return after surgery.

The researchers were specifically interested in women who scored 10 to 25 on the test — scores that fall in the range of a medium risk of the cancer returning after surgery. Women with low risk scores — those below 10 — don't need chemotherapy after surgery, and instead can be treated with hormone therapy, previous studies have found. Similarly, women with high risk scores — above 25 — should receive chemotherapy in addition to hormone therapy. (Hormone therapy is a treatment that blocks or lowers the amounts of specific hormones in the body that help the cancer grow.)
Doctors were unsure, however, whether women in the medium-risk range were benefiting from chemotherapy or just experiencing the side effects.

TAILORx
Out of the 10,000 women enrolled in the TAILORx study, around 6,700 fell in the medium-risk range. These womenrandomly divided into two groups: One group received only hormone therapy after surgery, and the other group received both hormone therapy and chemotherapy.
Then, five and nine years later, the researchers checked in on how the women were doing. They found that there was almost no difference in the cancer-recurrence rates between the women who received just hormone therapy and the women who received both treatments.
After five years, 92.8 percent of the women who received hormone therapy alone, and 93.1 percent of those who received hormone therapy plus chemotherapy, were cancer-free.
After nine years, the cancer-free rates were 83.3 percent for the hormone-therapy-only group and 84.3 percent for the hormone-therapy-plus-chemotherapy group.

At both time points, the difference was so small that it was not considered statistically significant (meaning it could have occurred due to chance), the researchers said in a statement."Until now, we've been able to recommend treatment for women with these cancers at high and low risk of recurrence, but women at intermediate risk have been uncertain about the appropriate strategy to take," study co-author Jeffrey Abrams, associate director of the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program, which supported the trial, said in the statement.

"These findings, [which show] no benefit from receiving chemotherapy plus hormone therapy for most patients in this intermediate-risk group, will go a long way to support oncologists and patients in decisions about the best course of treatment," Abrams said. The researchers noted one caveat to the findings, however: Women who were either premenopausal and/or younger than 50 and fell in the higher part of the medium-risk range (scores of 16 to 25) may have experienced a slight benefit from chemotherapy. These women should discuss chemotherapy with their doctors, the researchers said.
Arnie Purushotham, a senior clinical adviser to Cancer Research UK who was not involved in the study, welcomed the TAILORx results as an important step toward making cancer treatment less harsh for patients.
"By stratifying these breast cancer patients [by risk] and finding that only those with the highest risk of recurrence need to have chemotherapy based on their tumor genetics, TAILORx shows great potential to ensure more gentle treatment without compromising its effectiveness," Purushotham told Live Science.

"We're looking forward to a future where cancer is treated using a personalized approach," he added. "In many cases, we will be able to tailor treatments to the patient and their tumor."
According to the TAILORx researchers, 260,000 women who are diagnosed with breast cancer each year around the world fall into the medium-risk category that wouldn't benefit from chemotherapy.
While cancer survival rates have doubled over the past 40 years, Purushotham added, researchers hope personalized treatment based on genetic profiling will deliver further improvements.

The longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century is coming on July 27, with a totality set to last a full hour and 43 minutes over Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. Nearly 4 hours will pass from the moment Earth's shadow darkens the leading edge of the moon to the moment the moon's full shine returns, according to Earthsky.org.
For comparison, the next lunar eclipse visible from North America, on Jan. 21, 2019, will last just an hour and 2 minutes. The solar eclipse that swept across 14 U.S. states in August 2017 remained in totality for no more than 2 minutes and 40 seconds, according to NASA.So, what's the reason for these huge disparities between eclipses?
Solar eclipses — when the moon blocks the sun's light from reaching Earth — are always way shorter than lunar eclipses, when our planet moves between the sun and moon. That's because of the differences in the shadows involved, said Kaisa Young, an astronomer at Nicholls State University in Louisiana.

"If you think about it from an outside perspective, a solar eclipse is a small moon casting a small shadow on a big planet," she said. "A lunar eclipse is a big planet casting a big shadow on a small moon."When the moon blocks the sun's shadow from hitting Earth, as happens during a solar eclipse, the umbra — the area of complete shadow, where the sun is totally blocked — is a just a few dozen miles wide and zips across the planet. But Earth's umbra is large, and the moon can take a long time to pass through it — especially if it moves through the middle of the shadow, rather then skirting along the edges, she said.But there are also significant differences between different solar eclipses and different lunar eclipses, Young said. And that has everything to do with the different patterns and cycles that govern their behavior.
The Earth, moon and sun aren't in perfect alignment, Young explained. The moon's orbit has about a 5-degree inclination, and it only crosses the same plane as the Earth and sun twice in each of its 27-day orbits. This is the basic pattern that governs every eclipse.
About twice every 11 months, those crossings are timed such that the Earth, moon and sun all end up in a line with one another. Each such alignment happens once — with Earth between the moon and the sun (lunar eclipse) — and once with the moon between Earth and the sun (solar eclipse), Young said.

That's why solar and lunar eclipses tend to come in pairs about two weeks apart from one another, and why there tend to be four total eclipses in a normal year, she added.But not all alignments are created equal, because that 11-month cycle isn't totally regular and stable. Sometimes, the alignment is imperfect, she said, and a shadow just barely crosses part of the Earth or moon. That's what happened on July 13, when the partial solar eclipse twin of the upcoming lunar eclipse glanced across the southern edge of Australia and near-Antarctic waters.
Other times, the alignment is close to exact, and the moon passes through the middle of Earth's shadow, or the moon's shadow passes near Earth's equator. Those eclipses last much longer, Young said.

The final factor impacting the length of an eclipse, she said, is the time of year. In July, Earth reaches the farthest point of its orbit from the sun, and it looks smallest in the sky compared with other times of year. That means that both the Earth and moon cast larger shadows, which take longer to move through. Earth reaches its closest point to the sun in January, so our home star looks especially large in the sky at that time, and the shadows of eclipses are smaller.
That's why the longest eclipses tend to happen when it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and the shortest eclipses occur when it's winter in the Northern Hemisphere.


This upcoming July 27 eclipse, with the moon passing through the middle of Earth's shadow, will be about as long as they come.

New mothers are commonly heaped with advice — some of it welcome, some not. But there's one rather unconventional piece of wisdom that stands out from the rest: For decades, women have been told they should drink Guinness — the dark, Irish beer — to boost their production of breast milk and nourish their newborns. To Guinness lovers, this might be a welcome nugget of advice. But does it stand up to scientific scrutiny?

One thing we do know is that the idea has roots deep in history, long before Guinness came along. In fact, humans have been touting the milk-boosting benefits of beer for centuries. As far back as 2000 B.C., records apparently show that the Sumerian people prescribed beer as an aid for breast-feeding. Along with many other foods — like anise, fenugreek (an herb) and oatmeal — beer developed a reputation as a "galactagogue," a food thought to stimulate lactation. Over the centuries, this became an established belief in traditions around the world.

"It's cross-cultural," said Maija Bruun Haastrup, a clinical pharmacologist at Odense University Hospital in Denmark. "Something I find very interesting is that we have this same old-wives tale everywhere."

In the early 1900s, the marketing campaign around Guinness, in particular, gave it a special identity as a "healthful" beverage. Because the beer initially was manufactured with a kind of yeast that gave it a high iron content, it was reportedly offered to blood donors back in the day, or to patients who had just undergone surgery in the hospital. This helped to solidify the drink's original slogan: "Guinness is good for you." Nursing mothers were then encouraged to imbibe this drink as a milk-boosting tonic, too.
While we now know that the campaign around this beverage may have overstated its benefits at the time, Haastrup said there is some scientific truth to the idea that beer boosts breast milk.

"It's important to emphasize that the amount of research here is quite limited," she cautioned. But some studies have drawn a link between a polysaccharide, a type of carbohydrate present in barley hops, and an increase in prolactin, the hormone that aids the production of milk from breast tissue. These factors might explain why beer drinkers of the past sensed that the beverage had a beneficial effect on their capacity to produce milk.
But there's a caveat: Adding alcohol to this hoppy mixture obscures any potential benefit one might get from the barley. Gary Beauchamp and Julie Mennella, two biopsychologists at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, carried out landmark research in the 1990s showing that when mothers consume alcohol and breast-feed, it seems to alter the flavor of their milk, causing infants to feed less over a certain period of time."Essentially, the hypotheses are that the alcohol is affecting either the infant or the mother," Beauchamp, now emeritus director of the Monell Chemical Senses Center, told Live Science.

In a meta-analysis of more than 40 papers, Haastrup identified another pattern in the research, highlighting how alcohol impacts the way the body discharges milk. Breasts release milk through a reflex known as the "letdown," which is triggered by a hormone called oxytocin, Haastrup said "Oxytocin is extensively inhibited by alcohol," she said. "So if you ingest alcohol, your oxytocin production is reduced, which leads to a delayed milk letdown reflex."What can this research collectively tell us about breast-feeding and booze? On one hand, Beauchamp said, "I think it is important for [mothers] to know that the still-prevalent idea that alcohol consumption somehow enhances breast-feeding has no scientific basis."

On the other hand, Haastrup believes that moderate alcohol consumption is less of a hindrance to milk production than it may appear at first. The letdown seems only to be delayed by alcohol, not entirely stopped, she said. Studies have found that babies nursing from mothers who've consumed an alcoholic drink will still feed as much over a 16-hour period as babies whose mothers haven't imbibed at all.
"There isn't a direct inhibition of milk production caused by alcohol, but it makes it a bit more difficult to start breast-feeding," Haastrup told Live Science.
So, what's the verdict for Guinness? It seems that drinking it to enhance breast-milk production probably isn't the best course of action. For that, alcohol-free beers — with all their barley-rich goodness — might be a better bet. "That's why, in maternity wards in Denmark, they actually recommend alcohol-free beer," Haastrup said. "This is something we've known for ages."But breastfeeding aside, if a nursing mother just feels like having a pint to pass the time while her baby feeds, Haastrup said there's no reason why she shouldn't.

"As far as I can see, there isn't a problem here as long as you follow the general recommendations, only drink occasionally, and drink responsibility," she said. For instance, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that a nursing mother would be wise to wait for two hours after an alcoholic drink, before she feeds her infant again. And sure, the alcohol could trigger a temporary delay in milk production — but then, that might just be worth it for the chance to kick back with the occasional beer.
