Science/TechnologyWhat’s New In Mozilla Firefox 84 by toddhhn(op): 12:38pm On Dec 17, 2020
Mozilla has just released a new version of Firefox, its award-winning browser that’s currently the third most-used app worldwide after Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Earlier this year, Mozilla switched to a four-week release cycle for production builds of Mozilla Firefox, thus accelerating the release cadence and bringing major updates to all supported platforms much faster than before.

While in theory, this is good news for everybody, the problem with this approach is that sometimes Firefox updates can ship with unpolished performance, eventually leading to post-installation problems experienced by users who update the browser.

Firefox 84 is now available for download on supported platforms, and one of the most important changes is full support for Apple Silicon.

As you probably know already, Apple launched the M1 chip in November and the first devices running it are already available for download. And now developers across the world are working around the clock to optimize their solutions and prepare them for Apple Silicon, thus taking full advantage of the improvements the Cupertino-based tech giant has introduced on its very own ARM-based processor.

“Native support for macOS devices built with Apple Silicon CPUs brings dramatic performance improvements over the non-native build that was shipped in Firefox 83: Firefox launches over 2.5 times faster and web apps are now twice as responsive (per the SpeedoMeter 2.0 test),” Mozilla explains.

There are also more WebRender improvements, and they are available on all supported platforms, including Linux.

“WebRender rolls out to MacOS Big Sur, Windows devices with Intel Gen 6 GPUs, and Intel laptops running Windows 7 and 8. Additionally we'll ship an accelerated rendering pipeline for Linux/GNOME/X11 users for the first time, ever!” Mozilla announced today.

Firefox 84 is the last version of the browser to support Adobe Flash Player, so beginning with Firefox 85, the plugin would stop working.

“Firefox version 84 will be the final version to support Flash. Firefox version 85 (release date: January 26, 2021) will ship without Flash support, improving our performance and security. There will be no setting to re-enable Flash support. Adobe and other browsers will also end support Flash at the end of 2020. Even if you install an older version of Firefox, the Flash plugin itself will stop loading Flash content after January 12, 2021,” Mozilla explains.

Of course, the new version of the browser also comes with plenty of security improvements, and this is one of the main reasons you should install version 84. Mozilla says it has resolved several critical and moderate vulnerabilities.

One particular bug resolved with the latest Firefox update concerns the Android version of the browser, which prevents an issue exploited by malicious applications installed on the smartphone.

“When a malicious application installed on the user's device broadcast an Intent to Firefox for Android, arbitrary headers could have been specified, leading to attacks such as abusing ambient authority or session fixation. This was resolved by only allowing certain safe-listed headers,” Mozilla says.

The new version of the browser is available through the built-in update system that’s bundled with Firefox, but at the same time, it can also be downloaded manually using the links in this article.

At the time of writing, there are no reports of issues hitting this new version of Firefox, and this is quite good news given the latest few updates experienced such problems shortly after the rollout started. I’ll continue to monitor the release of the new Firefox version to devices out there and let you know should any problems be discovered.

Science/TechnologySamsung Finally Reveals Its 2021 Roadmap Using A Cryptic Announcement by toddhhn(op): 12:31pm On Dec 17, 2020
Samsung is preparing some pretty big announcements in 2021, but up to this point, the company has remained completely tight-lipped on everything, despite so much information surfacing through unofficial channels lately.

TM Roh, Samsung's President of Mobile, has posted a cryptic message on the company’s website, and despite the executive not sharing a lot of information about what’s to come in 2021, the text includes lots of hints about what’s to come.

First of all, it looks like Samsung is indeed planning big changes concerning the Galaxy Note lineup.

People familiar with the matter said the Note series could be discontinued rather sooner than later, and one step in this regard is bringing the S Pen to the Galaxy S range. In other words, Samsung wants to add stylus support to the Galaxy S, essentially making the Note more or less redundant, after which the Note as a whole should be ditched.

This is supposed to happen next year, people close to the matter said, as the Galaxy S21 Ultra is likely to come with S Pen support.

Samsung hasn’t commented on this plan until now, with Roh finally dropping some hints in his post.

“We’ve also been paying attention to people’s favorite aspects of the Galaxy Note experience and are excited to add some of its most well-loved features to other devices in our lineup,” Roh said (emphasis is ours).

In other words, the S Pen is coming to the Galaxy S21, and it’s all but confirmed now.

As for when the whole thing is supposed to happen, there’s a good chance the S21 would be unveiled earlier than usual, with the rumor mill speculating January could be the month to witness the debut of the smartphone. This is approximately one month earlier than usual, as Samsung wants to address the slow demand for the Galaxy S20 and bring an iPhone competitor to the market as soon as possible.

And while Samsung has never confirmed the January release date, Roh dropped a hint this is indeed the timing the company has in mind for its next flagship.

“Thank you to everyone who supported us in 2020. I look forward to sharing more in January!” he said (again, the emphasis is ours).

One ambitious project that Samsung has teased today concerns the foldable smartphones, with the South Koreans planning to bring these devices to the market at lower price points. In other words, Samsung is working on a more affordable foldable device, and this one could be announced as soon as the next year, though no other specifics have already been disclosed.

“True to our heritage of staying ahead of the curve with trailblazing mobile tech, we’ll be expanding our portfolio of foldables, so this groundbreaking category is more accessible to everyone. And while we’re already known for our revolutionary cameras, we’ll never stop trying to outdo ourselves — so be on the lookout for super-intelligent, pro-grade camera and video capabilities in 2021,” Roh said.

At this point, the Galaxy S21 is the next Samsung flagship to see daylight, while foldable devices and the Galaxy Note21 (possibly the last Note in history) are expected in the summer.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed all timing details for these smartphones, but it’s pretty clear a big announcement is coming in January anyway. If this is indeed true, then we should expect more information to surface in the next few weeks, with Samsung likely to publish more teasers and details about its first Unpacked event of the year.

PhonesXiaomi Flagship With Snapdragon 875 Passes Through Geekbench by toddhhn(op): 6:11pm On Nov 07, 2020
An unknown Xiaomi device with model designation M2012K11C has appeared on Geekbench. It runs Android 11, has 6GB RAM onboard, and is powered by a Qualcomm chip, which is likely the yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon 875 SoC. More so because the source code of the listing mentions Adreno 660 GPU, which is rumored to be a part of the Snapdragon 875 and isn't available on the current Snapdragon chips.

The M2012K11C - which is said to be the Mi 11 - achieved a score of 1,105 and 3,512 in Geekbench 5's single and multi-core tests, respectively. Since this is possibly a prototype, we'll likely see improved performance of the Snapdragon 875 upon release.

Qualcomm will announce the Snapdragon 875 SoC on December 1. It hasn't revealed any details about the new flagship chipset yet, but thanks to a reliable leakster we know the 5nm chip will have one Cortex-X1 clocked at 2.84GHz, three Cortex-A78 clocked at 2.42GHz, and four power-efficient Cortex A-55 running at 1.8GHz.

TV/MoviesSony Pictures Refuses To Put Big Movies In Theaters Until The Pandemic Is Over by toddhhn(op): 2:40pm On Sep 17, 2020
While Warner Bros. and Disney have tested the waters at the box office with the releases of Tenet and The New Mutants, Sony Pictures will not be following in their footsteps. At least not any time soon. The studio has confirmed that it will not be releasing any major blockbusters in theaters until things return to normal, or at least something much closer to normal. That means movies like Venom 2 could be even further away than previously expected, depending on how things shake out.

The news comes directly from Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman Tony Vinciquerra. He was recently a guest at Bank of America's 2020 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference. During the conference, Vinciquerra addressed the notion of releasing blockbusters in the current marketplace, since theaters have been reopening in the U.S. and throughout much of the world. Here's what he had to say about it.

While theaters are reopening there are quite a few caveats. For one, most theaters are operating at a significantly reduced capacity. In many cases, auditoriums are limited to 25 percent capacity. Plus, as we've seen with both Tenet and The New Mutants, these movies aren't pulling in what they otherwise might have been able to under typical conditions. With that in mind, Sony doesn't see it as worth the risk to release something like Ghostbusters: Afterlife until they are more certain they have a good chance of getting a reasonable return on investment at the box office.

Sony has a big lineup including Morbius, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Peter Rabbit 2 and Monster Hunter on deck. All of these, along with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, were previously set to arrive in 2020. But as theaters shut down, they were al delayed. It seems the release dates currently set are more tentative than anything. Speaking further, Tony Vinciquerra had this to add, suggesting that things will change, in terms of distribution, even once the world returns to normal.
