Politics / SAN: Constitution Allows Buhari To Extend His Tenure To Tackle Insecurity by toliba1(m): 6:09pm On May 10, 2022
Robert Clarke, senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), says the Nigerian constitution allows President Muhammadu Buhari to extend his tenure in order to tackle the country’s security challenges.

Clarke spoke when he featured on Arise Television’s morning show on Monday.

Speaking on the future of Nigeria and if the country is on the right track, Clarke said since 1999, Nigeria has had the worst form of government.

He said with the myriad of security challenges, Nigeria may not have a good election year.

He said if insecurity makes it impossible for the 2023 elections to take place, the constitution provides that the president can extend his tenure by six months, in the first instance, to fix things.

He, however, said with the way things are, he does not think six months is enough to win the war against insecurity.

He said the alternative is for Buhari to continue as president until the country becomes stable.

“I am 84 years old, and I can assure you I’ve had the best time in my life, both in my legal practice, in my social life, in every aspect of life, but I can assure you, that those days are gone by. Since 1999, I have not been a happy man, the way and manner Nigeria has been moved,” Clarke said.

“For instance, look at our first president, Obasanjo with due respect. What was the first negative act he did? ‘I want a third term’. Can you imagine? But he says, ‘oh, it’s not me who wants it, is my friend who is asking me to go for a third term’. That is how we started the 1999 constitution by looking for loopholes to breach the constitution.

“The only consolation is that the constitution provides that the president can stay longer than eight years. I’ve always said it. It is in the constitution.

“If the situation in which we are in now continues, and it is impossible to hold the 2023 election, the constitution says if a situation persists, the president will tell INEC in view of all insurgencies, in view of kidnappings, in view of Boko Haram, I don’t think in these different areas of Nigeria, we can have a good election.

Business / Nigeria Now Borrowing To Fund Petrol Subsidy by toliba1(m): 6:51pm On Oct 31, 2021
Nigeria is spending more on a controversial fuel subsidy projected to hit N3 trillion by the end of 2021 than the sum of $4 billion the country raised through Eurobonds a few weeks ago, according to a new report by Bloomberg.

Oil prices have hit multi-year highs in recent days to over $84 per barrel from the $70 price level they were when Mele Kyari, the group managing director of state oil company, NNPC, put petrol subsidy figure at N150 billion monthly back in June 2021.
By December, it could reach N3 trillion and will be Nigeria’s largest energy intervention bill ever and under a government that claimed at the beginning that there was no subsidy on petrol.

The interventions would surpass the $4 billion the government raised through a Eurobond in September, the Bloomberg report reveals.
Recall in September, Nigeria raised $4 billion through Eurobonds, with investors demanding more than four times the amount on offer after an intensive two days of virtual meetings with investors across the globe.

“The economic case for the removal of Nigeria’s fuel subsidy regime is mounting by the day and the present administration seems undecided on how to proceed,” Joe Nwakwue, former chairman, Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), told BusinessDay.

Analysts have long said the subsidy cost is denying the country value that could have accrued from higher oil prices.
During a panel session at this year’s NES27 event, Shubham Chaudhuri, country director of World Bank for Nigeria, condemned the continued spending by Africa’s biggest economy on petrol subsidy, saying Nigeria could channel the money into upgrading primary healthcare, basic education, and rural roads infrastructure.

“I think the urgency of doing something now is because the time is going in terms of retaining the hope of young Nigerians in the future and potential of Nigeria,” Chaudhuri said.
Between January and August, a total of N905.27 billion had been incurred as subsidy cost, according to presentations to Federation Account and Allocation Committee (FAAC) meetings seen by BusinessDay.
According to the document, Nigeria incurred a subsidy cost of N60.40 billion in February, N111.97 billion in March, N126.30 billion in April, and N114.34 billion in May.

The subsidy cost rose from N143.29 billion in June to N175.32 billion in July, but fell to N149.28 billion in August, according to NNPC’s records.
The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says Nigeria’s 13.2 million out-of-school children are the world’s highest. But the cost of subsidising petrol is 10 times larger than the entire 2021 budget of N94.4 billion meant to pay for free Universal Basic Education.
The implication of this is that Nigeria is spending less money providing basic education than it spends subsidising the cost of petrol, which experts have severally described “as economic waste amid scarce resources.”

Although the recently signed Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) provides for the deregulation of the downstream sector, President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered that petrol subsidy remain in place for the next five to six months to enable the government carry out wide consultations before reaching a final decision on the issue.
On Tuesday, Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget and national planning, said the Federal Government had made provision for petrol subsidy for the first six months of 2022.

“In our 2022 budget, we only factored in subsidy for the first half of the year; the second half of the year, we are looking at complete deregulation of the sector, saving foreign exchange and potentially earning more from the oil and gas industry,” Ahmed said at a session at the 2021 NES27 summit.

Romance / I’ll Name My Baby After My Mother-in-law I Stabbed To Death by toliba1(m): 2:07pm On May 10, 2020
The police in Niger State recently apprehended Fatima Sani, 36, for stabbing her mother-in-law, Aishatu Umaru, 70, to death in the Mashegu Local Government Area of the state following a misunderstanding. Sani, who is pregnant, tells ENYIOHA OPARA her account of what happened
How did the misunderstanding between you and your late mother-in-law start?

The misunderstanding started on the day I got married to her son, Sani Umaru, in March 2009. His mother did not hide her objection to her son’s marriage to me. Although my husband was madly in love with me, his mother swore never to allow the marriage to work. In fact, from the time my husband defied his mother’s threat not to marry me, there was no love lost between me and my mother-in-law.
Every small matter was easily amplified into a major issue, resulting in a quarrel and physical combat in many cases. She mounted pressure on her son to take another wife. She described me as a good-for-nothing woman so that her son would leave me for another woman. She even threatened to curse her son if he failed to end his union with me.

How many children do you have?

I got married to my husband in 2009 and we have three children. I am six months pregnant now. I was living in peace with my husband’s two other wives. I am his last wife and his other wives accepted me and helped me when I came and that helped to move the family forward. All of us were happy as one family. But the greatest problem I had in my marriage was my mother-in-law, who did not want me in that family. My greatest joy was that my fellow wives were giving me support to deal with my mother-in-law’s hatred for me.

Why did you stab her to death?

Since I came into that family, I had not known anything called peace; every day was spoilt by my mother-in-law’s trouble. There was nothing I did that pleased her so I decided to stab her to death so that the problem would be over.
What led to her death started when she accused me of calling my first son a bastard. I was shouting at my first son to go to Islamic school as he was almost late and the teacher would not tolerate that; even my mother-in-law was aware of it. She called my husband on the phone and said I was calling his son a bastard. Out of anger, my husband sent me out of the house without hearing from me and I went to stay in my father’s house for two months. During the period, I did not hear from my husband and I kept thinking about it every now and then.

My mother-in-law had a pathological hatred for me; she swore that my marriage to her son would not work. Even my parents had reported the matter to our village head, telling him to contact my husband to find out from him if he was no longer interested in the marriage so that he could divorce me and I would be able to move on with my life.

On April 23, 2020, around 3pm, something came upon me; I took a knife and went to her room. I saw her sleeping; she was on the bed with my third son, Naziro. I shifted my son away from her and stabbed her to death. It is unfortunate.

What were the reactions of the other wives?

They knew that my mother-in-law never liked me and she instigated her son, Sani, to divorce me. They did not show much reaction because they knew what I had passed through in the name of marriage. In fact, they were sorry for me. For 11 years, I knew no peace in my marriage just because of somebody who did not want my marriage to succeed. It is too bad we have found ourselves in this society; may Allah help us.

Did your husband eventually divorce you?

Despite what happened, my husband has refused to divorce me because he loves me a lot. He even ignored my family’s quest to end the marriage if he was not interested. He feels sorry that I am still in detention despite my condition (being pregnant). I know he is taking his time to sort things out at the appropriate time.

Do you regret stabbing your mother-in-law to death?

Yes, I regret my action; I feel like killing myself. Irrespective of what had happened, I shouldn’t have done that. I know I have done something that even Allah will not forgive me for. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine myself committing such a wicked act. I didn’t believe that I could stab my mother-in-law over our misunderstandings. I pray the family finds it in their hearts to forgive me; it was done because of extreme provocation.
Will you go back to your husband’s house if his family forgives you?
Of course I will because I have my children to look after. After all it has happened; all we have to do now is to find a way to move the family forward and pray to Allah to forgive everybody. It was a mistake; it can happen to anyone that is pushed to the wall like me.

Do you know that you can be sentenced to death?

I know it is a murder case and I know the implications of what I did. The law can take its course. The truth is that my mother-in-law did not want me to have peace in my matrimonial home; Allah should settle everything and may Allah be praised. I am begging the state government to temper justice with mercy and consider my condition. When I deliver my baby, if she is a girl, I will name her after my mother-in-law. I will name her Aishatu; that was my mother-in-law’s name. It will show I’m remorseful.

Religion / Human Skeleton Found In Pastor’s House In Ogun by toliba1(m): 5:21pm On May 09, 2020
Peace Land Estate, Akute, Ogun State was a scene of horror yesterday, as a human skeleton, believed to be that of a woman, was found in a pastor’s house.

According to eyewitnesses, the shocking discovery was made when the owner of the pastor’s house tried to evict him from his flat over late payment of rent.

“The pastor did not pay his rent for a year. The landlady, who was angry with the situation of things, stormed his home with some people in-order to evict him, but were shocked when they discovered a human skeleton inside,” one of the sources revealed.

People in the neighbourhood were attracted to the scene while the matter was quickly reported to the police.

However the suspect, who owns a church, was said to have made some revelations about the skeleton. He alleged that it belonged to his sister. According to him, his parents had just three children – himself and two sisters. He said he lived with them in the flat.

However, for sometime now, one of the sisters named Funmi has not been seen again.

When people asked about her, “he would say she went to the mountain,” said the source.

She, however, allegedly died since 2010 and her body was abandoned in the house.

From the position of the skeleton, it appeared the deceased was kneeling on the ground.

The Police have since arrested the suspect.
In recent times many suspects have been arrested with skulls and other human parts in different parts of Ogun State including Abeokuta and Sango Ota.

Romance / Angry Wife Poisons Husband ,chops Off His Manhood For Dating Her Best Friend by toliba1(m): 5:09pm On May 09, 2020
A 33-year-old wife in Nasarawa state has poisoned her husband of eight years to death in Nassarawa after she found out he cheated on her with her best friend.
The angry wife identified as Janet Ekpe who had two children for her husband, Sunday Ekpe, allegedly killed her husband after she found out he was having an affair with her best friend, Hellen, who is a widow in Zumbagwe community in Karu local government area of the state.

An eight-year-old marriage has ended on a tragic note in Zumbagwe, a remote community in Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. Thirty-three-year-old Janet Ekpe poisoned her husband for allegedly dating her best friend and watched him die slowly and painfully.

Besides allegedly dating her best friend, Janet also accused her husband, Sunday Ekpe, of starving her of sex while satisfying her friend with same. Janet recalled that she had got used to having marathon sex with Ekpe since they got married only for him to slow down after her second child and later withdrew completely.

She said she grew tired of her husband giving excuses night after night as to why he was no longer able to deliver in bed and even telling her on occasions to fantasize about the good old times in order to satisfy her sexual urge.

According to The Nation, Janet and Sunday seemed to be living a happy life until she noticed that his sexual desire for her started to decline after they welcomed their second child.

In her confessional statement, Janet said

We were married for eight years with two children. It was three years ago I discovered that my husband had fallen in love with my best friend, a widow, and had been dating her. Since then, he stopped sleeping with me; he began to starve me sexually while satisfying my best friend.

When we got married eight years ago, sex seemed to be the only thing on my husband’s mind. He was always in the mood. We would make love three or four times before morning, and when he woke up, he would be ready to continue. There were days he skipped work and we would spend the whole day making love.

We had sex in the bathroom, in the kitchen, and anywhere it caught our fancy in the house. I became used to constant sex through him and also became the envy of my close friends, including my best friend who he later fell in love with.

Whenever we shared stories of our exploits in bed, my friends felt I had the best man and jokingly begged me to allow them to have my husband just for a day because their husbands could not satisfy them in bed. But shortly after we had our two kids, I began to notice his disinterest in sex with me and his performance level began to drop.

While we were having sex on a regular basis before, it came down to two times in a week and later became so bad that we could stay for three or four months without making love. Initially, I was not bothered because I felt that he would come around it after the babies were weaned. But I was wrong. He began to starve me of sex for months on end. It got to the point that I would be begging him to sleep with me but he would rebuff my requests.

At times, he would tell me I should relive the moments we had sex every day and wallow in that fantasy. When I pestered him further, he told me he was no more interested in sex as he had had enough to last him a lifetime. He even told me that sex is not food and that if I felt so sex-starved, I should get a man to satisfy me.

I reported the matter to our church and the pastor summoned him, but he could not convince our pastor. I reported the matter to his parents in the village and some of his relations around, but he ignored their invitation. Within this period, my husband started keeping late night, which was very unusual of him.

Unknown to me, my best friend, Hellen, who is a widow, started keeping distance with me, while some of my friends started hinting that she and my husband were dating. I watched the way they acted and how happy he always seemed in her presence. I monitored them closely and caught them five times in a drinking joint in new Nyanyan. When I confronted him about it, he said I was being silly; so I decided to believe the whole story. The worst was the day I saw a text message from Helen in my husband’s phone, thanking him for giving her the best sexual satisfaction ever in her life the previous day. I was devastated. I felt sick and angry. I was hurt that my own husband could do this to me. I went back to our pastor but my husband turned down the pastor’s invitation and even stopped attending church.

At this point, he stopped coming back home most times and resorted to sleeping in hotels with Hellen. I felt like a single mum and it upset me. I confronted Helen and told her she was hurting me and that their relationship was getting stronger while they were not taking my feelings into consideration. I could not stand the thought of them being so close.

I used to love and trust my husband but he turned me into something I never knew I could become: a murderer. I killed him. I poisoned him and watched him die in our bedroom, painfully. I mixed a deadly, colorless, tasteless, and odorless substance in his meal and drinking water which destroyed his intestines immediately. He cried and struggled uncontrollably after taking the meal. He gave up after an hour and I used a sharp blade and knife to chop off his penis, place it on his chest as evidence of what killed him.

If your penis is the one that is giving you the audacity to have feelings for my best friend and refusing to listen to the advice of your parents and even your pastor, it is better to cut it off. Mr Sunday (Ekpe), a cheating, filthy, lying bastard, ought to die for me to live. I deserve to live because I am human and have blood flowing in my veins. These foolish men, you give them everything, yet they choose to fool around and play with your intelligence. I had monitored him closely and tolerated him for long and his end has come.”

An uncle of the deceased, Adakole Onoja, who was also interviewed, said he called the late Sunday several times, warning him not to sexually starve his wife.

“When his wife reported the matter to me, I invited him to my house and told him the implications of his actions. You cannot completely starve your young wife of sex and resort to dating her best friend. Many people, including his parents in the village, his pastor, and his close friends, interfered in the issue but he turned a deaf ear to them.

Maybe that was how he was destined to end his life. His wife’s action may not be right, but she is a human being too.” Onoja said

Are your children ready to inherit you?

The only son of a certain wealthy man wanted to inherit the father's business.

The old man gave him one condition to fulfill: "Earn 10,000 dollars, show me the money and my multi-million dollar business is yours"

Not long after, his son brought the money he had collected from his mother claiming he worked for it. His father who was relaxing by an oven collected the cash and threw it into the oven. The two watched the oven until the whole cash was burnt to ashes.
He told his son to simply go on and work for the money and bring it to him. The mother again gave him another $10, 000 and told the boy to wait for some time, so he could disguise and look worn out before seeing his father.

When he eventually met his father with the money, the old man was at the same spot close to the oven. The man took the cash again threw it into the oven, and again the two watched the $10,000 burnt to ashes. Then he told his son to go, work and save $10,000 and show him and the inheritance will all be his.
The boy was furious knowing that his father was determined and stringent with the condition of working and saving up $10,000 before he can access his inheritance.

The boy again met with his mother for advice. She was thinking of another option they can use to outsmart the old man, when he finally told his mother not to worry and that he will go out and work and save the money for his father.

The boy travelled to another town where he would be given an opportunity to do odd jobs because in their locality nobody would believe him, the only son of a wealthy man doing menial job?

He spent years denying himself of food, pleasure, good accommodation, designer-wears and every good life accustomed to rich men's' children just to save up the money for his father.

When he eventually came back his mother hardly recognised her son, he looked old, thin and wretched.

With that desperate condition he quickly went to present the money to his father who incidentally was seating in the very place close to the dollar-burning oven. He gave his father the money he has saved with pains and hunger. The old man took the money and again threw it into the oven. The boy dived headlong into the fire and brought the money back and exclaimed, "father you can't burn my sweat." The father replied, "you absolutely worked for this very one son, nobody will stand looking, seeing his effort being burnt, as you have done in the previous ones your mother helped you."
The old man feeling satisfied with his son's last action, willed all his wealth to him.

Moral Lesson
1.People put value on things that cost them most.

2. Wealth gotten through easy way will soon end up in the oven.

3.Before handing over your business to your child, first hand over wisdom to him.

4. Like most of us with wonderful backgrounds, we often deny our children valuable experiences they need to succeed in life by too much pampering, saying "I don't want them to experience what I experienced" forgetting that such conditions added up in making you what you are. Sometimes, create artificial scarcity to help harden your children up for tomorrow.

5.Don't forget to share your story with your family as your children will need it someday to solve life's challenges

6. Wisdom and good name is the best inheritance you can give to your children.

7. The billion dollar wealth handed over to your children without character and morals will end up in the hands of your servants and maids that possess them.

8. Success is not taught in schools but through hard work, dedication, courage, focus, determination, resilience, diligence, honesty, perseverance, character, etc.

You'll definitely succeed.

Formerly a Governor in Anambra, he was in the national assembly then federal Minister under the "CHANGE" government now returned as a Minister for another term under the "Next Level" government.

Ogbonaya Onu
Formerly a Governor, he was a Minister for Science and Technology under the "CHANGE" government now returned as a Minister under the "Next Level" government

Lai Muhammad
Formerly a commissioner in Lagos, another "Yes Sir" man to the power that be, a Minister under the "CHANGE" government now returned as a Minister under the "Next Level" government.

Adeniyi Adebayo
Formerly a Governor in Ekiti state, now a Minister under the "Next Level" government.

Festus Keyamo
Formerly a Human Rights Activist Lawyer, he was a Lawyer to EFCC tormenting looters of our national treasury but was baited to come and eat and expectedly kept quiet once he was invited to the "dining table", Keyamo exhibits good table manner because he stopped talking once he started eating. Keyamo will now sit on the same table with the looters he once tormented to make decisions for the country

........And the list continues, in all 8 retired but not tired Governors, several former legislatures.

Meanwhile, Mr Bayo Ogunlesi is a Nigerian managing the Heathrow Airport and some other Airports in the UK, he also manages the railway in some European countries but never invited home to come and serve as Transport Minister just because he's not loyal to the Bourdillon.

Recently, the news of a Nigerian medical Doctor, a graduate of OAU Ile-Ife that performed an unprecedented feat in the medical profession went viral internationally, he never made the Ministerial list because he would neither say "Yes sir" to the northern cabals nor the Bourdillon.

Kase Lawal is an Ibadan man from Elekuro, he's a world class oil magnate based in Texas, USA. He rubs shoulders with the powers that be in America, he's acclaimed to be the richest black man in Texas his goodwill and social capital would have assisted our oil and gas sector. Alas, he won't say "Yes Sir" to the constituted Authority hence he's not on the Ministerial list.

Year in year out, young Nigerians record academic feats internationally but never has any of these young graduates bubbling with fresh ideas been invited to come and serve their fatherland rather people are recycled and compensated for loyalty to their Ogas at the top.

A critical scrutiny of the list of ministerial nominees shows that none of the forty-three prospective Ministers is below 50 years of age. The only jobs reserved for Nigerian youths are: Social media ranting, Npower, SureP, O'Yes,j Yesso, BetNaija and yahooyahoo.

With this trend, the labour of our Hero past is already in vain.

Politics / You’re An Election Rigger Without Peer, Tinubu Blasts Obasanjo by toliba1(m): 8:04am On Jan 23, 2019
NATIONAL Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, yesterday, took a swipe at the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo accusing him of being responsible for the flaws in Nigeria’s political economy since 1999.

All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo Obasanjo, in his state of the nation address, tagged Points for Concern and Action, had expressed concern over the impartiality and competence of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a credible election. Reacting to the former President’s criticisms, Tinubu described Obasanjo as an “election rigger without peer.” In a letter titled Chief Obasanjo – At war against his own deeds, Tinubu said the former president is shameless and has a wicked sense of humour. The statement reads: “Former President Obasanjo is many things to many people; but he is all things unto himself. His recent contribution to our political discourse wherein he alleges plots to steer the coming elections shows the benefits from an exceedingly faulty memory, is purely shameless or has a most wicked sense of humor. Perhaps all three are facets of his makeup and were equally on display in his latest prosaic display.” the letter read in part.

The crux of his long tirade was the allegation that INEC is poised to cook the election results. Chief Obasanjo should not get his dander up and waste good ink for nothing. This election will be a free and open exercise of the people’s right to choose their leaders. Obasanjo makes fiery allegations against this right but offers no corroborating evidence; he presents only reams of words. This is because Obasanjo is projecting onto the APC the misconduct he would wrought if still in power. Yet, the ways of Obasanjo are not those of the APC. And this difference has meant the better for Nigeria.

“Moreover, Chief Obasanjo should be the last to complain about election rigging. His administration was an unalloyed miscarriage of justice and of the best aspirations of the Nigerian people. We all know he was not elected in 1999. He was handed Nigeria on a silver platter; perhaps because Nigeria was so easily given that he went about treating the nation as if it was a less than precious thing; he thought it was a cheap give-away not a privilege to govern this nation.

“This man should have positioned himself to be the father of the nation. All the goodwill that could be granted a political figure was bestowed on him. The global economy was such that it fueled our growth. Everyone wanted Nigeria to succeed after emerging from years of noxious military rule. Despite the flawed exercise that rendered him president, we all bit our tongues in hope that he would say and do the right things that would move Nigeria forward. “Instead of being a unifying figure as Commander-in-chief, he lowered himself to being a divisive, vindictive conniver. There was no table which he neared that he did not upset and overturn. There was no one who came into his company for any period of time with whom he did not fall out if he expresses a thought contrary to one of his.

“Given the vast margin between the good he could have achieved and the nebulous feats that comprise his true record, Chief Obasanjo is the person most responsible for the flaws in the Nigerian political economy since 1999. His ego is as expansive as the firmament but his good deeds would fit into a modest sachet with ample room to spare. “The worst of Obasanjo’s record, I have yet to describe. When it comes to elections, he has been a rigger without peer. There is no election which occurred under Obasanjo’s watch or in which he participated that did not involve cheating on his part. Even the late President Umaru Musa Yar ‘Adua admitted he was the beneficiary of a flawed election engineered by none other than today’s vociferous complainant. For Obasanjo to lament over electoral malpractice is tantamount to the ocean complaining that a few raindrops are causing it to get wet.”

“The status of an ex-president is one of quiet dignity, respect, discretion, decorum, discipline and restraint. Obasanjo does not have a single one of these qualities. We have had a number of former Heads of State, namely, Gowon, Shagari, Babangida, Abubakar Salami and Jonathan. All of these former Heads of State have exercised discretion, restraint and self-discipline in relation to their successors, but not Obasanjo. “Obasanjo’s boisterous, aggressive and hectoring attitude towards succeeding Presidents, strikes me as a case of one who has never recovered from the loss of power. By his meddlesomeness, rude and uncouth attitude towards later Heads of State, it is clear that he is addicted to a substance called power, and is angry and resentful towards any other person exercising it.” The legal luminary, however, accused Obasanjo of acting like a dictator while in office by illegally removing state governors, declaration of illegal states of emergency, reckless abuse of power and carrying out alleged genocidal slaughter. Sagay said: “As I stated earlier, Obasanjo believes that he can break all rules and ethics but it is a crime for others to even appear to follow his footsteps in that regard. “He is a man who is not conscious of a sense of wrong doing and is probably unaware of the long list of depredations trailing his footsteps. The man is not just immoral, he is worse; he is amoral, i.e., he lacks a sense of right or wrong. “Obasanjo is now an old man. It is now imperative that he learns to exercise some discretion and restraint in his public statements. His bombastic, false, misleading and destructive outbursts are not befitting of a so-called Elder State man; even more less of a former president. Obasanjo, let Nigeria be, go to Owu and rest.” Yoruba patriots tackle Obasanjo Also, speaking through the National Coordinator, Yoruba Patriots’ Movement, Chief Oladosu Ladipo, the elders opined that the unsubstantiated allegations against the president have “reduced Obasanjo’s value both politically and intellectually.”

Oladipo said: “Two things I see, making a U-turn or somersaulting in the broad daylight has reduced his value both politically and intellectually. It has reduced his integrity; reduced all his virtues and has put him as somebody whose words cannot be relied upon and who cannot mentor the up and coming generations. In fact, he is double-mouthed”. “Two, the history of 1999-2007 is still with some of us; the facts between Obasanjo and Atiku. I mean facts that cannot be debunked. So, I want to leave that aside for now. The other one is that democracy involves propaganda and propaganda involves truth, half-truth, total falsehood and blatant lies. I can describe the things he is saying as total falsehood, mere propaganda. Can a good Statesman make propaganda? Shagari died at the age of 93, did you hear him say anything like this? What he is doing is propaganda for post-election riot, which can be an inducement for the military to take over, and military cannot take over in Nigeria again.”

Your comment reckless, improper, PDP tells Tinubu Reacting to Tinubu’s chastisement of Obasanjo, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, described it as disrespectful, reckless, unguarded and indecorous. In a statement by Director, Media & Publicity, PDP Presidential Campaign Organization, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan said:

“Tinubu in his tirade against the former President sounded like a disrobed ruler facing a pang of defeat as he watches his empire being legitimately taken. “It is shocking that Asiwaju of Lagos can be in cahoots with President Muhammadu Buhari, a known anti-democrat, who has always been in league with all known dictators, while at the same time claiming to be on the side of democrats. It is, however, not a surprise that Tinubu is in severe pain because President Obasanjo exposed their rigging plans.

Asiwaju had always won elections for himself and his cronies through rigging and these accounts for his bitterness. “His reliance on rigging was typified in the Osun election where results were manipulated in order not to “disgrace” the fading politics of the Asiwaju of Lagos. “Let it be placed on record that the story of that election has not been fully told by Tinubu in his snide remarks against President Obasanjo. He chose to be silent on that phone call which was clandestinely put across to Abuja, consequent upon which INEC declared an election already won by the PDP, as inconclusive. Since the matter is in court, we will not join Tinubu in abusing court processes. “However, PDP states in unequivocal terms that President Obasanjo, contrary to Tinubu’s claims, did not at any time, assure our party that he holds sway throughout the southwest and as such will deliver Osun state to the PDP.

“It is also important to state that the people’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, did not also claim to have rigged election in the South West. However, if Tinubu today denies his affinity with Atiku Abubakar, which is well known in the entire nation, then he can deny even his own existence.” “It is ridiculous that Tinubu can attempt to justify the sharing of N10,000 each to traders, in the market by Vice President Yemi Osibanjo. The PDP believes that Asiwaju of Lagos has not read and like President Buhari is also unaware that the same poor people which Osinbajo claimed to be helping with his ‘tradermoni’ voodoo, chased him out of the UTC market in Abuja. “It is imperative to ask Tinubu if he saw the cartoon making the round, where poor people were depicted thronging around him with paltry N10,000 naira in their hands while he sat on his throne with full chicken in his hands and telling the famished lot that he has nothing to offer them.”

“Nigerians already know that their help is not in the hands of people like Asiwaju of Lagos and President Buhari, who are amassing wealth for themselves and their generations yet unborn, while the people live in squalor. Since Asiwaju of Lagos understands the reason for collation of PVC numbers in exchange for the N10,000 trader money, he will do the nation good, especially at this time, if he provides explanation for this joint venture outside rigging of elections. “It is shameful that Tinubu can compare any administration in the history of our nation to the Buhari administration. Nigerians have never been this hungry, our purchasing power has never been this low, our fault lines have never been this manifest and our nation has never been turned into a huge funeral parlor as we have witnessed under President Buhari’s incompetent, divisive and colossally corrupt administration. At no time in our history had Nigerians gone to the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos to take a plunge of death.

“It is therefore strange that Asiwaju of Lagos can have the temerity to accuse anybody of leaving the poor unattended to, when he has been a pretender in the circle of the poor. “It is unfortunate that Asiwaju of Lagos has forgotten how in 2014/2015, he assembled his team for the election of President Buhari, how he put in everything for Buhari to get elected, and how, as soon as Buhari assumed office, he ostracized him, chastised him before the people he brought and reduced him to one state leader, in spite of his pretentions as the National leader of the APC. “Nigerians have not forgotten how President Buhari rose in a public function and said Tinubu cannot call himself a saint PDP lambasts APC over attack on Obasanjo Meanwhile the PDP has berated APC over what the party called “needless attack” on ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo over his comment on the last Osun governorship election. The PDP, in a statement by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Prince Diran Odeyemi, said Obasanjo did not say anything new about Osun governorship election, adding that all that transpired, especially during the September 27 Rerun Election was already in public domain. The statement reads:

“The statement by APC and an aide to Ogbeni Aregbesola, in reaction to what our respected former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo said on the last Osun governorship election should not have ordinarily attracted such an outburst from those that stole the collective mandate of Osun people during the last election. “The world knows APC colluded with INEC to rig the last Osun poll. Reports by election observers exposed all their atrocities. Why the attack on the elder statement that observed Nigeria was heading towards a precipice under the Buhari and cried out? “We advise APC, President Buhari and INEC to see the warning signs and back down on their plans to rig the general elections as done during Osun governorship poll. We also call for end of attacks on Chief Obasanjo, who has remained the conscience of our nation by the enemies of democracy.”

Politics / CBN Cautions FG On External Borrowing As The Nation’s External Debt Rose By 109% by toliba1(m): 6:47am On Jan 23, 2019
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday cautioned the federal government on the sharp increase in the size of the nation’s external debt which rose by 109 percent to $21.6 billion as at September 30th 2018, from $11.28 billion on June 30th, 2015.

Mr Godwin Emefiele answering questions during his screening by the Senate for Central Bank Governorship in Abuja on Wednesday Meanwhile, the committee retained the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 14 percent. It also retained the Liquidity Ratio and Cash Reserve Ratio at 30 percent and 22.5 percent respectively. CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, disclosed this while briefing the press on the outcome of yesterday’s meeting of the MPC in Abuja. He said, “On external borrowings, committee noted the increase in the debt level advising for caution, noting that it could fast be approaching the pre-2005 Paris Club exit level.

Speaking further on the committee’s position, the Emefiele said the committee was not in any way neither condemning nor saying external borrowing was wrong but that adequate care must be taken to avoid a debt trap. Nigeria sealed a $18 billion debt relief deal with the Paris Club on October 20, 2005 after tortuous negotiations lasting two days and two nights in Paris to conclude many months of debt relief campaigns and negotiations/ The then Minister of Finance Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who led the Nigerian delegation signed on behalf of the federal government while the Chairman of the Paris Club, Mr. Xavier Muscat of France led representatives of the fifteen-member club to sign on behalf of their respective countries. ALSO READ: Nigeria’s 2019 budget still under threat as oil price hovers at $52.72 Under the agreement, Nigeria was to pay the balance of $12. 4 billion, of the over $30 billion debt stock, in three tranches commencing at the end of that October and to be concluded in March 2006 to enable the country exit the club completely. In the first tranche, Nigeria cleared arrears by paying about $6.4. billion. The second tranche was the payment of about $1.3 billion, while the last tranche was payment of the balance of about $4.4 billion. Zainab Ahmed Projects 2.28% GDP growth for 2019 The MPC however in its outlook for the economy differed from the IMF forecast of 2.0 percent economic growth in 2019, saying it expects the economy to grow at 2.28 percent this year.

The CBN Governor said: “The outlook for growth, however, remains fragile as the late implementation of the 2018 budget and the residual impact of flooding and security challenges, constitute headwinds to growth. “The economy is projected to grow by 2.0 per cent by the IMF, 2.2 per cent by the World Bank and 2.28 per cent by the CBN. Key headwinds to these forecasts, however, are softening oil prices, persistent security challenges arising from insurgency in the North East and herdsmen attack in some parts of the country and perceived political risks associated with the 2019 general election. ALSO READ: Cost of funds to fall as N1.36tr inflow boosts interbank liquidity On inflation, he said: “The Committee observed that the near-term risks to inflation remain: the residual impact of flooding on agricultural output, insecurity in parts of the food producing belts of the country, exchange rate pass-through to inflation due to weakening oil price and campaign-related spending towards the 2019 general elections. Accordingly, the MPC urged the Federal Government to sustain its current effort towards improving security to ease the food supply chain bottlenecks.” Reasons for retaining policy rates Explaining the decision of the MPC to retain the MPR, liquidity ration and the Cash Reserve Ratio at current levels, the CBN Governor said: “In the light of the observed risk confronting the economy, including the global and domestic inflationary pressures, which have intensified the risk of currency depreciation, the MPC was of the view that a loosening option was very remote.

“Weighing the balance of its judgement on price stability conducive to growth, the MPC felt that tightening would result in the loss of the gains so far achieved, noting that this may drive the banks to reprice their assets; thus increasing the cost of credit as well as elevating credit risk in the economy. It will also worsen the position of non-performing loans of the banks. “The Committee also felt that tightening would dampen investments and hamper improvements in output growth, given the already fragilegrowth performance so far achieved. In the light of the above, the MPC decided by a vote of all eleven (11) members to keep the policy parameters unchanged from their current levels.” Establishment of National Microfinance Bank Defending the decision to establish a national microfinance bank, Emefiele said the step had become compelling given the fact that over N90 billion was sitting in the CBN waiting to be distributed to small business operators and farmers. Floating the bank, he said, became necessary because it would open branches in all local governments, to close the gap left by lack of bank branches, especially in the rural areas, making it difficult for people in those places to benefit from policies aimed at funding MSMEs and small farms. Analysts commend decision to retain MPR Meanwhile, analysts have described the decision of the MPC to retain the MPR and other policy rates at current levels as ‘prudent’. Commenting, analysts at Lagos based Vetiva Capital Management Limited, said: “We consider this early decision by the MPC to be prudent given that pricing pressure appears slightly under control, even as near-term fiscal activity supporting growth remain thin, as policymakers focus on the upcoming political vote.

“Nonetheless, we maintain our view of a policy rate hike at a later meeting this year given expected pressure on both inflation and the exchange rate. While the apex bank has been able to maintain exchange rate stability so far, the prospect of rising rates from the U.S. Federal Reserve as well as monetary tightening from the ECB could spark a more hawkish bias later in the year.” Analysts at FSDH Merchant Bank also said: “The MPC’s decision is in line with the view of FSDH Research released in our report entitled “Keeping Policy Rates at Current Levels is Still Prudent”. On the implication of the MPC decision, they said:

“In order to address the ensuing risks to possible increase in inflation rate in Nigeria and the weak exchange rate, FSDH Research believes the CBN will continue to use the sales of Government securities to influence interest rates and yields. Therefore we expect the yields on fixed income securities to increase marginally from the current levels in coming weeks
