Literature“You Can’t Stop Me From Talking About Gays. Keep Your Love”– Chimamanda Adichie by TolstoyFan(op): 3:10pm On Mar 08, 2017
“You can’t stop me from talking about gays. Keep your love”– Chimamanda Adichie to Nigerian man

International award-winning novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was in Lagos during the summer of 2016 where she taught a writing workshop as part of an annual event that sees her shuttling between Nigeria and the US. The writing workshop ended in a question-and-answer session, during which a young man asked Adichie a question. She told The Guardian of UK in a recent interview that she recalled the young man saying, “I used to love you. I’ve read all your books. But since you started this whole feminism thing, and since you started to talk about this gay thing, I’m just not sure about you any more. How do you intend to keep the love of people like me?” Adichie said her friends were furious at the young man’s question, but she rather liked his bravery and honesty in asking. She replied him saying, “Keep your love. Because, sadly, while I love to be loved, I will not accept your love if it comes with these conditions.”

PoliticsHow Goodluck Jonathan Was Almost Stranded Abroad Recently - Dawntodusknews.com by TolstoyFan(op): 11:20am On Oct 09, 2016
The Federal Government on Friday debunked the claims by some protesters in Bayelsa state that the allowances due to the former President Goodluck Jonathan were stopped and his accounts frozen. The Senior Special Assistant on Media, Garba Shehu, on this issue stated that, “We have confirmed with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) that the former President and the other past leaders were paid their allowances up to the second quarter.

The story of account closure is false - Federal Government
"The past leaders have not been paid third quarter allowances but will get their dues when remittances are received by the SGF from the Ministry of Finance. Also, the story of account closure is false. It is not known to the investigation agencies. The National Security Adviser to the President is not aware of this bank account closure. The DG SSS is unaware of it, the EFCC is unaware and the IG of Police is not in the know.”

FG froze Jonathan's account dedicated for medicals abroad. Help came from friends - Source
Meanwhile sources close to Goodluck Jonathan claim that his accounts were indeed frozen. A source said, "Jonathan was abroad receiving treatment when his account was frozen. Before he travelled he informed the President he was going for treatment. The former President was stranded abroad and would have been a casualty but for the timely intervention of others." Another source added that, "They froze Jonathan's account dedicated for medicals abroad. He reached for his money to pay his medical bills while abroad and found it frozen. Help came from friends."

EducationHarvard Professor Jacob Olupona: "Religious Illiteracy Is Killing Nigeria" by TolstoyFan(op): 7:59am On Oct 08, 2016
Professor Jacob Olupona, an indigene of Ute in Ondo State, is a world-renowned international researcher in the field of Comparative Religions. In 2006, he joined the faculty of Harvard University as Professor of African and African American Studies, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and as Professor of African Religious Traditions, Harvard Divinity School. He spoke to Dawn-To-Dusk News' Chief Editor KIKELOMO IWAJOMO on his background, his experiences, religion, Nigeria, and Nigerians in Diaspora.

How do you think the government can utilize Nigerians in the diaspora?

We have to make it very clear that the Diaspora has something to contribute to the development of Nigeria. This is what China and India did. I`ve been to China several times and one of the things that interests me in China especially is that they are building institutions, research centers and they are bringing people from the Diaspora to come and help them. The same applies to India and other Asian countries. Some of these scholars are still working in American universities. The world has changed and Nigerians need to know that.

The world has become a global village and Nigeria will need the help and support of her diaspora. The case of Nigeria is unfortunate and pathetic because there are so many of these young ones in the Diaspora who are making waves in academic and professional fields. All you have to do is come to Harvard here and see them. The very bright undergraduates who are leading the world are very passionate about Nigeria, but what they don’t have and what they don’t know is how they can get involved in the development of Nigeria. They want to get involved. Nigeria does not respond to this and does not have a plan that will enable them bring all these resources and all the knowledge into helping the country.

Nigeria's wealthy see the acquisition of money as a form of oppressing others
I have been to many countries, not just for conferences alone but also where I spend my sabbatical leaves, and what I always think about is… what can I do to improve things at home in Nigeria? What can my people learn from this place that I am in: China, Israel, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, etc.? The problem is that our people, especially the elites, they don`t know what to do with their wealth and influence. They don`t know how to be relevant to their society and their culture. The wealthy see the acquisition of money as a form of oppressing others particularly those who don`t have it and they maintain a degree of ignorance and illiteracy.

It is one thing to be schooled and to acquire certificates, it`s another thing to be educated and literate. This is what I am talking about. Also, Nigeria’s structure that concentrates power and authority in the center constrains growth and development. The regions, states, and local government councils cannot grow efficiently with these kinds of top-down control from the seat of power at the centre. That is not the meaning of federalism that the founding fathers of this nation intended for Nigeria. It is also not what makes America great as the model of our pluralism and federalism.

As the son of a priest now a professor of comparative religion, how has your personal religion evolved over the years?

I`m a Christian and I go to church regularly. I’m an Anglican through and through. We have two Anglican churches here in Boston. One is here on campus. The other is in Roxbury district. The whole thing started from my house, in my sitting room as a fellowship: just meeting, talking and having Bible studies and so on. The Nigerian churches are growing in America and all over the world.

I am very religious and I am not the kind of professor who will be deceiving you that I don`t believe in the power of prophets, of the priests, or recognize the potency of the power of indigenous traditions.
Back to your question, what you`re trying to say is that the practice of religion doesn`t mean that you should begin to see others as outsiders. Because of course, my field is comparative of religion, I have studied Islam, Christianity and African religion and so I know what is going on in all these traditions. I know what they are professing. I have no problem with that. I am very religious and I am not the kind of professor who will be deceiving you that I don`t believe in the power of prophets, of the priests, or recognize the potency of the power of indigenous traditions.

Religion has today become a big issue in Nigeria. Would you say religion is now an identity for Nigerians?

Religion should never define our national identity. Take for instance there is no Yoruba Christian family that does not have Muslims, and vice versa. Look at the South-West Nigerian governors, the majority of them are Muslims. In the past nobody complained about any religious outsiders governing them. But now, you hear complaints about the religious identity of the governors. Why? Because we are pursuing unnecessary problems in the name of religion when we know very well that these issues do not bring about any good thing. There is a lot of ignorance and religious illiteracy is killing Nigeria. Don`t bring your problem as if you have an answer and religion is going to solve all of your problems. Where things are in Nigeria as we speak, religion can’t solve the nation’s problems. We need to act as citizens and demand that our leaders are honest, just, and hardworking. Our people too should be disciplined, ethical, and socially engaged in matters of governance and social welfare.

Politics'No Personal Grudge Between Buhari&Dasuki,They Are Linked By Marriage'-Biography by TolstoyFan(op): 12:52am On Oct 07, 2016
The authorized biography of President Buhari - “Muhammadu Buhari – The challenges of Leadership in Nigeria” - written by Prof. John Paden has brought to fore why former National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki(retd.) is still in detention for a while. In Chapter 15 of the book which focuses on ‘Military Procurement Accountability’, Paden stated that: “For Buhari who has said openly that he wants to be remembered for fighting corruption, it will be an unmitigated disaster for his legacy if such a gargantuan fleecing went on in his primary constituency, the military, and he failed to unearth it and punish the culprits.

Who really was Sambo Dasuki fronting for in Jonathan’s cabinet? That is the main question to which Buhari is also seeking answers
Buhari knows that Task Force and Division Commanders knew of and approved these arms purchases; Service Chiefs knew too; Ministers of Defence and Finance knew; Chief of Staff knew; civil servants in the Ministries of Defence and Finance knew, Chief of Staff to the President knew; the Vice President knew; and the President knew. It is why Buhari will keep his foot on Dasuki’s throat until he fesses up.

“Who really was Sambo Dasuki fronting for in Jonathan’s cabinet? That is the main question to which Buhari is also seeking answers. As noted throughout this study, Buhari has a strong belief in right and wrong. He also has an abiding respect for the Nigerian military as an institution that can help hold Nigeria together. From Buhari’s perspective, if corruption in military procurement undermines the integrity of the military, that corruption must be confronted. And if such procurement allegations weaken the military response to Boko Haram and put ordinary foot soldiers at risk, that corruption poses a double threat, endangering even the Nigeria Project itself.

Dasuki is twelve years younger than Buhari
“It is beyond the scope of this study to assess all the back stories of the relationship between Buhari and Dasuki. Suffice it to say that the so-called grudge between the two has never really existed. Dasuki is twelve years younger than Buhari, even though Dasuki did participate in the 1985 countercoup. The family of Ibrahim Dasuki and the Buhari extended family have been linked by marriage for more than four decades.

Buhari had professed that although ‘the past is prologue’, he had no time to pursue alleged ‘enemies.
"In addition, in his inaugural address, Buhari had professed that although ‘the past is prologue’, he had no time to pursue alleged ‘enemies.” Other personal relationships in play included Buhari’s relationship with Jonathan’s Minister of Defence, General Aliyu Gusau and Buhari’s relationship with General Babangida, who has played such a ubiquitous role in Fourth Republic politics. Yet the real story probably has little to do with personal or political relationships.”

PoliticsIyabo Obasanjo: “My Father Is The Best President Nigeria Has Ever Had” by TolstoyFan(op): 7:41am On Oct 01, 2016
By KIKELOMO IWAJOMO

Dr. Iyabo Obasanjo is the first child of former president of Nigeria, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR. At 49, there is no gainsaying that she is one of Africa's most successful women. She had her first degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan; master's in Preventive Veterinary Medicine at the University of California; and PhD in Epidemiology at Cornell University. Today, Iyabo Obasanjo is a professor, epidemiologist, global health expert, veterinary physician, policy analyst, researcher, former senator. Currently lecturing Global Health at the Virginia Military Institute in the United States of America (USA), the renowned scientist took a rare break from her busy schedule to grant this exclusive interview with Dawn-To-Dusk News’ Chief Editor, KIKELOMO IWAJOMO, on her success story, her parents’ influence, and governance in Nigeria. Excerpts:

You are a professor, epidemiologist, global health expert, veterinary physician, policy analyst, researcher, former senator. With your many achievements, my question for you is this, what did you do differently that has made you stay successful?

First, you need to get the best education that your intellect and ability can afford you, and then you lay the foundation for continued success. You can always go back to your education and let it feed you. Your motivation in life will be very different from people that don't have alternatives. You have alternatives and the way you live your life then shows that. So wherever you are, you might not be able to get the best education that is available to the world because of limited resources, but get the best education that you can get based on everything you have. For you to do that, always work hard in whatever you do. Challenges will come along the way but always take the lessons, and do the next thing. That`s why you have to prepare yourself early so that whatever comes, life may take you on but you can always push yourself up, then move to another level because that to me is life: you can always find a different direction to go. I have been very lucky in my life that when I want to change directions, I am able to do that.

Serving as a politician, your careers as a scientist, and analyst, which is(was) the most challenging?

I think for me the most challenging was the period of eight years I was in Nigeria in government. I think you can write a book on governors in Nigeria. I had campaigned with this governor and later realized that it was not what I signed up for. But I liked the job. I liked meeting the people, interacting with them and helping them. I did not enjoy managing the governor. That was a disappointment.
Then I interacted with some people at the national level, and thought serving as a senator would help with solving the country’s problems, but what I saw at the senate was worse. As a commissioner, I probably saved people’s lives but as a senator I didn’t see that happening. The fact that everybody at the Senate was working for themselves, I just felt that I was a stranger in the wilderness. That was depressing for me. I did not want to go for re-election but that's a story for another day. So being a politician was the most challenging and I will never do it again.

What qualities have you taken from your father?

My father is very intelligent and I tell people this. I have met many intelligent people throughout my life. I have met some of the world leaders that we all know and they are smart. I think, my father is one of the smartest people of this generation anywhere and he's almost 80. He is also not materialistic. He looks at problems and tries to solve them, which is what leadership in Africa lacks. When he made decisions, he might have made the wrong ones sometimes, but they were all in the interest of the country. His ego may be a big issue but in terms of money and material things, he doesn't really care.

I think we are both very outspoken, frank and we can rationalize issues and think them through. It means a lot. I think that I grew up in an environment where your ability to solve problems, read a lot and understand situations were very important. I didn't grow up thinking that money was the most important thing in life. I didn’t grow up thinking that your parents’ money made you special or different. I grew up with the idea that solving problems makes this world a better place.

I have met some eminent Nigerians who are of the view that your father is the best president Nigeria has ever had? Do you agree with them?

Given the history of Nigeria, for even Africa in general, my father is exceptional. I think he is the best. There is no doubt about that because we have really had bad leadership. A few of our presidents shouldn’t have been made to even run a nursery school let alone a country. So, we have had that problem. I have mentioned already, my father is not greedy or selfish. I agree my father is the best because he was the only one trying to solve problems. He couldn’t solve every one of them but he is the only leader apart from maybe the ones in the early 1960's. What messed up his leadership was his ego. You can understand the ego if you are that smart in a country that has some leaders who are morons.

CultureOoni Of Ife, Wife, 3 Others To Float Local & International Airline by TolstoyFan(op): 7:11am On Sep 03, 2016

The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi , is known for his business acumen and philanthropy. For over 12 years, the first-class king before his emergence as Ooni successfully ran a conglomerate of companies in the Real Estate, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) sectors locally and abroad.Right now, Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi has shown interest in the aviation sector. To this end, the company, Oodua Royal Aviation Company Limited, which the Ooni and his wife HRH Yeyeluwa Wuraola Ogunwusi are directors/trustees, has applied to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority(NCAA) for grant of Air Transport License(ATL) to operate scheduled and non-scheduled passengers and cargo services within and outside Nigeria. Other members on the board of directors/trustees are Captain Omololu Majekodunmi; Mr. Adedapo Abiodun; and Mr. Ayodeji Ojuroye.

Meanwhile earlier this week, two Nigerian airlines Aero Contractors, and First Nation suspended their services. Management of Aero Contractors said, “The impact of the external environment has been very harsh on our operational performance, hence management decision to suspend scheduled services operations indefinitely effective September 1, 2016, pending when the external opportunities and a robust sustainable and viable plan is in place for Aero Contractors to recommence its scheduled services." With First Nation, the NCAA management said, “The First Nation Airlines on its part is in the middle of an Engine Replacement Programme for one of its aircrafts. Another aircraft is due for mandatory maintenance as allowed by the regulatory authority. In these circumstances, these airlines clearly cannot continue to undertake schedule operations, hence the inevitable recourse to self regulatory suspension.”

Politics‘I Am Not Afraid Of ‘Juju’ In Ondo State’ – Jigawa Gov. Badaru Abubakar by TolstoyFan(op): 12:26am On Sep 02, 2016
Gov. Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State has said he is not afraid of charms and will conduct the Ondo APC primary election transparently. Abubakar said this while briefing newsmen in Abuja after being sworn in as the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Ondo Primary Election Committee. He said, ”Free and fair election will solve the problem. If they believe we are free, fair and transparent, they will accept the result. Well in the first place, I don’t believe in juju so certainly I am surely not afraid.

“I don’t know of any imposition, my duty there is to be free, fair and transparent and I think that is the only thing that will help the party.” He said the issue of identifying the delegates was important and their international passport, permanent voter card or national identity card would suffice. ”Any one of the three will be able to solve the identification problem,” he said. Abubakar advised other governors to cut expenditure in order to overcome the embarrassment of owing staff salaries. He said once the workers were paid and happy, any state could move forward and be productive.

Politics‘Allow Us Carry Lesser Arms And Relocate At Night’- Herdsmen To Gov. Fayose by TolstoyFan(op): 12:31am On Sep 01, 2016
Fulani herdsmen from Ilorin, Kwara State, who are resident in Ekiti state have criticised the new grazing law signed by Governor Ayodele Fayose. The herdsmen under the aegis of Jamu Nate Fulbe Association of Nigeria spoke through their legal adviser, Mr. Umar Imam, on Wednesday. According to Imam, “The law of the federation on terrorism is very clear and no one can be charged for terrorism for carrying lesser arms like cutlasses, catapults and knives during the grazing period as contained in the Ekiti new law. I have made it in my submission during the public hearing on the bill in the Ekiti state House of Assembly that these Fulani herdsmen used to use these lesser weapons for certain purposes that can make grazing easier.

“I also told them that movement at night while relocating from one place to another was to ensure that they don’t wreak havoc on the people during the day while relocating to other towns. I expected the state government to have taken care of these in the new law rather than total ban. What the state government ought to have done is to allow whoever wants to relocate at night to take permit from a certain government authority or inform their Seriki, but banning them from moving at night may not help the situation, it will make their jobs difficult.”

Meanwhile the Seriki of the association in Ekiti, Alhaji Ahmadu Mahmoud, appealed to the governor to amend the new law, to allow his members to carry lesser arms to ward off attacks during grazing. In his words, Mahmoud said, “We agree with the governor on the grazing period of between 7am and 6pm, but we should be allowed to carry lesser arms and relocate at night. How can somebody who wants to carry his cattle numbering hundreds from Ekiti to places like Lokoja, Ibadan or Ilorin move during the day? These places are densely populated and it will create traffic congestion and confusion everywhere. The government must look into all of these.”

Travel'Why Aero Contractors Is Shutting Down Indefinitely' - Management by TolstoyFan(op): 1:17pm On Aug 31, 2016
Nigeria’s second largest commercial carrier,Aero Contractors Airlines, has announced the suspension of its scheduled services beginning from Thursday September 1, 2016. This was disclosed in a statement signed by the carrier’s management on Wednesday. The airline said, “The impact of the external environment has been very harsh on our operational performance, hence management decision to suspend scheduled services operations indefinitely effective September 1, 2016, pending when the external opportunities and a robust sustainable and viable plan is in place for Aero Contractors to recommence its scheduled services.

"The implication of the suspension of scheduled services operations extends to all staffs directly and indirectly involved in providing services as they are effectively to proceed on indefinite leave of absence during the period of non-services. We are aware of the impact this will have on our staff and our highly esteemed customers, hence we have initiated moves to ensure that we are able to return back to operations within the shortest possible time, offering reliable, safe and secure operations, which the airline is known for.” This decision has unfolded six months after the Asset Management Company of Nigeria took over the management of Aero Contractors and dissolved the board of the company. AMCON thereafter appointed a manager to run the affairs of the company in interim capacity.

Politics"Niger-Delta Avengers Worse Than Boko Haram" - Ango Abdullahi by TolstoyFan(op): 2:59am On Aug 31, 2016
A former Minister of Education and member of the Northern Elders Forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, has said Nigeria's unity is negotiable and if Nigerians find it difficult to live together in peace, the component units should find it convenient to go their separate ways. Abdullahi made this known on Tuesday in Abuja during the public presentation of two books: Boko Haram: The Charade vs Reality and The Life and Times of Umaru Turakin Bauchi, written by a former Diplomatic Editor of the Voice of America and now visiting Professor in ABU, Zaria, Hadiza Wada.At the presentation during his speech, Abdullahi also called on the Federal Government to fight the Niger Delta Avengers before fighting members of the Boko Haram sect.

Speaking on Nigeria's challenges, Abdullahi, a former vice-chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University(ABU), said, "Our greatest challenge today is political instability, created, unfortunately, by politicians and the Nigerian elite. We are responsible for the conditions we are experiencing today and that we have experienced over the years. This is the basis on which we have made slow or no progress in our development. We are hearing about the restructuring of Nigeria. We’re hearing about secession; we are hearing all sorts of things(sic) and who are the promoters of this rhetoric?

"These are from elite of the country. They’re right to say their minds, but they should also leave me to say my mind when the time is right. If Lord Lugard made a mistake in 1914, let’s correct it now. Why not? If Nigerians cannot live together and allow peace and development to take place, then let’s go our different ways and to our different places, so we can concentrate and develop our children and grandchildren in peace. There’s nothing wrong with that. So many countries have gone through that before. So, I don’t believe in all this emotion and sentiment that Nigeria is indissoluble. There’s nothing like indissolubility in any country.

“Take Britain, they’ve been a model for 1,000 years of democracy; and then, a year or two ago, Scotland, that had been in the United Kingdom for about 350 years, opted to go for a referendum to get out; same problem with Ireland. Soviet Union was only a superpower many years ago; today, 12 or 13 countries are there. So what is so special about Nigeria? If we find truly that we cannot develop and guarantee the welfare of our people as a nation and the solution is to go our separate ways, why not? So you see, this is the thing we have to always discuss at all times honestly.” Speaking on Boko Haram, he said, “You ask the question: where did Boko Haram get their sophistication and articulation from? No doubt from external connections, but external connections can only thrive if they have internal connections in the country itself.

"But the real offence: people who ‘knew’ and should have spoken out did not do such. Some of us, including my teacher and I, went to see (former President Goodluck) Jonathan to discuss it. Some days later, we heard there was going to be dialogue but then two weeks later, a state of emergency was declared and Boko Haram was banned. So, the question is: who are you talking with if you have banned Boko Haram? Yes we accepted Boko Haram for those who described them as ‘Islamist terrorists’, fair enough; but what about economic terrorists? In the Niger Delta, for example, people who came out openly and said they’re avenging something and that they’re fighting to avenge something, they’re worse than what’s happening in this country; they’re worse than Boko Haram. If you’re not going to fight Avengers, then stop fighting Boko Haram.”

Politics'How I've Handled My 10-year Access To Boko Haram' - Journalist, Ahmad Salkida by TolstoyFan(op): 12:43am On Aug 09, 2016
Associate Professor of Journalism and Emerging Media at Kennesaw State University, Dr. Farooq Kperogi{F.K.}, yesterday, had a tweet session for journalist Ahmad Salkida{A.S} who for some years has reported various beats, the most popular being his reports on Boko Haram{BH}. Excerpts of the tweet session.

A.S: As you were once a reporter, editor and now teacher of journalism what is your advice to me and others reporting conflicts?

F.K: Remember that your reporting can make or break the nation, so be sensitive to what you report on avoid perpetrating stereotypes, reach out to be people who want to bring about peace, not just the war mongers.Be faithful to the facts, let accuracy and verifiability be your watchwords, report all sides to a conflict. It’s a cardinal ethical principle in journalism that we not report on what we’ve not verified.Don’t propagate their willful propaganda that you know to be false. Don’t join them.

A.S: I’ve tried to stick to verifiable claims, reason why I have many materials I obtained, but NEVER published.

F.K: We need peace in Nigeria, and if it would take your intervention to bring this about, why not?

A.S:What is the red line for a journalist with professional access to a terror group?

F.K.: In the interest of the reading public–and of journalism itself–it would help to ignore them. It is natural to harbor suspicions of your colleagues if you’ve been a victim of their vicious professional jealousy. Maybe professional jealousy?

A.S: Is it fair enough that I hardly collaborate with journalists in reporting Boko Haram because of this? Journalists have slandered me far more than security agents, it was a journo that wrote a petition against me

F.K: It is not in the traditional sense of a journalist’s duties, but in the norms of conflict-sensitive reporting, it may be. It is not a crime. It is commendable journalistic bravado

A.S: I’ve predicted nearly everything right, like female suicide bombers in April 2012, but why do I get scorned even by journalists?

F.K.: That is commendable.

A.S: I have also been contacted to negotiate in the past by government, is this part of a reporter’s social responsibility?

F.K: There is always a clash between the needs of government/security agencies and the public’s need to know

A.S.: I can go to Sambisa now to interview Shekau at my own risk, is this a journalistic feat or a crime? I stayed on the story I built a network of sources without betraying my sources, it is difficult for anyone to beat me on this.

F.K.: Journalists have an obligation to reflect all the sides of a story, not just two sides

A.S: Is telling two sides to a story in a war, unethical in journalism? If is ok, why the lack of interest?

F.K: I wouldn’t know. Perhaps it’s because the exclusive access to Boko Haram is limited to you

A.S: Why am I singled out for attacks and not my editors or publishers for my exclusive reports? My interest is ONLY to report as accurately as possible, nothing more.

F.K: Good, ethical journalists protect the confidentiality of their sources. They’d rather go to jail than reveal their sources. Then there is nothing even remotely unethical about your access to the group. You should be commended, not threatened. So long as your access is not a consequence of your membership of the group, it is ethical.

A.S.: I’ve come under threats to betray my sources, even when I made it clear it won’t end the war, what can you say?

F.K.: It is not only ethical, it is also praiseworthy.

A.S.: Sir, is having access to sources in Boko Haram for the use of writing reports unethical? I started with my career trajectory before the Boko Haram story broke. But as someone who was nearly summarily executed and arrested several times for my reports, I always turn them down…I’ve on several occasions declined to even interview Shekau, an opportunity any journalist will run for. Sadly, that was how I ended up being viewed with suspicion. I can get all the scoops I asked, but out of fear I introduced some reporters or forfeit my scoops to avoid being which earned me to acquire invaluable sources. I became the lone journalist in the past 10 years who has enjoyed rare access to BH. I believe it holds potential for a major news break. Despite little interest by many editors I remained persistent. I even dispatched the first ever report on Boko Haram in 2006.

PoliticsDoyin Okupe Gives Blow-by-Blow Account Of Deals With Sambo Dasuki,Health Status by TolstoyFan(op): 5:40pm On Jul 17, 2016
Former Senior Special Assistant to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, who was released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) due to health conditions, has opened up on his travails with the anti-graft agency. Okupe took to his Facebook page with a statement. Excerpts:

The facts of my case with EFCC.

In my interactions with efcc I have been asked to explain 3 things only so far.
1. Why I received N50m from the Fmr NSA, at the onset of my appointment, and what I used it for.
2. Why I was being paid N10m monthly by the ONSA.
3. Why I received another N50m from the NSA in October 2014.

These are the ONLY subject of interrogation with the commission so far.

My explanations.

1. The initial N50m was approved by the President to be paid to me from His Security vote. N10m was to furnish my rented living apartment and another N10m for my office.
The balance N30m was approved as take off grant.

2. The N10m I received from the ONSA monthly was to run my office, pay salaries of staffs, including overheads, pay expenses for our numerous press conferences, pay for publications in newspapers, magazines, local and foreign, television programs, bulletins, and media consultants who assist and facilitate our work. I had about 23 staff, 11 were graduates out of which 5 were masters degrees holders. Details were submitted to efcc.

3. The second N50m was approved again by Mr President when I reported to him that the monthly allowance has been cut from N10m to N5m and that I was no longer in position to keep running a 1hr NTA network program called INSIGHT which was aired 9-10am every Friday. We paid NTA about N1.2m monthly for airtime. Two presenters were paid N600m monthly. We paid for tapes and Editting per program. Besides we also pay honorarium for guests either directly or inform of hotel bills for those outside Abuja, or transportation. This cost averagely N500,000 weekly or about N 2m monthly. All in all we spend about N4m monthly on the program. Mr President promised to help with the expenses. About a few months later when we had incurred some debts the NSA sent me this N50m which was to cover the cost of the program for 12 months(12×N4m=N48m)

News paper Trial
I saw strange figures like N 162m fraud, 85m fraud etc. Also mention was made of dubious payments of N13m, N65m from contracts supposedly obtained from chachanga LGA in Niger state.

The Fact.

My company Romix soilfix was one of the over 20 construction companies who were duly awarded contracts for rural roads some 5yrs ago by the Niger state govt. Due to lack of funds contractors were paid irregularly making the job to drag. The job is still on going. The relationship of this to my service as snr special assistant to President is still not clear.

My Health status.

I confided in the officers of the commission about my health situation for them to understand why where and how I sleep was important to my overall well being.

Without clearance or authorisation by me this information was revealed to the media. I woke up to hear it on radio broadcast nationwide and was published in many newspapers. This is a sad development and a definite breach of the confidence I reposed on the commission as an institution of government.

I was born with sinus bradycadia, a non disease based slowness of the heart. It precluded me from vigorous exercise from childhood but I have by God’s Grace been able to live a normal and active life. With age the slowness grew worse and life threatening. I sought medical help and went through a procedure at the Arrhythmia cardiac Research center in Atlanta, where this defect was corrected. Its just a year ago and I am still under satellite monitor from the USA. This is what I revealed to the efcc and they made it a public issue.

I have been in public service in more than 20years, because of my pedigree, I have by deliberate policy avoided anything that will bring shame to me, my name and family.

In spite of my high level involvement in politics and government, I have never done directly or indirectly any federal government contracts. In the whole of this world I have only two house. One in Lagos and another in my home town.

I have no house elsewhere including Abuja.

It is a pity that the situation in the country is so bad that everybody believes that there are no men with honour in politics or government. It is not true. I have submitted all my personal and company accounts to efcc. I have nothing to hide.

I am proud of who I am and how far the Lord has taken me. My present travails and trial will become a good testimony for me and my family in Jesus Name.

Former Senior Special Assistant to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC). Okupe was quizzed by the anti-graft agency earlier this week, and the second time within a month over his alleged role in a reported graft to the tune of N162 million reportedly disbursed to him from the Office of former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki. Okupe was released yesterday by EFCC because he claimed to have a heart condition and presented a medical report to back his claim.

Meanwhile Okupe returned to Twitter and this time a popular blogger ‏@MrAbuSidiq whose blog {www.abusidiqu.com} published a post headlined ‘$2.1b Arms Scandal: EFCC Interrogates Okupe Over N162m ‘Illicit Payment’ took the PDP chieftain on on his alleged role in the misappropriation of the $2.1 billion arms funds. Politics'Ali Modu-Sheriff's Security Men Received From Diezani's N23.2billion Largesse' by TolstoyFan(op): 12:39pm On Jun 16, 2016
The embattled chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff on Wednesday in Maiduguri, Borno State, honoured an invitation by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as regards the N23.29 billion campaign funds disbursed by former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke. Responding to an enquiry on whether his boss was actually invited by the EFCC, Sheriff's spokesman, Inuwa Bwala said: “You may recall that reports last week indicated that former Minister of State for Power, Mohammed Wakil and former minority leader in the House of Representatives, Mohammed Kumalia, claimed to have earmarked N40million from money given to them by the PDP for elections for security men. They were said to have claimed to route the money through His Excellency (Sheriff). We did not initially believe they said so until somebody from the EFCC hinted Sheriff. He (Sheriff) seized the opportunity of his condolence visit to Maiduguri to verify their claims, and was informed that they only claimed to have shared the money to security men in his house, but without his personal involvement whatsoever. This is the truth.”

PoliticsDavid Mark Allegedly Lobbying PDP,APC Senators To Return As Senate President by TolstoyFan(op): 2:55pm On Mar 24, 2016
By JUMI RHODES

There are unconfirmed reports that former Senate President, Senator David Mark - a 4th-term senator representing Benue South Senatorial District on the platform of People's Democratic Party(PDP); and immediate past senate president - is reportedly lobbying some PDP and All Progressives Congress(APC) senators in a bid to succeed the incumbent Senator Bukola Saraki who is being tried by the Code of Conduct Trial(CCT) for allegedly falsifying his assets.

This is coming even as some APC senators who opposed the election of Bukola Saraki as Senate President, held a meeting together with his key supporters from the same party, laying aside differences that for months polarised the ruling party’s senate caucus. The meeting between the anti-Saraki group Unity Forum and pro-Saraki Like Minds, had in attendance 10 senators – 5 from each of the two camps and it held at the Asokoro residence of (serving) Senator Aliyu Wammako, a former Sokoto State governor.

In a related development, earlier today, the Justice Danladi Umar-led panel held that the 13-count criminal charge the Federal Government entered against Saraki was valid and competent in law. The CCT said both the law that established it and the 1999 constitution, as amended, conferred it with the requisite jurisdiction to hear and determine the case against the defendant.

Politics'Our Successors Have Forgotten Us' - Former PDP Governors/Deputies,To Form Forum by TolstoyFan(op): 1:38am On Mar 24, 2016
Former governors and deputy governors who were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have said their successors relegated them to the background once they won elections in their various states. To this end, they are considering forming a forum of former governors and former deputy governors to fight their cause. This was discussed when the former governors and deputy governors met with the party’s National Chairman, Senator Modu Sheriff, at the national headquarters in Abuja. Some of the former governors present at the meeting were Babangida Mu’azu (Niger), Ramalan Yero (Kebbi), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Ikedi Ohakim (Imo), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Abdulkadir Kure (Niger), Idris Wada (Kogi), Achike Udenwa (Imo), Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano), Gbenga Daniel (Ogun), Theodore Orji (Abia), and Sule Lamido (Jigawa). The former deputy governors present included Iyiola Omisore (Osun) and Etuk Effiong (Akwa Ibom).

Backing the former governors and deputy governors on their claim, Sheriff said, “As a former governor, I know what a governor goes through to win elections. You are the leaders of the party. Incumbent governors are also leaders too. Former governors must be carried along. They must be involved in all the affairs of the party so that we can get it right.” Meanwhile Dr. Sam Egwu, who spoke on behalf of former South-East governors and deputies, hailed Sheriff saying, “This meeting has shown that the party has not forgotten those that started the party. Most of us were in the meeting that marked the beginning of the PDP. But the convention in Nigeria is that the moment you are out of office, you are forgotten. Former governors that we helped put in office forgot us. It was like frustration for most of us. But because we believed in the party, we stayed back.”

*Explains why he launched campaign against pipeline vandalism

By Egufe Yafugborhi

CHIEF Ayiri Emami, investor and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has said his benefactor and former Delta state governor, Chief James Ibori who is serving jail term in the United Kingdom, UK, would return home to Nigeria not later than July this year.

Chief Emami, confidant of Chief Ibori, disclosed this on Friday in Warri where he hinted on his planned project to mobilise stakeholders and resources on a campaign to bring lasting solution to the menace of vandalisation of oil facilities which he said was causing huge damage to the nation’s economy. He said, “There have been speculations as to when Ibori would return, but I can confidently tell you that by June or at most July, he would return home to Nigeria and we all need him, especially in Delta to sanitize things again.

“If he were here, a lot of things would not have happened. Ibori was one of those who predicted that Goodluck Jonathan and the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, would not win the 2015 Presidential election. It was fear of the unknown that made his brother, former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan to remain in PDP. I listened to Ibori, I had to leave” On content of his campaign to end pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta, Ayiri said, “Far from applying of force of arms to shut out the vandals. The whole idea is to ensure that the oil and gas being taken from the region make meaning in the lives of the host communities. We’ll not achieve this if the vandalisation continues.

“The gas Nigeria produces supplies electricity to several parts of the country, but the communities from where it is being extracted don’t have the electricity to use. The crude oil from the land is refined into fuel but there are no fuel distribution outlets to serve riverine communities so they perpetually buy from the black markets.

“People are shouting now about fuel scarcity because of recent irregularity in importation, but year in year out, coastal communities in Niger Delta never get fuel at the normal pump price. My campaign to unfold soon is to ensure adequate provision of infrastructure and opportunities in the oil producing environment so that vandalism will stop”, Ayiri added.

Culture"We Met Ooni's New Wife Wura 1 Month Ago.Rumours About Her Are Lies"-His Sisters by TolstoyFan(op): 6:53am On Mar 15, 2016
By JUMI RHODES

Fresh facts have emerged as to how the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, sealed his plans to marry his new wife Olori Wuraola. Recall on 12th March 2016, their traditional wedding held and the first-class monarch was represented his father, siblings, and other close family members. The wedding thanksgiving held the next day at the Ooni's Palace in the ancient town of Ile-Ife. Expectedly, the 2 ceremonies pulled together eminent Nigerians.

But how did Ooni of Ife perfect his plans to marry Wuraola {nee Obanor}? In an interview his 3 sisters recently granted, they revealed they met Olori Wuraola about 1 month ago when their brother introduced her to the family and they all accepted her. According to Princess Adesola Ogunwusi-Olojede,"We only met her(Olori Wuraola) not quite long. I will say like a month and she is going to be a good mother and a good wife to the whole Yoruba race. She is a pleasant woman and a very accommodating one at that. She is a good wife that will take care of the customs and tradition of Yoruba and Ife. She is a good woman that will take care of her husband."

Another of the Ogunwusi sisters, Princess Folashade Ogunwusi-Fadairo said,"Kabiyesi didnt meet her a long time ago, it was the oracle who revealed her to Kabiyesi. They never met before. The irumoles are still alive and they are doing wonders. You know a lot of things have been happening since they introduced the new Oloori to the world. Lots of people were saying evil things about her. Majority of what they said are not correct. They are just running her down. But to the glory of God we still married her. Is that not wonderful and marvelous? I have to say she is well mannered and highly cultured." Another Ogunwusi sister, Princess Bimpe Ogunwusi-Daodu also glowing spoke of Olori Wuraola Ogunwusi that,"You have to know that Kabiyesi is not an ordinary man anymore. He sees things and knows things and these were revealed to him and to some of us that this is going to be happening. I am not surprised that Queen Wuraola walked in and she is going to be Ooni’s wife."

The Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwanu Akiolu has called on Yoruba traditional rulers to desist from making statements capable of causing disaffection among the various traditional institutions in the country, stating that emphasis should be on fostering peaceful coexistence. Akiolu made this known yesterday in Lagos when the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli, visited him at his palace. In his words, Akiolu said: “By the grace of God, I pray for peace and progress. Olu of Warri, this is your home. It shall be well with you. God will grant you a peaceful and prosperous reign. You were not poor before you became the Olu, I have been blessed more than I was before I became the Oba, and you will also be blessed beyond measures. We, Yoruba Obas, are not supposed to be making inflammatory statements. All the Yoruba Obas should refrain from making statements capable of causing disunity. God gave us one thing in this Lagos; all those who make progress in this country started from Lagos. There is nowhere in Lagos we discriminate against anybody.”

When the immediate past Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II joined his ancestors, the new king was expected to be chosen from the Giesi Ruling House. This brought to fore 2 brothers Prince Adetunji Ogunwusi, and Prince Adeyeye Ogunwusi amongst the scores of interested contenders. Shortly after His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, was coronated, there were reports that his emergence reportedly strained the relationship with him and his elder brother Prince Adetunji Ogunwusi.

During the coronation ceremony, the 3 Ogunwusi sisters { Princesses Folasade, Adesola, and Adebimpe Ogunwusi} were seen up and doing but not much was seen of Prince Adetunji Ogunwusi. Less than 4 days to the royal wedding of the Ooni of Ife to Wuraola Obanor, Prince Adetunji Ogunwusi convened a meeting on Tuesday, 8th March 2016 with their father Chief Ropo Ogunwusi(Baba Oba) and his siblings in attendance at his Victoria Garden City(VGC) home in Lagos. This reconciliation has shut down speculations of disunity among the Ogunwusis.
