BusinessHow To Make Kuli Kuli ( The Crunchy West African Snack) With #650 by Toma96(op): 6:29pm On Apr 10, 2018
For an average Nigerian and some citizens of some West African countries;
“There is nothing more satisfying like getting home on a hot afternoon to meet Garri (Cassava flakes), chill water, Sugar (may be) and some rolls of Kulikuli.”
Kulikuli is one favourite snack (though many don’t know it is a snack) in Nigeria and some West African countries.
Below are some West African countries where KuliKuli is popular, they include Nigeria, Northern Cameroon, Ghana and Benin.
The snacks come in different sizes and shapes. With the amazing feature been it Cheapness which is why it is loved by most people living an average life.
Apart from been taken with Garri, Kulikuli can be taken with koko, fura, kamu; and is sometimes put in salad, although in a grounded form. It is available in virtually all markets in Nigeria. Despite it origin been traced to Northern part of Nigeria, it had become one snack that is consumed by all and sundries.
However, many of us eat Kulikuli without how its been prepared. Below are the list of ingredients needed for kulikuli preparation:
Groundnut 8 Cups (#450)
Onions (#50)
Dried pepper (#50)
Salt / Sugar (1/2 Teaspoon)
Total cost of preparation is less than a thousand
naira.
PREPARATION
Sun dry groundnuts (dry very well in sun)
Heat the groundnut to make it more coarse (put it in a pot and heat)
Peel or remove the husk with the aid of bottle
Separate the husk from the groundnut
Add pepper and onions
Ground with grounding machine ( here it cost me #100)
After grounding, pour inside a bowl
Add sugar or salt (mostly salt is been used and likewise the two)
Mix properly (mixing can be in form of pressing)
Press the mixed mixture until enough groundnut oil is gotten from it
Cut into different shapes and sizes of your choice (can be round or pencil form)
Pour the extracted oil (groundnut oil) into the frying pan or pot
Fry to your taste.
My advise to sellers and makers of Kulikuli, this snack needs to be rebranded and packaged so that it can go beyond Africa.

TravelGiraffes – The Tallest Land Animals by Toma96(op):
Hello up there! Why do so many people look up to giraffes—besides the obvious reason? The long and short of it is that they are a wonderful example of nature’s creativity. Giraffes are the tallest land animals.
SPECIES: camelopardalis
FAMILY: Giraffidae
CLASS: Mammalia (Mammals)
12 Facts About Giraffes
1. Giraffes are the tallest mammals on Earth. Their legs alone are taller than many humans—about 6 feet.
2. They can run as fast as 35 miles an hour over short distances, or cruise at 10 mph over longer distances.
3. A giraffe’s neck is too short to reach the ground. As a result, it has to awkwardly spread its front legs or kneel to reach the ground for a drink of water.
4. Giraffes only need to drink once every few days. Most of their water comes from all the plants they eat.
5. Giraffes spend most of their lives standing up; they even sleep and give birth standing up.
6. The giraffe calf can stand up and walk after about an hour and within a week, it starts to sample vegetation.
7. Despite the females’ attempts to stand over their calves during attacks by lions, spotted hyenas, leopards and African wild dogs (4), many calves are killed in their first few months.
8. A giraffe’s spots are much like human fingerprints. No two individual giraffes have exactly the same pattern.
9. Both male and female giraffes have two distinct, hair-covered horns called ossicones. Male giraffes use their horns to sometimes fight with other males.
10. Giraffes only need 5 to 30 minutes of sleep in a 24-hour period! They often achieve that in quick naps that may last only a minute or two at a time.
11. Whilst it was thought that giraffes did not make any sounds, this is now known to be untrue, as giraffes bellow, snort, hiss and make flute-like sounds, as well as low pitch noises beyond the range of human hearing.
12. Giraffes are the world’s tallest mammals. They are uniquely adapted to reach vegetation inaccessible to other herbivores.

FoodYoghurt May Not Be For Everyone by Toma96(op): 7:42am On Jan 19, 2018
Some people need to be cautious with their yoghurt intake, as it may cause adverse effects, especially in those with lactose intolerance or a milk allergy.
Lactose Intolerance
Lactose intolerance occurs when the body lacks lactase, the enzyme needed to break down lactose, which is the sugar found in milk. It leads to various digestive symptoms, such as abdominal pain and diarrhea, after consuming milk products.
Therefore, those with lactose intolerance may need to avoid yoghurt.
The best yoghurts for your health contain few ingredients and no added sugar. Aim for a brand that contains probiotics.
Yogurt is rich in nutrients and may boost your health when consumed regularly.
It may help reduce the risk of some diseases, while also benefiting digestive health and weight control.
However, make sure to choose your yoghurt wisely. For maximal health benefits, choose plain, unsweetened varieties that contain probiotics.
What Is Yoghurt and How Is It Made?
Yogurt is a popular dairy product that’s made by the bacterial fermentation of milk.
The bacteria used to make yogurt are called “yoghurt cultures,” which ferment lactose, the natural sugar found in milk.
This process produces lactic acid, a substance that causes milk proteins to curdle, giving yoghurt its unique flavor and texture.
Yoghurt can be made from all types of milk. Varieties made from skim milk are considered fat-free, whereas those made from whole milk are considered full-fat.
Plain yoghurt without added colorants is a white, thick liquid with a tangy flavor.
Unfortunately, most commercial brands contain added ingredients, such as sugarand artificial flavors. These yoghurts are not good for your health.
Health Benefits
1. It’s reach in important nutrients
Yogurt provides almost every nutrient that your body needs. It is especially high in calcium, B vitamins and trace minerals.
2. It’s high in protein
Yogurt, especially the Greek variety, is very high in protein. Protein is helpful for appetite and weight control.
3. Some varieties may benefit Digestive health
Some types of yogurt contain probiotics, which may boost digestive health by reducing the symptoms of common gastrointestinal disorders, such as bloating, diarrhea and constipation.
4. It may strengthen your immune system
Yogurt provides probiotics, vitamins and minerals, all of which may boost immune health and prevent certain illnesses.
5. It may promote weight management
Yogurt is high in protein, which is very filling, and may improve your diet overall. Both of these aspects help with weight management.
6. It may benefit heart health
Regardless of its fat content, yogurt appears to benefit heart health by increasing “good” HDL cholesterol and reducing blood pressure.
7. It may protect against Osteoporosis
Yogurt contains some key nutrients for maintaining bone health, including calcium, protein, potassium, phosphorus and, sometimes, vitamin D.
Yogurt is rich in vitamins and minerals that play a key role in bone health. Consuming it regularly may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

TravelDid You Know This About The White Stork? by Toma96(op): 7:30am On Jan 19, 2018
According to northern European legend, the stork is responsible for bringing babies to new parents. The legend is very ancient, but was popularised by a 19th century Hans Christian Andersen story called ‘The Storks’. German folklore held that storks found babies in caves or marshes and brought them to households in a basket on their backs or held in their beaks. These caves contained ‘stork stones’. The babies would then be given to the mother or dropped down the chimney. Households would notify when they wanted children by placing sweets for the stork on the window sill.
The White Stork is a popular motif on postage stamps, and it is featured on more than 120 stamps issued by more than 60 stamp-issuing entities.
The White Stork is featured in 2 of Aesop’s Fables – ‘The Fox and the Stork’ and ‘The Farmer and the Stork’.
Storks have little fear of humans if not disturbed, and often nest on buildings in Europe. In Germany, the presence of a strok nest on a house was believed to protect against fires. They were also protected because of the belief that their souls were human.
The Hebrew word for the White Stork is chasidah meaning ‘merciful’ or ‘kind. Greek and Roman mythology portray storks as models of parental devotion, and it was believed that they did not die of old age, but flew to islands and took the appearance of humans.
WHITE STORK HABITAT
The white stork’s preferred habitats are riverbanks, marshes, swamps, ditches, grasslands and meadows. White storks tend to avoid areas that are overgrown with tall trees and shrubs.
WHITE STORK DIET
The white stork is completely diurnal (active during the day). Its preferred feeding grounds are shallow wetlands, grassy meadows and farmland. The white stork is a carnivore and feeds up on a variety of animal from both the ground and from shallow water. Prey includes amphibians, reptiles such as lizards, snakes and frogs, insects, fish, small birds and mammals.
WHITE STORK BEHAVIOUR
White storks are vocal birds who produce a noisy bill-clattering sound made by rapidly opening and closing their beaks which is amplified by the throat pouch which acts as a sound box. Young storks produce croaks, whistles and whines when begging for food and also begin the typical beak clattering.
White storks are gregarious birds who flock in their thousands when on long distance migration routes and when wintering in sub-saharan Africa.
When migrating between Europe and Africa, the white stork avoids crossing the Mediterranian Sea and instead flies via the Levant in the east or the Strait of Gibraltar in the west. This is because the air thermals do not form over the Mediterranean Sea on which it depends upon for long flights. Migrating White Storks use the uplift of air thermals to reduce the effort of long distance flying and therefore able to fly further with less fatigue.
White Stork nests are built by mating pairs. The nests are large, solidly constructed platforms made from sticks and are built in trees in loose colonies close to water sources. Each nest measures 1 – 2 metres (3.3 – 6.6 feet) in depth, 0.8 – 1.5 metre (2.6 – 4.9 feet) in diametre, and 60 – 250 kilograms (130 – 550 pounds) in weight. Nests may be used for several years. Several other bird species often nest within the large nests of the White Stork such as Sparrows, Tree Sparrows and Common Starlings.
The White Stork is famous for building its large stick nests on top of buildings and other structures when suitable trees are unavailable.
The White Stork breeds in larger numbers in areas with open grasslands, particularly grassy areas which are wet or frequently flooded, and less in areas with taller vegetation cover such as forests and shrublands. Non-breeding birds gather into groups of 40 – 50 during the breeding season.
WHITE STORK REPRODUCTION
Most White Storks are monogamous and pair for life. Female storks lay 2 – 5 chalky-white eggs which are laid at two day intervals. Eggs hatch after 33 – 34 days of incubation. The incubation period is shared between both parents.
After hatching, both parents take turns to feed the chicks. Food is placed on the edge of the nest by the parents but water is provided by regurgitation.
When newly hatched, young white storks have pinkish legs and a small black beak with a brown tip. young storks have two successive coats of down. Its body is firstly partly covered with short, sparse downy feathers which are whitish in colour which are replaced after around a week with a fluffy white down. Flight feathers appear after 3 weeks along with black scapulars (shoulder feathers).
The chicks fledge after about 2 months and usually begin breeding when they are 3 – 5 years old. By this time, the young storks plumage is similar to that of the adults.
White storks can live more than 30 years.
Below is a photo of a Mother White Stork taken at the University of Ilorin Zoological Garden.
