Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting period, is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon in line with the Islamic lunar calendar. The festival is one of the most important celebrations in Islam, observed by millions worldwide.

Ramadan is a sacred month during which Muslims fast daily from sunrise to sunset, abstaining from food, drink and other physical needs. It is one of the five pillars of Islam and also emphasises charity, prayer and spiritual reflection.

PoliticsNigeria, UK Sign Mous On Migration, Border Security, Business Visas by Tomson1(op): 2:55am On Mar 20
Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed three major Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering migration partnership, organised immigration crime, border security, and expanded business visas for UK firms operating in Nigeria.

The agreements were announced in a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior on its X handle on Thursday, as part of ongoing engagements during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to the UK.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo was quoted as saying that the deals “reflect Nigeria’s push for a transparent, rules-based migration system that is safe, orderly and mutually beneficial,” adding that they would help tackle “abuse of legal pathways” while strengthening border control.

He noted that the MoUs were also expected to enhance trade and ease business mobility, supporting the Federal Government’s broader economic ambitions.
According to him, the arrangements support Nigeria’s drive toward a trillion-dollar economy under President Bola Tinubu, removing barriers linked to irregular migration.

The statement disclosed that the agreements were signed with the UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and UK Trade Envoy Florence Eshalomi.

The agreements mark a significant step in Nigeria–UK relations, reinforcing cooperation on migration governance, security, and economic development.

The signing of the Nigeria–UK migration and visa agreements comes amid a broader wave of bilateral engagements during President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing two-day visit to the United Kingdom.

One of the highlights of the visit is the £746 million financing deal to modernise Lagos ports.

The Lagos Port Complex in Apapa and the Tin Can Island Port are central to Nigeria’s maritime economy, serving as key gateways for imports and exports.

The ports handle a substantial portion of the country’s cargo traffic and are vital to customs operations, revenue generation, and overall economic activity.

SportsChelsea Hit With £10.75m Fine, Transfer Ban Over Premier League Rule Breaches by Tomson1(op): 5:03pm On Mar 16
Chelsea have been fined a record total of £10.75 million ($14.3 million) for historical breaches of the Premier League’s regulations, the league announced on Monday.

The club have also been handed a one-year first-team transfer ban, suspended for two years, as well as an immediate nine-month academy transfer ban.

In a statement, the Premier League said Chelsea’s current owners voluntarily reported in 2022 that they had evidence of a potential breach of rules relating to third-party payments and financial reporting. The club also reported a potential breach of academy rules in 2025.

“The Premier League has concluded two separate disciplinary processes involving Chelsea F.C., following the club voluntarily self-reporting potential historical breaches of rules,” the league said.

Following an investigation, the Premier League said it had established that between 2011 and 2018, undisclosed illicit payments by third parties associated with Chelsea were made to players, unregistered agents, and other third parties.

“These payments were not disclosed to the football regulatory authorities at the time, including the Premier League. The payments were made for the benefit of Chelsea FC and should have been treated as having been made by the club,” the league said.

“The club has also accepted, among other things, that the making of these payments, as well as the failure to disclose them to the League, constituted a breach of the requirement to act in good faith towards the League.”

Abramovich sold club in 2022

During the period in question, the London club was still owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. He sold the club in 2022, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with a consortium led by U.S. investor Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital taking over in May 2022.

The Premier League said it had also assessed a “series of recalculations of the club’s historical financial submissions”, which took into account the payments made for the benefit of Chelsea. The club accepted a £10 million fine.

Chelsea avoided a points deduction after the Premier League found that “in no scenario would the club have breached the League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules during the relevant periods.”

“The club’s proactive self-reporting, admissions of breach and exceptional cooperation throughout the investigation acted as significant mitigating factors,” the league said.

An investigation into breaches of the Premier League’s Youth Development Rules centred on the registration of academy players by a senior club employee between 2019 and 2022.

Chelsea accepted an immediate nine-month ban on registering academy players from Premier League and EFL clubs, along with a £750,000 fine.

The sanctions take effect immediately, with the club also paying the full costs of the league’s investigation and disciplinary processes.

“From the outset of this process, the club has treated these matters with the utmost seriousness, providing full cooperation to all relevant regulators,” Chelsea said in a statement.

The financial sanction is the highest ever imposed by the Premier League. The previous record fine (£5.5 million) was given to West Ham United in 2007.

PoliticsI Have No Issue With Tunji-Ojo, We Are Both APC Leaders – Aiyedatiwa by Tomson1(op): 5:59am On Mar 14
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has again dismissed claims of a rift between him and the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, insisting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state remains united.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Aiyedatiwa said he has no personal issues with the minister, stressing that politics naturally involves differing interests.

“The young man you mentioned, the Hon. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, I don’t have any issue with him. If you ask him, he will tell you the same. Politics is laden with interest, so different people have different interests. There is no fight, no division. We are members of the same family, members of the same APC,” the governor said.

He further clarified that Tunji-Ojo primarily works and resides in Abuja, and any perception of tension between them is baseless.

“I don’t have anything to do with the minister. He lives in Abuja and works in Abuja. We are working together as one. Interest differs and there are levels in leadership, but that does not mean division,” the governor said.

He added, “Those who believe in his own leadership, they are part of the LG and State executives. So, we are working together as one. Yes, interest differs and there are levels in leadership. BTO is a leader in his own right as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that is a level.

“I’m a governor and that’s another level of leadership. So, there are some members of the party that believe in one person or another. We have senators, members of the House of Representatives and State Assembly who have their own followers too and those who believe in them.”

Aiyedatiwa also denied claims that he is pushing members away from the party, describing the APC as “so big that you cannot drive people away.”

The governor said the party continues to attract new entrants, citing the recent defection of Agboola Ajayi, the PDP governorship candidate in the last election, as an example.

“Some people have different interests or notions. The party is so big now that you can’t drive or chase people away because new entrants, new people are joining us. For example, the PDP governorship candidate, who contested against me in the last governorship election (Agboola Ajayi) has defected into the APC as we speak.

“Don’t forget that he scored about 150,000 votes which is almost a winning figure in previous governorship election who won the governorship seat in the past.

And I scored 666,781 votes, the highest ever in the history of the governorship election in Ondo State. For the fact that I have such figures means I’m very popular among the people. They want me. They preferred me at the time which is still the same thing right now. So, I’m not chasing anybody away and there is no attack from me to anybody.”

Aiyedatiwa also highlighted that the APC controls the entire state legislature.

“Today, for the first time, all 26 members of the House of Assembly are APC members. Everyone is working together as one, despite differences in levels of leadership. There are senators, House of Representatives and State Assembly members with their own followers, but we remain united,” he said.

The governor emphasized that the party remains the “only viable political option in the state.”

“Nobody can leave the party. Ondo State is APC. There is no alternative. Don’t forget we just had our state congress. Everyone who believes in leadership is part of the LG and State executives,” Aiyedatiwa said.

The governor’s comments come amid speculation about internal disagreements within the APC in Ondo State, following defections and competing political interests.

Nigeria Police Force on Friday, dismissed allegations of forgery, alteration, falsification, and unlawful production of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate levelled against the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, describing the claims as baseless.

Speaking on the matter, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the police found no evidence to support the allegations after conducting a thorough investigation.

According to him, the investigation established that there was no proof of forgery, alteration, falsification, or unlawful production of the minister’s NYSC certificate.

“After an exhaustive investigation into the allegations, it has been established that there is no evidence whatsoever of forgery, alteration, falsification or unlawful production of the minister’s NYSC certificate,” Hundeyin said.

He explained that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was contacted during the investigation and confirmed that the certificate in question was duly issued to the minister.

“The NYSC was contacted and it was verified that the certificate was duly issued by the corps to the minister. The allegations are therefore unfounded,” he added.

The development comes a day after youth and civil society groups staged a protest in Abuja over the alleged certificate forgery involving the minister.

The demonstrators accused Tunji-Ojo of providing conflicting information regarding his NYSC records, which they said raised concerns about integrity in public office.

Addressing journalists during the protest, one of the demonstrators said the minister had yet to publicly respond to the allegations.

“We have not heard from him. He has not come out to clarify to the public whether what is being said is right or wrong,” the protester said.

The protesters also argued that in similar circumstances, some public officials had resigned from office when faced with such allegations, insisting that accountability should apply equally to all public office holders.

“We want accountability, and we want everyone to be treated equally. What is good for one person should be good for all. If other ministers could resign over similar issues, we do not see why he should still remain in office,” the protester added.

They warned that failure to properly address such allegations could erode public trust in government institutions, particularly among young Nigerians, and undermine the credibility of public offices at the federal level.
