Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has unveiled the Federal Government’s ambitious strategy to revamp the Nation’s border security infrastructure.

Speaking in a candid interview with civic advocate Segalink on X-Space, the Minister revealed major strides in securing Nigeria’s air borders, noting that 80–90% of previous vulnerabilities have now been addressed, as earlier promised.

He credited this progress to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s results-driven leadership style, describing him as a leader who expects performance, not excuses, from his appointees.

“We’ve made tremendous progress on our air borders,” Tunji-Ojo affirmed. “Years ago, red-listed individuals and terrorists could pass through undetected. Today, our airports are no-go areas for such threats.”

A key milestone in this transformation, the Minister noted, was Nigeria’s inclusion in the ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD) in Montreal, an international verification system that has enhanced the country’s credibility and security interoperability.

Despite these gains, challenges remain across Nigeria’s extensive 4,047-kilometer land borders. To address this, the Federal Government has approved the recruitment of 10,000 Immigration officers, to strengthen boots on ground and with a particular focus on enhancing border presence in the Sahel region. The Minister intimated that the process will begin soon.

“We’re not just increasing numbers,” he stressed. “We’re building resilient systems designed to outlast us. This administration is committed to solving tomorrow’s problems today, not deferring them to future generations.”

Tunji-Ojo also addressed the persistent spread of misinformation, pointing out that many issues portrayed as current challenges are, in fact, legacy problems that have long been resolved.

“In many instances, what we see is a deliberate recycling of issues from three or four years ago, presented as if they’re happening today,” he said. “This distorts public perception and undermines the progress that has genuinely been made.”

On passport processing, the Minister clarified the $50 fee paid by applicants abroad, noting that the funds go directly to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and foreign missions, not the Nigeria Immigration Service, stressing that the initiative began in the last administration. He also explained that passport personalization has been centralized at the Immigration Headquarters in Abuja, in line with global best practices.

“We are building a system designed to withstand abuse, especially in the diaspora, where there have been cases of non-Nigerians securing passports through compromised channels,” he stated.

Highlighting Nigeria’s growing international credibility, Tunji-Ojo disclosed that institutions such as the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), INTERPOL, and the US Department of Homeland Security are now engaging Nigeria proactively.

“We’re no longer an afterthought,” he said. “We’re being invited to the table, not because we lobbied, but because the world sees our genuine commitment to reform.”

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of vision and accountability in public service, “We understand that we won’t be remembered for the 99% success, but for the 1% failure. That’s why we’re focused on results. Our job is not to complain. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed us to solve Nigeria’s problems and that is what we are doing.”

As Nigeria fortifies its borders under a renewed mandate of innovation, accountability, and global collaboration, the Minister’s remarks signal a decisive shift toward a safer and more secure future.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged extortion of N5.2 million by officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The directive follows a viral social media post accusing some NSCDC personnel of extorting the sum from a group of young men who were reportedly travelling from Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, to Akure, Ondo State.

Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on Tuesday by his media aide, Babatunde Alao, expressed strong condemnation of the alleged misconduct.

He added that the government would not tolerate indiscipline among paramilitary personnel.
“We will not tolerate any form of misconduct from our security agencies.

“We are building a paramilitary that is disciplined, professional, and serves Nigeria and Nigerians with a sense of dignity and patriotism. In this case, we will ensure that justice is upheld and that security personnel serve with forthrightness,” the minister was quoted as saying.

The Minister noted that any officer found guilty would face the full weight of the law, reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and abuse of power within the security ranks.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called for collaboration with the Sahel and West African countries on information and data sharing for effective border control.

He made the call on Tuesday while addressing newsmen on the sidelines of the Summit on Border Security in London.

“There is a need for collaboration of countries within the Sahel and West African sub-region for better international partnerships and information dissemination.

“We need more data sharing and better collaborations to make sure we don’t just solve the problem but we stop the problem from happening.

“The major takeaway from this summit is proactiveness and not just being reactive as countries are now more poised to criminalising irregular migration.

“So this summit is a wonderful one because it brings an opportunity for ministers in border control to make sure we are all able to manage our borders to secure our countries,” Tunji-Ojo said.

According to him, organised immigration crimes are peculiar to any nation but cut across, hence, the need for collaboration and shared solutions.

“Nigeria has a border control solution because we are not just a destination point. We have automated our solutions as there are more measures in place to ensure the borders are secured and to ensure irregular migration is brought to an end.

“We can’t afford to lose the battle before we start it, and so we know that with this kind of summit, as a united front, we will effectively combat this menace,” Tunji-Ojo assured.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Immigration Service, on Tuesday, announced the arrest of 51 illegal immigrants in Nasarawa State.

According to the NIS, the illegal immigrants, who were apprehended in New Nyanya, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, are all from Mali and are between the ages of 17 and 25.

The NIS Public Relations Officer, A.S. Akinlabi, confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, stating that 11 of them are female, while 40 are male.

He said a preliminary investigation conducted by the service suggests that the migrants may be victims of human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

Akinlabi said, “The Nigeria Immigration Service has arrested 51 illegal immigrants in New Nyanya, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

“The illegal migrants, all Malians aged between 17 and 25, were arrested at their hideouts following credible intelligence. Eleven of them are female, while 40 are male.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that they may have been victims of human trafficking and migrant smuggling. None of them presented any valid travel documents or residence permits during interrogation.”

Akinlabi added that the migrants had been taken into NIS custody and were undergoing further profiling and investigation.

Why the prison break inmates dey stress themselves when they would be recaptured.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into the jailbreak at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State.

The minister described the incident as “unfortunate” and assured Nigerians that all escaped inmates would be recaptured using advanced biometric technology and other security measures.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media, Babatunde Alao, Tunji-Ojo emphasised the government’s determination to uncover the circumstances surrounding the prison break.

He also directed the Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi, to visit the facility and conduct a comprehensive security audit.

“We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation,” the minister stated.

He further assured Nigerians that the authorities would leave no stone unturned in tracking down the fleeing inmates.

“All necessary measures, including our robust biometric database and existing technology solutions, will be deployed to recapture every escaped inmate,” he added.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Tunji-Ojo reiterated his commitment to ensuring accountability within the correctional system.

“The jailbreak at Koton Karfe is unfortunate, but we will get to the root of it. We will not allow breaches like this to go unchecked. Every fugitive will be found and brought to justice,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, the minister assured the public of strengthened security at correctional facilities across the country to prevent future occurrences.

He reaffirmed that the Nigerian Correctional Service would be held accountable for lapses and that corrective measures would be swiftly implemented.

The Koton Karfe jailbreak is the latest in a series of prison security breaches in Nigeria, raising concerns over the safety and management of correctional facilities.

However, Tunji-Ojo maintained that his ministry is committed to enforcing stricter security measures.

The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Engr. Jaji O. Abdulganiyu, MIFireE, MNSE, visited Cedarcrest Hospital, Apo, to commiserate with the victims of the Karu Fire Disaster that occurred on March 19, 2024.

During the visit, he met with the victims and their families, offering his support and well wishes. Dr. Kate Edionbon, the consultant in charge, briefed the CGF on the patients' conditions, confirming that they are responding well to treatment.

Engr. Abdulganiyu expressed his heartfelt concern and wished them a speedy recovery.

The Federal Government has confirmed the recent arrest of two individuals in Abuja and Lagos, both of whom were on Interpol’s red list.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement during the 5th edition of the Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted that these arrests mark a change in the country’s approach to law enforcement and border security.

The minister stressed the importance of securing the nation’s borders, stating, “A secured border is a safe nation. Show me a country that cannot secure its borders, and I will show you a nation that can never be safe.”

The minister also noted that significant improvements have been made in border control, with new posts constructed and officers now stationed to regulate migration.

Additionally, the Nigerian Immigration Service now operates a command and control centre that integrates real-time security data from around the world.

“These arrests demonstrate the results of these efforts,” Tunji-Ojo said. “Just two days ago, someone on the red list of Interpol was apprehended in Abuja. Last week, another individual on the same list was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.”

Tunji-Ojo concluded by emphasising that these developments signal a shift in Nigeria’s security operations, stressing, “It shows that it is not business as usual.”

A Pakistani man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting the administrator of a community WhatsApp group who removed him from the chat, police said Saturday.

Mushtaq Ahmed was shot dead on Thursday evening in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province that borders Afghanistan, which has a history of bloody sectarian violence.

A man named only as Ashfaq has been charged with his murder, according to police documents and a local police official.

Mushtaq allegedly kicked Ashfaq out of the WhatsApp group following an argument, according to a statement by Mushtaq’s brother.

“I did mine, but I don’t want to pay $100 extra for contactless since I stay here in London. I know someone who completed it and got the passport in 5 days.”

“Did mine and got my passport in 2 weeks.”
