Nairaland GeneralNigeria Contactless Passport Launches In The US, Jamaica, Brazil, And Mexico To by Tomson1(op): 4:27pm On Apr 14, 2025
The Nigerian government has expanded its revolutionary contactless passport application system to four new countries; United States, Jamaica, Brazil, and Mexico, marking another bold step forward in service delivery for Nigerians abroad. This phase which was officially launched today, April 14, 2025, the initiative has been widely celebrated online, with the hashtag #ContactlessInUS trending shortly after the announcement.

This milestone reflects the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration remains committed to reforming government processes through innovation, transparency, and people-first policies. It also demonstrates the visionary leadership of the Minister of Interior, Hon. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, whose relentless drive for modernization, alongside the commendable execution by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), continues to reshape how Nigerians at home and abroad, access critical services, setting a new standard for public service delivery.

Nigerians online have been celebrating the development; X user @Lollylarry1 posted: "Good News 1: Contactless passport for Nigerians in JAMAICA kickstarts today, APRIL 14TH, 2025. AVAILABLE ON Google Play. Courtesy of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo."

From Nigeria, @iamjustUstaz shared his excitement: "Hello Nigerians. The new Contactless Biometric Passport Enrolment is by your doorstep for Nigerians in US. JAMAICA & MEXICO are next. Surely, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo is not joking when he said Nigeria shall move forward always."

Another user, @EleSpecial23, acknowledged the scale and impact:"8 countries and still counting. Well done to the team pulling this off, for Nigeria."

Echoing that, @AkindimejiO urged fellow Nigerians to act fast:"The contactless biometric passport is now fully operational in the US, Jamaica, Brazil and Mexico. Nigerians in those countries should take full advantage of this opportunity for their passport renewals."

Meanwhile, @AbuAbdulHameed7 (Prince of Arewa) added a helpful user tip: "Nigerians in USA, Jamaica, Mexico & Brazil should take note, the contactless is only available on Google Playstore, while iOS users will soon be enabled. Those in Canada, UK, Ireland & others are already enjoying the sweet experience."

The process allows Nigerians to apply and complete their biometric captures remotely, skipping in-person visits to embassies. With its success already proven in Canada and the UK, this latest expansion proves Nigeria is forging ahead with citizen-focused reforms.

As the digital horizon expands, Nigeria is proving that distance is no longer a barrier to quality service. The successful rollout of the contactless passport system in the US, Jamaica, Brazil, and Mexico sends a strong signal: Nigeria is not just catching up with global standards, it’s setting them. With visionary leadership at the helm and technology as a trusted partner, the future of public service for Nigerians, wherever they are in the world, is not only promising, it’s already unfolding.

Nairaland GeneralFG To Tighten Border As NIS Arrests 51 Illegal Immigrants by Tomson1(op): 9:38am On Apr 02, 2025
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called for collaboration with the Sahel and West African countries on information and data sharing for effective border control.

He made the call on Tuesday while addressing newsmen on the sidelines of the Summit on Border Security in London.

“There is a need for collaboration of countries within the Sahel and West African sub-region for better international partnerships and information dissemination.

“We need more data sharing and better collaborations to make sure we don’t just solve the problem but we stop the problem from happening.

“The major takeaway from this summit is proactiveness and not just being reactive as countries are now more poised to criminalising irregular migration.

“So this summit is a wonderful one because it brings an opportunity for ministers in border control to make sure we are all able to manage our borders to secure our countries,” Tunji-Ojo said.

According to him, organised immigration crimes are peculiar to any nation but cut across, hence, the need for collaboration and shared solutions.

“Nigeria has a border control solution because we are not just a destination point. We have automated our solutions as there are more measures in place to ensure the borders are secured and to ensure irregular migration is brought to an end.

“We can’t afford to lose the battle before we start it, and so we know that with this kind of summit, as a united front, we will effectively combat this menace,” Tunji-Ojo assured.

NAN reports that the UK summit brought together over 30 global leaders, including UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, and UK Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, to discuss critical issues surrounding border control and organised immigration crime

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Immigration Service, on Tuesday, announced the arrest of 51 illegal immigrants in Nasarawa State.

According to the NIS, the illegal immigrants, who were apprehended in New Nyanya, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, are all from Mali and are between the ages of 17 and 25.

The NIS Public Relations Officer, A.S. Akinlabi, confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, stating that 11 of them are female, while 40 are male.

He said a preliminary investigation conducted by the service suggests that the migrants may be victims of human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

Akinlabi said, “The Nigeria Immigration Service has arrested 51 illegal immigrants in New Nyanya, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

“The illegal migrants, all Malians aged between 17 and 25, were arrested at their hideouts following credible intelligence. Eleven of them are female, while 40 are male.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that they may have been victims of human trafficking and migrant smuggling. None of them presented any valid travel documents or residence permits during interrogation.”

Akinlabi added that the migrants had been taken into NIS custody and were undergoing further profiling and investigation.

Nairaland GeneralInterior Minister Tunji-ojo Probes Kogi Jailbreak by Tomson1(op): 3:11pm On Mar 24, 2025
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into the jailbreak at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State.

The minister described the incident as “unfortunate” and assured Nigerians that all escaped inmates would be recaptured using advanced biometric technology and other security measures.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media, Babatunde Alao, Tunji-Ojo emphasised the government’s determination to uncover the circumstances surrounding the prison break.

He also directed the Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi, to visit the facility and conduct a comprehensive security audit.

“We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation,” the minister stated.

He further assured Nigerians that the authorities would leave no stone unturned in tracking down the fleeing inmates.

“All necessary measures, including our robust biometric database and existing technology solutions, will be deployed to recapture every escaped inmate,” he added.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Tunji-Ojo reiterated his commitment to ensuring accountability within the correctional system.

“The jailbreak at Koton Karfe is unfortunate, but we will get to the root of it. We will not allow breaches like this to go unchecked. Every fugitive will be found and brought to justice,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, the minister assured the public of strengthened security at correctional facilities across the country to prevent future occurrences.

He reaffirmed that the Nigerian Correctional Service would be held accountable for lapses and that corrective measures would be swiftly implemented.

The Koton Karfe jailbreak is the latest in a series of prison security breaches in Nigeria, raising concerns over the safety and management of correctional facilities.

However, Tunji-Ojo maintained that his ministry is committed to enforcing stricter security measures.

Nairaland GeneralFG Confirms Arrest Of Two Interpol’s Suspects In Lagos, Abuja by Tomson1(op): 6:58pm On Mar 20, 2025
The Federal Government has confirmed the recent arrest of two individuals in Abuja and Lagos, both of whom were on Interpol’s red list.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement during the 5th edition of the Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted that these arrests mark a change in the country’s approach to law enforcement and border security.

The minister stressed the importance of securing the nation’s borders, stating, “A secured border is a safe nation. Show me a country that cannot secure its borders, and I will show you a nation that can never be safe.”

The minister also noted that significant improvements have been made in border control, with new posts constructed and officers now stationed to regulate migration.

Additionally, the Nigerian Immigration Service now operates a command and control centre that integrates real-time security data from around the world.

“These arrests demonstrate the results of these efforts,” Tunji-Ojo said. “Just two days ago, someone on the red list of Interpol was apprehended in Abuja. Last week, another individual on the same list was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.”

Tunji-Ojo concluded by emphasising that these developments signal a shift in Nigeria’s security operations, stressing, “It shows that it is not business as usual.”

Nairaland GeneralContactless Passport: Nigerians In Europe And Canada Share Positive Experiences by Tomson1(op): 8:48pm On Mar 05, 2025
The recent improvements in Nigeria’s passport application and collection process have sparked widespread praise from Nigerians residing in Europe and Canada.

Many have taken to social media to share their seamless experiences, applauding the efficiency of the new system under the leadership of Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior.

These achievements also reflect the renewed commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensuring that government services become more efficient, transparent, and accessible to all Nigerians, both at home and abroad.

With the introduction of a more streamlined and contactless passport issuance process, applicants are now experiencing significantly reduced wait times and hassle-free collections. Social media testimonials highlight the effectiveness of the system, with many users expressing their surprise at how quickly they received their passports.

One of the most common praises revolves around the speed of processing and delivery. A user on X (formerly Twitter), @RexChibuzo_, shared his remarkable experience:
“Mine almost got to my city before my train reached my city. Lol. Went to London in the Morning, finished and took train back, passport got to my local post office by evening same day.”

Similarly, another user, @Odogwu, praised the Nigerian Immigration Service for its improved efficiency. He recounted how he completed his biometrics on a Monday, and by Tuesday, his passport was already delivered to Aberdeen. Due to his absence, the courier service attempted delivery twice before he successfully received it the following morning. He wrote:
“Kudos to Nigeria Immigration Service. Did my biometrics on Monday and on Tuesday, passport was delivered to Aberdeen. I was still in London and they tried to deliver twice. Finally got it redelivered this morning.”

These testimonies highlight the drastic reduction in wait times, making passport renewal and collection more convenient for Nigerians abroad.
The efficiency of the process has been noted in various locations, including the UK, Canada, and Europe.

A user from Ottawa, Canada, @mujibeth, expressed her delight at the swift process:
“ Yes @BTOofficial is doing well. I received my passport from Ottawa 7 days after capture for a renewal. I was already preparing to plead on Twitter for a faster response but was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency. Thank you Hon Minister for the improved process!"

Likewise, @AdetonaNu shared how he sent his expired passport to the High Commission in London on the 18th and received his new passport just three days later via Royal Mail. In his word, “ I used contactless, and I got my passport within 3 days.”

Additionally, more Nigerians in the UK have confirmed the system’s efficiency. Kyrian Eledom (@Kyriwowo89) shared his experience, saying:
“I did mine, but I don’t want to pay $100 extra for contactless since I stay here in London. I know someone who completed it and got the passport in 5 days.”

Similarly, another applicant, Onyebuchi (@onyebuchind), stated:
“Did mine and got my passport in 2 weeks.”

Adding to these positive reviews, another X user, @Hannahetta1, shared her experience, highlighting the smooth process:
“I got mine a month after applying at the immigration.”

The testimonies pouring in from different parts of the world show that the reforms in Nigeria’s passport processing system have significantly improved the experience for applicants. With reduced waiting periods, seamless digital applications, and efficient home deliveries, the frustration of long processing times is gradually becoming a thing of the past.

These advancements mark a major leap in service delivery by the Nigerian Immigration Service, ensuring that Nigerians abroad can access essential travel documents without unnecessary delays. The remarkable success of this initiative further underscores President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which continues to drive innovative reforms in governance, placing citizen welfare and efficient service delivery at the forefront.
