Nairaland / General / CPC Orders MTN To Pay N1.85m To Customer Over Flawed Promo by Topam: 8:23am On Feb 11, 2016
Nigeria’s telecommunications giant MTN, again earned itself another controversy yesterday as the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has directed it to pay one million, eight hundred and fifty Naira (N1,850,000) to one of the winners of its Ultimate Wonder Promo for lack of due diligence.
CPC’s order was sequel to a complaint brought by Mr. Omeje Chukwuma Fidelis, against the telecommunications firm to the effect that he was underpaid after being declared winner of N2 million in the said sales promotion, held in 2012.
According to Omeje, he participated in the promo and was called through MTN line 180 on October 10, 2012 that he had won N2million in the Ultimate Wonder Promo and that on October 12 of the same year he got a text message informing him of the presentation ceremony fixed for October 19 at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja.
The complainant asserted that during the said ceremony, he was presented with a dummy cheque of N2million with his name on it, interviewed and paraded before the media and the world as a winner of the said amount.
He recounted further that he was stunned to receive another call from MTN line 180 on November 2, 2012 that his winning was N150,000 and was thereafter given a Verve ATM card for that amount.
MTN, in its response to the Council’s intervention, denied the claim of Omeje, saying that he was from the on-set informed that his winning was N150,000 and that the complainant deceitfully presented himself when winners in the N2million category were called forward on the day of the prize presentation.
The company stated further that Omeje’s antics was discovered at the verification of winners, which was done after the ceremony and he was thereafter contacted through its 180 line on his misrepresentation pursuant to which he apologised.
CPC demanded for the call data of the communications of October 10, 2012 when Omeje was informed of his winnings of N150,000, but MTN failed, refused and neglected to comply with the request made both in 2012 and 2016

Politics / Looted Funds:No Form Of Plea Bargain Or Political Settlement – Ortom by Topam: 8:46am On Feb 10, 2016
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has promised to perform wonders in the state when funds stolen during the past administration are returned.
A commission of inquiry set up by the state government had unmasked looted funds to the tune of about N219 billion and the Governor believes that the recovery of such funds is the antidote to the financial problems that have plagued the state in recent times.
“If I have N219 billion, I will do wonders for this state. N219 billion is a lot of money. Let them bring back this money and even the other N802 billion we are talking about, even that one there are issues there.
“We want to pay salaries, we want to pay pensioners their money, we want to pay gratuity, and we want to fulfill our contractual obligations, including the ones that we inherited.
“With N219 billion, it is enough to settle all these problems and challenges. Nobody will hear about bailout again. I can even take from there and refund to the federal government the money they gave me as bailout.
“We need rural roads, we need electricity, we need our hospitals to work, we need our schools to work, so we must recover it by the grace of God.” he said.
Governor reiterated that there will be no form of plea bargain or political settlement, saying all stakeholders in the state where unanimous about the refund of looted funds, kobo for kobo.
“There is no political settlement on this matter of our commonwealth. I invited stakeholders the other last year and the entire stakeholders were unanimous. This was a non-partisan stakeholders’ meeting and all of them were unanimous that refunds must be made for our commonwealth. So, no settlement; there is nothing like settlement.
“If you can make refunds, I have no case against you. If you said you took N10 billion and you refund that N10 billion, I will tell you to go and sin no more, but where you cannot, that is where I will have problems with you.” he insisted.

Politics / CCT: Saraki Won’t Resign Until Proven Guilty – Ndume by Topam: 7:57am On Feb 10, 2016
Senate President Bukola Saraki would not resign until proven guilty of the alleged false assets’ declaration being prosecuted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Senate Leader Mohammed Ali Ndume has said.
Ndume said this yesterday while fielding questions from State House correspondents after leading a Senate delegation on a consultation visit to the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
On the delegation were Senators Abdullahi Adamu and Dino Melaye. later, Ndume said.
On the calls for Saraki’s resignation, the Senate leader said: “Are you saying that the Senate President should be convicted before the trial? In our Constitution, you are considered innocent until proven guilty.”
Ndume said the Senate would be paying more regular consultation visits to the Presidency.
He said the Senate delegation was in the Villa because this was the first time the incumbent administration was having an acting president. Osinbajo has been acting as president since President Muhammadu Buhari embarked on a five-day vacation last Friday.
“This government is our government. I am the Senate Leader in this government. So, my coming here today [yesterday] is not supposed to be a new thing. My coming here should even be more regular,” he said.
“You should expect me to be coming here. Now, we have the budget as work in progress. We have the new Money Laundering Bill before the Senate. We have many things we are looking at. We have come to come and consult on these,” Ndume said

Culture / Yoruba Obas: I Stand By My Ranking — Alake by Topam: 7:35am On Feb 10, 2016
The Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo has maintained his stand on the ranking of Yoruba Obas, pledging to release evidence to back his claims.
The Alake who spoke through his Special Adviser on media Affairs, Chief Lai Labode said he does not want to engage in controversy with anyone.
The Paramount ruler had on Saturday stirred the hornet’s nest, declaring that the Ooni of Ife remained the highest in the ranking of Yoruba Obas.
The Alake who also identified ego as the cause of disunity among traditional rulers and people of Yoruba extraction, said the Ife monarch is the highest of the five principal Obas in Yorubaland.
Oba Gbadebo said this while receiving the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi in his Ake, Abeokuta, Ogun State palace.

The Alake who had listed the other Obas below the Ooni to include the Alaafin of Oyo and the Oba of Benin coming second and third, respectively, in that order.
He also listed his own title, the Alake of Egbaland as the fourth while the Awujale of Ijebuland occupies the lowest rung of ladder.
The Alake said, “Ooni is one of the five principal Obas in Yorubaland. The others are in order of the way they are classified on supremacy basis. After the Ooni is the Alaafin. After the Alaafin, the Oba of Benin. After the Oba of Benin, it comes to the Alake of Egbaland and the fifth and by no means the last or the least, the Awujale of Ijebuland.’’

Although, the paramount ruler was said to be unavailable to clear some issues relating to his claim, his aide disclosed that the monarch had sent an evidence to support his claim through his private secretary who was not available as at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the Awujale and Paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona could not be reached as his Personal Assistant, simply identified as Toyin requested for a letter of interview before Awujale before he could talk to the press.
The Awujale aide said the monarch was ready to speak with media provided that a letter of request for interview is sent to him.

Ooni not in supremacy battle with anyone

Meantime, as the controversy over the ranking of traditional rulers in Yorubaland continued yesterday as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi said he would not want to be drawn into supremacy battle with any traditional ruler in the country.
Oba Ogunwusi reiterated his desire for a more united Yoruba race and peaceful Nigeria.
The Esogban of Benin and Odionwere of the kingdom (Traditional Head), Chief David Edebiri had on Monday said the Alake of Egba land, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo goofed when he said the Oba of Benin was third in the hierarchy of Obas.
He explained that the Ooni of Ife was a son of the Oba of Benin, adding that the stool of the Oba of Benin could not be compared with that of any Yoruba king.
But when contacted to comment on the statement credited to the palace of Oba of Benin, the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace Moses Olafare said the only thing that was paramount to Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi now remains the need to foster unity and healthy development among the Yorubas and the entire nation.

His words: “Let me emphasize for the umpteen time that kabiyesi Ooni is less concerned over any supremacy hullabaloo, he’s only interest for now on the sacred throne of Oduduwa is to explore measures through which the collective interest and genuine unity among Yoruba and other tribes within the larger House of Oduduwa can be enhanced.

“This informed his resolve to build bridges of harmony among Yourba Obas. I am resolutely committed to how Yoruba ethnic group can restore its glory and pride position among other ethnic inclinations in Nigeria and don’t want to be dragged into supremacy contest or join issues with anybody.”

Religion / Catholic Bishop Slams Igbo Over ‘unbridled’ Quest For Money by Topam: 7:29am On Feb 10, 2016
The unbridled quest for money and the attitude of “only money counts” in all Igbo affairs, came under severe attack, yesterday, when the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka, Most Rev. Professor Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, delivered the 33rd Public Lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, titled “Intellectualism and the Development of a People.”
According to the fiery Catholic cleric, the toll Igbo people have paid in values for this, has been enormous, adding that money and what money can buy seem to be all that matter to Ndigbo.
“Even our proverbial egalitarianism and republicanism seem to have disappeared as the super rich became the owners of the community and their praise singers remind those who were in doubt that the community or town, indeed belong to some people”, Professor Onah lamented
.
Tracing how the Igbo degenerated to the present level, the Bishop said that before the Nigeria-Biafra war, the intellectual was the pride of the Igboman, pointing out that it was a pride to be referred to as doctor’s mother or father.
“Then came the war, the blockade, the starvation, the surrender, the humiliation and the economic emasculation. Despite the beautiful slogan of no victor, no vanquished, there was and still is, a clear plan to crush the presumably rebellious Igbo spirit and, thus, shatter the myth of the resilient Igboman”, Onah said.
Continuing, the erudite cleric recalled that at the end of the war, the foremost battle of Ndigbo was for survival in a Nigeria that neither wanted them in its fold nor would let them go, “having been stripped to the bare skin of all the material wealth they had acquired before the war by the post war Nigerian government”.
According to the cleric, a careful scrutiny of the way most political office holders were selected in Igboland and what they do with the common patrimony when they are in office, will confirm that Ndigbo have collectively sold their birthrights to those who have the hard currency to spray.
“Before long, the only money counts attitude found its way into the precincts of the churches and, through harvests, bazaars and the unending fund raising programmes for the innumerable church projects, it gradually moved into the sanctuary”, Onah said.
The Bishop also reasoned that from the sanctuaries, the money virus exploded like a petrol tank on fire, spilling it’s content into massive open air rallies, crusades and fanfares of the miracle industries and mega markets, where the insecure wealthy class, the distressed youths and miserable victims of the reckless pillage of our national wealth by an unscrupulous political class collectively fund the extravagance of some self appointed redeemers.

Two Nigerians, Ojukwu Nnamdi Roland and Ngene Linus Chibuike, arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos while attempting to smuggled $5, 424,270 USD out of the country, have been convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment, respectively by Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

Contrary to the requirements of the law, Rowland did not allegedly declare the money to men and officers of the Nigeria Customs Service and was subsequently arrested and arraigned before Justice Buba.

He also ordered that the convict should forfeit the entire sum of $2,917,272 USD (Two Million, Nine Hundred and Seventeen Thousand, Two Hundred and Seventy Two United States Dollars) to the Federal government.
Justice Buba said that the convict did not do the right thing by failing to declare the money to Customs officials.
He ruled that the two years imprisonment should take effect from 9 February, 2016.
