President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his unflinching support for the Super Eagles of Nigeria. This is coming after Nigeria maintained theior 100 percent record at the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Nigeria have won three out of their three Group D games and advanced to the next round of the tournament. The latest was a 2-0 win over Equitorial-Guinea. “Congratulations to our Super Eagles on winning all their three games and advancing to the second round of the AFCON in grand style. I urge them to maintain and even surpass the terrific form that has made them leaders in the group stage, and to remain good ambassadors of Nigeria on and off the field,” the President wrote on his Facebook page. Congratulating Austin Eguavoen’s men, Buhari urged them to win all the games in Cameroon to bring home their AFCON trophy. “The entire country looks forward with hope to a total of SEVEN emphatic wins in this competition. Three down, four to go! “They are assured of my unflinching support as they soar like the Eagles that they are to write yet another brilliant chapter in the unfolding story of Nigerian football.” https://newsroundtheclock.com/afcon-2022-buhari-urges-super-eagles-to-win-all-games-in-cameroon/

Veteran Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, has called for guns to be legalized in Nigeria tigeria to deal with pedophiles who molest children. The popular Yoruba actress made her views known while reacting to a video posted by comedienne, Princess, on her Instagram page following the alleged molestation of her foster daughter by Yoruba actor Baba Ijesha. Alongside the video, Princess had written: “Abuse of minors have become the new trend in Nigeria and only a few people are speaking up. Even in the animal kingdom, it’s not this bad. Our society stigmatizes, even threatening victims and their parents, while the perpetrators like Baba Ijesha walk freely. “Our children are being destroyed daily and most people see it as cruise.” While commenting on the video, Iyabo Ojo, a mother of two, made it clear that anyone who messes with her children will be dealt with. “Can they just legalise guns because some demons need to be taken out as soon as possible. “F**k with my kids and you’re so f**ked,” Iyabo Ojo added. https://newsroundtheclock.com/nollywood-actress-iyabo-ojo-wants-guns-legalized-in-nigeria/ |
The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has given reasons why the Federal Government will continue to rely on external loans to address the country’s infrastructural deficit. Lawan, who addressed Senators in his welcome address on the first plenary session of the year on Tuesday at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, expressed concerns that the funding of the 2022 Budget was predicated on significant borrowing. “Our country is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. We have to construct and provide infrastructure, in all parts of our country because infrastructure is needed for our nation to develop. “However, we do not generate enough revenues to fund the provision of such infrastructure. Until more revenues are generated, the country has to borrow and also resort to other sources of funding our infrastructural development. But we cannot continue to borrow endlessly. “It is imperative that we need to improve on the revenue to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio. At about 8 percent Revenue to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio, our country is basically at 50 percent of what is required of the revenue to GDP of 15% for it to support any significant economic development.” The Senate President, however, assured that the upper legislative chamber would collaborate with revenue-generating agencies in order to reduce borrowings for critical projects in the country. “The Senate will develop a strategy of engagement with revenue-generating agencies on how to make them achieve their targets and generate more revenues in 2022. “The Senate will ensure that we boost their revenue-generating drive with a view to reducing borrowing for the development of our much-needed infrastructure. This is a major challenge for our development and we need to treat as such.” https://newsroundtheclock.com/senate-president/ |

The death of Chief Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan, who headed the Interim National Government (ING), that succeeded the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida, on Tuesday, January 11, at the age of 85, effectively ends another era of great nationalists who fought for the existence of Nigeria during the dark years of military dictatorship. Shonekan who was the Abese of Egbaland, a traditional title conferred on him by his community in Ogun State in 1981, was born on May 9, 1936. He was a British-trained lawyer, businessman, politician, astute administrator and statesman who was installed the interim Head of State of Nigeria from August 26, 1993, before he was removed in November 17, 1993, by the late Gen. Sani Abacha, which made him the 9th Head of State of Nigeria. Before he was made the interim head of state, Shonekan was the chairman and Chief Executive Officer the United African Company of Nigeria (UAC), which was unarguably the largest conglomerate in Sub-Saharan Africa. Shonekan, though from Abeokuta in Ogun State, was born in Lagos, in a family of six. He had his early education at the CMS Grammar School and Igbobi College. He obtained a degree in law from the University of London, and later attended the Harvard Business School. Shonekan joined the United Africa Company of Nigeria in 1964 and rose through the ranks to become the MD/CEO. At the age of 40, Shonekan was one of the youngest members of the board of directors of UAC having risen to the rank of deputy legal adviser. He was made Chairman and Managing Director in 1980, and went on to cultivate a wide array of international business and political connections, before eventually making a foray into the world of politics. Following a crisis that rocked Nigeria with the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Shonekan was installed by IBB as the interim head of state and assumed office as both the head of transitional council and head of government. As the head of the transitional council, he was to design a roadmap for a scheduled hand over to an elected democratic leader of a Third Nigerian Republic. However, in August 1993, Babangida resigned from office, but signed a decree establishing the Interim National Government and swore in Shonekan as the interim head of state. In his short stint as the interim leader, Shonekan faced a serious political crisis which ensued following the election annulment, with the perceived winner of the election, MKO Abiola, mounting pressure on Shonekan to recognise him as president, often describing the Interim National Government as illegitimate. Shonekan tried to schedule another presidential election and a return to democratic rule, but his efforts were thwarted by national strikes and opposition coming from the Abiola camp. Shonekan however, scored some points by releasing political prisoners detained by Babangida and introducing a bill to repeal three major draconian decrees of the military government. He also lobbied for Nigeria’s foreign debts to be cancelled after most European countries had imposed economic sanctions on Nigeria following the June 12 debacle. Another milestone in Shonekan’s short stint as head of state was initiating the audit of the accounts of the NNPC. He also set a timetable for Nigerian troops withdrawal from ECOMOG’s peacekeeping mission in Liberia, something the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army and in particular, Abacha, who was the Minister of Defence and Chief of Defence Staff frowned at and argued that Shonekan had no right to meddle into. Three months into his administration, in November 1993, Shonekan was overthrown by Abacha in what many have come to describe as a palace coup. In 1994, Shonekan founded the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, an advocacy group and think-tank for private sector-led development of the Nigerian economy. As an elder statesman, Shonekan featured prominently on national issues in advisory role and at the time of his death, he was the third oldest surviving Nigerian Head of State after Queen Elizabeth II and General Yakubu Gowon. https://newsroundtheclock.com/what-to-know-about-late-ernest-shonekan-head-of-interim-national-government/ |

The 2022 African Nations Cup (AFCON 2022) is finally here, and 16 teams will fight for the top prize in Cameroon. What comes to mind are the chances of each team to winning the trophy. Afterwards, comes the favourite tag of the ones that could emerge champions. Fortunately, Nigeria always fall into this category. The reason is not far-fetched- the Super Eagles have pool of talents. It is no longer news that they will be in Cameroon without Leon Balogun, Victor Osimhen and in-form Dennis Bonaventure. These three are no doubt in their prime and could have added a lot of bite to the team, especially in the attacking department. In the defense department, we can still rely on Kenneth Omeruo who is not a stranger to Troost-Ekong, having partnered with him at the last edition. But what surprises Nigerians is the excuse of the same Watford that released William Troost-Ekong and failed to release Dennis. There will be another day to criticise the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for not doing the needful. No doubt, the English club is in a relegation battle and won’t want to lose an important player at this moment, but not giving Nigeria the due respect is unacceptable. On the part of Osimhen who personally seek exclusion, it is reasonable for a player who almost lost his eye and needs his recovery. It won’t be surprising to see him back in action for Napoli while the AFCON is ongoing. And thus, he just got injured in the Serie A clash played today agunst Sampdoria, having recovered from COVID-19. The Super Eagles would have been compensated with the return of Odion Ighalo, but his non-release by his club means that Nigeria would Sadiq Umar, who plies his trade in Spain with Almeria. We can also be happy with the inclusion of Kelechi Iheanacho. Who are in the Nigeria’s 28-man squad for AFCON 2022 Goalkeepers: Francis Uzoho (AC Omonia, Cyprus); John Noble (Enyimba FC); Daniel Akpeyi (Kaizer Chiefs, South Africa); Maduka Okoye (Sparta Rotterdam, The Netherlands) Defenders: Chidozie Awaziem (Alanyaspor FC, Turkey); Kenneth Omeruo (CD Leganes, Spain); William Ekong (Watford FC, England); Olaoluwa Aina (Torino FC, Italy); Jamilu Collins (SC Paderborn 07, Germany); Tyrone Ebuehi (Venezia, Italy), Zaidu Sanusi (FC Porto, Portugal); Olisa Ndah (Orlando Pirates, South Africa) Midfielders: Frank Onyeka (Brentford FC, England); Joseph Ayodele-Aribo (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland); Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City, England); Chidera Ejuke (CSKA Moscow, Russia); Kelechi Nwakali (SD Huesca, Spain) Forwards: Ahmed Musa (Fatih Karagumruk, Turkey); Samuel Chukwueze (Villarreal FC, Spain); Moses Simon (FC Nantes, France); Sadiq Umar (UD Almeria, Spain); Taiwo Awoniyi (Union Berlin, Germany); Alex Iwobi (Everton FC, England); Peter Olayinka 9Sparta Prague, Czech Republic); Henry Onyekuru (Galatasaray, Turkey); Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City, England); Emmanuel Dennis (Watford FC, England) This 28-man squad has what it takes to win the trophy. It is the Super Eagles alone that can stop themselves. It is high time we take our chances and the defense should not be caught napping. The AFCON has provided Nigeria with another opportunity to add to win and be the giant of Africa it is known for. Thus, the first test against Egypt will go a long way to reveal what this youthful side can achieve at the Mundial. https://newsroundtheclock.com/afcon-2022-nigeria-and-nother-opportunity/ |
