Politics / Alhaji AAK Adeyemo: A Leader And Politician Par Excellence by topkom: 8:02am On Mar 15, 2022
On this day, and exactly two decades ago; a colossus departed this world after blazing different trails within the annals of Nigeria’s political history.

There will never be another Alhaji Abdul Azeez Kolawole Adeyemo, popularly known as ‘Alhaji how are you‘. Selfless, empathetic and his visionary leadership is something Nigeria is currently bereft of. Attributes and qualities that Alhaji Adeyemo has in abundance.

Background of Abdul Azeez Kolawole Adeyemo

A clergy, a painter, a business man, an orator and a grass roots leader who cares deeply about the well being and welfare of others which birth his nickname ‘Alhaji how are you’.

Despite his public figure status, Alhaji Adeyemo has an open door policy to his constituents regardless of their social status. For example, during Alhaji’s lifetime he would often be seen playing board games like Ayo Opon and Drafts in places other politicians of his calibre would consider as no go areas.

Alhaji Abdul Azeez Kolawole Adeyemo – 1941 – 2002

He was born on the 14th of June 1941 in Ado-Ekiti the Ekiti State capital to Sir. Rufai Adeyemo & Princess Adebolarin Agunsoye. His ravenous thirst for knowledge led to his reversion to Islam from Catholicism. This trait imbibed a sense of fairness and justice in the late Alhaji Adeyemo. Who became a politician early in his career, joining the Western region campaign of Egbe Omo Oduduwa; founded by Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. He was also a frontline member of the Action Group which later metamorphosed into the Unity Party of Nigeria.

Political Life of Abdul Azeez Kolawole Adeyemo
The late Alhaji Adeyemo played a huge role in the agitation for return to democracy in the truncated third republic; which witnessed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections, by former military head of state, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. In an election adjudged by international observers, to be the freest in the nation’s history and was won by the late MKO Abiola.

Abdul Azeez Kolawole Adeyemo’s sojourn into politics began when he was first elected as a councillor in the Ekiti Central Local Government of the old Ondo State, between 1976 and 1978. In the second republic, he was elected as an honourable member of the Ondo State House of Assembly between 1979 – 1983.

He also played a significant role as campaign manager in the victory of the short-lived government of Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua who was the Governor of old Ondo State, from 1991 to 1993 under the umbrella of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He was later appointed as the Ondo state Parliamentary Coordinator and Liaison officer by Governor Bamidele Olumilua.

Abdul Azeez Kolawole Adeyemo – The Elder Statesman

In the fourth republic, Alhaji Adeyemo teamed up with the likes of Chiefs; Bola Ige, Abraham Adesanya, Olu Falae, Adebayo Adefarati, Ayo Fasanmi, Ganiyu Dawodu and the rest to form the Alliance for Democracy. Which later became the dominant party in the southwest geopolitical region. He also played a vital role in the creation of Ekiti State in 1996.

Alhaji AAK Adeyemo with Engineer Falade (Falcon) and Chief Afe Babalola
He later assumed the status of a ‘Godfather’ owing to his sphere of influence across the political spectrum which culminated in the victory of Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo who was appointed as the first Governor-elect of Ekiti State in 1999 under the platform of the Alliance for Democracy. He was also a pioneer leader of the PAN Yoruba Elders Consultative Forum, popularly known as ‘Afenifere’.

Honouring The Legacy of Abdul Azeez Kolawole Adeyemo

Alhaji Adeyemo’s death, at the age of 61, in 2002, was as unexpected as any fearsome speech he ever delivered. But beneath that veneer was a very reflective man, whose love for his family, and passion for the community supersedes any aspiration. He was a well-admired and revered man, who for all his unique gifts continued to care for his community and countrymen till he drew his last breath.

A special television programme titled: ‘The life and times of Alhaji Adeyemo’ is scheduled to be aired live on Saturday 12th of March 2022, on Ekiti State Television (EKTv), at 5pm Nigerian time which would also be streamed live on EKTv Facebook page.

Even though, Alhaji Adeyemo departed this world twenty years ago. His memory remains fresh and green, while his legacies will live on forever. The general consensus amongst those of us that he left behind remains that; no, there will never be another Alhaji Adeyemo. One was quite extraordinary enough.

May his gentle soul continue to rest in peace and may Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings.

Foreign Affairs / Chelsea Owner Roman Abramovich Sanctioned By UK Government by topkom: 1:33pm On Mar 10, 2022
Chelsea football club owner, Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK government for his links to the Kremlin.

Abramovich has been trying to sell Chelsea FC since the invasion of Ukraine last month.

He is among seven of Russia’s wealthiest and most influential oligarchs sanctioned by the UK government, in an attempt to punish the allies of Russian president, Vladimir Putin over the invasion of Ukraine.

Roman Abramovich was found by the UK government to have “received preferential treatment and concessions” from the Kremlin and through his business links been “involved in destabilising Ukraine and undermining and threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence” of the eastern European country.

Boris Johnson said the move was a demonstration of the UK’s “unwavering support for the Ukrainian people”. The prime minister added that; “We will be ruthless in pursuing those who enable the killing of civilians, destruction of hospitals, and illegal occupation of sovereign allies.”

The sanctions on Abramovich will surely have some repercussions for Chelsea Football Club.

The culture secretary – Nadine Dorries confirmed that a special licence has been issued, to allow games to be played, staff to be paid, and for existing ticket holders to attend matches. In order to deprive Abramovich of benefiting from his ownership of the club.

“I know this brings some uncertainty, but the government will work with the league and clubs, to keep football being played while ensuring sanctions hit those intended,” she added.

Politics / Umahi Apologises To Justice Ekwo Over Attack Following Ruling On Election by topkom: 7:39pm On Mar 09, 2022
The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi on Wednesday, apologised for comments made against a judge of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Justice Inyang Ekwo and tendered an apology to the Nigeria Barr Association, NBA.

Umahi apologised while addressing over two thousand members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ebonyi State at a solidarity rally that took place at the Udensi roundabout, staged to declare their support and loyalty to the governor.

He said that he has mobilized over seventeen (17) SANs to Appeal the judgement of the Federal High court sitting in Abuja led by justice Inyang Ekwo, wherein he was sacked for defecting from the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the ruling APC.

Umahi said he has no regrets in defecting to the ruling APC and threatened to engage in battle with the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ebonyi State, especially for trying to distract his administration.
“I’m still the Governor of Ebonyi State and I’m still working. I said the lawyers of PDP are the ones doing forum shopping and I’m going to write against the lawyers to NBA to discipline them because the judge was misled. The blame was not on the judge. The blame is on the PDP lawyers who misled the judge.

“And I’m using the opportunity to let Nigerians know that nobody castigated the judge and we will not and because the matter was not before any judge.

“Today, we have appealed the judgement. We have done three things; we have done the appeal at Enugu, and when I say that, we have two judgements, I say that the judgement in Ebonyi state, which has equal powers with that of Abuja. We said we will obey the judgement in Ebonyi State. We will appeal the judgement of Abuja. We didn’t say we will disobey otherwise we would have not appealed.

“We are before the Appeal of Enugu state and that of Abuja. We have also filed a stay of execution. So, we are still the Governor and Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State” he stated.

Politics / Lai: Information Minister Reveals Fg’s Plan To Curb Ritual Killings by topkom: 2:20pm On Feb 22, 2022
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says it plans to inaugurate a national sensitisation campaign against ritual murders soon.

Lai Mohammed said this on Monday in Abuja when he paid official visit to the headquarters of Daily Trust Newspaper.

According to him, the government is concerned over the rising cases of ritual murders by unscrupulous people, most of them very young, who are seeking to get rich at all cost.

“For those who may still be in doubt, ritual killings have assumed a worrisome dimension in recent years.

According to an NGO, Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), 150 women and girls have been killed for ritual purposes between Jan. 2018 and Dec. 2021.

“Recently, in Ogun State, four young men, one of whom is 18 years old, murdered their 20-year-old female friend for money rituals.

“One of them said they learnt about using human parts for money rituals from social media.

“Of course, you are also aware of a case involving a female student of the University of Jos who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend for ritual purposes,’’ he said.

In raising national awareness on the scourge, Lai said the National Orientation Agency (NOA), was already partnering with religious and traditional organisations as well as Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
He said the body would forge behavioural change, especially among the youth, some of whom were afflicted by the get-rich-quick syndrome.

The minister noted that some had blamed Nollywood for the scourge for featuring money rituals in some of its movies which negatively influenced the vulnerable youth.

To mitigate this, Lai said he had directed the National Film and Video Censors Board to take the issue into consideration while performing its role of censoring and classifying films and videos.

The minister said he also directed the board to engage with stakeholders in the film industry in order to express the concerns of the government and Nigerians on the need to eschew money ritual content in their movies.

He appealed to religious, traditional and political leaders to be part of efforts to re-orientate the youth in particular, to realize that success comes through hard work, not money rituals.

Politics / Wike Accuses Dokpesi Of Sabotaging Pdp’s Chances Ahead Of 2023 Election by topkom: 7:48pm On Feb 18, 2022
Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike has accused a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Raymond Dokpesi of sabotaging the party’s chances ahead of the 2023 elections.

Wike made this allegation on Thursday during a meeting with stakeholders in Port Harcourt, noting that some PDP Governors have been inundated with calls following a text message being peddled by Chief Dokpesi that some governors had embarked on a weeklong trip to Europe to determine those who will be the presidential and vice presidential candidates of the party in 2023.

“I have always said to people in PDP, nobody should cause a division among the governors. We are trying as much as we can to build the party back and see that in 2023 PDP takes over governance. But, I have some suspicion that people like Raymond Dokpesi are not really sincere to the Peoples Democratic Party and I think , I’m convinced that Raymond Dokpesi appears to be working for APC.

“I don’t understand where Raymond Dokpesi gets this information, this rumour that governors travelled to Europe to decide who will be the presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate of PDP. I wonder why governors will travel to Europe to take such a decision,” Wike said.

The governor said while he and his colleagues don’t have anything against Chief Raymond Dokpesi campaigning for the 2019 PDP presidential candidate and former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, he should be circumspect and desist from causing mayhem in the party.
“I’ve told Raymond Dokpesi that there is nothing wrong with you preaching for the candidature of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Waziri of Adamawa , a very experienced man, an intelligent man, a strategist. But don’t destroy other people because of this. Because when you destroy them it will be difficult for PDP to win election in 2023.”

Wike implored Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who he described as a well known political strategist to rein in Chief Dokpesi from spreading dangerous rumours capable to polarising stakeholders in the party.

Governor Wike noted that in 2019, PDP governors, without the prompting of Dokpesi rallied round Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and will do so again if he picks the party’s presidential ticket.

“We supported Atiku Abubakar when he won (PDP presidential ticket), and even if he wins now, the governors will rally round him, but when you destroy the governors and bring confusion, how will it work.”

The governor advised all those who love the PDP and are desirous it wins the 2023 general elections to desist from spreading harmful and baseless information intended to cause strife and mistrust.

Former beauty queen, Precious Chikwendu has recounted how she was physically assaulted by her estranged husband, Femi Fani-Kayode four months after she gave birth to her first son, Aragon Femi-Kayode.

In an Instagram post written to celebrate her first son, Aragon who turns a year older today, Tuesday, February 1, the mother of four levelled more accusations against the former Aviation Minister.

“What haven’t we weathered together? You witnessed so many in my womb and when you arrived this world, you were barely four months old when you witnessed your mother being beaten like a puppy,” part of her post read.

“You were in my arms that night at the wheatbaker hotel after he was released from ikoyi prison, it was all laughter at first then prayers of Thanksgiving and next punches.”

Precious Chikwendu continued:

“You were dragged from my arms like a little bag of cake and I held on so tightly, the look in your eyes was that of so much fear , I looked into your eyes and I could read you clearly it was more of “Never Let Me Go mum” .

So I held on to you, the more I held on to you the more the punches came . You cried out loudly and my heart shredded the more as the splashes of blood gushing from my nose landed on you. You were so terrified and all I wanted to do was get you out of that scene.

I was able to get off with you and ran to the short stay apartment where Chidera and others were before you slept off on my chest after crying for so long.”

Politics / Atiku Refuses To State Timeline Over Intent To Run For 2023 Presidency by topkom: 10:50am On Feb 02, 2022
Despite a plethora of politicians declaring their intention to contest for the 2023 Presidency, a former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar has remained non-committal over his ambition.

According to Atiku, he will issue a public statement about his ambition “at the appropriate time”; while speaking to pressmen on Tuesday, February 1, after a visit to a former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, retd.

NRTC had gathered that the meeting lasted for about an hour and was held behind closed doors.

This is the latest in a series of visits and consultations to Babangida; after the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu paid an earlier visit to the former General.

On the purpose of his visit, Atiku clarified that he came on a courtesy visit to the State Governor Abubakar Bello over the incessant terrorism bedevilling the state.

“I only came on a courtesy visit to the governor and to commiserate with him and people of the state over the incessant banditry in Niger state; just discussed with the governor on the insecurity in the state and from what I heard; it is a very serious and pathetic situation and it is most unfortunate.

“I have only come on a visit; I will let you know about my presidential ambition at the appropriate time,” Atiku said.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has debunked insinuations about him being the running mate to Atiku in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to the governor, no such agreement has been reached between him and any politician.

“Please discountenance anything you’re seeing about being VP to this and that. Discountenance all those social media talk,” he said on Tuesday at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The meeting had in attendance, party executives, national and state assembly members, LG chairmen, cabinet members; and other high-ranking members of the party.

The Governor’s comments also come a day after it had been reported on some platforms; that Atiku was planning to pick him as a running mate ahead of the 2023 elections.

But according to Wike, members of the party in the southern region will speak in one voice; and at the appropriate time, about their decision on the forthcoming election.

Politics / IPOB Tells Asari Dokubo To Mind His Utterances Against Kanu by topkom: 1:19pm On Jan 29, 2022
The outlawed Igbo separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has warned former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, to mind his utterances and comments against their incarcerated leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The group said recent disparaging comments credited to the founder of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force against Kanu and the Biafra cause, was quite unfortunate, coming from a self-acclaimed freedom fighter.

IPOB also cautioned Dokubo to mind what he says as he is neither a member of IPOB nor a Biafran.

In the past few weeks, Asari Dokubo has been in the forefront of those urging the Federal Government not to release Kanu, claiming that the Biafra agitator had been instigating violence and killings in the Southeast.

But in a statement issued by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary on Friday, the group denied declaring war on Dokubo as he has been claiming and would be held responsible if any IPOB member dies in the coastal areas or hinterlands.

“We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to put the whole world on notice, particularly the Izon people, of the unguarded and nonsense statements coming out from Asari Dokubo against the people of IPOB and our leader because when it will starts, nobody should blame us.

“Asari Dokubo numerated how he sabotaged and planned how our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was abducted and extraordinarily renditioned from Kenya to Nigeria.

“Asari Dokubo should know that he is not an Igbo man, and should stop portraying himself so. Igbos believe in equity and justice and Igbos don’t need a traitor like Asari Dokubo.

“Asari Dokubo should equally remember that IPOB never declared war against him since he started his nonsense statements against IPOB and Nnamdi Kanu. We don’t want to be distracted or join issues with him.

“But we want to make it categorically clear to him that if any IPOB member, both in the hinterland and coastal region of Biafra, dies as a result of his threats, he will understand what IPOB is capable of doing.

“Again, we want him to withdraw his empty threats and stop exposing his historical shortcomings and ignorance by dabbling into a century that he has completely no idea about. Asari Dokubo is not an Igbo and has no link with the Igbo people.

“Igbos don’t need Asari to live their lives. Asari should know that he doesn’t, and can never love Igbo people more than Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB movement.

“Asari Dokubo should know that his sabotage of the Biafran struggle will not stop us from getting Biafran freedom. His grouse with Nnamdi Kanu was because he was more interested in becoming the President of Biafra, and he was told to wait first until Biafra comes.

“He turned against Kanu and Biafra freedom because he hates the truth. Asari thinks that his criminal gangs sponsored by Aso Rock and some politicians in the region will kill IPOB members and blame it on Igbo people. We know who he is and he will soon regret his actions against a just cause.”

Sports / 2022 AFCON: The Gambia Set For Cameroon Test; Tunisia Lock Horns With Burkina Fa by topkom: 1:00pm On Jan 29, 2022
The ongoing Africa Cup of Nations 2022 (AFCON 2022) is getting to the stage where boys are being separated rom the men as hosts, Cameroon set to face debutant, the Gambia in the first quarter-finals.

No one gave the Gambia any chance of progressing to the next round being a debutant. The West African country shocked many by winning their group and moving to the last 8.

The Scorpions challenge will np doubt the Indomitable Lions.

It has been proven that anyone can be beaten in this competition, knowing what happened to favourites like Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria and recently Ivory Coast.

Meanwhile, five-time champions Cameroon is surely the favourite here. To achieve progress to the last four, they have to face an emerging force in continental football, The Gambia.

Getting to this stage means that the Gmabi can’t be taken with levity. They have a lethal striking force of Ablie Jallow and Moussa Barrow who netted twice each to the moment.

Gambia celebrate their passage into the last 8 of 2022 AFCON (Photo: CAF)
This is also a good opportunity for Cameroon to win their 6th AFCON.

Having recorded three wins and a draw till this stage, captain Vincent Abubakar is expected to lead by example again. The striker has scored six goals in four games, to become the first player since 1998 to reach this milestone in the AFCON finals.

Burkina Faso v Tunisia

This is another mouthwatering clash between to top African sides.

Tunisia will be relishing the moment of beating Nigeria had a hundred per cent record in the tournament prior to the last 16 clash to get here.

It is another opportunity for them to pass through a Burkinafaso side that have not been sparkling. The 2004 champions will hope for a second title in their history.

The North African team sure has a game plan and they know how to execute it.

Tunisia and Burkifaso will meet in the last 8 of 2022 AFCON

Burkinafaso, a 2013 finalist will not be a pushover either. They are still dreaming of a first historical trophy, after finishing runner-up for the 2013 edition in South Africa.

They could bank on their head-to-head history, having won three of their last meetings in the tournament.

It is now an opportunity for both teams to put their names in history books.

Politics / Nigeria Will Treat Social Media Platforms Like Twitter – Presidency by topkom: 9:47pm On Jan 26, 2022
The Federal Government has revealed that any law governing the operations of Twitter in Nigeria will apply to other social media networks.

This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in Cairo at a meeting with his counterpart, Egypt Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Dr Amir Talaat.

The meeting was a bilateral discussion with Africa Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) on how Nigeria can access funding to support its growing creative industry.

During his engagement with the Egyptian Minister, Lai Mohammed disclosed that the requisite laws within the National Broadcasting Corporation Act and Code will be amended to ensure compliance by all social networks operating within the country.

“The beauty of the engagement with Twitter is immense. Whatever applies to Twitter will apply to all other social media platforms, be it WhatsApp, Facebook, or any other.
“That is why we will be having a retreat to amend the NBC Act and the NBC Code to incorporate these new gains we made with the engagement with Twitter,’’ he said.

The Minister also stated that Twitter had agreed to operate under the auspices of Nigerian law by payment of taxes and collaboration with agencies to ensure accountability.

“Twitter has agreed to comply to all payable taxes as they are operating under the Nigerian laws and this they agreed to do within one week of restoring their operations.

“Twitter agreed to immediately work with the Federal Government in the area of code of conduct which is in line with global best practices

“Twitter agreed to immediately enroll Nigerians in its Law Enforcement portals and Partners Support Portal.

“The law enforcement portal will provide dedicated channels for the Nigerian laws enforcement agencies to escalate reports on contents that violate the code of conduct or the national laws.

“Similarly, the partner support portal provides a direct channel for government to engage twitter staff to manage prohibited contents,’’ Lai said.

Politics / Transparency Int’l Corruption Rating Indicts All Nigerians, Not Buhari Regime by topkom: 9:28pm On Jan 26, 2022
Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, says the negative corruption rating of the Transparency International which placed Nigeria on the second most corrupt country in Africa is an indictment on the citizens and not on the government.

The Transparency International rating also placed Nigeria on 24 points out of 100 available points, to drop in its ranking.

However, Adesina, in an interview on Channels TV ‘Sunrise Daily’ monitored by NRTC, said that the Transparency International’s report was an “indictment on all Nigerians, and not the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari alone.”

Nonetheless, he stated that the index does not reflect the Federal Government’s stance and fight against corruption in all facets of the public sector.

“My attitude to reports like that remains the same. We don’t need such reports to validate whatever FG is doing and anti-corruption is one of the core pledges of this administration.

“Would you rather believe the reports about arrests by EFCC or a foreign organization? Corruption is being tackled by this administration.

“Such reports are not an indictment of the administration but of the average Nigerian like you and me.

“There is no country that has succeeded in eliminating corruption as obtains in a country that executes such criminals and continues to execute.

“The scourge is a problem anywhere that this administration has continued to tackle. Once you are indicted, the judiciary takes over such cases without interference from the executive.

“This administration has done very well with statistics from Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, Code of Conduct Bureau to back it up,” Adesina noted.

Politics / Presidency Discloses How Civil Servants Pilfered Funds In 500,000 Bank Accounts by topkom: 9:18pm On Jan 26, 2022
The Presidency on Tuesday revealed the discovery of at least 500,000 bank accounts with stolen funds belonging to civil servants across various federal ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

This was contained in a statement issued by the Presidency media aide Garba Shehu in Abuja.

According to Garba, “his (Mr Buhari’s) administration discovered more than 500,000 bank accounts operated by ministries, agencies and departments. In these accounts, the money belonging to the government was kept.”

As a result, the administration had to incorporated the usage of the Treasury Single Account, TSA in order to redress this menace.

“What is more, some of the signatories had left the service or were ‘unknown’, and so no one had access to the funds. MDAs are now compelled to use the Treasury Single Account, TSA, domiciled in the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“Very often, we hear people say that Nigeria’s problem is not plans and policies; but rather that of a lack of implementation.

“The subtext of such comments is simple: the bureaucracy is the key; if it works, everything works; if it fails, plans and policies are hardly worth the paper they are written on; the bureaucracy literarily holds the future of the nation in its hands,” the Presidency stated.

According to the Presidency, the civil servants are not the only ones siphoning public funds. It said past presidents and heads of state also pilfered the public coffer except the incumbent who had saved Nigerians from financial doom.
“President Muhammadu Buhari is a leader. He inherited a treasury that had been emptied by successive previous administrations; and he sought and succeeded in repatriating billions of dollars of stolen funds from overseas,” the statement revealed.

Supporting the claim, the statement pointed to the fact that Mr Buhari “has not failed to pay the salary of those working for the federal government; and declared the failure of states to do so ‘a national disaster’.”

Politics / Next Govt Should Worry About Fuel Subsidy Removal – Sylvia A by topkom: 8:10pm On Jan 25, 2022
The removal of the fuel subsidy will be the worry of the next Nigerian government as the Federal Government says it would approach the National Assembly with a Bill to delay the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act for another 18 months.

What this means is that the incoming administration will have to worry about fuel subsidy removal as the President Muhammadu Buhari-led regime would have elapsed before then.

With this, the Buhari-led administration would be dumping the responsibility of taking a decision on removal of the fuel subsidy to the next government.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, disclosed this at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, and confirmed the temporary suspension on the proposal to eliminate payment of fuel subsidies.

The minister disclosed that the government was planning to send a Bill to the National Assembly for an amendment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) with a proposal to extend its implementation by 18 months, a period by which the present administration would have handed over power to another administration.

“The NNPC limited and any of its subsidiaries shall conduct their affairs on a commercial basis in a profitable and efficient manner without recourse to government funds. The organisation shall retain 20% of its funds to grow its business,” a section of the PIA read.

During the conference, Sylva stated that there was already a provision within the PIA which empowers the Federal Government to effect the total removal of fuel subsidies.

However, this mandate had to be suspended due to the lack of requisite infrastructures necessary to mitigate its effects on the populace.

“There is already a provision in the law but because President Muhammadu Buhari is concerned about the plight of the people, he believes that the impact the removal of subsidy will have on the people should be mitigated by putting the right structures in place — these structures are not in place.

“The modalities to ensure refineries are revamped are in place. The Dangote Refinery will commence at the end of the year; the Port-Harcourt refinery will also be functional at some capacity.

“There is a scheme to ensure the introduction of auto gas for automobiles with the conversion of one million cars by April with corresponding stations. We have discussed with manufacturers who are willing to set up the requisite infrastructure so it is a 50-50 arrangement which has been concluded.

“Thereafter, Nigerian marketers will be able to access the funding in order to ensure a widespread ripple effect. All these will come together before the removal of fuel subsidy.

“All these have to be in place before the removal of subsidies; also the introduction of palliatives by the Finance Minister.

“Therefore, the time is being extended which is not specific but subject to discussions to National Assembly and amendment of the PIA. At this moment, fuel subsidy removal is not on the cards,” the Minister explained.

He also implored Nigerians and stakeholders to desist from panic-buying and hoarding of fuel products which informed the need for an explicit clarification of the mandate and timeline by the FG.

“I noticed some queues building up and this is not natural due to the actions of profiteers who begin to hoard the fuel; all these informed the need for the panic buying which is why the FG had to issue this clarification in order to allay the fears of the populace.

“This reversal is not because of the upcoming elections but due to the need to ensure there are measures in place to mitigate the effects on Nigerians.”

Religion / German Catholic Priests Come Out As Gay by topkom: 7:53pm On Jan 25, 2022
Over 120 Roman Catholic Church priests and employees within a community in Germany have decided to come out as homosexuals, while also launching a campaign demanding an end to institutional discrimination against LGBTQ people.

The priests and church employees took to the streets on Monday after allegedly facing constant discrimination, and also called for better protection of LGBTQ rights and an end to institutional discrimination against queer people.

The protesters, including former and current priests, teachers, church administrators and volunteers, who identified themselves as gay and queer, asked the church to take into account their demands and do away with “outdated statements of church doctrine when it comes to sexuality and gender.”

They also published a seven-point demands on social media under an initiative called “OutInChurch.”

The demands range from queer people saying they should be able to live without fear and have access to all kinds of activities and occupations in the church without discrimination.
They demanded that their “sexual orientation must never be considered a breach of loyalty or reason for dismissal from their occupation.”

They also asked the church to revise its statements on sexuality based on “theological and human-scientific findings.”

Besides asking for equal rights, the group also put down demands that the church takes accountability for their discrimination against people of the community throughout history, calling on the bishop to take responsibility on behalf of the church.

Sports / AFCON 2022: Tunisia Send Nigeria Home From Cameroon by topkom: 11:20am On Jan 24, 2022
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been knocked out of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Captain Youssef Msakni scored with a long range shot to hand a Covid ravaged Tunisian team an unexpected 1-0 win over Nigeria in Garoua, to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Youssef powered home a low shot from outside the penalty area, two minutes into the second half. The only goal bundled Nigeria out of the tournament.

Alex Iwobi saw red, after a reckless tackle within a few minutes of coming on as a substitute.

This is seen as a shocker from a team that finished best loser against a team that finished their group games with a hundred percent record.

Nigeria will be ruing the chances missed as Moses Simon, Wilfred Ndidi and Samuel Chukwueze missed early in the first five minutes.

Youssef scored the only goal that knocked Nigeria out of AFCON 2022 (Image credit: CAF)
The Eagles of Carthage defended well and made sure they dominated more of the possession play.

Nigeria went behind and never come back
In the Group stage, Tunisia started with a 1-0 defeat to Mali, before they humbled Mauritania 4-0. They fell 1-0 to newcomers, Gambia in the AFCON stage in the last group match. This made them qualify as one of the best losers. For the Super Eagles, they stopped Egypt 1-0, saw off Sudan 3-1 and handed Guinea Bissau a 2-0 defeat.

The Eagles of Carthage who have only won the AFCON once in 2004. They will now face Burkina Faso in the quarter-final stage.

Now that the Eagles are out, the next schedule for them is to face the Black Stars of Ghana in the final World Cup qualifiers.

Health / Ways To Overcome Low Self-esteem by topkom: 10:32am On Jan 24, 2022
Everyone has self-esteem. While some persons have a low self-esteem, others have a high self-esteem which they carry with great pride.

Self-esteem has to do with how you feel about yourself. There are people who are easily affected by what others think and say about them. And this could make them develop a low self-esteem.

In this article, we shall take a look at some ways you can overcome a low self-esteem if you are stuck in that murky waters.

Avoid negative conversations

Accept yourself the way you are

We all desire to be better versions of ourselves. However, when we do not get what we always desire, we have to accept our fate that way. We don’t have to always get what we desire but our attitude and outlook to life is very important.

Our attitudes form our self-esteem. If you always feel bad about things that you do not get, you will get a low self-esteem. Hence, you have to accept the situations that way and move on to other things. Focus more on what you can control so that you do not feel bad every time.

Positive words have power over our lives and it is paramount that we harness them effectively. In a bid to avoid negative thoughts, you must fill your life with positive words.

You cannot live your life on empty thoughts. It has to be either positive or negative. Hence, you should fill your life with positive words to boost your self-esteem. Constantly tell yourself that you are beautiful inside out and capable of doing great works. Whenever you fail, pick yourself up and continue your race. Remember, your words are very powerful.

Set realistic goals

Most times, people feel down because they set goals that are unrealistic. It is good to aim high but it is also good to be true to yourself. When you pull your resources together, do you think you can achieve that goal that you set for yourself? Setting goals that are too high for you will make you feel depressed. Hence, set realistic goals for yourself.

Be open to criticism

As humans, we will often get to be criticized one way or the other. If the criticism is not at our workplace, it could be among family gatherings. Or from friends and close circles.

It can also be from comments on social media. So, to avoid having a low self-esteem, you must be open to criticism. Do not allow the words you hear get to you; but you have to learn to take corrections.

Have you ever experienced low self-esteem before? Kindly share with us.

Sports / AFCON 2022: We Lost Due To Bad Officiating – Eguavoen by topkom: 10:18am On Jan 24, 2022
Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has reacted to the team’s exit from the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) holding in Cameroon.

Tunisia bundled Nigeria out of the tournament on Sunday with a 1-0 win in the Round of 16. The Carthage Eagles progressed to the next round through a second-half goal from Youssef Msakn.

Tunisia who were winners of the 2004 edition of the tournament will now face Burkina Faso on Sunday in the quarter-finals.

Eguavoen blames bad officiating
Giving his thoughts on the match during the post-match press conference, Eguavoen, a former Nigerian international said the Super Eagles exited the tournament due to bad officiating.

While noting that his players fought a good fight, Eguavoen said it was always very difficult playing against a tactical side like Tunisia, especially when the officiating was not fair.

“We tried to come back after the Tunisia goal, and we chased the game. But then we got a red card. It was clear that the officiating wasn’t fair.

“I won’t criticise the referee because they are masters of the game, but Alex Iwobi’s red card wasn’t fair. The foul wasn’t an intentional one,” he said.

Speaking further, Eguavoen disclosed that he had told the players to quickly put the loss behind them and face the job at hand in March.

”I have told the players to pick up and ensure they qualify Nigeria for the World Cup,” he said.

Celebrities / Portable: The No-holds-bar Entertainer by topkom: 10:12am On Jan 24, 2022
On Sunday, December 12, an anonymous musician, Portable real name Habeeb Okikiola cracked the airwaves with his smash hit, ‘Zazzuu’ featuring renowned Hip Hop and Afrobeat’s icon, Olamide Baddoo.

Since his mainstream debut in December 2021, Portable aka Dr Zeh has continued to make headlines primarily for negative reasons.
Within the space of four weeks since he became a popular artiste in the country; Portable has been involved in a feud with social media dancer and hype man Poco Lee, show promoter Kogbagidi and recently members of his publicity team.

Portable has no known history, he simply emerged from the dusk. Prior to the release of the smash hit, ‘Zazzu’ in the concluding part of 2021; the Ogun State-born musician has no single recorded, no prior interview sessions or freestyle videos on social media.

He was just a young man with a unique appearance. His hairstyle, choice of earrings, the free-spirited tattoos and non-conformist ideology meant that Nigerians are about to experience something different.

Yes, he is giving Nigerians the show that they subscribed for.

Once in a blue moon, the Nigerian music industry unveils mavericks; in the 2000s we had stars such as Konga and Terry G, in the latter 2010s; Naira Marley broke into the mainstream, in 2021, it was Portable otherwise known as Mr. Zazzu or Dr Zeh.

How did Mr Portable become a star?
In life, there will always be outliers; people who do not possess apparent talent or skill albeit they always find fortune and fame in their field of endeavor. Portable is fortunate to be in the limelight, no talent whatsoever, but he is making headlines.

In the early part of December 2021, Portable was introduced to Afrobeats icon Olamide by social media influencer and dancer Poco Lee. In the video, Portable held on to Olamide’s legs, seeking his blessings.

Few days afterwards, the single ‘Zazzu’ was born. It quickly gained acceptance among Nigerians primarily because of Olamide’s trademark vocals, it became the most played single in December and it is still one of the most popular songs in the country.

Judging from comments from netizens, no one understands Portable’s lyrics on ‘Zazzu’, however, it is still a popular single because of the hypnotic chorus.

With just one single, Portable was allowed to perform at Wizkid’s concert. Also, he entertained fans at the concerts of Davido, Olamide and every other event in the music industry.

Why Portable’s music career will decline before it emanates

Despite Portable’s new found fame, he doesn’t possess the propensity to keep his head in the game and it only a matter of time before he fizzles into obscurity.

Aside from his sometimes unnecessary petulence, Portable does not have the brand management team that will make his career attractive and appealing to mesmerize a broader audience.

Who would you rather listen to?

Marlians’ Zinoleesky or Portable…?

The answer is as apparent as daylight.

Portable needs a management team to aid in refining his image, career texture, and public perception.
Finally, this youngster needs counseling. Perhaps his senior colleagues in the music industry could put him under their wings and lecture him on how to treat himself like a superstar that he has become.

He keeps fighting everybody, it is only a matter of time before everyone leaves him alone to face the harsh realities of life alone when he could be repolished and shown the epicureanism of superstardom.

In the end, we all enjoyed Zazzu Zeh.
